Sure... Tesla voice commands barely work as it is.
[deleted]
Oh joy. Now it’ll be even slower. Can I opt out? Please? Edit for the idiots on the audience; duh, the LLM isn’t hosted on car. However, the API calls will take time. The server needs to run the query. Then I need to get the signal back, and all that can fail. I’ve driven lots of places where the signal is so spotty I can barely load basic map data. I’d like my car to function without having to talk to a server in California or further, thanks.
And yet Gemini is worse than old Google assistant.
Now if only the automatic wipers worked properly.
Only so he can siphon off more money from Tesla.
I just want 1 speed slower for the wiper setting...the lowest is too fast for light rain and auto has a full goddamn complex if a single drop is anywhere on the windsheld
It will come next week in the next week
So… like… sometime in the next 10 years? Maybe?
No thanks. Just leave me alone.
Holy shit I don’t need annoying Alexa talking to me while driving
The conflict of interest is obvious, a tender would be best if Tesla is gonna outsource the tech but it's also possible that Grok might be the best fit for Tesla, if only in terms of management efficiency.
No
How to increase Grok AI revenue ? We can integrate with Tesla so we can start billing them every month.
That's not how this works. Your car is not going to run Grok. Its a simply internet connection to connect to Grok servers.
Can't believe some of these dumb dumb comments. Having AI in your Tesla is going to change the driving game. It'll be able to do so much that a Tesla cannot do right now.
And for reasons not even God fully understands, isn't available for android auto and the voice function. At least Tesla cares about user experience.
I won't hold my breath. I'm still waiting for working windshield wipers. I don't even have high standards, just want wipers that work as-well as my old 2008 Honda.
Like what? It would never be used regularly.
Yes
You speak to the car. The car runs a small neural network to convert your request into text, the text is uploaded to the cloud, there grok runs it, then send the text response back to the car and the car executes the commands. Ie "navigate to the nearest supercharger with a burger joint next to it and find out who won the game last night?" turns into a command for the navigation and it reads the answer to your question...
Google should have integrated any of their LLMs into android auto 2 years ago, but they dropped the ball harder than a NYE party. Thank God for Tesla.
Maybe it will come for free with my roadster?
I asked "navigate to burger king" when I was literally in a burger king's parking lot. Gemini planned me a multi-day roadtrip across the continent.
Exactly. A simple and efficient connection is all it is. People think they need to have the AI compute in their cars haha
Patience! Something something "deep rain" neural network
“Soon” is typically measured in years
Do you listen to podcasts or audiobooks on long drives? Talking to an AI is like that, except it's a 2 way conversation. It's a lot of fun and very helpful. If they do it right, you'll be able to say things like "navigate to the nearest Ramen shop that's still open" or "pull into the next gasstation near some grass" so you can walk your dogs. Or "what's the meaning of life?" Or "what's the latest news" and then have a conversation about the news. Talking to AI is just infinite fun. Talking to AI can also be used for therapy, studies show. Having a stressfull day? Talk about it, it's shown to help. Or maybe you don't know what to eat for dinner? Let it help you pick something out. Again, infinite possibilities.
[removed]
so it's network dependent?
Maybe in the year 2150. FSD will be solved before the wipers.
What could go wrong? 🤷♂️
[deleted]
That sounds like a horror movie. I’ll just stick with talking to humans, thanks.
Technically that works but 1 every 5 seconds is a lot of button pressing and for the smartest car on the planet, this is a 1950s solution.
person yam piquant command start fall groovy observation engine hunt *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev/home)*
Or just talk to your friends lol.
Yeah that’s a pass from me. Tesla needs to be less of a meme and really needs to start focusing on the things that matter.
I drive in canyons with no cell service all the time, and the inability of the car to cache map data is real annoying. Cloud-based voice commands don't work great there either, of course. I realize it's not Tesla's MO, but more offline support would be cool!
I thought the in car voice assistant already requires an internet connection?
I know, right? The amount of time I’m just sitting there with a blank screen as I go driving in the mountains is annoying.
It was bad a few years ago but ever since FSD it’s worked great for me
Hopefully it will replace that awful voice command system
No one watched knight rider. Sad.
Soon™️
Why? What value can it possibly add?
"MY GOD! DRY BLOWING SNOW, DIRECT HIT, *DIRECT HIT*!!!! MAXIMUM WIPEAGE!!!"
Exactly, I'm sure Elon will negotiate a tough deal with himself. He's been talking about siphoning money from Tesla to XAI for a while now.
"Dude, ya *gotta* try this Burger King in Albuquerque though... Kevin can fricken *work* that frier man. Next. Level. Shit."
My friends don't ride with me to work lol
How many people do you have in your car on the way to work?
He doesn't have any.
I'm going to talk to mine like it's KITT. Now just give me William Daniels' voice and I'm set.
Priorities
It’s 11 minutes. I’ll survive.
You think it’ll be ready by 2022?
My car can hardly browse the internet. How the hell is it going to work with Grok? 21 M3
You also don't need to talk to an AI when riding to work. If you feel the need that badly to talk to some AI, that means there's an issue with you and you need help.
Definitely... I've got my RDSTR19 vanity plate already to go! The 2020's are going to be lit!
Voice commands matter
So why does it need a meme chatbot for that? Is this another one of your alt accounts Elon?
You don't "need" to do anything. It's fun though.
This is because we still haven’t figured out how to effectively map LLM outputs to device actions. It’s probably why Apple’s improved Siri with device control is delayed until next year even though it was announced in June last year. They didn’t *really* make the whole computer “smarter” or more capable beyond just giving it better language prediction skills. It doesn’t know anything beyond that and likely doesn’t have access to your device data (location, etc). This is what will take the longest to build imo but when it happens it’ll be great.
Yuck
Damn that's nice. It's 45 for me.
It has the potential to let you spend less time looking at the infotainment system and more time looking at the road
My two pain points are the car passive-aggressively reminding me to clean the windscreen by operating the wipers occasionally when we haven't had rain for three days (can’t discern a water stain or a sap droplet from a water droplet), and not turning on the headlights when the wipers are on. If there’s enough rain to warrant turning the wipers on, put the headlights on too. But yeah, wipers that work as effectively as any other automatic wipers would be nice.
Well the Tesla'a have a neat GPU stack, can that run LLMs locally?
Presumably, if it wasn’t choking on the autopilot already. I’d rather they stuck with the language recognition they’re already using since it’s not super expensive on the hardware (presumably) and it works about 50% of the time, which is better than my experience with LLMs
Can we get 13 already
Maybe an explanation about what GROK is
I feel like the automatic actually just misinterprets gray skies as "foggy window". It's fine with water on the windshield as long as there's some blue in the sky, but any time I'm out in a gray haze (even when there's no actual water falling) auto always goes full ham.
that's a good way to put it
Asking because it doesn't really snow here: can you edit the alarm klaxons that accompany this through the boombox app?
As a novelty. Not something anyone that has human interactions regularly would need to do.
Never had to do that with my Audi or BMW. Their autos just worked.
Yeah it’s so transparent. He’s going to force that company to look successful but using all of Tesla’s capabilities and or money.
At the very least, ai voice recognition is miles ahead of teslas voice recognition. OpenAI’s voice recognition is amazing. Teslas is atrocious
I mean it’s a private company, so he has no real incentive to “make it look successful.” The only incentive would be literally paying himself with Tesla’s revenue.
And he will continue to tell us how there is no competing products or shared interests among the two companies.
He needs to for getting funding when it’s not making any money. And using Tesla’s cars numbers to say Grok is used by x number.
The wipers require a 50 cent part that Tesla (Elon) stubbornly refuses to put in the car.
I don’t see how. I can already do everything I need to do with voice commands.
I love how mine jump to full speed when I'm in reverse. When I back into my garage, they tear themselves apart well after the windshield is dry.
I once asked via voice to play a particular song. I could see on the screen that it understood my words perfectly. It then chose to play some Iranian military tunes, and activated the wipers. And people say these cars don’t have soul!
I wonder if Grok could be used to control the car in a way. Like you could say lower the wiper speed 4% or something. Or match the wiper speed to the bpm of this song I'm listening to.
I see this mentioned all the time, but honestly in my 2022 MY I have no problems with the automatic wipers. Their performance is on-par to my previous VW Golf with a rain sensor. Better actually, over longer periods of rain, the VW’s rain sensor tended to “saturate” the signal; becoming increasingly aggressive despite no change in rain, required constant fiddling with the wiper stalk to change the sensitivity.
[deleted]
The use case I could see is changing maps directions to a specific address while driving. Currently, the voice assistant doesn’t get it right
i wish i could upvote this more
I’m sure the compliant board will yet again sign off on another Musk use of Tesla has his personal piggy bank to shore up other investments. Grow a backbone, board!
I’m beta testing this. It called me the N word
Grok is so good. Can't wait to voice chat with it.
We have a scroll wheel, it should be pretty trivial to have a slider type of speed control from 10s between wipes to 0s
🇮🇷🫡
My wipers love to do one sweep on a clear blue day.
It has slowly gotten better over the years. It's still not as good as the sensor everybody else uses.
[removed]
Do you not know that having the window down while the wipers are on is built in feature to get a shower while you’re driving? Crazy that’s it’s included with every model.
Full endorse.
Why
I fixed mine by properly cleaning my windscreen and applying RainX. The rain beads even with the finest misting and the camera sees it resulting in perfect wiping. The problem is you get diesel and other greasy muck on the screen and this means the rain doesn't form drops the camera can see. While it is easy to blame the camera, my LEAF which has an actual rain sensor is just as fussy and the solution is the same, clean the screen properly.

High beams too. Blinded the shit out of me on a foggy day. It’s set to manual now.
I see, Thx!
Can't wait. I can finally feel like Michael Knight.
yeah, unless it's basic commands like today
Or...spotify.
Concerning
They work pretty flawlessly for me, it only gets tripped up on certain uncommon names
> Talking to AI can also be used for therapy, studies show. Having a stressfull day? Talk about it, it's shown to help. I’m not spilling my life secrets to some fucking AI, lol. That’s what Reddit is for.
Sure that's what I want.. a bot that has more control over the car than I do
I just put the music on my phone and play it via Bluetooth. Old school, I know.
Twitter will be less of a money pit for it but what about Tesla ? Will grok make FSD 13 work on HW3?
Mine defaults back to auto for some reason every single time I get back in my car and it pisses me off because it’ll go off randomly all the time
Generative AI. Just what you need linked to a navigation system... Let's hope it doesn't hallucinate where you're going.
Or he wants AI integration in his cars and by far the cheapest way to do that is to use another company he owns versus buying it from a third party?
That doesn’t change the conflict of interest.
How would that be cheaper? Is xAI going to bill Tesla less than another AI company would? Why would they do that?
It's the opposite of a conflict of interest it's an alignment of interests. It just makes sense, it's the cheapest way to put AI in the cars and it is a great use case for XAI. It's mutually beneficial
They have humor
Mutually beneficial is two companies making the agreement led by separate leaders advocating for their company and shareholders. This is literally the definition of a conflict of interest. The cheapest way would have been for AI to be part of Tesla like all the other non car related things they do.
Yes because Elon owns both companies and the deal benefits both of them. XAI probably isn't revenue focused at this point and needs install base for testing/visibility more than anything and good luck finding another huge corporate partner like Tesla that doesn't already have a big AI partner they're paying a lot to like Microsoft/Google/etc
Conflict of interest is when the aims of two parties are incompatible. That's not the case here, because a deal is obviously good for both companies or you could say it benefits them mutually.
I genuinely don’t want it
Isn't that what he said last April? https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1782312840772096033?t=wp5JS6peYQiO1sz2W52oCg&s=19 True, he added *soon* this time...
That’s like saying Amazon has conflict of interest by using Amazon owned vans instead of UPS to deliver… companies take things “in house” all the time.
No. It’s the same company lmao. That’s my point.
The last wipe specifically when it’s all done needs to be extra slow so it doesn’t splatter or leave a bad streak behind. My old VW did this I don’t understand why Tesla can’t figure that out. I’m guessing the motor they’re using has just 1 setting: on or off, no variable speed
He does in the sense that siphoning revenue to the company will justify a higher valuation for further raises which will then inflate his networth because he owns considerable amount of stock in the company making Grok AI.
Deeply skeptical if it's "anti-woke", trained on Twitter comments, etc. and if it is, i don't want that shit in my car. Any open source LLM could match voice input to a list of available commands to execute, honestly. That's all the solution the problem requires. Grok isn't any kind of breakthrough, it's just another LLM.
They flip to auto when you enable autopilot/FSD. You'll have to flip them back off manually or get a Commander (https://enhauto.com/commander) which can disable it from flipping automatically.
Look up sister companies. Most large companies operate like this. Hundreds of examples. Amazon, Microsoft, Nestle, Kraft Open your eyes, this is how it works for better or worse.
We got AI voice on Tesla before GTA 6
We got AI voice on Tesla before GTA 6
Tesla is a public company. The shareholders own Tesla. I own Tesla. Musk only owns 22%.
They're just verifying functionality. Every. Single. Drive.
So the trillion dollar company saving a measly $1 million a year to give all their customers an objectively worse and more dangerous product is justifiable? Raise the price of the car by 50 cents. Nobody would complain.
I can’t fucking believe people don’t understand how cool this will be You’ll be able to basically talk to your car like a robot, only not just the preset voice commands. It’ll gain interoperability so you can control features you couldn’t before, ask it about specific food dishes at restraints near you. You’re likely be able to give it preferences in the future etc. It’s the beginning of something way bigger than voice commands. It’ll be an extension of you
People have no idea how much they are going to use it It will become a command center for all car features You’ll be able to give CyberCab specific preferences etc in the future too
My voice commands work 50% of the time and Netflix takes an hour to open. I don't think my model y could handle it lol
Maybe in another decade or so it will be as good as the 5 dollar sensors that have worked for decades. Maybe.
You think a deal like this with XAI isn't approved by the board?
They made it worse recently. I used to be able to just say where I wanted to go and it would start navigating. Now it doesn’t understand at all unless I add the phrase “navigate to” in the front.
Why would it be cheaper? Do you think the professional VCs that invest in xAI are fools that will accept to subsidise Joe asking his Model 3 to tell him fart jokes while driving to work?
At some point you start losing sales. Lack of stalks are definitely costing them sales in Europe.
Because XAI probably isn't revenue focused at this point and needs install base for testing/visibility more than anything and good luck finding another huge corporate partner like Tesla that doesn't already have a big AI partner they're paying a lot to like Microsoft/Google/etc. This is a huge break for them.
My 2003 BMW 3 series worked perfectly, yet a new freakin Tesla can’t, wtf
Grok isn't a meme chatbot. It's about as good as chatgpt 4, and the next version is being built right now
And somehow TSLA will still go up 10%.
Every morning I turn out on to a street to the gym and the sun sets it off. It’s consistent.
Man.. I get this shit with Google Assistant and Spotify all the time. If I ask it to play a song whilst I am driving, instead of playing the top hit for the exact search terms I use if I type them, instead it picks some obscure variant or remix of that song instead. Almost every time. The only thing that works semi-reliably is specifying an album to listen to. If you specify a single song though, forget it. You are getting something tangentially related to the song you actually want to listen to.
President Musk is chock full of ideas
Impossible.
I am invested in Tesla, believe in a lot of what they are doing. I do however not believe a lot of people want to talk with their car nor do I believe that the screens will be used that much (forget about the Apple like app-shopp etc). People have their phones to talk to, should they want it.
Meanwhile at Tesla the engineers say, “Thanks for letting us know Elon!” As the all scurry to make Grok work in a car.
this would replace the voice command. If you have a 2021+ Model Y, you should have a Ryzen processor. The problem atm is software not hardware
Yeah no thanks
Conflicts of interest are the least of the US’s issues at the moment.
Ffs...
If at least the bloody voice control would give you an audible reply so you don't have to look at the screen to confirm it's understood what you asked it to do...
If he could stop announcing stuff, that would be great. Stop getting my hopes up. Also, I feel I would rather a much smaller action model that runs locally in the car. Wouldn't the HW3 computer be capable of this, even alongside other things. Use the 2nd chip that's already in a redundant mode anyway
I thought this thread was about Grok. Boy was I wrong...
Next year
Another reason to never own a Tesla. Mach E is the way
Your connectivity board may be going bad. I had similar problems and it finally quit working altogether. New board, works well now.
But only under streetlights!!
I did that with my Model S for the better part of eight years. It gets old.
Or be skipped entirely in places where salt is applied to roads. That last swipe just smears salt spray and is super annoying.
Dec 2021. Pretty sure I have the old Intel Atom CPU. I think they started shipping Ryzen early 2022.
Any way to verify? Guessing it would be covered under warranty?
Skynet is almost online. Brace for the War of The Machines folks.
The worst for me is just driving down the highway, in a cold snow. It sees lots of snow in the headlights, and assumes it needs to go to work. Meanwhile the snow isn't even touching the window, and the wipers are doing that awful *rkrkrkrkrkrkekekekerrrkrkrkrr* skipping sound as they drag themselves completely unlubricated across the glass.
Holy shit, seriously. Let's get the basics working before we inject an AI personality into the car.
Ever heard of ChatGPT? It's Twitter/X's version. I've tried them all (Gemini, CoPilot, among others), and it's pretty good. I think it trades blows with ChatGPT depending on what you're looking for.
Unless Tesla can show that it evaluated other AI APIs (ChatGPT, Gemini, Llama, etc) and tried to negotiate deals with them, and that Grok was just the best technology at the best price, then this is a massive SEC violation. Just absolutely naked self-dealing. Of course, the DOJ and SEC isn't going to do anything now, and the Tesla board is part of the problem, so... I'll be opting out of whatever this is.
You can go to the service mode, and test the modem and antennas and such. If you're under warranty, yeah it should be covered under warranty. My car is out of warranty. Mine failed the tests for the LTE connectivity immediately typically, but occasionally would come up briefly and work. My service center is lazy, as they did some half-assed troubling shooting, and decided nothing was wrong other than needing a reboot and "firmware" update. I didn't make it a 1/4 mile down the road before it failing again. Ultimately they replaced the connectivity board for $112 in parts and $400 in labor.
It already needs its own app for phones
> This is because we still haven’t figured out how to effectively map LLM outputs to device actions. You don't need to. Being able to ask chatgpt questions while driving is amazing all by itself. If they can integrate it fully with the phone/car, that's cool too.
[removed]
Yeah it's not as fine tuned as chatgpt 4, but it's 95% as good. And their next version should be even better, potentially one of the best in the world.
Their goal is to maximize the truth, regardless of what that is. Also being anti-woke just means not hating white men. Are you saying you hate white men?
Ugh. WHY
I've heard of them, but they're very useless right now. Over time they should develop into something that might be useful.
They have been working perfectly for me for s couple of months now. I can't be the only one?
it's a geological "soon"
Following a bus I saw the autopilot/FSD display had detected the advertisement on the back of the bus as three people running behind the bus.
I noticed ChatGPT is quite a bit better for Unity game development, but I use Grok for most other questions about general knowledge. I like that it directs you to tweets and web results where you can learn more.
Auto high beams are weak sauce too
My god what a bunch of lame, pessimistic reactions. Remind me in 6 months when this is a massive improvement and no one would go back to pre-Grok days.
Now to make the automatic matrix high beams to turn on when it is dusk as well… Or to make the "block out" function available when I choose to turn on the high beams, not only when in automatic.
Got 13 a few days ago. It’s amaaaaazing.

Push button on end of left stalk. Then use scroll wheel on steering wheel to select the speed.
If you push the end button on left stalk once it results in a single wipe and brings up the wiper menu on the screen. You can then use the scroll wheel on the steering wheel to select speed. It doesn't have a 10 sec setting but it has the 4 speeds you can toggle between with the scroll wheel.
Yes I'm aware of that, but I wish we had a continuous selection instead of the 4 speeds preset. Even low is sometimes too high.
What if I don’t want it?

Regardless nothing will be slower. It's just a gimmick that will work when it works and you can ignore when it just like speeking to the car currently. Round trip <0.4s when you have network, feature unavailable when you don't.
