Home Garage Parking

Not sure if this has been discussed recently, but put down gaffers tape in my garage and self parking worked like a dream!

Sometimes the simplest solutions are the most useful!

THATS_LEGIT_BRO 2024-12-31 21:05

Do you back into the driveway first, and then auto park?

mikeace1 2024-12-31 21:21

I just picked up some tape today. Any tips or tricks on making it work real good? Dimensions?

shibiwan 2024-12-31 21:27

I did the same for my MS. Used blue painter's tape because I have a light colored epoxy floor in the garage. Works beautifully even in for a tight fit (my truck is on the other side)

shibiwan 2024-12-31 21:28

Just need the lines wide enough (4"-6") in a contrasting color for the cameras to pick it up. Oh, and obviously the box needs to be larger than the vehicle.

Dodgers90277 2024-12-31 21:29

I put down yellow tape and it didn’t help at all.

[deleted] 2024-12-31 21:55

Are people so bad at reversing that auto park actually helps or simply like the novelty? Bc it’s way slower than a competent human at same task

ChasingPens 2024-12-31 22:04

First, I just wondered if the car would do it, that’s why I used a tape I could pull up if it didn’t. Two, my garage is tight with two cars and my wife frequently pulls over too far, so it’s a pain to back in. And three, yes, I like the novelty of it

DifferentSpecific 2024-12-31 22:32

Put the car where you want it, then lay the tape down.

uncleb00gie 2024-12-31 22:36

It would be great if Tesla had markers that you could print out and place on your garage walls. You could then set your parking spot and the car should be able to park using the cameras.

Tdj04 2024-12-31 22:50

I’m that bad at parking. I use it 99% of the time.

ChasingPens 2024-12-31 23:02

Someone’s going to do it! My way works, but not perfectly. Some times I have to move the car a bit for it to pick up the spot. There has to be a product in this!

jjmckissick 2024-12-31 23:08

Great idea. I really wish they would develop a way to record entry into my garage from the driveway. Something like a macro where I could engage the macro and have the car proceed. Self parking wouldn't work in my case as my garage is attached to the house at an angle and self park always wants to back in over my lawn.

Samuelmarkd 2024-12-31 23:30

I did this but my garage site at the top of a slight incline as you go up the driveway. I think this is why it seldom works.

mirthfun 2024-12-31 23:49

Nice! I've tried this on the past and it's not worked. Maybe new software improves it!

[deleted] 2024-12-31 23:54

I didn’t mean that derogatorily at all, was just curious use case. I’d do this for the novelty myself but I only get FSD through periodic trials lol

arithmetike 2025-01-01 02:12

BMW has this. You have to record the route you want the car to take and the car can park automatically. It can take in small changes into account.

LoogyHead 2025-01-01 03:05

I just like watching it auto park for me.

ChasingPens 2025-01-01 03:10

No worries! I like to back the car in for my charger and I’m constantly worried that I’ll clip the passenger mirror trying to get around my wife’s car. So I just thought, can the car solve the problem for me? It doesn’t work perfectly every time and my wife thinks it looks silly, but the car makes fart sounds, so we’re entitled to some fun 🤣

ChasingPens 2025-01-01 03:15

There are times when I have to move the car a bit to get it to give me the blue parking indicator. I’m going to try other things to improve it. Someone said blue reflector tape works well. Surely someone will come up with a product!

piense 2025-01-01 03:18

Did you put one on the back for where it should stop?

ChasingPens 2025-01-01 03:23

Yes, but I’m not sure it would stop because of the wall. I tried to make it look as much like a parking space as I could.

piense 2025-01-01 03:27

Ah, ours doesn’t backup right to a wall, there’s essentially a 3’ section 6” off the garage floor that it needs to stop at.

ScoobyDooo82 2025-01-01 03:29

I’ve found that if you use the white tape, but give it a black border (against a standard concrete poured garage floor) it works a lot better.

ChasingPens 2025-01-01 03:30

It stops within the 3 sided box I taped on the floor, so I’m guessing it sees the tape at the back.

Photonic__Cannon 2025-01-01 03:57

Ha, knew I couldn't be the only one that painted my driveway! 😅

darbronnoco 2025-01-01 04:33

I use it to park in the driveway and make the kids unload so they don’t ding the doors and then I just have the car park itself.

pslydel 2025-01-01 05:45

This is the way

RichonAR 2025-01-01 06:20

Brilliant. Better is tesla let us train our street, driveway, gate, garage.

InertiaImpact 2025-01-01 06:49

That's not a bad idea, I'm sure they wouldn't like the idea or look of fiducials though from the user perspective. If you are requiring external materials to make the car function, that doesn't fit with their branding of nothing but Vision needed. ( since humans don't need fiducials to locate themselves why should Tesla vision is their ethos)

IntelligentCompany83 2025-01-01 07:35

I do the same thing with my driveway 😂

[deleted] 2025-01-01 08:26

Mine actually automatically pulled into the garage using the cameras with no instruction to do so at all the other day. I was just autopiloting home and had just gotten a major update (the HW4 holiday update) and decided to watch what it did instead of taking over when I was getting close. I figured it would stop in front of my driveway like normal, but *no.* The MyQ triggered like normal, and it turned on the turn signal, turned into my driveway, seemingly waited for the door to finish opening, and started pulling inside.  I cancelled it about there because there's a bunch of random stuff in there, and I couldn't really see if it was going to hit anything because it was going forward, but it seemed to pretty much have it down. If it would *back* in instead, it'd be solid.

AA72ON 2025-01-01 09:27

I wish you could be outside of the car and use this. The latest updates have removed the double press park button action from the USS vehicles. I have a single car garage with a horribly placed water heater that makes it literally impossible to park in the garage without exiting the vehicle via one of the windows.. I really loved that feature. Now I have to angle the car perfectly and then stand there holding the dumb-summon reverse button until the car is in the garage. Used to just open my garage, double press park, select reverse, and walk inside.

ZacForTheWin 2025-01-01 09:51

In my opinion, this just sad.

branedead 2025-01-01 10:28

Sounds more like FSD than autopilot

yahbluez 2025-01-01 12:12

On public parking places, that's what tesla did it sees the marks and use them. So why not using the same marks in your garage?

Wynnstan 2025-01-01 14:19

I've put a piece of tape down the middle of my garage for two parking two Teslas.

DjAnu 2025-01-01 14:30

Same here. I am going to try this out. Thanks

digitalluck 2025-01-01 14:55

Not sure why there are people making fun of this. Putting down tape like that could help with auto park, but if people have a tight garage or park two cars in there those lines could make things a little easier.

ChasingPens 2025-01-01 15:11

Thanks, it doesn’t matter to me. It was an effort to see if it would work first off, but also, I do spend mental energy worrying about hitting something, so why not try it? 50% of the reason I bought the car was because it has interesting things to try and it’s always changing. FSD is definitely a luxury, not a necessity, but if I have it, I’m going to use it!

[deleted] 2025-01-01 17:11

It was. "Driving on FSD" sounds weird, though.

capt32 2025-01-01 17:43

Did something similar in my garage last year https://preview.redd.it/0op6694z5fae1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f2d82f2b2c9afd882be04321721903ca0a68062a

ForGreatDoge 2025-01-01 18:56

Same frustration here. An actually advertised feature that was removed with an update for older cars, completely unnecessarily, and without any replacement. I question the legality of that. Apple has lost lawsuits for less...

comicidiot 2025-01-01 18:57

Arguably, it’s different. Parking lots have space lines to help with order and efficiency. Ever seen the little chaos in a parking lot during/after a snowstorm? No one can park correctly. A household garage or driveway doesn’t have that and it may not be practical for all Tesla drivers to add these changes. Tesla likely wants the car to recognize and adapt to the environment than have the environment adapt to the car.

branedead 2025-01-01 19:03

🤷‍♂️ I didn't come up with this dumb naming scheme

[deleted] 2025-01-01 19:07

I wonder if the falcon wing doors on the X would work in your garage… especially if they were on the front 😆

SeanBannister 2025-01-01 19:17

I'd be scared it'd park on the wall 😂

hutchclutchmedora 2025-01-01 19:28

I’ve been trying this as well with limited success. It sometimes sees the spot, sometimes not. The lines sort of show up in the view, but not completely. I’m going to try different tapes and widths. Op, did you measure space from the inside of the tape or outside. What are the dimensions?

ChasingPens 2025-01-01 19:50

There are times when I have to move the car around a bit to get it to pick it up. Haven’t discovered the secret yet. My spot is 7.5 feet inside to inside of the tape

yahbluez 2025-01-02 06:21

Yah, i'm with you the car should just see the walls, but if it needs a little bit of color on the floor why not.

Tesla_RoxboroNC 2025-01-02 15:45

Damn 😅

ChasingPens 2025-01-03 02:28

The first time yes, but here’s a picture of me pulling in https://preview.redd.it/vhu7clhowoae1.jpeg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8048772d1dd98c19738635f6f4e9c553deeb9756

ChasingPens 2025-01-03 02:33

I used white gaffer tape. Here’s what it looks like if I pull in straight. There was another car in our driveway, so I didn’t back in this time (probably would have taken a 20 point turn to get around the truck!) https://preview.redd.it/kze89uhixoae1.jpeg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=25f728c6cce26af9636a51e7d713671d0e044784

What is the best garage opener setup to get for Tesla? Their homelink for $300 or MyQ? Not sure which works better, but I use chamberlain.

Maximum-Pudding4109 2025-01-03 17:30

Having limited garage space, we store stuff under the cars. Under the Tesla we have a stack of flat cardboard and plywood sheets that would be difficult to store elsewhere. The old Summon code in our 2018 S had no problem parking itself over that pile. Perfect position, every time. The new Summon (2023 Y) has yet to succeed in parking in the same space. I think it sees the pile as a curb. I guess I'll try the stripes.

kabloooie 2025-01-04 00:04

I did this too but the car has to pull all the way in for the door to close and the automation would always stop too far back. It was easier for me to park it myself rather than have to correct the automation every time.

PLGnPLY21 2025-01-04 13:17

Hmmm. Glad you were able to get it to work. I tried a few months ago and didn't work. I kept the tape down as a guide anyway so I guess I'll try again. Maybe recent update fixed my issue. Thanks for posting.

Houston_TX_ 2025-01-04 18:18

Go to YouTube and look up “Tesla’s Homelink vs myQ Garage (Setup and Review)” by Everyday Chris, or follow this link: https://youtu.be/OU2FVAw-BJ0?si=Pc1C8vc62tLF8qlj Definitely MyQ and this video justified it for me and is the reason why I chose MyQ. Enjoy the video. He did a Great job comparing the two.

[deleted] 2025-01-04 19:09

I’ll save and check it out. Hopefully MyQ works with Chamberlain.

AliCoder061 2025-01-04 19:25

Gotta milk the FSD self parking somehow!
