For that you can just use your phone via Bluetooth. If you have unlimited data on your phone.

Yeah but you could do most premium connectivity features by tethering, so I figured the question was what does premium connectivity offer if you don't want to use your phone connection.

I don't know. For a 2022 model Y there is nothing interesting. I don't have an apple watch so it's all minor tweaks and UI changes. The energy on arrival could be helpful a few time every year, but the update doesn't address any major UX issues.

The fact that you can only have like 5 things on the bottom of the screen. Like why? There's so much space left.

Premium should allow you to update on data plan. The value of premium is lower and lower

Not sure about this anymore. A few weeks ago, I was going home with my work car which didn't have premium, eta 20min with the navigation route. I knew there would be a lot of people on this route at this hour, so I did a manual detour and eta went down to 12min.

Just took a cross country road trip. Using the Tesla planner, it would have me arrive at certain charging stations at 2% of my battery. This is thin margins to say the least. With this update I can now tell it to not go below 20% before stopping if possible so there’s much more margin and is also better for your battery health overall

For instance, I like going to national parks which are far away from chargers. I like to arrive with a certain % so that I know I’ll have enough to make it back

It does not deserve the hype it gets. Minor tweaks is far and wide beyond what the other manufacturers can provide, and I'm grateful. But you too took offence by my opinion. Several months in advance people are writing wish lists and dreaming up all kinds of cool features, me included. This update does not affect my day to day commute, and that is most important to me.

yeah seriously. this update alone has more interesting features than Ford or Mercedes would ship in two years.

Built in spotify app is a superior experience than using spotify over bluetooth. Next song button over bluetooth has a ~2 second delay to switch songs that drives me nuts. It swaps instantly in the spotify app. Bonus, spotify app doesn't load ads for podcasts. That and the super chargers near me have slow wifi compared to streaming video through premium connectivity.

Still no Android UWB and we get another Apple only feature, ffs Tesla.

No quick toggle for use HOV lanes still. 😞

Passenger seat can be adjusted today. They are just adding more features to adjustment and giving ability to do second row of X. The limitation is today you need rear screen. I don't know if they removed that limitation

Can’t you use the built in app by using your phone as a hotspot?

Or just give wifi to the car.

The default setting for the time-save to reroute is 10 minutes.

Ah yet again premium connectivity updates which legacy S/X, even with MCU2, won't get despite paying the same.

Bit odd though as this is the most likely one to actually cost them something too… Google started charging some pretty hefty sums for the Maps API a while back, it almost killed GeoGuessr

that’s why I don’t set myself up for disappointment. I wasn’t even expecting a big winter update with a lot of features since 2024.44 added quite a bit of new features already. Wish lists are nice but unless they are based on leaks, they are nothing more than just that - a *wish* list.

Absolutely! This past holiday weekend - has me getting to family’s house with less than 10% battery, even though there is no charging there and no superchargers immediately nearby. Will be nice to tell it I still want to be at 50% on arrival.

Well, you can add seat warmers on top of that... But I get your point, if you don't want seat settings then there's some dead space.

I imagine the weather radar and sentry camera enhancements will need premium connectivity. Sentry camera stuff at minimum.

I do hotspot so that I can use the built in Spotify app. The car's a little slow to connect sometimes though, and I should somehow automate turning hotspot on/off based on proximity to car.

If you want to start and connect your hotspot every time you get into the car. My primary reason for subscribing to premium connectivity is to give me native access to streaming apps. It's fantastic having Apple Music, Spotify, TuneIn, Podcasts, etc. as integrated as FM radio.

I know it’s not completely seamless but you can use shortcuts or automation to do this automatically with just a little bit of leg work to set up.

All “traffic” does is show it visually on your map. Without premiums you still got live traffic routing/re-routing, you just couldn’t seed the yellow/red lines on the map is all.

article doesnt say which cars are excluded. as tesla upgrades hardware i’ve slowly not been able to have features in the past year or two.

Decent update I guess, it then continued lack of some basic navigation features is baffling. - HOV/tolls quick toggle - set preferred route to frequent destinations - navigate and avoid highways.

Or you can just pay $99 for a whole year and not worry about it lol. This is not directed at you… but I find it funny when some Tesla owners pay $50k+ for a car $8k+ for FSD $200+ for mats, etc…. But then scoff at $99/year

Yep I realize. I have tons of automations set up already but my experience is, especially location based automations, are not anywhere near 100% reliable.

Actually for the past month I've been using my hotspot on my Samsung phone and it's been 100% reliable in turning on hotspot (built-in Routines app). I actually trigger it when Bluetooth connects specifically to my car to turn on hotspot (which is reliable because the phone key thing). The larger issue is the car WiFi turns itself off about 50% of the time (edit: only at the start of the drive, not randomly). I wish Tesla had an option to keep WiFi on while driving always. I have "remain connected in Drive" turned on. I cancelled after they got rid of included music. I already have unlimited hotspot through TMobile. I did have to turn off all data analytics so my car doesn't upload data.

Is there a way?

You can, and I've been doing that for the past month. Hotspot part works fine. Only real complaint is WiFi has a 50/50 shot of staying on when I start driving. Sometimes I have to open the Tesla menu and turn it back on, as it turns itself off, even with remain connected in drive enabled. Tesla seems to intentionally make it difficult to do this by always turning WiFi off. I cancelled after they got rid of included music. I already have unlimited hotspot through TMobile. I did have to turn off all data analytics so my car doesn't upload data. My wishlist would be: 1. Add a metered wifi connection option, if Tesla wants my data. 2. Add a toggle to never turn WiFi off.

And hopefully this feature will trickle down to us Samsung users sooner rather than later.

I assume/hope the SiriusXM is streaming and our cars haven’t had the hardware in it all this time? My dad has SXM in his car and I can use his credentials for streaming. Hope this is coming to older 3s as well (mine’s a 2019)

Yep. $99 a year is a good deal to buy it and forget about it.doubt Tesla is making any money on that by the time they pay AT&T for the data.

Not natively, at least for consumer software versions There are third party ‘black boxes’ which can be wired in to intercept the video signal going to the screen for screen recordings/screenshots

It doesn’t say in the release notes, but the new weather overlay may require Premium.

What’s coming out specifically for intel?

After our thanksgiving travel quite a few of these are sorely needed. The destination charge level, visible traffic, search along route, and especially supercharger stall status would have been a big help to me. Now, we need some improvements to the AP, maybe parity with FSD in a straight line. That's my last real "complaint"

“Quick” is the operative word here. Not having to go into the car settings every time you want to adjust something that’s often a per-trip choice.

What's the use-case/purpose of switching it on/off so much that it would warrant a first-tier toggle?

Surely a decent update, especially for free, but... How can they continue to not make the Messaging app not totally suck? That seems like such low-hanging fruit to improve.

Pretty sure it’s just an app that will connect to streaming server, just like Spotify. So it should work on all vehicles.

It also changes depending on where you're at during your journey. I won't use an express lane if I'm passing through a city but I'm not taking a 4 hour detour to avoid a toll bridge. I agree, it should be a quick toggle.

Might be different on certain models, but on my 23’ model 3, can’t agree with that. The Spotify app takes longer to load if signal is poor and the quality/bitrate of the music is much much lower than the quality from Bluetooth. Just searched and the bitrate using the Spotify app is 157 kbps on average and Bluetooth can get up to 256. Pretty significant difference for my ears.

still waiting for non spoken audible cues when turns are approaching. or a visual glow on the screen (like when you haven't touched the steering wheel in awhile).

It goes on to say they will offer $9.99/month 'all access' sub for 2 years, and clicking the details says service will automatically renew at then-current rates (currently $24.98/month), which is their current prices for the car+app service. so from all that it sure seems like it won't just be logging in with app credentials like spotify, apple music etc. and that they are assigning bogus 'radio ids' to each tesla even though it doesn't actually have a satellite radio in it.

There shouldn’t even be a toggle. The camera can see how many people are in the car.

Decent list but still bummed out we have no 5.1 or Atmos after that (likely fake) rumor circulated 2 years ago. It can't be that hard to at least do 4.0. I use a 4.0 setup for a lot of my Atmos listening and it's fantastic. There are diminishing returns with center and hight speakers at least with music. If FSD hadn't gotten soo good this year I'd be looking at Lucid/Mercedes/Cadillac who all support it. I know I'm probably an extreme minority, but it would be a nice feature.

I wonder if other vehicles will get the ability to put a custom wrap or license plate on the avatar. The notes mention Cybertruck only, for now.

Genuine question-- how do you know X% is enough to get to the next Supercharger afterwards, without using the trip planner to set the nearest Supercharger as a further destination anyway (which was the workaround before this feature) (I'll grant, in your example, 50% is plenty enough for nearly any scenario, but my question still stands). I wish, in addition to this feature, they'd also calculate for you a recommended minimum percentage to get to the nearest supercharger afterwards. Like "Please set your desired arrival charge % -- and by the way, to get to the nearest supercharger, we recommend you'll need at least \~15%"

I'm glad you like it! Many people will and should enjoy it. But all of us who don't have an apple watch, live in the EU and don't have a 2024 M3 might be underwhelmed. Call it disappointed.

And on the other side of that, I hate how much cushion the car gives when navigating to and picking SCs. I don’t need to stop when I’m around 20%, I can handle going down to <5% if the conditions are constant. This can save me from having to manually make my own route based on ABRP.

If you have iPhone use shortcuts to trigger the connection when you connect to cars Bluetooth. That’s what I do, the iPhone turns on hotspot when getting in the car

Just because you see value in one item, doesn’t mean you see value in a completely unrelated item. Can’t speak for everyone, but I don’t blindly purchase things I don’t see value in.

Tethering is the easy way out if you have a good hotspot/unlimited data plan. When it comes to streaming audio as long as it's more than 256kps you can get by without premium connectivity. My T-Mobile phone has unlimited hotspot at 256kbps. If I want to stream Hulu I'll use my Verizon Hotspot instead. Now for people who have a crappy data plan then yes Premium Connectivity actually has its use case.

Oh yeah. The recent rate change now unbundled all the music, sports, talk. You choose what you want or be forced to get all of them. The older plans still exist in a backlink. Now that my initial disappointment has subsided I am excited for some of the features. Passenger seat control, nice!. I regularly pack the car full of stuff and need extra room behind the passenger seat.  And that reverse alert, nice!  Percentage at arrival? Nice finally! Traffic on route. Nice. But what the f*** are you on about, radar image of precipitation. Like I am gonna say nah I'm gonna skip work today it's raining. 💩

Since SiriusXM treats this like a car subscription, I'm hoping this also includes access to the mobile app too like many other vehicles so you can listen outside the car. So far, it looks like Sirius won't let you add your Tesla Model 3, Y, or CyberTruck to an existing SiriusXM account if you're already paying for the service in your other non-Tesla vehicles. I was hoping to qualify for a bundle discount since that is possible.

Because it’s a subscription and other car manufacturers don’t screw you like this except for the other shitty ones

You can remote start without premium.

I just put the Supercharger in as another stop after my destination and look at the % it would take to get there. Sometimes I camp in my car with camp mode, though, so I really like the idea of having a battery reserve on arrival even if there's no intention of hitting a Supercharger afterwards.

Good to know. So you're just paying for Sentry and the more detailed Google Maps view for the $100. Next year, i'm just going to set a routine in iOS to connect automatically the hotspot when the bluetooth connects.

50k for a car is just the price of mid level cars nowadays. This is not a luxury vehicle at all. 8k for fsd is is just a meaningless point since most people don’t do that. People are only ‘scoffing’ (discussing the merits is not scoffing btw) at an additional subscription in their lives that they would rather avoid if they can. We have data on our phones, and some people would like to not pay for it twice. Also m3 is not anywhere near 50k. Model y is not 50k after rebates. Also : scoffing /ˈskôfiNG,ˈskäfiNG/ adjective contemptuously ridiculing or mocking someone or something. Such defensive and dramatic language.

Lucid is NOT known for their sound system prowess. The EV engineering is very good, and the luxury appointments are quite nice. But the sound system is not great for its class.

The updates should provide what was promised and what everyone bought the car and FSD for. While it’s nice to have, did anyone buy a Tesla to stream music? And who pays for fart sounds, light shows, games, and Santa? Don’t know who’s grand idea were these fractured updates but it’s gotten old and the games aren’t cute anymore. Other car companies are catching up and beating us to the tech punch (BYD for instance) and we are getting excited over streaming apps. Lol! (Rant over)

When will we get this 24’ Holiday update?

This is interesting, do you mind sharing your source on the bitrate? I'm seeing conflicting things online. I haven't noticed any quality degradation - i'm no audiophile but I love the way my 24 m3 sounds (pre-refresh).

Surreal Sound Pro on the Air sounds pretty fantastic. It was pretty bass shy till the most recent update, but in terms of imaging out in front of you and overall clarity and evenness, it’s very nice for an OEM system. The most recent update improved the system across the board. I still prefer my MXP’s system, but they’re both great.  When I tested between Surreal Sound non-pro and Pro (in cars that weren’t just software locked non-pro but physically didn’t have the same hardware), the difference was pretty stark. Would not look at a Lucid without SSP.

Pretty sure ya'alls update turned off your brake and tail lights. Drove past 7 Teslas this morning, of various types, and none of them had working brake or tail lights. Enjoy all the accidents you all are about to cause...

I'm not aware of any automakers that offer remote connectivity features for the lifetime of the car without charging some kind of subscription fee. Mobile connectivity isn't free, and AT&T isn't just going to give bandwidth to Tesla out of the goodness of their heart.

And if I'm not going back to the place I came from?

You can set your end point to where you are going and add stops the system will automatically put supercharges and let you know if the trip is not possible.

This is just another step added to workaround a missing feature

What feature are you looking for, either round trip or add stops will give you an accurate arrival SOC for whatever you are doing. Not sure how else it can be implemented enlighten me please.

Does the weather overlay require newer cars? I have a 2021 MY with Intel Atom, and I did not get the weather overlay. Pretty bummed about that!
