New hand/forearm with double the number of degrees of freedom now in action on the bot! There’s 22 DoFs on the hand, and 3 on the wrist/forearm.

I don't know how they can teleoperate this with a latency low enough to catch the ball and how many attempts were made.

Apple achieved excellent visual passthrough latency with the Vision Pro, with a pretty high resolution feed. Tesla has a pretty incredible hardware / software team already so I don't find it that surprising they were able to achieve the latency necessary for it. Very impressive if this is also wireless, though I guess there could be wires behind the bot here too. The hand dexterity looks unreal.

Grandpas_Spells 2024-11-28 19:58

Other headsets with pass through enable this now. The non-catching movements looked robotic to me. Is this teleoperation?

[deleted] 2024-11-28 20:38

Yes, from what they said, it's teleoperation.

[deleted] 2024-11-28 22:30

Teleportation is a mix of human control and automation. Teleportated robots need to maintain their own balance while getting control instructions.

But Elon misspelled the name of R2-D2 in a post about this. So Reddit can safely ignore the progress for another month. Will be funny when it hits the starlink phase where these are a top selling item and Reddit is in shock that Elon conned us again somehow with cheaper better technology. I remember a month ago people saying that is cool but it’s not going to be put on the actualrobot anytime soon. Too much stuff hidden below. Now it’s on the robot (teleportated but still it is attached and working. ). 30 upvote on the Robotics sub regarding the video of the hand prototype. Lots more comments like that. >Yep this is another Musk con. >Look how its hidden behind that table. We dont get to see how large the mechanics supporting it is. Im guessing its a prototype powered by pressured air and the big ugly parts needed to make that work are hidden. Or other things that make it impractical to have stuffed into a robot arm. This isnlt robotics, ILM-style puppetry. https://www.reddit.com/r/robotics/s/yzR4N7Sz2q

if Optimus is ambidextrous that could be so useful and amazing-techs gonna drag or lead us-better to embrace it.

Nice hand job.

What is the starlink phase?

[deleted] 2024-11-29 02:41

I mean how recently it exploded into mass adoption and people who doubted it are suddenly quite.

ken830 2024-11-29 04:03

Many Redditors are blinded by hate. I don't like Elon's recent political leanings. I think he's gone a bit too far, but I'm not blind. He and his companies are doing incredible things. Execution is near perfect. People will be surprised.

[deleted] 2024-11-29 04:06

Ahh, I was curious if you meant that Optimus would be hooked up to starlink. I’ve doubted Tesla somewhat because I’m a fan of Figure Robotics, so my long term view is that Figure wins but I still think Optimus is impressive.

SchalaZeal01 2024-11-29 04:46

Now teleportation would be something. Beam me up to Mars, Scotty.

theBandicoot96 2024-11-29 05:00

I can't imagine why a robot wouldn't be ambidextrous. I mean, maybe there could be a small amount favoring of the right hand due to training bias, but even ambidextrous people do some things better with one hand. And that could be adjusted for.

littleleeroy 2024-11-29 10:22

That was impressive. Everytime it caught the ball I said "woah". I almost consider it more impressive that it was teleoperated and still catching the ball. Very impressive movements.

UsernameSuggestion9 2024-11-29 14:21

Do you not get Trevor Milton vibes from the CEO?

[deleted] 2024-11-29 14:54

No, I don’t. People said the same thing about Sam Altman but he has been delivering. I’d say Sam and Brett are similar people.

Which is ironic as he has always been left wing, he believes in a future with Universal Basic Income, but as they moved further left and radical (you are either 100% with us or you are against us) the more "right" he seems.

superbiondo 2024-11-30 13:02

The low-latency capability here is simply incredible.

Original_Leader_4293 2024-11-30 14:38

Drknowitall said on YouTube that the red LED around the face screen signifies that Optimus was running autonomously. Blue LED’s that we saw at the WeRobot event were teleoperated

[deleted] 2024-11-30 15:07

Lol, are they sure they want to use red for Autonomous??? https://youtu.be/_wu7mlHyQik?si=IvaLxrD412uhALe0

Tesla team member said it was teleoperated. https://x.com/julianibarz/status/1862177096417911147
