From the article: Tesla announced it has broken ground on its latest Supercharger project, dubbed ‘Oasis,’ in Lost Hills, California. This isn’t your ordinary Supercharger station, as it will be the world’s largest and serve as a key charging hub on one of the busiest electric vehicle (EV) corridors in the world, Interstate 5, between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The announcement was made by Max de Zegher, Director of Charging for North America at Tesla. According to de Zegher, crews broke ground at Oasis today, and the site is scheduled to open by mid-2025.

It will probably attract that kind of facilities if its busy enough.
But, but…I thought Tesla wasn’t investing in their charging network anymore?
People will brush this under the rug and then get outraged again at the next news story, learning absolutely nothing.
Do the others mentioned in the article have stuff like that? I ask because I know someone with an organization that wants to exptend charging availability into very rural areas like the upper peninsula of Michigan. The orgs initial plan for stations include some of the types of amenities you would find at a travel plaza on an interstate.
I don't know that I like this. It's like a Buc-ee's for EVs. I can't imagine the traffic. I would probably avoid it if I could. Honestly, I wish we could massively expand level 2 charging networks. I probably don't need more than half the supercharger's that I use. I just have to use them as destination chargers when I travel for the kids' sports teams. If there were L2 chargers at every hotel, restaurant, and ice rink, I would literally never supercharge and leave those chargers open for others. But still cool I guess to see them doing something on such a large scale. The should definitely include a ton of pull through chargers that are blocked to those that aren't towing.
I wonder if they will have ways to find open chargers with that many options it could be chaotic
Barstow isn't all that small of a town. It's big enough to have a Freddy's Frozen Custard which are pretty thin on the ground in California. Honestly as long as they have bathrooms there I'm good.
We have a grocery store that has free level 2 charging in my town. Never shopped at this place prior to buying an EV. Now, I am a frequent shopper.
60 miles south on the I5 is the Supercharger at Wheeler Ridge with 70+.
I was just thinking about that outrage. Elon is always blowing stuff up and powering through. Happens in all of his companies. The media posts about it, Redditors proclaim how dumb it is and how Elon needs to get booted, and then forget about it when doom never comes and the cycle continues.
Stall is a good word for this.
And 30 miles north you’ve got 90 chargers at the two Kettleman City locations. Pretty hard to not find an open charger in that area soon.

There's already a 98 supercharger station at Harris Ranch and it's a breeze to use. I went there on one of the busiest driving days of the year and had no problems at all. The supercharging area is all 1 way traffic and there's no general parking anywhere near it.
Every charging station I've been to so far has had some sort of restroom available. I even went to one that was still under construction and they had porta potty trailers set up.
I agree that nearly everywhere should have level 2 charging. I disagree with your assumption that level 2 charging would eliminate the need for supercharger stations.

They will have at least 11 pull through stalls for vehicles towing. I hope they'll figure someway of policing those at least.
It's still terrible management that costs the company so much money. Relationships and contacts need to be reset. Institutional knowledge is reset. It's just not great leadership

Quite the opposite. It saves a ton of money. Some is wasted of course, but far less than what is saved. That's why his companies are so capital efficient.

I have not been to a supercharger that did not have things nearby like food or attractions

Because that's pretty much how these I-5 locations have to work. Plus you get the shade.
It's all scaled up for the Thanksgiving travel mess so normally the 5 is a breeze.
As a Canadian, this is amazing. The biggest supercharger install in Canada is close enough to my house that I can't use it, but whenever we're travelling long distance, we run into 8 stall superchargers far more than anything larger.
Lol. I was there last year when it hit 50c. I had already blown one tire coming into LA. My M3 didn't seem to care about the heat though.
Oh I've been to plenty, but not many along interstate 5, and certainly not in California.
They have some attached to hotels that I've been to. If you wanted food or anything it was a half mile or so walk. Kinda sucks

The 5 is kind of an unusual situation. Connects Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area, people drive it a lot especially for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and there's not a whole lot in between. And depending on where exactly you're going to/from you probably need to charge twice, maybe three times. Anyway there are some smaller stations but they've increasingly gone to these mega stops rather than have more frequent but smaller stops that could get overwhelmed.

O wow. Ya i haven't seen something like that here in CA or on my road trips to Vegas or Tahoe. farthest we walked for food was across a massive parking lot since the superchargers were in front of a huge sporting goods store
I’ve been to just over 100 different superchargers coast to coast in the US across all hours of the day. *Most* are in parking lots near one or more: fast food, a supermarket, gas station, or hotel. These places have bathrooms during the day, from 10-8am is a different story. There is the occasional travel center style, (like Bucees in the south, Wally’s in the Midwest, or the new Rove in California) that is a perfect charging stop with clean restrooms and food 24/7. Also drop the rare Tesla lounges in there like Kettleman City where you key code in. Regular gas stations that have chargers to the side you’ll have a 50/50 chance the bathroom is open at night, I’ve been through several that close it for “cleaning”. The vast majority of chargers out on the interstate do not have restrooms after hours. That fast food restaurant is closed, welcome center is closed, Target/Lowes is closed, supermarket closed, the entire mall is closed and it’s a mile walk to get off property. I have to praise Holiday Inn for their SC stations at many locations. So far I have not had issue using their bathrooms at 15+ locations. I wish Tesla had made a deal with Flying J. They are open 24/7 and have relatively clean bathrooms. I’ve stopped at a couple and tested out their overpriced GM branded EVgo chargers, utterly terrible.

I've been to plenty where the only thing around is a gas station/corner store, the last 2 I went to only had a health grocer, and the other was next to a Hilton hotel and that's it. I wish they all had a bathroom, lounge, even a garbage bin lol. I don't mind the ones that are at the back of malls it's a bit of a trek sometimes but the mall usually has clean bathrooms, tons of food court options, and a place to just stretch legs and walk a bit. Then again I seldom spend more than 15-20 minutes and find myself rushing out to the car when at superchargers lol
How many have solar canopies? Less than five?
The largest gas station in the USA has 120 pumps. This supercharger station has even more plugs. Pretty cool to see. Keep them coming!

I only listen to redditors outside Tesla subreddits because they're those most informed and educated individuals with no bias whatsoever.
They just need to partner with Buccees (ik that won’t go over well) an EV only buccees type place would be a dope place to stop and charge
How many other locations have Megapacks?
For me Bay Area to lost hills is about 250 miles. I’m planning on doing that route next month and looking forward to InO on the way. What was last years news all about laying off all of the Tesla supercharger employees? If autonomous driving becomes normal, will this make the high speed rail obsolete? The charger drive thru feature will advance the electric truck and trailer usage. I might need to resubscribe to the premium connectivity just to watch content while I charge. Lost Hills there is Blackwell corner market where James Dean made his last stop.
Tesla usually adds semis with superchargers on them in busy locations. Get a CCS adapter and you can charge for free at the caltrans rest stops as well. Of course, those are usually busy due to Bolts and other cars that charge so slowly
Texas’s I-35 and I-10 corridors could use the same. And there will be no lack of sun to power the station.
I hope to see a software solution in the future. They could even assign stalls for people based on if they are in towing mode or not

Sounds like a great opportunity for local business to place themselves nearby. Would be much better to have coal businesses running it than Tesla themselves. Competition drives innovation
That’s only 50ish miles from Harris Ranch which already has 98 superchargers. But this is good news because Lost Hill was exactly where I had to stop to charge on the way to SoCal.

Less than four?
Not thanksgiving but I went the 4th of July. Not once did I have to wait. Busiest station was probably kettleman city but everyone just wants the lounge when it’s really hot outside. The 55 stall station that’s next to an in n out across the street had many stalls available.
This is why I actually keep an electric kickscooter in my trunk.
I haven't seen a list but of the four stations I stop at on the I-5 two have giant solar arrays and Tesla got approval to put in megapacks in at least four locations along the same freeway a couple years ago.
On just the I-5? Firebaugh and Harris Ranch and Kettleman City at a minimum. I haven't stopped at all of them but it's becoming a standard thing on that stretch. I would expect all new projects on that corridor to have it as a matter of course because there's no way the local rural utility lines can handle a giant project otherwise and they've filled in all the more urban ones already.
I wouldn't be that concerned but I'd definitely keep an eye on it and maybe plan on charging a little earlier rather than later as a hedge. And make sure you're always navigating to a larger location and not a 12 stall or whatever.
I hope it becomes standard. I would love to see a least a couple along that stretch fully solar powered.
Yeah for sure, it's nice for the shade/rain protection. But I don't know that they'll be in a hurry in places like the outlets where presumably the power infrastructure is better than "near Barstow".

Yeah exactly. If you think about it, with say a 56 stall station, and everybody charges for 15 minutes, you're still getting almost four people a minute leaving. With a 12 stall if your timing sucks it can be a while, and people who had to wait tend to charge up more than they intended because they're less confident n the next stop and it kind of snowballs.
Yes, a lot old arcane knowledge is lost. But it was only needed because it was so badly run before. Let new excited people come in and make some mistakes, sure, but they will move fast and get progress done quickly and less total cost.

They also have cheap/free rates for charging at off-peak times at certain locations.
That’s literally what Elon said at the time. I’m glad they backtracked after we all (rightly) voiced our dissatisfaction.
Even a full charge is 40mins at most, which really isn't much time at all. Walking a short distance to a toilet, shop, getting something to take out and then eating it chews up most of that time, then you have to move so you don't get additional charges
Lost Hills is my stopover from Bay Area to LA and back. Got my McDonalds, Carl’s Jr, Wendy’s there. Haven’t tried driving my Model Y there yet. Might try it when this gets built.
NYC needs something like this badly for all the Ubers that cause 2+ hour lines despite the terms stating they’re not allowed to use public superchargers. I drive from Boston to the Philly and dc area at least 5 times a year and I ALWAYS avoid charging in nyc. I’ll charge early in CT up to 100% just so I can get to my destination without touching an nyc charging location. Even one location like this would solve the entire issue for the area.
Carry an empty Gatorade bottle and a 5 gallon Home Depot bucket with a lid and a trash bag and some tp, wet wipes, and hand sanitizer. You can do your business anywhere in an emergency without sacrificing much room or weight.

Yeah, they did, fortunate that there was enough of an uproar that the decision was reversed. Tesla didn't say "We've sacked the whole team, but don't worry, nothing is changing" They said "Tesla would add to the Supercharger network where critical, as well as complete new stations currently under construction." So something changed.

Kettleman City has an indoor lounge with restrooms, couches and chairs, vending machines, and a barrista during busy periods. There are sone restaurants within walking distance
I have bern to a couple along 5 that had nothing. As in zilch.
