From the article: Ford has asked its EV owners to stop charging their cars with their supplied Tesla NACS adapters. The American automaker promises to provide replacements to curb slow charging speeds and potential damage. Many Ford EV owners were excited to finally use Tesla’s popular Superchargers earlier this year. However, Ford has asked them to stop charging with the adapters that allowed them to access the Supercharger network. The automaker cited a “potential issue” that could cause the battery to charge slower or even damage the charging port. Ford states, “Over time, continued usage may result in reduced charging speeds. As such, Ford does not recommend using the adapter initially supplied to you with any vehicle from this time on, and we will be sending you a replacement. It is imperative that we receive all adapters affected to reduce the risk of potential vehicle damage.”

It’s stupid stuff like this that made me stop looking at the F150 Lightning. Native NACS all the way.
Likely something getting hot and melting since NACS requires temperature monitoring at the plug. IMO, that would explain slowed charge speeds and potential “damage”.
It says it only affects one batch of the adapters... so I assume if one didn't receive any correspondence from Ford on this, you're safe?
If you are adopting NACS, put the NACS port on your car and on the correct side where NACS superchargers require them to be. Then build a better native faster UI. Manage your batteries better. Make that battery port close automatically. And stop pretending that you are any competition to the Teslas before doing all that. Enough with this adapter nonsense. All these non-Tesla EVs are busy playing “who’s the tallest midget?” when Tesla are selling away millions of cars despite a lunatic CEO at its helm, excuse my lack of correctness. People have already forgiven Ford enough for HVBJB issues, terrible service centers, and ridiculous pricing. Mach-E GT Performance is otherwise a fantastic crossover with many safety features like rear cross traffic alert, 360 camera, parking sensors, radar, etc. Tesla doesn’t even have (except it is a little smaller compared to the Y for tall folks so I had to sell it). But unfortunately the company behind it has completely botched its reputation and value. And this is another example of that. First take months to ship an adapter and then recall. Same has happened to Kia and Hyundai cars to a certain extent (America’s best warranty my a**). And the German EVs are just being weird with their pricing and overall approach to EVs. At least Ford’s in line for NACS adoption which I commend them for in addition to Rivian but they’re simply half-baking the adoption. That’s my issue. There are reasons Tesla continues to dominate the market. And most of those reasons are supplied by the non-Tesla EV makers themselves!

Then why are they replacing the adapter and not the chargers? I've also seen video evidence of an F150 lightning just dropping dead from 13% after using a ton of super chargers, but yeah I'm sure it's the chargers and not the truck.

The reason I don't like any of the non-tesla EV's so far is the manufacturers seem to be hell bent on re using ICE platforms and adapting them to be EV's. I've only been in a tesla one time, and I was blown away by the interior difference. The flat floor with no tranny tunnel etc. I had a bit of an epiphany. Designing an EV platform from the ground up changes the way the platform needs to be built. There is a reason my volt is cramped and is basically a heavier worse chevy cruz. It was built from compromise. (It's also the best/most practical vehicle i've ever owned).

So first of, best adapter is no adapter. Second it could be a few different things. for example Communication error. This could potentially be a serious problem where the car stops the charge and releases the adapter but the contact in the charger is still close and fuses and arcing happens. Different issue could be bad pins in these first gen adapters. Ford got theirs first, that's why they are not concerned about the Rivian adapters. This is just my guess. I'm trying to get the hold of one so I can open it and investigate more.
Yeah I've been telling my friends to hold off on buying any non Tesla EVs right now. Wait for the native NACS ports to come standard on non Tesla EVs

I don’t personally see the issue with that specific thing. Absolutely use the chargers ideally when your cars take ONE spot. I’d love to have all EV owners to charge besides me. It’s literally a non issue given I’ve owned all types of EVs to date and have charged them everywhere. But NOT when you’re just gonna park awkwardly and take two spots etc. (even when the charger isn’t busy). The car makers are 100% at fault for this half assed adoption but Tesla is also letting them do this because it is also greedy. So yeah, we are going to be tolerant because it’s not the drivers fault but if the EV adoption continues to grow and lines get longer, not sure if that’s gonna last too long.
Oh no, I don’t mind others use the chargers either. But if you go to that subreddit all they do is talk shit about Tesla but they wanna use the chargers cause EA is garbage. I just think it’s a bit ironic.

I’ve been on the waiting list since July 2023 for an adapter for my 2023 Lightning. I called a few weeks ago and confirmed I’m still on the list. The Ford rep told me there was no timeline. /shrug

The adapters that Ford uses are made by Tesla. Maybe that's why.

They have a pretty great infrastructure and product. FWIW, it was only a batch of the adapters, not all of them. Sometimes things are out of spec.
Yeah of course! It happens with all products out there. But that’s what the Tesla haters forget. Look at Chevy and all the recalls they have but that’s not an issue.

All the official adapters are manufactured by Tesla. Same with the Rivian and Chevy adapters.
It’s only one potentially faulty batch of adapters produced and shipped in June. Those affected have been sent an email and issued a recall notice in their FordPass app. Ford will send a replacement adapter and the customer will place their adapter in the box to be sent back with a pre-paid label. It’s pretty low drama, really…

Your comment is basically that members of a group that actively decided not to buy a Tesla vehicle (Rivian, Ford, GM) because they didn’t like the S,3,X or Y are commenting that they didn’t like the S, 3, X, or Y? Isn’t that what you would expect? As for the superchargers, Tesla opened them up. It wasn’t an option before to just purchase a charging plan and opt for a different vehicle. Why wouldn’t they take advantage of that? Just because they didn’t like the Tesla vehicles doesn’t mean they don’t like the infrastructure. I guess I am not sure why it is ironic?

I'm not sure yet. Huge initial sales could be based on a bunch of things, however I don't think the Cybertruck is a good truck. Maybe it's good at whatever it is, but for someone like me, it doesn't meet any of my needs for a truck. Similar to a chevy avalanche. Ok so it's not enough of a truck to do truck things but not enough of a large SUV to do large SUV stuff either. It does have some smart ideas.

What do you mean a decade ago? It was opened for use by other manufacturers than Tesla in Nov. 2022: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_Charging_System It will take time for the other manufacturers to redesign the cars to move the charge port. Does 2025 Ford cars have native NACS then? It’ll have been 3 years on paper since NACS opened up.
Again: 1. The SAE standard just came out a couple of weeks ago. Some manufacturers wait for that. 2. I don’t know about other cars, but the MachE hasn’t been refreshed since it came out. I am guessing maybe in 2025 or 2026 they will switch to NACS? Not sure about about if they will move location of charge port. But I am guessing this will be dependent on when a particular vehicle goes through its refresh cycle starting now.

Tesla needs to recall all these adapters, not just Ford. Make sure they are 100 safe. Take their time. Even if it takes a couple of years to release again.... or never.
Every Mach E is a ticking time bomb for HVBJB. 2021-2022 more so than 2023-2024 but they’re all susceptible, period. That said, it’s now a recall so it’s going to be covered out of warranty. Just don’t know if the “fix” is going to be a permanent one.

I think you're overstating the impact of wrong sided charging ports. Unless you're parking horizontally across stalls, a single car charging on the wrong side takes up two spots, but two such cars only take up three spots, three such cars take up four spots, etc.

Why? Are you dependent on public super charging? If so, then buying an EV will not save you any money. I have owned my Lightning for a year and Only charged at home or free public Lvl 2. The Lightning is a fantastic truck!

I've never needed a truck that at the same time I didn't need an 8' or longer box to haul equipment or material/lumber. My towing needs are also a lot heavier than the tesla offers, and my on deck payload is often higher. For the record I'm one of the rare few that drives an economy electric car for day to day commuting, and only uses their truck for work, and recreation (camping, hauling ATVs etc) It's a 2005 F350 Dually with a flat deck. It's noisy, ugly, loud and stinky but when it's used for trucking, it's as good as anything out there for my needs. I did a haul up to the Yukon and back with it recently, weighing a little over 20,000lbs with trailer and averaged 11mpg in the mountains doing 100kph. When it's not being used it's parked. Just have a battery tender running to it.
Ah yes; my understanding is that CT is more comparable to F150, so that clearly isn’t enough for your case. Ha, my minivan is sort of comparable to your truck — it’s also a 2005 (Odyssey), and I use it for long family road trips (though last one was two years ago), and for hauling stuff to Goodwill, from Costco, etc., and the rest of the time it’s on the battery tender, on standby as the backup car. I was hoping to replace it with Cybertruck, but then Tesla switched it from 6 to 5 passengers max, so sadly it no longer works for me, unless my situation changes.
Yeah, I liked a lot about it but didn’t want to get vehicle with a charging port that wouldn’t be native within in the few years. If they had a NACS swap for a cost I would’ve considered it
The adapter damaged my brother's charge port on his Mach-E. Top of the port (J1772 portion) still works fortunately so the vehicle didn't need towed, but can't fast charge any more and vechcle is now sitting a Ford dealer out of state from where he lives.

The wording around “reduced charging speeds” implies to me that there’s a thermal issue. Both the vehicle and the charger should have temperature sensors on the charge pins, and a common scheme is to reduce current until the pins cool off. But if they’re getting hot because of arcing/a loose connection, that throttling won’t really help and things will melt/get damaged for sure.
Still silly. CCS will be around for A LONG time and more and more Tesla superchargers being installed are installed with the Magic dock which works just fine. Great thing about the Lightning is the very flat charging curve! Much better than majority of EVs out there including Tesla. It’s a flat 150 pretty much up to 80%
Yeah an F150 isn't much of a truck either. Maybe the one with the 8' box would be fine.
Hopefully third party adapters come out soon because build quality of the OEM ones is trash and I don't trust it even before this.
The Ford, Rivian, and Chevy all use the same adapter designed and manufactured by Tesla. I have a friend with the Ford adapter, I have the Rivian and just got the GM adapter. They all have the exact same numbers on the bottom side of the charger. The serial numbers are the only difference. Yeah, I think there was a recall on that specific adapter. That link was to this one: https://ev-lectron.com/products/lectron-vortex-plug-tesla-supercharger-nacs-to-ccs-adapter There’s several to choose from, but outside the Tesla one I’m not sure which is the best. Mines worked well and hasn’t burned up my car, so that’s good.
Also, are you sure you won’t get one through Ford?
That’s something I’ve wondered, I know people who have had theirs for awhile have been getting theirs but I’m not sure how it’s getting handled if you just bought one.. would be pretty nice honestly
For what it’s worth, when I picked up my Rivian I was told the charger is being shipped from Tesla and I was maybe three months out. I keep seeing reports of people getting their chargers, so they’re being delivered, but there’s no way to track it as far as I know. I wish! Was battling getting my at home charge station put in, then figured I’d peep into the adapter. Which.. I’m hearing the Tesla stations that are newer have them built in. The at home station I got has a universal situation and it’s pretty neat.
