Look up Chuck or Dirty Tesla videos to see tips on how they behave. Those of us that have been with it iteration after iteration know its limitations and pitfalls. My own tips are these:
Never trust a turn near a curb, you can still easily get curb rash
Lane changes are always subject to cancelling and swerving you back in your own lane, I have auto lane change set to minimal because it’s still so bad at just naturally being in the correct lane or moving to the correct lane when it should.
It will stop 100% at stop signs due to legal reasons, then it will confuse anyone else at the stop, then when it goes it will jolt you back.
The fact that it makes you uneasy vs scared for your life is a good thing—it really has come a long way.

I use it mostly on the highway - makes trips much less stressful. I don’t trust it for really tight turns or for tight construction zones. Off the highway it depends on where you are. I have homes in some rural areas and so it may not see a stop sign or whatnot if there is a branch in front of it….so when it finally sees it, it slams on the brakes. Stuff like that isn’t cool. It’s great in stop and go traffic though.

This sounds like you're describing 12.3.6. I haven't seen it go near a curb with 12.5.4.1 and the start from a stop is more gentle now.
Naturebrah
2024-10-18 03:44
It’s more gentle but if we didn’t have the first terrible iteration as a reference point, we’d be saying the same thing about it now.
Mine will definitely still get too close to certain curbs. FSD always yields different results for different people based on their locations 🤷

Unbelievable progress with FSD. Had it years ago and it was just meh. Just used it for a 24 minute drive and didn’t have any interventions. The REAL game changer is using the interior cabin.
This is now worth $99 a month for my ~50 minute round trip commute. I can’t believe they actually are the is close. It was weird to just “relax” while driving.

Been using FSD since I got my new 24 Model 3. Before I had a 2018 Model 3 with enhanced AP. I had like 105k with that. FSD is sooooo good now. I am legit amazed at how good it is now. It did just a roundabout to a roundabout to a roundabout well. If I was driving I might've fucked that up.

I’m on FSD v12.5.4.1 and my experience is similar. It’s good on long freeway stretches without complication but has given me many issues on other routes.
- Lane-keeping literally got worse (maybe a vision-only problem). It will struggle to center the lane and will drive over lines when turning some not so tight curves. It will struggle to pick a lane when 1-lane turns in to 2.
- It occasionally doesn’t register a green light: it wouldn’t turn left at a junction when it turned green for me with blinker on. Another time, it decided to slam the brake on an already green light and almost caused an accident.
- It will occasionally miss the speed sign and continue to drive faster or slower than the speed limit, annoying me and other drivers. But somehow it will somehow change the speed limit after registering the speed limit for trucks that are 3 axles or more and will slow down.
It may be because my Tesla is on HW3, and some aspects have improved over the past 5 years I’ve been using but it’s hard to trust it will not just drive off the road or cause an accident.
Maybe it will get there in the next 5-10 years

yeah I can’t stand chuck. Many times, in my opinion FSD did perfectly fine, just not how Chuck would do it, but he is saying it as if FSD couldn’t progress further if they don’t adjust it to his preferences. It annoys me mainly when FSD takes more precautions and is just driving safer and it seems to be problem for him, as he would be 5 seconds late to his destination.
I like Dirty Tesla, but it seems that his is working too good now and he struggles to find new challenging situations. It’s nice knowing it is getting better, but watching 20 minutes of video with one disengagement is not worth the time.
AI drivr seems the best for me. Black Tesla also confuses preferences with performance too much. Like if it handles maneuver perfectly fine, legally and also not disturbing anyone, there is no point in criticizing it that it didn’t get in the lane sooner. Maybe show us a video where that’s a problem?

I have ‘European fsd’ and even that is very useful for highway driving. Needing to indicate to change lane is annoying and stupid (laws) but supposedly they are looking into relaxing these absurd restrictions.

If you are a hardware four-car with V12.5 or better, the best thing you can do is keep your hands close to the wheel and act like you are in a dual-control car with your teenage driver learning to drive. It should take a while for you to get used to how the car drives, but for me, I hardly ever drive anymore. I tell the car where I want to go, get it started down the road, and take over when it is time to park at the destination. It handles construction zones fine. My biggest problem is a traffic light about 100 feet before my street, and sometimes, the car turns right at the light into a parking lot with three speedbumps to get to my street on the other side of the lot. Sometimes, mistakes are made, but most will be corrected, like not getting into a lane it needs to turn. It will then change navigation and get back to where it should be. It would be best if you kept it from doing something dumb like going the wrong way down a street; things you can tell are obviously wrong. It does zipper merges fine when going from 2 lanes to 1 lane. It reacts to things before I see them. Most of the time, it is a better driver than I am. Oh, another problem I have is it wants to park in front of the house behind the house I want to visit sometimes. It stops at that house rather than going around the block to the house I want to visit. Sometimes, it hunts whether I turn left or go straight while in a parking lot. Primarily, you must relax and let the car do its thing for a while. I have 28000 miles and most of it was with V11 on freeways V12 is night and day better. I do not think I have driven more than 2000 miles. The car has done the rest.

You were uneasy about - for the first time - letting a piece of software (with associated hardware) control you while barreling down the highway? I can't understand why. :)
I had the trial about 6 months ago. It was MORE stressful for a while as I didn't know what to expect. In the end, I decided not to purchase. I just did not feel that if you use it the way you are supposed to, with constant "supervision", it's really not worth it. Others may feel differently.

Don't get too excited. In Australia it only works between intersections and is easily spooked. You need to learn it's idiosyncrasies and disengage regularly. I feel safer using FSD but it isn't for everyone.

Exactly. And that's what I do. FSD seems to love lane changes that cut off large trucks, so until they fix that, I'll do my own lane changes, thank you.
It'd be nice if this setting was settable for all trips and not just the current one.
handspin
2024-10-18 16:22
Yeah, the minimum lane changes setting.
The one ups manship is human nature.
We tend to egg each other to do better.
In this case, we are pressuring human tech.
The premise is good, but standing in front of a waymo just cause is not the greatest moment.
People already do not let others change lanes, so this case just gets worse with cruise control.
We are almost forcing a situation where we need the AI to become a negotiator of bad human behavior.
When in reality we could just self regulate and avoid the inevitable.

I have a 21 M3 and got the free trial a number of months ago (v11?). That convinced me to pay for FSD for my 2020 MS a few months back. That car already had Enhanced AP when I bought it used so only had to pay $2k. Now have v12.5 on the S and have driven about 2k miles on FSD. There are occasional disengagements but I have grown to be very confident in FSD.
Discovered today that my M3 got another free trial. Used it to go the 4 miles to the library and it performed flawlessly. Getting better with every update. V13 is supposed to be out soon.
I see that the M3 trial is v12.3, and my purchased FSD on the MS is 12.5.

The problem is that you have to have your eyes open like a hawk or bag you. Regular autopilot is much more less stressful on highways for me than FSD.
hibernate2020
2024-10-18 18:14
Well, you get to the crux of the issue with FSD. If everyone was using it, it'd be fine. (Or an AI/cruise control only lane would be cool.) But it is unable to account for human behaviours. We can gauge the patterns of other drivers and see if their aggressive, etc. (E.g., if you see Bobby Beamer speeding up and aggressively passiving people, you know to avoid trying to pass him.) the computer can't do that.

2024-10-21 15:48
It takes a while to develop confidence in how it drives and where it needs help. After a few days with it you can anticipate where you're going to have to intervene.
Alas with new versions you kind of have to go through that again.
Once you're at that point, it's like a godsend. You can actually focus on the traffic, and not just staying between the lines or avoiding obstacles. Stop-and-go commutes and long road trips are almost relaxing.

Has anyone found a way to disable the trial completely this time around? Even with FSD turned off, the trial makes changes to both the UI and functionality of normal autopilot/autosteer. Last time around, those changes remained until the end of the trial when (thankfully) it finally went back to normal.
The biggest annoyance for me is the change to how the turn signal and autosteer work together.
Normal: If autosteer is on, and you turn the wheel, it resists strongly. If you use the turn signal, it allows the wheel to turn much more easily for lane changes.
Trial: If autosteer is on, the turn signal initiates an automatic lane change but keeps the wheel "locked" against user input.
There does not seem to be anywhere that I can disable this lane-change thing, which isn't a feature my car normally has (and kinda sucks anyway, since it can't ever find an opening large enough for it to change lanes). I wouldn't mind the trials if they were truly optional, but instead it just installs itself and screws things up for a month with no way to disable it.
