From the article: Tesla currently offers free music streaming with every Tesla, although you’ll need Tesla’s Premium Connectivity package to stream over the vehicle’s cellular data or be on WiFi. In North America, Tesla includes what they used to call “Streaming,” and have just recently renamed to call LiveOne. However, in Europe, where LiveOne isn’t available, Tesla provides a free license for Spotify, which allows owners to stream the service for free without having to subscribe. However, it looks like this may be coming to an end. We recently received an anonymous tip that Tesla would be ending this free benefit for its European customers. While we haven’t been able to confirm this just yet, it does seem likely. Let’s take a look at why we think this could be happening.

At least in Australia which i suspect is similar to Europe, the 'free' car-only Spotify account is only available if you subscribe to Premium Connectivity.

ChemistStrange6801 2024-09-29 11:57

I have had a Tesla for 5 years and have never opened streaming and honestly didnt know it was there so I personally wont miss anything.

[deleted] 2024-09-29 11:57

Can you do this with iPhone

rocketsarego 2024-09-29 12:02

Yes

iwannabethecyberguy 2024-09-29 12:02

I’m okay with it if it enables increased bandwidth for higher-quality streaming from the other apps.

Revolutionary-Fact73 2024-09-29 12:03

I have premium connectivity for a few reasons, but since they added YouTube Music, I haven’t used Tesla’s streaming music at all. I’m actually glad I don’t miss it anymore. Before YouTube however, I used it all the time.

DesperateAd423 2024-09-29 12:19

Make an automation with shortcuts to turn on wifi once your car is connected to your phone’s Bluetooth.

Joatboy 2024-09-29 12:19

If so they should really think of downsizing the wheel size. 18" standard would improve margins, ride comfort and consumer replacement costs.

powaking 2024-09-29 12:45

Hasn’t worked for me past couple of years.

nixforme12 2024-09-29 12:57

Same

SnorfOfWallStreet 2024-09-29 13:59

Can you read?

zikronix 2024-09-29 14:00

The free streaming app and provider sucks. Remove it

moldy912 2024-09-29 14:04

It’s not like you’re streaming from multiple services at once. It is likely the renewal was too costly for them and they probably have data that few people use it anyway.

flycasually 2024-09-29 14:15

Idk how to do it automatically. Anytime you put the car in drive, it turns WiFi off, and you have to manually go into settings and turn on WiFi after so you can connect to your phones hotspot. Idk how people are automating this as this is a setting on the car that needs to be toggled anytime you put it in drive.

donrhummy 2024-09-29 14:22

Are you able to get podcasts to work on YouTube music?

bijansoleymani 2024-09-29 14:31

There's a setting/toggle for each wifi connection in the wifi menu to keep that wifi network connected after putting the car in drive.

Lewd_Meat_ 2024-09-29 14:42

I think tesla could've knocked it out of the park with a free Spotify sub with the premium connectivity in NA

ReliefOne4665 2024-09-29 14:46

Tesla didn't provide a free license for Spotify.

Tricky-Mood904 2024-09-29 14:51

I use Apple Music so it’s not free for me 😅

freakdahouse 2024-09-29 14:56

And free tacos for everyone!

aps23 2024-09-29 15:00

YouTube music works great it's exactly the same as Spotify

copperwatt 2024-09-29 15:08

So it's free if you pay for it? Wow. So generous.

katsbridle 2024-09-29 15:11

I had used this approach with iPhone automations but it was hit or miss and when miss spent minutes fiddling with phone and car. I ended up deciding it was worth it to save the hassle and spend the $10/mo for premium

kenypowa 2024-09-29 15:13

Free tacos and free blowjobs. This will jump Yesla EV marketshare to over 90%.

amishraa 2024-09-29 15:18

I tried but wasn’t fan of their UI compared to Spotify. Seemed cluttered and harder to find things.

Instinct043 2024-09-29 15:35

I think you can use a free tesla account to use Spotify instead of your own account. Perhaps that's what they are referring to?

Ice_Burn 2024-09-29 15:38

When I first read this I mistakenly thought it was all music services. I DGAF about this. I’m very good with YouTube Music and I’ll be even better when SiriusXM streaming comes on board.

farmyohoho 2024-09-29 15:57

Yeah but was that a paid Spotify account? I've been paying for Spotify long before I got a Tesla so I never bothered with the vehicle account. Also it doesn't really make sense to have a separate account in your vehicle. I want to continue listening to whatever I was listening to on my phone when I get in the car.

Instinct043 2024-09-29 15:58

Yes as far as I remember it was a paid/premium account. But I'm in the same boat as you. I like to sync to my music in the car etc

farmyohoho 2024-09-29 16:00

Oh wow, didn't know that. I'd rather have them offer free TuneIn in Europe. Although 1 commercial when you get in the car isn't the worst

Instinct043 2024-09-29 16:03

I use tunein often. And some radio stations have the commercials and some don't. Is that what it is? As soon as I get the commercial I find a different station. Both stations that don't have commercials that I listen to are Dutch, if that helps.

farmyohoho 2024-09-29 16:06

I listen to Belgian radio stations, I live in Spain, so the FM radio isn't an option. There were stations without commercials for a long time, but a couple months ago I started getting 1 every time I get in the car. The commercial is also in Flemish, so it actually took a while for me to notice them lol

Instinct043 2024-09-29 16:09

If you don't mind them, I recommend trying MNM, they have different genre radio station, they're Belgian. The one I currently like the most is slam! Juize. Very hip hop and pop heavy. So hope that's your taste haha

darthwilliam1118 2024-09-29 16:09

Capitalism drives all products to maximize profitability, this is also referred to as enshittification. Products lose features over time as the company is driven towards increasing profitability.

flying-auk 2024-09-29 16:10

I spent the time to export my playlists from Spotify and import them into Youtube Music but the podcasts function in Youtube Music is horrible so far. Some podcasts don't update while some others throw errors.

cac2573 2024-09-29 16:19

It doesn't work

thehypercube 2024-09-29 16:20

Yes, they do.

wdbutrym 2024-09-29 16:25

jeffoag 2024-09-29 16:27

Free Sportif is only for Europe Tesla owners. US and Canada get free Slacker radio.

MyChickenSucks 2024-09-29 16:36

You mean the orange music button? I use it all the time for random genre stations. Spotify is a mess because I listen to too many podcasts and audiobooks while walking the dogs - the entire home page in my Tesla is no longer music.

VRShaun 2024-09-29 16:42

Yes

Glad_Departure_4598 2024-09-29 16:42

This is one reason I haven’t gotten a Tesla - can’t stream lossless or high res from my phone. With such excellent speakers in the cars, Bluetooth is a letdown.

donrhummy 2024-09-29 16:43

I'm taking about the Tesla YouTube music in-car app

crewman4 2024-09-29 16:43

I have free Spotify in my EU Y!?

donrhummy 2024-09-29 16:44

I'm taking about the Tesla YouTube music in-car app

flying-auk 2024-09-29 16:45

That's exactly what I referred to. The podcast section of the in-car app doesn't work properly. it's not an issue for me on any other platform.

thelvaenir 2024-09-29 17:03

Yes

ZEEN0j 2024-09-29 17:13

It’s great! We use Apple Music in our family and not Spotify. My kids can use the Spotify account in the car and when I want to listen to my music I switch to Apple Music. Nice way to still keep my own recommendations

FuzzyFr0g 2024-09-29 18:24

If you have premium connectivity you do. Only iseable in the Y tho

bumbumboogie 2024-09-29 18:25

Yes. With an automation. But once you put the car in drive, you’ll have to turn on the car’s wifi to connect to your phone.

zhuki 2024-09-29 18:26

They do in europe, you dont need spotify premium, you use the cars account, and its basically spotify premium.

Flightofnine 2024-09-29 18:46

Be careful doing this my car uploaded 40gb of data over the span of 3 days using my phone causing my service provider to limit my bandwidth to almost unusable speeds on my "unlimited" plan.

InertiaCreeping 2024-09-29 19:00

In NZ you press “use cars account” or something like that and you get free, premium Spotify with no ads.

omnibossk 2024-09-29 19:07

I use the car Spotify all the time. I’ll miss it for sure.

NightOfTheLivingHam 2024-09-29 19:40

it only says removing spotify free. nothing about removing the streaming in NA.

Muffstic 2024-09-29 19:41

Do you guys not get the constant error messages on YouTube music? We get them on both my car and my wife's car both signed into different accounts.

NightOfTheLivingHam 2024-09-29 19:41

slacker (the basis of tesla's streaming) loves removing and re-adding music all the time

ReliefOne4665 2024-09-29 19:46

I see, I am in the US.

elmexiken 2024-09-29 19:49

FLAC via USB is the way.

thehypercube 2024-09-29 19:57

It's part of the connectivity package. A Spotify account for your car.

AdventureD887 2024-09-29 20:02

I have using Spotify for years, primarily because of easy to use and navigate UI and compatability on all my platforms. I was not pleased with audio quality so moved to Tidal. YouTube Music and Spotify use ACC file format, which is very "lossy". Even at the highest fidelity settings, the quality is much poorer than Tidal's FLAK file format. Big difference in sound on the Tesla's audio system and our home audio. Tidal does not have a robust of podcasts however, at least compared to Spotify.

[deleted] 2024-09-29 20:26

[deleted]

Glad_Departure_4598 2024-09-29 20:37

Tidal on Tesla lets you pre-download selected songs and albums in 44.1/16 CD quality, or use your limited mobile hotspot data which will go quick in lossless. It doesn’t even do higher resolutions and bit depths that Tidal is capable of.  That’s not nearly as good as streaming any song you want in CD or better quality on demand from Apple Music or Tidal on your phone with an unlimited data plan. Almost any other car, you can connect your phone to the system via USB and stream without loss of quality. Tesla for some reason has an issue with that.

[deleted] 2024-09-29 20:47

[deleted]

Glad_Departure_4598 2024-09-29 20:48

Not a USB drive - I can plug my iPhone into a Prius or ID4 and stream lossless music from apps on my phone. The Tesla can only take a USB drive, but to get the sound from the phone you need to use Bluetooth, which degrades the signal. It is frustrating that Teslas have such great sound systems but functionally prohibit you from using them the way any other car allows you to. This has been an issue for years:  https://www.notateslaapp.com/software-updates/upcoming-features/id/780/elon-hints-at-adding-lossless-audio-and-airplay-support

zipxavier 2024-09-29 21:07

TheMartian2k14 2024-09-29 21:18

Holy crap. What the hell are they sending?

snark42 2024-09-29 21:55

Probably videos of driving for FSD training.

drhappycat 2024-09-29 22:27

I use Tidal in my m3 and it doesn't buffer.

drhappycat 2024-09-29 22:28

I was listening to Meet the Press and after it ended something glitched and it started playing an episode from 2019. I listened to the whole thing it was surreal.

drhappycat 2024-09-29 22:31

Must suck to have such impressive hearing. I listen to Tidal lossless at home through some nice open back cans and in the car in whatever form it uses and can't tell much of a difference.

Syn3rgetic 2024-09-29 22:37

I have like 240gb I’ll be good. But even then it’s never gone past like 20gb a month for me.

SnooSuggestions6006 2024-09-29 22:41

I've been using the YouTube podcast ingredients feature on my 2014 model S for the last week or so. Generally been working great, the only problem (it's happened twice for me) I was listening to a podcast and left the car and came back and it didn't keep track of where I was in the podcast. But I've been using it twice a weekday for 45 minutes each way and am extremely happy with it other than those two hiccups!

SemiAutomattik 2024-09-29 22:45

I believe it only works if your hotspot connects to the car before you put the car in drive or reverse.

nicebrah 2024-09-29 22:48

I wish you could download songs offline for Spotify. I'm tired of driving into an area with poor connectivity and not being able to play anything in Spotify. I'd rather use my onboard storage for music than for stupid games I never play.

MisterBumpingston 2024-09-29 23:18

Used to be a giant “Use Vehicle Account” but now it’s “Don’t have a Spotify account?” In tiny letters under the giant QR code.

MisterBumpingston 2024-09-29 23:18

Go to account and select “Don’t have an account?”

MisterBumpingston 2024-09-29 23:20

This is one of those features that Tesla does not promote at all in Australia and many owners are shocked when I let them know. It was easily worth it for Premium Connectivity alone.

fusionsofwonder 2024-09-30 01:13

Can Youtube Music do any streaming without premium connectivity?

Nilstgw 2024-09-30 01:26

Nope

Present-Ad-9598 2024-09-30 01:38

My car has free music streaming??

moa999 2024-09-30 01:50

Obviously You Cannot. I provided direct personal experience of Spotify in Australia. There is no free Spotify for all cars in Australia, and that has been the case for 12+ months. Which is very different to what the article claims for Europe. You only get access to a car-limited Spotify Premium account if you subscribe to the Premium Connectivity package. Otherwise if on the free connectivity you need to provide login details for your preferred music streaming service. Detailed on Teslas Australia connectivity page here https://www.tesla.com/en_au/support/connectivity If you play with the country logins you will see very similar pages for en_eu and en_gb for example

nukequazar 2024-09-30 02:14

So that’s actually no

jbdeen 2024-09-30 02:29

Where’s that SiriusXM ![gif](giphy|mWNPTJ1zx6Aj5a7CVx)

wnstnchng 2024-09-30 03:56

Is this for mobile hotspot? How do you have 240GB cap?

SolenoidSoldier 2024-09-30 04:05

Correct, the trick I found to do was to toggle it for your home wifi that the car connects to.

jedi2155 2024-09-30 04:18

This, 10 gb/day easy doing this on HW4.

jedi2155 2024-09-30 04:22

This, I canceled my spotify account, and switched to Tidal once Tesla provided that option. I don't want Tesla to pay for a premium spotify.

jedi2155 2024-09-30 04:23

I switched to Tidal for audio quality too, and been enjoying it, but I do miss a lot of the UI perks of Spotify which was much better. I never used spotify for podcasts though, not compared to TuneIn or YouTube at least. Recently got an Audible subscription so don't really need any of them other than whats already available.

Syn3rgetic 2024-09-30 04:39

Tbh not really sure. I paid for 60gb a month but they kept adding more for free every few months. I pay about $65 + tax every month.

[deleted] 2024-09-30 05:03

You can do that, but the car takes few minutes before it connects to the Wi-Fi, so you have to make sure you are connected before start driving, otherwise no wifi until you are able to put it in park.

[deleted] 2024-09-30 06:25

Nicnl 2024-09-30 09:37

How would you translate "oui" from French to English?

Syn3rgetic 2024-09-30 09:55

I see. I have premium connectivity. i assumed it only used data when listening to music or streaming videos and navigating. i didnt know it phoned home that much.

stinkybumbum 2024-09-30 11:54

I have a model 3 and get a free sub to Spotify through Premium Connectivity. UK here

VenConmigo 2024-09-30 12:16

Disappointing. Actually enjoy the included music streaming app.

Da_WooDr 2024-09-30 12:38

This is what I am interested in.

Dr_Pippin 2024-09-30 13:59

The only errors I get are connectivity errors when first getting into my car in my garage where WiFi is really poor and cell service is really poor. And once it has connectivity issue, it won't try and re-connect again on that drive, so I have to pull up the full screen YouTube Music page and select my playlist again. Are those the errors you're referring to?

Muffstic 2024-09-30 14:33

Yes but I have great Wi-Fi coverage in my garage. It also doesn't do that on streaming so why does YouTube music?

Dr_Pippin 2024-09-30 14:58

I have no idea, but it's really annoying. And I don't get why it doesn't have a "retry connection after X amount of time" feature. Why just fail once and be done?

DaSandman78 2024-09-30 15:18

Wee 🤣

CyberInferno 2024-09-30 15:57

So you enable it for both home wifi and mobile hotspot, and that works?

SolenoidSoldier 2024-09-30 16:31

Yes, that solves the problem of wifi shutting off when you put it in drive, but I use the Tasker app to turn on my mobile hotspot whenever I connect to the car via Bluetooth. It doesn't work flawlessly every time, but it does the job.

Felixkruemel 2024-09-30 16:39

You might want to switch to a different provider then. :)

CyberInferno 2024-09-30 16:41

I've got Tasker to do the same. But I hate having to turn on wifi every time I back up. I'll change that setting on my home wifi as well. Thanks for the tip!

powaking 2024-09-30 23:55

I just received 2024.32.6 and one of the updates from 2024.32.4.1 mentions Streaming is being replaced by LiveOne which is Slackers new name. https://preview.redd.it/z0u6afkob1sd1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d3d4a59fcca8efd9ca9b26b88d3d88c9989fba72

MisterBumpingston 2024-10-01 02:10

Nooooo! Guess I’ll subscribe only for road trips.

[deleted] 2024-10-01 02:12

Just got the email in Australia. Tesla is ending the free Premium Spotify car account that comes with the premium connectivity subscription on 1st December 2024.

InertiaCreeping 2024-10-01 02:54

Just got this email 5 minutes ago: Update to Your Premium Connectivity --- Starting 1 December 2024, the Spotify Premium vehicle account will no longer be included with your Premium Connectivity subscription. Log in with your personal Spotify account or continue accessing the vehicle account by updating the account information with your personal email. Retaining the vehicle Spotify account requires the 2024.32.4 software update.* To update your Spotify account information: 1. Open the Spotify app from the bottom bar of your vehicle screen 1. Tap on the Account tab 1. Scan the QR code to log in or update the vehicle account information. As always, you can manage or cancel your Premium Connectivity subscription in the Tesla app.

Useful-Future-9680 2024-10-01 02:56

I got the email too. She goooone. Fortunately I only use YT music since the update.

[deleted] 2024-10-01 07:27

That's my one reason to keep premium connectivity gone!

SnorfOfWallStreet 2024-10-01 14:15

lol that was the part I said you couldn’t read. Free isn’t free if you need to have premium connection.

[deleted] 2024-10-01 17:11

Yes they just announced the removal of the streaming service that came with Premium Connectivity in North America. This happened almost at the same time they moved from Slacker to LiveOne. This benefit will be canceled after December 1, 2024. After that, if you want to listen to the LiveOne curated radio, you have to sign up for your own subscription for it just like Spotify etc. Essentially, it is now just an app that you can either use or toggle it off. My guess is that nobody really was using that so they took it away

TheOtherPete 2024-10-01 17:29

Actual Email From Tesla (US Customer); Subject: Update to Your Premium Connectivity **Your LiveOne Account Is Changing** >Starting December 1, 2024, your LiveOne powered by Slacker Radio account will no longer be included with your Premium Connectivity subscription. If you’d like to listen to LiveOne’s curated stations in your Tesla and on your other devices beyond this date, you can subscribe by following the next steps: 1. Open the LiveOne app, previously the Streaming app, from the bottom bar (requires software version 2024.32.4 or later) 2. Tap on the Account tab 3. Scan the QR code and update the account information Your Premium Connectivity subscription allows you to stream music, podcasts and audiobooks from your favorite media apps. Tap the icon of your preferred app on your vehicle’s touchscreen and log in to your account.

Glad_Departure_4598 2024-10-01 18:54

The native streaming apps on Teslas work directly at around 96-124kbps mp3 or aac. They are intentionally degraded to save Tesla data costs. The source file is 1411kbps if not higher. Why make something perceptibly worse if there is no reason to.

fluxxis 2024-10-01 20:03

You've won the lottery one out of a million ears if you can tell the difference between Spotify on High Quality and Loseless sitting in a Prius or a Tesla.

moa999 2024-10-01 20:05

And why do you think I used apostrophes around the word 'free' in my post?

Glad_Departure_4598 2024-10-01 21:50

It’s not even the level of Spotify High Quality (320kbps). Teslas have fantastic stereo systems with no decent way to stream lossless or high res (whatever you think of their importance) to them. That’s not something I can live with.

Glad_Departure_4598 2024-10-01 21:51

Why are you and others defending what is, for no good reason, a worse outcome? At very best it’s technically worse but perceptibly identical (I disagree with that).

Sara848 2024-10-01 23:25

So do we need two subscriptions now?

ihdieselman 2024-10-02 01:44

If they stop the music I stop premium connectivity. I don't need the radio anyway.

TheOtherPete 2024-10-02 01:59

Yep, if you want to continue to use Slacker There is a free version of Slacker (LiveOne) but it is definitely worse than what we had with the Tesla account.

Funny, I’ve never even opened the Spotify app. Not in my Model 3, nor on my iPhone. I didn’t even know it was a „premium“ account. I either listen to a podcast via Apple Music or I listen to a DAB channel (when it works…). It has news and background information during the day and classical music at night. And no ads.

So many Tesla apologists here.. Just because you don't use a function, it's not a good thing that features get removed, without any say. Personality I use the Spotify car account a lot, and this was one of the reasons I bought the Tesla in the first place. Now I have to spend €10 a month extra for another subscription... Sign..

Have received an email that Spotify Premium will no longer be included from December 1st. It’s a crime really. The premium connectivity costs the same but we are losing out on features. This is not ok. I will be unsubscribing for sure. (Norway)

Logitech4873 2024-10-02 07:51

Yes it did. I've been using the Spotify premium account that came with my Tesla for 3 years now.

Just got the email. EU based. Confirmed after 01. Dec no more free Spotify. This is a douche move from Tesla. Especially since they aren’t lowering the subscription a couple $$. Going forward I hope there’ll be some kind of law/regulation that lets us choose our provider (eSim) for the car connectivity.

I’ve been experiencing a bit of a connectivity issue with the music service Tesla was offering. Sometimes, I get a message saying there’s no connection, but it’s been happening with both the music service and the original Tesla music service. I think it might be a cellular problem on my end, rather than an issue with the music app itself.

Revolutionary-Fact73 2024-10-02 10:50

Unfortunately, it’s not possible without premium connectivity. It’s like your cellular connection that lets you stream to the car.

AllCommiesRFascists 2024-10-03 01:50

What provider doesn’t throttle after a certain amount of usage

AllCommiesRFascists 2024-10-03 02:14

Capitalism and enshittification is when you don’t get free stuff anymore 😢

[deleted] 2024-10-06 02:29

Man what is even the point of the premium connectivity now? This is fr enshiitification

SuperMario630 2024-10-06 03:29

Do you just listen to the radio and music on a usb drive?

ChemistStrange6801 2024-10-06 03:31

No mainly apple music and Audible I just didn't know about the app that was called Streaming that was free.

ReliefOne4665 2024-10-06 21:26

Are you in the U.S.?

Logitech4873 2024-10-06 23:17

No

ReliefOne4665 2024-10-07 00:46

Exactly, your feature is unavailable in the U.S. where I am.

Frozencold19 2024-10-08 14:39

nope, was super excited to get the update, and then my premium connectivity trial ended the next week, lol Also sucks because the cameras on my car didnt finish calibrating until I was 3/4 weeks the way through my FSD trial too, contacted tesla to try and get another month to test out FSD and they said no.

No_Juggernaut4097 2024-10-21 15:36

Yes, with software update 2021.24 and later, you can now choose to share your phone's data connection with your Tesla. It'll get you access to most of the features included with premium connectivity such as music streaming, internet browsing and you'll be able to use all of them while driving. However there are two features that aren't available without Tesla's premium connectivity, even if you're using your phone as a hotspot. They include the live traffic visualization and the satellite imagery in maps.

Imageman2020 2024-10-29 02:59

WTF is my payment for premium connectivity for if they take away the music streaming? Traffic? What an incredible ripoff. They "allow" me to hook up to my streaming services that I have to pay for separately? Gee thanks Elon! I am paying to have access to other paid services. I am furious that I am losing this streaming service. I use it constantly (play steely dan, play Bruce springsteen etc). Is there any alternative?

Imageman2020 2024-10-29 03:01

It isn't free. I pay for premium!

Most-War3390 2024-11-29 20:27

I thought they were just ending ad free music meaning the streaming service will now have small audio ads.
