Exactly-my father went out and was concerned with the “not enough car lengths in front of him”. The Tesla agent suggested “Sloth or Chill” mode. Will see how that works!

There’s a setting in your autopilot profile about number of car lengths.

While i do enjoy the calmness of sloth/chill, im not fond of how it camps behind slow moving vehicles going 10 under the speed limit :(

OP is talking specifically about FSD and not AP.

I typically have mine in standard/hurry and I agree, I wish it did not follow as closely as it does.

Use the turn signal to change lanes to pass them

WAIT THATS A THING???

My only complaint with it. I’m in Mad Max mode for FSD. I’ll use my blinker to switch lanes until they figure out a way to leave proper distance..

Yes it is! Not even just on the highway, in the city you can use it to make FSD take the next turn in that direction

Omg, that is awesome, I hope they have that feature on the 2026 MY my parents bought as 80 something year olds! I will be training them but need tips ahead of time.

Yes, you can click down the turn stalk and force it to change lanes.

Sloth or chill won’t do anything to change following distance, only max speed. If the cars ahead are going that same speed, it can and will still follow too closely.

There are no 'Follow Distance' setting for FSD. It knows the safe distance it needs. You can still try changing to a slower speed profile...

And in AP you just hit the button on the steering wheel to set follow length as desired, no need to dig into the settings menu!

Yes if running FSD.

This is handy, as sometimes, I want the car to do what I want instead of what navigation's route. I put on the turn signal to go a different way, the car makes the turn and reroutes. Really nice to be able to override the route mapping manually.

I think the issue is the car is programmed for the safe distance it needs. If I need to take over, my reaction time is slower than the computer. I need more distance as the "supervisor".

Fair enough, but FSD's behavior and awereness in traffic is next to perfect. Much safer than 99% of human drivers.

What is your relative speed set up? I always use plus or -5 mph and it works just fine.

99.999% tbh.

But it does stuff which cause road rage in human drivers too. . . Like in 5pm rush hour traffic, when the car needs to take an off ramp to change to another highway, there's a 1 mile line of cars, FSD drives in the #2 lane and cuts into the 1 mile long line 200 yards before the off ramp. I'm just waiting for someone to take a shot at me. I need one of those bumper stickers which says, "I'm sorry but the car is driving itself."

They really need a follow distance option for FSD

Is there any way to make it go straight when it wants to turn?

I don’t think so without kicking it out of FSD

Yeah, that's what I do.
