A couple of thoughts on FSD

NurseDave8 | 2026-03-09 20:07 | 16 views

I very recently traded in my old MS for a new M3 and pay for the FSD as that's what solidified my choice minutes into the test drive. * I am much more relaxed now "driving" from place to place because I'm not making decisions or dealing with other drivers personally. Someone wants to squeeze in front of me, the car slows to give them space and things just continue rather than me watching, expecting, getting irritated, etc. There are many examples of this, and yes, if I were a better person maybe I could have learned to just go with the flow, but I'm old and grumpy. * I wonder about this transitional generation. Like my generation growing up without computers to what it is now vs the generation born into every memory lasting forever in cyberspace. I wonder if very soon, people just getting their license will remain inexperienced drivers because of more cars coming with self driving. This leading to issues when you need to actually take over in unsafe conditions. I figure the generation after them will grow up with car that don't even have steering wheels and thus it becomes a non-issue.

Even today, if you put any licensed driver, experienced or not, behind the wheel with FSD driving, the end result will be safer. FSD isn't distracted. It doesn't speed excessively. No ego. No road rage. Any accidents would be minor fender benders and no big crashes. Pedestrians and cyclists would be perfectly safe. Most of all: it's only gonna get better, which is not the direction human drivers are going.

NurseDave8 2026-03-09 20:41

My thought being is there are currently times when FSD won't work such as severe weather when you would want an experienced driver behind the wheel vs one who has been driven around 95% of the time.

HerValet 2026-03-09 20:49

I understand. Those corner cases exist today, but let's not forget that many drivers forego driving in those same weather conditions, or at night, or in big cities. But inevitably, drivers will come to rely more on the tech, same as people now rely on calculators because they can't do simply mental math anymore. Sad but true.

NurseDave8 2026-03-09 20:51

I suppose, to your original point, one might make the case that more lives saved by tech in a majority of driving would drastically off-set those lost by incompetents driving in the minorities of times.

HerValet 2026-03-09 21:00

In the extreme yes, but those incompetent drivers will not crash instantly if they choose to take over for 1 minute. If the car pulls over because of a sudden downpour, the inexperienced/scared driver might just wait for the weather to clear enough for FSD to resume.

I totally feel the same about being more relaxed while the car chauffeurs me around town. It's like magic and i feel like it eases a lot of daily stress.

DearPossession762 2026-03-10 00:01

Yup. Same here.

Ya I gladly pay the cost of FSD. The commute to and from work is annoying. It's 95% highway driving but there are chucks where it's heavy traffic and would be a lot of slow down/stop and go. The car doing all of the work is well worth it. The only thing I notice is one of the updates it seems to be a little more weird or cautious with road conditions. There's some very dark spots on the highway and there's another spot where there is a small gash and the car will move out of the way like it's a big pot hole. Never did that before. That said, that is a very minor complaint.

the vast majority of people dislike the self driving stuff (not in this forum, but even here its 50/50). I wouldnt worry about that being an issue

farmerMac 2026-03-10 00:29

What do you think of hte level of refinement between the S and the 3? Seems like it would be quite a jump down from the S's ride quality

NurseDave8 2026-03-10 00:46

Yes, I missed it immediately. But the S was 12 years old and a new one was out of my budget. But the tech that I got was quite a leap up from what I was working with. Easier getting into the 3 though.

Its gonna get better, and more expensive. Pricing outside a market that can afford it. The end goal is to be autonomous driving software. Look at the cybercab being released. We are absolutely entering a world where drivers will be much less equipped to drive themselves without software assistance. Its the same thing that happened with digital navigation. Most people can’t find anything in their own city without it. Just the price of innovation unfortunately

Litig8or53 2026-03-10 04:15

Based on nothing, Nostradamus.

Separate-Dig7170 2026-03-10 04:18

Which part?

Litig8or53 2026-03-10 04:19

It’s much more favorable than 50/50 among the posters who actually own a Tesla and actually use FSD. There is an extraordinarily high troll count in this and most other Tesla forums. Meanwhile, in North America, Tesla far outsells the “competition” combined.

MikeARadio 2026-03-10 04:20

I simply feel safer when the car is driving. When I take over, which is rare, just because I feel like it I don’t feel as confident. And I am a very good driver and I’ve been driving many many years with no wrecks that I’ve caused.

Scbypwr 2026-03-10 08:52

Doesn’t speed excessively? https://preview.redd.it/vqd1i2ckl6og1.jpeg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4a48cfb09553b136fa5a807df64e4ddc62e34b92 \+22 is reckless! It’s not the profiles, standard will easily do +18! FSD is fantastic till it get you a summons or jail time for reckless! Roads in Va are heavily enforced! FSD is a fucking nightmare in these conditions and the profiles’ speed control is too erratic to make any sense! I am not using chill or sloth!

Narcah 2026-03-10 09:20

My grandkids won’t know how to drive well.

HerValet 2026-03-10 10:07

I get your point, but FSD is never reckless. It goes along with traffic and is always hyper aware of its surroundings. Do I wish for more granular speed control? Yes. But until then, FSD still never trades speed for safety.

LiveLikeDying 2026-03-10 15:19

Over the weekend I could have gotten the same shot, however the 50mph was incorrectly showing. I had passed a 70 and two 75 mph signs. FSD was also doing 77. It bothered me it was showing 50 in a 75, but I wasn’t concerned about +2.

Justice4All211 2026-03-11 01:22

Don’t you guys find that sometimes FSD gets too close to the car in front of you? Sometimes I feel like if they brake I won’t have time to react or neither will FSD

NurseDave8 2026-03-11 01:29

Not for me. I doesn’t get as close as I would personally and can react faster than I can.

yrg68556 2026-03-11 14:09

Yes! I was just talking to my partner about this, but specifically when stopping at a stop light. It leaves maybe 2 feet between us and the car in front, and I would feel more comfortable if it would leave more room in the event we get rear ended. Wish there was a way to change this

NurseDave8 2026-03-12 02:35

I should have mentioned the part I’m likely to miss the most in the future is the cargo space. We could haul a 8’ Christmas tree with the back shut and rental tools from Home Depot. When we needed to take something larger we would always take my S instead of my wife’s Y.
