Delivery Day did not go as planned

thatonedude115739 | 2026-03-08 00:50 | 63 views

Has anyone had a delivery day issue like this with Tesla? Curious if this is common or if we just had bad luck. If you saw my last post, you know I was really excited to become a first-time Tesla owner. Our delivery experience ended up being a little unusual, so I wanted to see if anyone else has had something similar happen. We went in for our delivery appointment, saw the car, set everything up, and accepted delivery in the app. While the advisor was walking us through the features, the car kept showing an alert that the frunk was open. They tried closing it and troubleshooting it, but the alert stayed on. They mentioned it could be a sensor issue and asked if they could keep the car over the weekend so the service team could look at it Monday. They provided another vehicle for us to use in the meantime. Later we found out it had been set up as a demo vehicle with a timed session. We were out running errands and stopped at Costco, and when we came back out the session had ended and we couldn’t access the car. We ended up being locked out for about an hour while trying to get in contact with support and the service center. During that time my husband went back inside Costco to return all of our groceries since we didn’t know how long it would take to regain access to the vehicle. Eventually someone from the service center was able to extend the demo session so we could get back in and head home. I understand that unexpected situations can happen, but as a new owner I’m curious if others have had similar delivery or demo vehicle experiences. Also wondering if there’s anything specific I should ask the service team to check when we go back Monday.

Also why is the sensory issue something they would not check as part of pre-delivery inspection? When I brought this up, the sales advisor mentioned that it happened after we accepted delivery on the app.

Possible-Mountain698 2026-03-08 00:58

there are checklists available for you to review online. tesla is known for minimal support and that cuts both ways - easier buying experience and minimal assistance post purchase.

BlueBeacon887 2026-03-08 00:58

Apologies for the poor experience! If they can’t fix the car’s issues within the weekend I would reject the delivery. You don’t want a brand new car with issues day one.

Possible-Mountain698 2026-03-08 01:00

because this is the musk model of business. minimal QA and support.

DueOne1223 2026-03-08 01:02

Should be no problems ... Happens ..yep Tesla experience is very different to others. They will sort it out. Untill then you have a loaner with free supercharging to use.. pain in the back the back that they set it up as a demo and not loaner .. Get the settings set up with your account like seat settings .. netflix accounts etc and then when you jump back into your car all those settings will transfer over too ..

thatonedude115739 2026-03-08 01:08

Is that possible? Even though we’ve accepted delivery in the app itself? We did not drive off the lot with the car though.

thatonedude115739 2026-03-08 01:09

Also are there any freebies we can ask for due to the experience we’ve had?

abgtw 2026-03-08 01:14

I might have just now failed. Like all electronic parts, they tend to fail right away or last forever!

abgtw 2026-03-08 01:14

Sure you can ask. But I wouldn't expect much!

spicyb12 2026-03-08 01:14

Did you sign the finance docs or pay for it? If so, that has the vin and it’s yours. I’m sure they’ll get it sorted. For the loaner - can you ask for the card?

tigole 2026-03-08 01:19

All the loaners are set up with time limits. The only bad thing was that they configured the end time wrong for you.

thatonedude115739 2026-03-08 01:22

Agreed, but still an oversight on the dealership

thatonedude115739 2026-03-08 01:22

True, bad luck on our end I guess.

DarthPandora 2026-03-08 01:23

Welcome to Tesla! Where you will get shitty quality control, shitty customer service, but a kick ass car 😂

Boippop 2026-03-08 01:44

I posted about this. Tesla is selling demos or showrooms as new IF unregistered. I’m sorry but if it’s sat in the showroom for 2 months and been sat in / played with by potential customers for that length of time it’s not new. I ordered a new AWD 3 and was matched in 2 weeks; the delivery advisor in his discussion to me said it had been in the showroom in Tottenham which rang alarm bells…. LONG story short; I cancelled and re ordered. I saw the car the next day back on inventory as new

thatonedude115739 2026-03-08 01:45

Ours had the plastic on everything and less than 10 miles so I’m not sure if that’s the case?

HFSGV 2026-03-08 01:48

I would have taken an Uber home with the groceries and told them to go pick up the demo. It's their problem.

thatonedude115739 2026-03-08 01:51

Sigh lol

thatonedude115739 2026-03-08 01:52

That’s a bummer

thatonedude115739 2026-03-08 02:01

Yeah we did sign everything and accepted delivery, it wasn’t until we were testing self drive that the sensory issues occurred

Many-Relief-2235 2026-03-08 02:07

As a former advisor, you can request a manager to talk about this. It is IN very extreme cases they will undue the delivery. (Or at least it was when I previously worked there)

thatonedude115739 2026-03-08 02:11

I don’t know if this would qualify as extreme unfortunately:/ Do you know what freebies Tesla advisors are allowed to offer for a crappy experience or is it close to none?

mother_fkn_crackk 2026-03-08 02:12

What would you be expecting anyways?

thatonedude115739 2026-03-08 02:12

Maybe a few months of free FSD

Many-Relief-2235 2026-03-08 02:16

Not a lot to offer. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

matt0947 2026-03-08 02:17

Yes, I got a free month of FSD for a complaint I had about delivery day

StartledPelican 2026-03-08 02:20

As far as I know, this isn't unique to Tesla. This is how the law is written in the US. The exact details vary from state to state, but as long as a vehicle has never been registered to an individual, then it can still be classified as "new".

No_Extent_2352 2026-03-08 02:23

My car had an issue with one of the rear doors. Door would not close and kept opening. Took about 8 hours for them to fix it. They gave it back to me twice with the door still having issues. It took two more service appointment to finally fix it. They were very apologetic and paid for meals at local restaurants while I waited. No issues since that was resolved and I have absolutely no regret buying the car.

thatonedude115739 2026-03-08 02:28

Who did you complain to?

SquirrelTechGuru 2026-03-08 02:29

Lucky you - I was told I could not open the door to look inside, let alone drive my $125k Model X upon pickup. It was take it or leave it. Such assholes.

goodvibezone 2026-03-08 02:52

When I picked mine up years ago they issued me the wrong one lol. They even manually checked the VIN. I only realized because it was fully charged but showing only like 260 miles which was an SR.

thatonedude115739 2026-03-08 02:54

Omgggggg lol what ended up happening then?

thatonedude115739 2026-03-08 02:55

Omg what’d you end up doing?

goodvibezone 2026-03-08 03:06

My actual car was there, but clearly not prepped. They do rushed it and there was a bunch of like sticky plastic marks all over the rear seats. I made them fix it while I waited. Twice.

rattler843 2026-03-08 03:21

This is how most car sales work though. Any other place you buy a car, it’s been on the lot and most likely driven by other prospective buyers. Maybe not as common for Teslas but it’s the industry norm

motomn121 2026-03-08 03:24

That's not unique to Tesla. Legacy dealerships do this regularly, oftentimes the manager or principal will use a vehicle as a demo for months and put thousands of miles on it, then sell it as a new car. A new car is one that has not been sold at retail to an individual. At least Tesla applies a discount for demo and showroom vehicles sold as new - legacy dealers oftentimes still sell at or above MSRP.

BadMotherThukker 2026-03-08 03:24

That sucks. At least it's just a switch or sensor and not something crucial to the car's performance down the road. I would let them fix it and enjoy the loaner in the meantime.

thatonedude115739 2026-03-08 03:32

True! It could have been worse forsure

thatonedude115739 2026-03-08 03:32

Omgggg but yay glad you have no regrets!

vulcan_on_earth 2026-03-08 03:51

Begs the question - why the delivery process does not include a 30 minute test drive (configure it as a demo vehicle) prior to official hand over. I bought my MYLR HW4 used from the first owner who let me drive it around for 30 minutes to check everything out before agreeing to buy. Knock on wood … all is well.

Many-Relief-2235 2026-03-08 03:56

If they do the process well, they test everything, do a view of the entire car, and also drive it around the site.  That’s what I used to do before I’d even deliver a car. Never had anyone undue a delivery from me. Or reject the car. I wouldn’t allow it to reach the point prior

Possible-Mountain698 2026-03-08 04:05

Tesla has offloaded QA to the end user because the best process is no process.

HAHHAHAAHA love that

matt0947 2026-03-08 04:09

Hopefully you can milk em for something, your situation is way worse than mine plus we pay a lot of money for these cars. Not saying we’re entitled to anything but common courtesy from them ya know haha

thatonedude115739 2026-03-08 04:11

Yeah seems like a miss on the inspection, even though we keep being told the sensor went out after we clicked “accept delivery” which doesn’t make sense lol

redvoo 2026-03-08 05:13

They really ought to call it Pickup Day. Amazon delivers. DoorDash delivers. UPS delivers. Tesla does not.

_______o-o_______ 2026-03-08 08:25

Funny how they did that autonomous delivery one time in Texas, just to say they did, and then haven't done it since (to my knowledge). That said, I did have my vehicle delivered to me, but it was an underwhelming experience, arrived at nearly midnight after waiting all day, and the car was dirty, with paint defects.

blacktik 2026-03-08 10:25

That sensor issue is so common. I had after 2 months of ownership, they replaced the sensor in 15 minutes. But the issue happened on weekend and not able to use the car until the mobile service appointment which they arranged on Tuesday.

Own_Illustrator7651 2026-03-08 15:14

My delivery day in Savannah, GA was at an old “other” dealership repurposed to Tesla. No way to inspect the car under cover and it was pouring rain. The delivery person held an umbrella for me. People were nice, facility sucked. How can you assess the paint in the pouring rain? check out the inside without getting muck all in the car? Place is WAY too small…the entire lot is crammed full of new cars awaiting delivery. Almost no customer parking. Ridiculous AND it is 4 hours away from me in SC (where they have no dealerships due to some state law). Won’t even consider going back there if the car needs anything.

no_baseball1919 2026-03-08 15:59

Damn that would have been instant no from me dawg no matter how excited I was

thatonedude115739 2026-03-08 16:14

Ah okay - did you experience any issues after they replaced the sensor or has it been fine since?

thatonedude115739 2026-03-08 18:04

Also I just remembered the advisor helping us in store said “this is only my 2nd time seeing this issue since I’ve been here for 8 years” which is so interesting because I’m seeing online everywhere that this is a common Tesla issue. Something isn’t adding up lol

blacktik 2026-03-08 18:14

All good so far. It's been one week after replacement.

AgonizingFury 2026-03-09 06:23

Giving them the benefit of the doubt, I'm assuming they meant on a brand new vehicle (at delivery). Sales advisors generally don't see vehicles coming in for service.

Apprehensive_Vast941 2026-03-09 22:13

Check everything, including frunk and trunk. Check the trim inside and outside of the car for build quality

Ill-Fuel7721 2026-03-10 21:50

My service center is always so stingy with giving out a key card. They always act like it’s such a hassle to “go look” for one. Yet they can only give one tesla acct access to a loaner. So yes, give me a key card as the second driver
