My garage door remote mount because adhesive Velcro and Command Strips keep failing in high heat

pjax_ | 2026-03-07 04:47 | 18 views

I previously used adhesive Velcro to mount my garage door remote behind the center screen, but the strips consistently failed and peeled off in high summer heat. I designed this housing to allow for a secure mount using high-heat resistant adhesive. It's secure and rattle-free while still allowing it to be easily removed for battery changes. Have you tried high heat rated velcro?

pjax_ 2026-03-07 05:09

I tried! Couldn't find one. VHB automotive tape is the only one I found that would work for sure. What is everyone else using? I know that the standard wisdom is "Command Strips" but to me they only worked until the next summer.

Yeah that kept happening to me too in Texas. I ended up just clipping it below the steering wheel and that has worked out perfect. https://preview.redd.it/yixcbbjiakng1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f2d38781417f59d7c989a33205745da4dadaf381

Very cool of you to share the print file. Does the 3D printed abs / pla warp in the high heat?

pjax_ 2026-03-07 06:20

PLA will probably warp. I used PETG and it has been working great. ABS is the best but it's not necessary.

3M has «velcro» that has been used for years by toll road chip providers here in Norway. You glue these to your windshield. And they’re a bitch to peel off. https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/dual-lock-reclosable-fasteners-us/ Highly recommend. One strip can carry up to 5 kg.

Does that position work for you? I have to pull it off the Velcro or else it only works in very specific angles to the door. I'm thinking of mounting it up on the top left side instead

This position works for me. I have it like this for 5 years. Never had to take it off. Did you put an LED light bulb in your garage door motor? LED bulbs are known to mess with the signal. Check that first. If that's the problem then know that they sell bulbs that are supposed to not mess with the signal.

You can install the official home link kit yourself. I bought a used one off eBay for $100 and it only took me 30 minutes to install. Well worth it to have the garage door and community gate automatically open and close

thataintitchief 2026-03-07 16:28

How did you mount the mount?

pjax_ 2026-03-07 16:40

Automotive VHB tape

Sam’s Club Alien tape has held up well in Southern Nevada heat. It’s essentially a gummy double sided tape that can be removed when needed by pulling but holds very well for exactly this type of thing.

Capital-Control308 2026-03-07 18:58

ASA plastic is best for cars. I had PETG warp.

Came here just to say alien tape! Tricky part is battery replacement is a bit tricky, alien tape will release if you twist it, or just separate the remote still stuck in place.

I use Teslamate and Home Assistant for free for this.

If you have a friend that has a transponder like the 407 ETR you can order extra vecro sticky tabs.

The Homelink module is a highly underrated product. It opens my community gate and garage via gps basically flawlessly. It’s the nicest thing I never knew I wanted and one of the reason we have 2 model 3s now. My truck that cost twice as much has it built into the mirror it’s just not the same. Especially since it stays powered on when the truck is off.
