Alright give me some Tesla Education...

idontevenliftbrah | 2026-03-05 21:44 | 9 views

I've decided that I am almost certainly buying a used Tesla. For years I have been resistant to the idea, and for that reason I did not learn anything about them or pay much/any attention, but now I am here. This decision is related to the job that I do. Can you guys and gals give me a run down of what I need to know? I'd hate to buy one and then 2 months later, after I learn more about them, think "darn I should have bought one with XYZ instead of what I bought" Likely will by Model Y. Mayyybe Model 3 or X but 90% model Y. What do I need to know? Features, years, dates, FSD versions, I don't know what HW3 v HW4 is. Etc. I wish I knew as much about teslas as I do about audis.

You best bet it is a 2024 Model Y Premium Rear Wheel Drive. Some later 2023's are okay but if you stay with a 2024 you are safe. FSD is awesome on 2024 and later. It does cost a hundred a month but you can turn it off and on when you need it, on a monthly basis. I love it.

I need AWD where I live. Is it possible to find a 24 with permanent FSD? Or what year did that stop becoming an option?

You need to make sure that whatever Tesla you buy is HW4. I highly suggest the Model Y AWD near 2023 and above. I also hope that you have the ability to install a 240 volt AC charger at home. Lastly, if you are buying the car from someone besides Tesla then before you make the deal, get the car checked out by a Tesla service Center by paying the $300 or $400 fee for a full inspection. Make sure that the test all of the cameras and sensors for physical damage such as scratches on the glass. I would also suggest that you stay away from the 20-in wheel and stick to the 19" for your more comfortable ride, longer life on the tires and save money in the long run.

Depending on your use case, I'd suggest the Model Y as the best choice for almost everyone. Model 3 is slightly more efficient and can go a bit farther on the highway between charges but is obviously smaller on the inside and lower to the ground. It is more fun to drive though, in my opinion. Model X has the cool factor and is the most spacious but also more risky to buy used due to its complexity (air suspension, falcon wing doors). Assuming you go with the Model Y, you will want to make sure you get one with the AMD infotainment processor (not Intel) and HW4 (not hw3) if you want it to be more "future proof." When shopping, most places will list the vin # and you can use that on Google to see when it was built and check to see if that's in the date ranges after AMD and HW4 were added. If you are checking the car out in person, you can also check by clicking the car icon in the bottom left corner of the infotainment screen, selecting software, and then selecting the blue text that says "additional vehicle information." Under the software tab is also where it will tell you if Full Self-driving is an included package or just temporarily subscribed. I bought a used 2021 Tesla Model Y Performance direct from Tesla ~2 years ago so I kind of learned it all as I went. Knowing what I know now, I actually wish I would of just stretched my budget ever so slightly and bought a new one so I wouldnt have missed out on all the new features. If you have more specific questions, feel free to reach out.

If I were you, I'd get a used model X. The falcon wing doors are amazing, and it has some awesome features like being able too open the passenger door from the screen - convenient chivalry! The falcon wing doors are more than just cool though, it's basically like a really cool minivan, amazing access and great if you have kids. Forget the HW4 thing. Anyone saying that probably just works for Tesla. Elon is under immense pressure to get FSD subscriptions up fast, so there's a lot of reason to imply it's the best thing about the cars. Realistically most Tesla drivers don't bother using it. FSD will never be a competitive autonomous driving feature on any current cars because they only have cameras and no radar. Competitors have radar etc, so they'll overtake fast as soon as their software improves.

Read one of the many buyers guides like those on Tesla-info that cover much more than a few points a few posters will put here. There are two education points for you, one is buying and owning an EV, any EV, the pros and cons, the second is a Tesla v any other EV. If you’re US based that’s easier than say in Europe as there’s much more competition.

Could you link me to what you're referring to? Thanks

100% agree. HW4 helps everyone just feel better for overpaying for their newest model and paying an extra $100. HW3 is just fine if you want to save on the massive depreciation.

PIRANHASQUIRREL 2026-03-06 21:40

Not to mention, lots of older s and x models DO have radar. So there's the potential for them to be actually better at FSD than HW4 in the future.

Tesla-info.com They have guides on each car, buying new and buying used teslas, stuff about EV charging. Im sure there are other places to read as well.

Hard disagree on HW4. I do not work for Elon. Dont even really like Elon, but damn HW4 is awesome. For me, I want FSD I can actually trust, not one that I kind-of mostly trust. HW3 is a fun toy, HW4 is a personal chauffeur. To each his own, but def not a case of "Anyone saying that probably just works for Tesla" - that's ridiculous

mbitbb 2026-03-07 01:24

Yes, def possible for 24. You need to look at the photos of the screen and the Software page and find one that says "full self driving -- package included". if it says "autopilot -- package included" or "full selve driving -- expires March 31, 2026" then its not purchased FSD

mbitbb 2026-03-07 01:32

u/idontevenliftbrah some other notes: \- manufacturer warranty until 50k miles, so if you get under that you're covered for a bit which is nice \- there's standard range and long range -- pick which matters to you \- autotempest is a great site to search en-mass. you just need to click through the photos and find one with paid FSD!

My car is HW4 and it IS awesome on FSD... When everything is working perfectly. If it rains or the cameras get dusty, or, after 6 months of owning it in a slightly humid climate when the condensation scum starts blocking the front facing camera. Then it's really hit and miss at best, and more realistically outright dangerous. Dancing indecisively between lanes on the highway, jamming the brakes on suddenly at 80kmh, panicking and handing over control suddenly because you turned into the sun. That's why both HW3 and HW4, everyone complains that the automatic wipers never work properly, while they do on a 20 year old vw. The wipers are also camera controlled. Maybe I'll take it in for servicing again in 3 weeks when the next appointment is open to get the headliner disassembled to clean the front camera assembly, but I'd have to take a day off work and probably do it again in a couple months - and let's be real, FSD just isn't worth that hassle. Regarding HW4 vs HW3 - yeah the faster processor is supposed to make it better, but it doesn't solve this basic functionality blocker. Just some basic radar sensors would though, which other brands have. I've never noticed enough of a difference in capability with the HW3 cars I've driven that make as much difference as this one which will never go away for either of them. Tbh, Advanced Autopilot on HW2 cars is pretty decent, gives you almost the capabilities of FSD (way better than autopilot, changes lanes and has Summon), but with no subscription AND those cars have radar sensors! So potentially actually more capable in future.
