Different accounts under 1 car?

BluejayAdmirable6889 | 2026-03-03 16:55 | 11 views

My gf and I will be buying a used model 3 Highland in the next week or so and I’m trying to figure out the best way to go about sharing accounts/profiles since we will be sharing 1 car 1. We create two separate Tesla accounts attached to our specific emails 2. We create a Tesla specific email for the car and add each others profiles (read someone else does this with their spouse) 3. We share 1 Tesla account like option #2 but with one of our personal emails attached If you share a car with your spouse, how do you guys go about it? Since we both will be getting in the car very frequently at the same time, how does it know who’s driving and who’s in the passenger seat We’re planning on purchasing FSD and premium connectivity, so does that affect the option I go with? My biggest concern is being logged out of the app for whatever reason and having to login using her email, and not having access to her email in that specific moment and vice versa….does Tesla send a verification code to the email the account is attached to if you attempt to login? (Is that why that guy uses a Tesla specific email for him and his partner lol?)

Use separate Tesla accounts. They all can link to one car. I have my own, my partners, and my roommate who occasionally wants to use it; all self-own Tesla accounts.

Do you pay for premium connectivity and does that transfer over accounts? FSD transfer over separate accounts ?

F1_rm 2026-03-03 17:05

Anyone who drives the car would have premium connectivity and FSD if you pay for them.

Everyone gets their own account. You can give any drive with an account access to your car. If you're friend wants to borrow your car you can grant them permission to drive and then just review the access later. You need separate accounts rather than sharing an account because all your settings are stored in the cloud and access based on the account you use to access the car. Your seat positions, Spotify login, YouTube login, etc. It even remembers what service you were listening to last time and starts back up right where you left off.

Thank you, hoped so

BitofaGreyArea 2026-03-03 17:11

Separate Tesla accounts. Link each to the same car. Then you can each use the car as needed. We had one Tesla (mine) for about a year, and then when my wife got a new car last year she also got a Tesla. This method lets both of us use either car easily.

BluejayAdmirable6889 2026-03-03 17:13

Thank you. I use Spotify and she uses Apple Music so this is great to know

BluejayAdmirable6889 2026-03-03 17:14

How does entry into the car work if you’re both getting in at the same time?

dantodd 2026-03-03 17:15

It's awesome. We have 2 Teslas and when I drive my wife's car Spotify starts up right where I left off in my car.

BitofaGreyArea 2026-03-03 17:16

It knows who's getting into the driver's side. Most of the time. Every once in a while it thinks I'm my wife and I have to switch profiles on the screen before I get trash-compacted into the steering wheel.

TowElectric 2026-03-03 17:16

You want separate accounts. Whoever is legally on the paperwork should be the primary one (this avoids headaches later) and then they can "assign driver" to the other person. Lots and lots and lots of reasons to do this and avoid the "shared email" issue.

TowElectric 2026-03-03 17:16

I think it's aware who is on the driver side.

TowElectric 2026-03-03 17:17

These are all tied to the car, not the person.

BluejayAdmirable6889 2026-03-03 17:19

This is awesome !!

BluejayAdmirable6889 2026-03-03 17:20

She’ll be on the paperwork so this is helpful to know. Would I just download the Tesla app and she’ll send me an invite as a driver or how does that work?

BluejayAdmirable6889 2026-03-03 17:21

Thank you !! Can’t wait for our Tesla

TowElectric 2026-03-03 17:23

make an account. It's open, people do it to buy a car or to use other chargers, etc. Once you have the account, it's not hard to invite someone as a driver.

BluejayAdmirable6889 2026-03-03 17:25

Tesla #2 incoming potentially next year We test drove a new 2025 or 2026 model 3 highland last week and fell in love with it, that’s the only reason we’re getting a 2024 refreshed model. I was thinking of buying a 2022-2023 model 3 since they’re so cheap with low mileage but she insisted we go for the newer models since she loved the newly added features

BluejayAdmirable6889 2026-03-03 17:26

Do we both have the same permissions on the vehicle?

dantodd 2026-03-03 17:34

We're likely going to upgrade the 2018 model 3 to as new performance next year. My wife really likes to track her car and the new performance is a huge upgrade for track use

stadce071012 2026-03-03 17:43

Whoever is the primary owner/purchaser will tie ownership of the car with their personal email and Tesla account. Do not attempt to create a separate email for the car. Any secondary driver(s) will create their own personal Tesla account that is not in any way associated with ownership. Primary will then share driving privileges from the main account tied to the ownership with any authorized person (This is done via a text/email). In the event any secondary driver is logged out of their personal account on the app, any 2FA requirements would be met via their email address not the owners. All your personal settings will follow you in any Tesla you have permission to drive.

BluejayAdmirable6889 2026-03-03 17:43

I’ll probably be going for a long range model because of the price but performance sounds insane!! 0-60 in under 3 seconds?!?!?

BluejayAdmirable6889 2026-03-03 17:45

So you recommend not having different Tesla accounts?

stadce071012 2026-03-03 17:56

That’s not at all what I said. Account #1 - Vehicle owner, using his/her name and personal email address. Account #2 - Secondary driver, using his/her name and personal email address. Think of Account #1 as the “admin”. They will share driving privileges with Account #2 or any other authorized users. Any warranty issues, service request, or future ownership transfer will be handled by Account #1.

rdubmu 2026-03-03 17:58

One account should be the primary account t

BluejayAdmirable6889 2026-03-03 18:00

Using just 1 account is okay?

BluejayAdmirable6889 2026-03-03 18:01

Sorry for the confusion. I would be USER #2, so how limited are my functions?

SituationOk6016 2026-03-03 18:10

But with each their own account, can they both pay for charging?

SituationOk6016 2026-03-03 18:12

The only thing I’ve found is different on my spouse’s account versus mine is that I cannot pay for charging at a supercharger and I cannot upgrade to FSD or premium connectivity or any other subscription.

stadce071012 2026-03-03 18:14

You can basically do anything with the car except administrative stuff like managing payment methods or authorizing and revoking driving privileges for other people. All basic vehicle functions are accessible. FSD, Premium Connectivity, etc is available to anyone driving the car.

dantodd 2026-03-03 18:15

No. The owner pays for charging at superchargers. It's really intended for multi-driver households. You can have a non-owner pay if you use a third party charger. ETA: this may well be different on the point if Dale chargers I have not used them so I am not familiar with how they work

ultimateaoe2 2026-03-03 18:38

Please use separate accounts as stated in my comment. No need to complicate it. Whoever will own the car as the primary will take ownership first with their account.

BluejayAdmirable6889 2026-03-03 18:39

Do you switch profiles when trying to supercharge then?

BluejayAdmirable6889 2026-03-03 18:39

App works the same as well?

BluejayAdmirable6889 2026-03-03 18:40

Thank you !

SituationOk6016 2026-03-03 18:40

No, but regardless If the profile is mine or my spouse’s(owner) it will not give me the opportunity to charge through the app

stadce071012 2026-03-03 18:41

Yes, functionality is exactly the same.

BluejayAdmirable6889 2026-03-03 18:44

Thank you!

BluejayAdmirable6889 2026-03-03 18:44

Wait sorry if this sounds ignorant, but how do you go about supercharging in this case?

SituationOk6016 2026-03-03 18:45

Only my husband (owner on account) can supercharge

destynx 2026-03-03 18:53

More specifically, it recognizes the bluetooth key registered on your phone with your Tesla account. So as long as you have your phone (or Apple Watch) on you when getting in through the drivers side, it will configure your seating position and infotainment settings. This feature alone makes the Tesla amazing when multiple people use it.

TowElectric 2026-03-03 19:04

Frankly, a single car only supports one card. There is no way to split between two cards, you'll have to figure out how that works. The car should work on any account on superchargers, but they're going to charge the primary card on file and there is no alternative.

BluejayAdmirable6889 2026-03-03 19:16

Wow that is so cool

BluejayAdmirable6889 2026-03-03 19:17

Good to know. Do you think if I add a profile under the ADMIN account, that account will be able to supercharge?

OldDevelopment5105 2026-03-03 19:30

In the profile screen in the car you can also set a primary profile so for example if my wife and I are ever in the car together I would be the one driving so I can make my profile as the primary so it would default to mine if we are both in the car. But if she was driving for some reason you just click the profile icon at the top of the screen and select her name and it would switch to her.

FLawless______ 2026-03-03 21:01

Am against buying a car with partner unless you're married, it's just going to be a big financial headache if you break up. If you get the car in 1 name or the other, that is the much wiser decision. Do not risk ruining your own credit, or ruining hers. As for the accounts; 2 accounts, owner is primary and you can make the other a driver.

steph_ish 2026-03-03 21:39

My husband and I have two separate Tesla accounts. He is registered as the owner of our Tesla, and I'm a driver. We both use superchargers without the other present, and I have never had an issue charging even though I am not listed as the owner. Anyone with access to drive a Tesla should be able to take that car to a supercharger. Our car has FSD and premium connectivity, so we both have access to it when we are driving. The only thing I have noticed that he can do that I can't, is activate or deactivate the "PIN to drive" feature. There may be other things, but if so we aren't affected by it to my knowledge.

kevtke194 2026-03-04 00:56

You each get your own accounts & profiles.
