People in NYC think any Tesla they see at a red light is an Uber and attempt to break in

Not sure - They think i'm stopping for them. I've also had it happen in narrow streets with someone stopped in front of me, forcing me to stop as well. Then a pedestrian thinks i'm here for them and attempts to open my door. People have no awareness - It's mad.

I think people on this subreddit would be surprised to learn that most people in the general public cannot tell between a Model 3, Y, S, or X

I drive in the city every single day for 9 years now and this has never happened to me. 

This doesn’t make sense to me , like are people seriously just trying to get kidnapped ?? Everytime I use uber I never just randomly approach a car and open the door ??

This happened to me once. It was 4:00 in the morning, and a guy stumbled out of a bar and tried to get into my backseat. I rolled the window down just enough to yell “I’m not an uber!” And then he stumbled away and around the corner. I don’t think he’d even called a cab.

Whenever I had a work day in NYC, I would take a train in and then the subway to a couple blocks from the office. All to avoid driving and parking. It was rare that I would take a taxi due to the cost. Today, I avoid NYC altogether, and if I have no choice, the company will be paying for taxis.

The older 3 and Y look the same from the front and back. And sometimes I find myself second guessing the side view. I’m glad the latest design is different.

The Tesla taxis are yellow, though. It's pretty easy to distinguish from a normal Tesla.

I have a black model Y, by far the most common nyc tlc tesla, and this has never happened to me. Who gets into an uber at a red light without checking the app for car details? Sus story

I have a model 3, and it happened to me twice in one day in Chicago. The intruders were mad at me that I wasn’t their ride.

Set your horn sound to "THIS IS NOT A TAXI" and when someone attempts to open your door, you honk the horn.

Yeah, another NYC Tesla owner here saying that this is not true. Maybe one time some drunk kid with an Tesla Uber the same color as yours made a mistake, but this is not a NYC thing that anyone needs to worry about.

Had this happen to me once in SoCal. Parked near a bar around closing time. A group of people start opening my rear doors and get confused about why there's a bunch of crap in the back seats of their Uber. Takes a minute, but it registers and the main person of their group apologized and seemed embarrassed for the both of us. It was definitely a bit surreal.

This happens to me in Philly all the time, I’ll be waiting to pick my husband up and randos will just try to climb in the back, and then when I watch them find their actual uber it’s not even a Tesla or even the same color.

That’s why in most cities taxies should be a particular color, yellow in nyc.

It's easy to tell them apart. Model Y has a ton of ugly gray plastic around the wheel arches and on the rear bumper. Model 3 has none of that.

Ha! Same thing happened to me twenty years ago! I owned a Caddy DTS in manhattan. Everyone constantly thought I was a limo/cab/TLC and often suddenly open door and jump in back seat. If it had been a Lincoln Towncar would have been way worse too

Yeah the white and those pictures make it almost disappear! It has always been a dislike of mine on the Y, but I assume it was part of making up the gap from the height difference between the 3 and Y.

When I was young, many moons ago, it was common for people to try get a ride somewhere by just jumping into the passenger seat of your car. It wasn't good times. I got in the habit of keeping a steel steering lock on my passenger seat. Because nothing says "Go the hell away" like a steel bar in hand.

Since when can you just get an Uber at a red light? Is that a new York thing? Do ubers work like taxis in New York?

The ideology in their mind likely is: this is a car stopped, that means it's stopped waiting for me. They have no awareness of the traffic signals or traffic ahead.
