People in NYC think any Tesla they see at a red light is an Uber and attempt to break in

MichaelRahmani | 2026-03-03 05:28 | 15 views

Tesla taxis have become so common in NYC that people are so certain any personal vehicle they see at a red light is an Uber, attempting to open my door at red lights and shout expletives at me when it doesn’t open. I had it happen three separate occasions now within the past month. Tonight this guy started knocking on my glass and I thought it was someone attempting to break in so accelerated at the red light. It is so obvious to know which car is a taxi with the tlc license plate. Yet these people think they have the right to break into people's personal property. I don't even have a Model Y which is the one commonly used for taxis.

That's actually horrifying...add it to the list of reasons I'll never live in NYC. I'm sorry you're having to deal with it.

MegaSwizzler 2026-03-03 05:47

Same lol, I live in LA which is pretty much a hard requirement to have a car, NY just seems like it would be better to take public transportation

alman12345 2026-03-03 05:49

Yeah, the metros bring their own set of horrors from what I've heard though lol

Antraxx310 2026-03-03 05:55

Yeah my conceal carry gonna make sure im safe in LA

Gedalya 2026-03-03 06:10

I’m confused, why are they trying to enter an uber at a red light? I’m in Manhattan/Brooklyn with my MY and this never happens to me.

Mastaking 2026-03-03 06:11

Every other car in the city is a Tesla. I don’t think they think you are a taxi but who knows. Never had this

MichaelRahmani 2026-03-03 06:12

Not sure - They think i'm stopping for them. I've also had it happen in narrow streets with someone stopped in front of me, forcing me to stop as well. Then a pedestrian thinks i'm here for them and attempts to open my door. People have no awareness - It's mad.

Omacrontron 2026-03-03 06:13

Wanna get threatened for no reason and have the constant fear of violence looming over you? Me neither, cab please lol.

hmspain 2026-03-03 06:25

Ah, that makes more sense. From the way it was written, it seemed like they were trying to rob OP. In all fairness, Teslas are quite popular in the Uber world and look very similar. The rider is supposed to check the license plate, but ....

PapaEchoLincoln 2026-03-03 07:31

I think people on this subreddit would be surprised to learn that most people in the general public cannot tell between a Model 3, Y, S, or X

sexaddic 2026-03-03 08:22

I drive in the city every single day for 9 years now and this has never happened to me. ![gif](giphy|gBpY4p7bbhsiI)

hchn27 2026-03-03 08:46

This doesn’t make sense to me , like are people seriously just trying to get kidnapped ?? Everytime I use uber I never just randomly approach a car and open the door ??

jrherita 2026-03-03 09:28

Does OP have any dashcam footage to prove this?

xeus24 2026-03-03 09:49

Who is the criminal in this story or did you misunderstand what’s happening here?

kevtke194 2026-03-03 10:04

![gif](giphy|KGSxFwJJHQPsKzzFba) I’m having a hard time believing this. Not once has this happened to me in NYC or any other major city.

2nd-Reddit-Account 2026-03-03 10:18

>Yet these people think they have the right to break into people's personal property. No they don’t. They’re confused (and possibly dumb) Thinking you’re the car they ordered is not attempted theft or carjacking lmao.

Puzzleheaded-Cup-854 2026-03-03 10:20

I have a MY in Manhattan UES for 2.5 years now and it's never happened to me.

craneguy 2026-03-03 10:21

You should probably stay on the farm where it's safe, Jethro.

VictrolaBK 2026-03-03 10:32

This happened to me once. It was 4:00 in the morning, and a guy stumbled out of a bar and tried to get into my backseat. I rolled the window down just enough to yell “I’m not an uber!” And then he stumbled away and around the corner. I don’t think he’d even called a cab.

PremiumUsername69420 2026-03-03 11:08

No, cause it’s fake.

CopperBlitter 2026-03-03 11:10

Whenever I had a work day in NYC, I would take a train in and then the subway to a couple blocks from the office. All to avoid driving and parking. It was rare that I would take a taxi due to the cost. Today, I avoid NYC altogether, and if I have no choice, the company will be paying for taxis.

Guszy 2026-03-03 11:19

Hell, I can only tell whether it's a model 3 or NOT a model 3. I don't know which ones are S, X, or Y.

RoughAmbitious9592 2026-03-03 12:00

Maybe they think is a taxi and not an uber. They are also dumb. Those are well identified. Definitely tourist.

fedup-withtrump 2026-03-03 12:00

No you didn’t and no it doesn’t happen all the time . This post is nonsense.

THATS_LEGIT_BRO 2026-03-03 12:31

The older 3 and Y look the same from the front and back. And sometimes I find myself second guessing the side view. I’m glad the latest design is different.

DillFunk1 2026-03-03 12:53

The Tesla taxis are yellow, though. It's pretty easy to distinguish from a normal Tesla.

pretzelgreg317 2026-03-03 12:54

I have a black model Y, by far the most common nyc tlc tesla, and this has never happened to me. Who gets into an uber at a red light without checking the app for car details? Sus story

pretzelgreg317 2026-03-03 12:57

Better yet dont visit at all.

Significant-Mail2275 2026-03-03 13:00

Unless you see a T at the beginning and C at the end of the plate do not approach my car.

Crap now I need to rewatch Silicon Valley.

Strange-Bake193 2026-03-03 13:17

I have a model 3, and it happened to me twice in one day in Chicago. The intruders were mad at me that I wasn’t their ride.

ConclusionFlat1843 2026-03-03 13:41

Set your horn sound to "THIS IS NOT A TAXI" and when someone attempts to open your door, you honk the horn.

BaxBaxPop 2026-03-03 13:44

Yeah, another NYC Tesla owner here saying that this is not true. Maybe one time some drunk kid with an Tesla Uber the same color as yours made a mistake, but this is not a NYC thing that anyone needs to worry about.

MichaelRahmani 2026-03-03 13:47

I have one of the incidents on video mate. https://www.imgur.com/a/CDHqm0K

godprobe 2026-03-03 14:01

Had this happen to me once in SoCal. Parked near a bar around closing time. A group of people start opening my rear doors and get confused about why there's a bunch of crap in the back seats of their Uber. Takes a minute, but it registers and the main person of their group apologized and seemed embarrassed for the both of us. It was definitely a bit surreal.

Moist_Lake_9392 2026-03-03 14:13

This happens to me in Philly all the time, I’ll be waiting to pick my husband up and randos will just try to climb in the back, and then when I watch them find their actual uber it’s not even a Tesla or even the same color.

MichaelRahmani 2026-03-03 14:18

Quick_Possibility_99 2026-03-03 14:29

That’s why in most cities taxies should be a particular color, yellow in nyc.

SblackIsBack 2026-03-03 15:12

It's easy to tell them apart. Model Y has a ton of ugly gray plastic around the wheel arches and on the rear bumper. Model 3 has none of that.

THATS_LEGIT_BRO 2026-03-03 15:44

I don't see the ugly gray plastic on the model y wheel arches. https://insideevs.com/reviews/743758/tesla-model-y-review-intro/

rtls 2026-03-03 16:08

Ha! Same thing happened to me twenty years ago! I owned a Caddy DTS in manhattan. Everyone constantly thought I was a limo/cab/TLC and often suddenly open door and jump in back seat. If it had been a Lincoln Towncar would have been way worse too

neos2000 2026-03-03 16:32

Any description of these people or pics videos?

kwright88 2026-03-03 17:46

I don’t see someone trying to ‘break in’.

kwright88 2026-03-03 17:47

You barely escaped with your life!

SblackIsBack 2026-03-03 17:56

Zoom in, it's just blending in with the shadow here. You can see it clearly on this page from the service manual, look at the blue Y in the video. https://service.tesla.com/docs/ModelY/ServiceManual/en-us/GUID-E9594680-EA4B-4815-A239-17167918BCA3.html

THATS_LEGIT_BRO 2026-03-03 17:58

Oooh. I thought it was just a large wheel well.

SblackIsBack 2026-03-03 18:01

Yeah the white and those pictures make it almost disappear! It has always been a dislike of mine on the Y, but I assume it was part of making up the gap from the height difference between the 3 and Y.

drnicko18 2026-03-03 20:26

is this some weird fanfic anti-tesla post?

Muhahahahaz 2026-03-03 21:30

That’s not a video mate

MichaelRahmani 2026-03-03 21:32

Gotchu den. Video both angles from last month one of the incidents https://imgur.com/a/zHZRWYn

MichaelRahmani 2026-03-03 21:33

No.

__Pendulum__ 2026-03-03 22:32

When I was young, many moons ago, it was common for people to try get a ride somewhere by just jumping into the passenger seat of your car. It wasn't good times. I got in the habit of keeping a steel steering lock on my passenger seat. Because nothing says "Go the hell away" like a steel bar in hand.

jtucker323 2026-03-04 00:04

Since when can you just get an Uber at a red light? Is that a new York thing? Do ubers work like taxis in New York?

MichaelRahmani 2026-03-04 02:41

The ideology in their mind likely is: this is a car stopped, that means it's stopped waiting for me. They have no awareness of the traffic signals or traffic ahead.

YardieRebel 2026-03-07 16:19

This story sounds like FAKE NEWS 🙄

MichaelRahmani 2026-03-07 16:50

It's a personal experience. It's not news or fake.
