Is it normal for diagnostics to cost this much, it is half of the bill.

Looks like a sensor failed. But half the bill is them trying to find the problem. Is this normal?

It is not uncommon for diagnostics to be billed for a full hour.

Pretty standard hourly rate for any automotive OEM dealership.

Is that really how Tesla service does it? What I've experienced in the past is that a shop will charge a diagnostic fee but if you go ahead with the repair, they only charge for the repair. And $350/hr is very high, IMO.

Yeah I am a little surprised since the estimate came in with the part they needed to replace. Normally they just fix the part and we pay for labor. Original estimate to replace the part was about $500.

To be fair, it's not $350/hr. It was 1.5 hours which is $235/hour.

I just had service on my car a few weeks ago. $260/hr for labor where I live.

Modern vehicle bumper R&I labor to change a sensor is easily in the 1hr+ range. It appears yours is an inner one (actually possibly two?) that failed, so it’s not easily accessible. If it was an outer one next to the tire it would probably be less but this is pretty typical. It’s not a rocket science job but if you’d rather find a body shop to do it, you might be able to pay lower body shop rates than mechanical rates to get it done. Paint/Body labor is generally less $ per hour than Mechanical. A quick call to a 3rd party Tesla certified body shop may save you some money. But don’t expect them to be held accountable if it turns out to be something else since they didn’t do the diagnosis. I think it’s worth a risk if you want to save a few $.

It’s pretty standard for it to be billed a hour at almost every shop I’ve ever used.

Yes this is normal. And you’re lucky they were able to reproduce the issue.

The computer notified the part that had to be replaced. Was in the error message.
