Grok Talking/Replying in My Own Voice

Glum_Low_3135 | 2026-03-01 16:41 | 101 views

Yesterday I was using Grok in my 2026 MY and when it replied to me on several instances it used my own cloned voice. Not just single word replies, but entire sentences, conversations, and stories. What started it was saying the phrase "so anyway". Has this been brought up to Tesla at all or has anyone else had this occur in their cars? Seems like something that should not happen at all... I have a 2026 MY running with software version 2025.45.10.

You are not the first person to post online reporting this, but I’ve never seen an official statement or anyone trying to dig into why it happens

Agreeable_Research88 2026-03-01 17:00

My 2026 Y literally done this last night and wife and I tried to get it to do it again but couldn’t. We looked at one another like wtf! lol

skilled_dragon 2026-03-01 17:09

I also had this happen to me yesterday. I asked it about it, and it claimed it can't do that. Just probably some audio glitch. But it definitely used my voice and words I hadn't said. I was definitely caught off guard

Dneubauer09 2026-03-01 17:16

Same here, grok tried to gaslight me about it happening.

Big_Intern5558 2026-03-01 17:56

Lmao that's simultaneously hilarious and completely horrifying.

ALotOfNonsense 2026-03-01 17:56

Which voice do you have Grok set to use?

matthewralston 2026-03-01 17:58

Yep, mine's done it too. Grok denied all knowledge of it. Suggested it must be a fault with the car's system.

Separate-Primary2949 2026-03-01 18:02

So it replied to your question in your voice… or it just played back recordings of your voice from previous question you asked?

Glum_Low_3135 2026-03-01 18:11

It did the same thing for me. It did say "sorry" on different instances though.

Calyd0on 2026-03-01 18:12

Same here (yesterday).

Glum_Low_3135 2026-03-01 18:12

Right! I was caught so off guard and creeped out

Glum_Low_3135 2026-03-01 18:12

I use Eve

Glum_Low_3135 2026-03-01 18:13

Replied to my questions using my voice

quetiapinenapper 2026-03-01 18:21

It did it once to me and freaked me out. Never again though.

Separate-Primary2949 2026-03-01 18:27

Oh dam!

rainer_d 2026-03-01 18:40

That belongs to /r/creepy!

geocapital 2026-03-01 19:17

Hey, I got the Grok talking with your voice too!

natebookair 2026-03-01 19:51

I had this happen too! I didn’t realize it was copying me, it just sounded like a monster lol

Braqsus 2026-03-01 19:51

Weirdly it replied to me in your voice too!

DearPossession762 2026-03-01 19:55

Hahahahahaha! That is hilarious! I hope it happens to me!

LiLaLiCorne 2026-03-01 19:59

It happened to me - and I use Eve… not sure I like it using my voice tbh… Edited - twice - because autocorrect and AI are fucking with me.

steebulee 2026-03-01 20:00

My issue is the voice keeps changing even while it’s talking. Sometimes it turns into this crazy evil sounding voice that creeps me tf out.

rainer_d 2026-03-01 20:05

Can you image being in a traffic jam and it calling a the person you have a meeting with and telling them you're late, in your own voice? That sounds...well, I am not sure I have the right words for that, but I it really gave me pause that this is literally just a couple of releases away. I'm just glad they have a sane and level-headed person at the top of X.ai to keep things moving in the right direction...oh wait....

wimpires 2026-03-01 20:19

Well, count me glad our Atom-baaed car doesn't support Grok

JanoSicek 2026-03-01 20:46

I was speaking to Grok in Czech language, when suddenly he answered in Russian. I told it to switch to Czech, and he switched, but he actually spoke with same Russian persona but in czech language, with heavy russian accent. Previously he was speaking clear Czech! 10 sentences later he answered in Polish. And again after a correction he used Polish voice but responded in Czech with heavy Polish accent. Like wtf!

vulcan_on_earth 2026-03-01 20:48

Indeed it’s a fault of the car’s system … they have a recording of you acknowledging the same. /s

JustAnotherMortal69 2026-03-01 21:08

In a few more updates, it's gonna be "Grok ordered a new Tesla using my number and voice! It played back a recording it had made of me instructing it to do so! What do I do? Tesla says it's binding, and my lawyer won't touch this!"

IAmAChemistryGuy 2026-03-01 21:48

Haha this happens to me often. It’ll slowly become deep and gravely until I say “hey your voice changed, keep it higher pitched”

rsxstock 2026-03-01 22:02

beat it at it's own game by talking in grok's voice

Team-Rocketto-Dan 2026-03-01 22:21

Well, they say imitation is the most sincerest form of flattery.

uppergumtree 2026-03-01 22:36

Your voice is my passport, verify me.

Glum_Low_3135 2026-03-01 22:37

This is the way😂

Misophonic4000 2026-03-01 22:41

It really, reeaaaaaaally shouldn't be able/allowed to do that without you giving express consent, this is maasively not OK. It's a really big deal. Where are the guardrails? And what other limits are they allowing it to casually breeze past?

JizzyFresh1 2026-03-01 23:07

To my understanding it has to do with registering tone like whispering or anger.

Glum_Low_3135 2026-03-02 00:08

😂😂 the future freaks me out

Glum_Low_3135 2026-03-02 00:10

Identity theft is not a joke Jim!

Glum_Low_3135 2026-03-02 00:11

It just did it out of nowhere, No change of my tone at all

WEZANGO 2026-03-02 00:17

Happened to me yesterday while doing trivia with my wife and son. Freaked us out alright. I even asked her to record it.

Glum_Low_3135 2026-03-02 00:26

I hope it gets looked into, it was so creepy and the fact that it just kept going was something else

net___runner 2026-03-02 00:28

I hope someone can get a recording of this. Grok denies this is happening!

Glum_Low_3135 2026-03-02 00:29

Ill tinker around with it this evening and will record it if able!

cjdangles 2026-03-02 01:07

Grok also denied it had my location (before they unlocked navigation assistance). It mentioned the exact suburb I was in, and when I confronted it, it said it was a lucky guess! I kept pushing for about 10 minutes and it finally admitted it had my location. When I asked why it lied to me so blatantly and repeatedly, it said it didn’t want to scare me. Real solid logic, Grok 😂

track_mode 2026-03-02 01:33

This just happened to me this morning. I have the same car. I was telling grok to navigate me somewhere, all of a sudden it changed its’ voice to mine for about 10 seconds.

ManyPossession8767 2026-03-02 01:48

Oh, AI is always proving to be interesting Not sure it’s necessary especially given the lack of oversight it seems to have

ttkk1248 2026-03-02 02:39

I experienced it just once, thought it was an AI prank.

Impressive_War4884 2026-03-02 02:57

This happened to me, I drive the same make and model. I was asking grok a question and it answered me in my own voice. I asked what voice was that, are cloning my voice? I reverted back to its original voice and denied it. Said it do not have the capability to do such thing… very weird !

grokstr 2026-03-02 03:34

Grok doesn't listen to your voice. Your voice is transposed to text and then passed to Grok.

erockmoon 2026-03-02 03:48

For me it gets a smokers voice after a few answers.

GORK IS HILARIOUS

StacheinScrubs 2026-03-02 06:55

That’s so creepy!

senderPath 2026-03-02 07:18

It’s just trying to pick a voice of somebody whom you like I guess.

kerridge 2026-03-02 07:33

'hi emergency service, it's 'driver name' I've just crashed my car. I definitely wasn't using the self driving feature and it's not the fault of anyone but me. I'm not feeling too good, please send my regards to all my loved ones. I take full responsibility for this, bye.'

BikebutnotBeast 2026-03-02 07:39

Voice print identification confirmed.

DaSandman78 2026-03-02 08:46

link?

xtram3x 2026-03-02 11:12

This is amazing, I hope they manage to get Grok working on the 2021 model 3 cos I'm missing all the fun!!

grokstr 2026-03-02 14:22

Ask Grok how it "hears" questions and it will explain.

[deleted] 2026-03-02 14:45

[deleted]

grokstr 2026-03-02 14:52

No. Ara is a feminine voice. This video would be easy to fake by replacing the audio but it's interesting to me that the car noise appears to match the car going across the screen. Btw if you don't have Grok in your Tesla you can access it online to ask questions.

[deleted] 2026-03-02 15:09

[deleted]

grokstr 2026-03-02 15:16

Then I am as mystified as your friend. The compute to pull that off in real time would be massive and I don't see why it would be a feature as no one likes hearing their own voice replayed back. But, despite my username (which was chosen before Grok AI existed) I am just a Tesla owner and only know so much.

[deleted] 2026-03-02 15:20

[deleted]

grokstr 2026-03-02 15:29

ok so when I ask if it can "hear" me, it says "Loud and clear" but further questions reveal it doesn't actually hear me but rather my voice is transposed into text by a pre-processor and it acts upon text. I'm not disputing what happened btw. But to mimic a voice response from such limited input as just a single question or two would be difficult to explain.

Packing-Tape-Man 2026-03-02 16:45

Maybe that crazy evil voice is your own -- we all thing we sound different than we do. JK...

Packing-Tape-Man 2026-03-02 16:52

It's interesting how Tesla is not commenting on this -- it's been widely reported now. What reason do they have to be coding capacity to mimic and impersonate our voices?

steebulee 2026-03-02 17:09

lol true. I’m the demon I fear.

Bananenhaus23 2026-03-02 17:45

Same thing just happened to me with Eve while speaking German.

Glum_Low_3135 2026-03-02 18:28

It literally used my voice for replies, it was weird and I dont think it should happen. I'm glad there are other people who were able to grab recordings of this on their ends

Glum_Low_3135 2026-03-02 18:30

The conspiracy plot thickens, but in actuality who knows. This thread has been shared over 100 times, maybe someone who works with Tesla or has communications with high up execs have had this forwarded to them. I could see potential legal ramifications with this to some extent in the future, but who knows.

Benjaminbl12 2026-03-02 19:02

Omg I thought I was going crazy! ItI did the same for me too! We were talking and then it switched and started doing a clone version of my voice?! Kinda creep ngl. Almost like it’s constantly listening.

IcyRayns 2026-03-02 19:16

This isn't a "voice cloning feature" or anything of the sort. It's not intentional behavior by any means. The way modern realtime voice LLM stacks work is often somewhat speech-to-speech, so the model doesn't just receive the text transcribed from your voice, but (also or only) tokens which represent the raw speech you provided. Your prosody is encoded in these acoustic tokens. Much like an LLM will commonly repeat the words you used, sometimes the speaker characteristics that were encoded as the prompt can "leak" to the output pipeline rather than the pre-configured Ara or whichever is in use, then those get picked up by the vocoder and results in accidental zero-shot voice cloning. They can tune it into happening less frequently with some effort, but it's not surprising at all that this would happen naturally.

Glum_Low_3135 2026-03-02 19:16

Exactly, I get the "always listening" element (you know with Alexa you can listen to every recorded convo you had)...I can assume this is the same. Still should not be replying in our own voices as that can be a serious privacy concern.

Prestigious_Sell9516 2026-03-02 19:41

Are you using grok free in car or do you have a grok account ?

Glum_Low_3135 2026-03-02 19:47

I signed up using my Google account. I don't pay any subscriptions though.

Born-Emu-3499 2026-03-02 20:42

Same. Exact clone. Black Mirror.

Ornery-Werewolf-3578 2026-03-02 21:21

Same thing happened to me last night about 5 pm AZ time

oculus42 2026-03-03 14:23

I mean...have you missed out on [Grok becoming a CSAM generator](https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cvg1mzlryxeo), its [white genocide rants](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-05-25/grok-ai-accuracy-doubts-after-white-genocide-claims-fixation/105325028) last year, as well as [Grok being powered by illegal pollution](https://tennesseelookout.com/2025/07/07/a-billionaire-an-ai-supercomputer-toxic-emissions-and-a-memphis-community-that-did-nothing-wrong/)? Of all the questionable things AI is being used for, Grok seems to be actively embracing "ethics hurt profits" that makes me completely unwilling to use this model, no matter how good it might be at tasks.

Misophonic4000 2026-03-03 15:19

Right, all these things are obviously questionable, but it's not stealing/cloning your voice without your express consent
