This Hurts!

Bickenchutt05 | 2026-02-28 17:30 | 20 views

22 M3 LR I took a different route home yesterday. I had a few errands after work. I had just pulled out into traffic about a mile before and engaged FSD. I see the pothole, but there are cars in front, behind, and to my left and we are traveling about 40mph. I immediately jerk the wheel as much as I can, but both passengers side tires hit the pothole. I get a warning and pull over in a parking lot. The side wall of both tires are trashed. I walk down and speak to the owner of the business right in front of this pothole and he says this is just getting worse, that the city won’t fix it. It was scary standing there as cars were flying by and trailers were bouncing through it. Rocks were hitting his store front from the pothole?! I think my wheels are ok, but my car is towed to Tesla on a Friday evening waiting to be checked out and get 4 new tires on Monday. It was a hard lick! Definitely going to need an alignment. Oh and it didn’t even record it?! And I was so mad that I forgot. So dumb…

Send the bill to the body responsible for maintaining the road.

Sidewall matters, even on road! Sorry this happened to you. This kind of thing is death for low profile tires

I am filling a claim with the city on Monday!

Bickenchutt05 2026-02-28 17:49

This is one thing I miss about my truck, but not much else.

Have them check your rim. Looks like a rub, could be more damage.

Bickenchutt05 2026-02-28 18:03

The front definitely hit harder than the rear. Both had a mark. I am worried about the rims and suspension damage at this point. It was a very hard hit. The pic of the pothole does it no justice!

FSD win, taking another toaster off the street

Whole-Beginning1362 2026-02-28 18:46

Why buy 4 tires?

Whole-Beginning1362 2026-02-28 18:46

Please post how that goes

We’re all a bit safer

Good question! This happened Friday at 4:15pm ish. I have AAA and I can contact Tesla, but one hitch the tires on this car are newer but cheap aftermarket bought from Walmart. I bought the car used and they were already on it. I had to make a decision about where to get the car towed on Friday evening?! lol I only have 29k miles so I have warranty until September on the car so I thought let’s go with Tesla in case something is wrong from the impact and I didn’t want 2 cheap tires and 2 Continentals. I don’t know. Did I make the right decision?

Bickenchutt05 2026-02-28 19:38

I wish that was it! Hahaha

Similar to the hit I took 18 months ago, one rim and two tires later, here I am. The only blessing, other then no additional damage, was the fact that I had 4k miles on the car so the tires were fairly fresh all around.

Bickenchutt05 2026-02-28 20:46

I hope it’s not a rim! Sucks man!

Experienced the same thing just a little over a month ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaFSD/comments/1qkq5ot/fsd_142x_runs_over_pothole_destroying_my_two/ What I ended up doing rather than getting it towed was this: - Left it parked on the street overnight - Set up an appointment with Tesla Mobile Service just to replace the front tire (because that one was clearly wrecked that night and I couldn't tell if the rear one was wrecked). - Then shopped online a bit for a better price on the rear tire (found 20% off buying the oem tire straight from goodyear.com), which came with free installation at a local installer. - Discovered what a pain in the ass it is to get an alignment done (properly) on the Model 3 (Model Y is similar). - I bought after market adjustable rear toe and rear camber arms and took it to a performance oriented auto shop to install and do the alignment. Now I can get an alignment done anywhere other than the front camber and front caster. Outside of the cost of the arms, this only cost me slightly more in total ($320 for the install + alignment altogether) than getting an alignment done at Tesla ($275).

Warranty doesn't cover outside influence only manufacturer defects.

They won’t pay squat. This literally happened to me in October where a new pothole opened on I-5

Bickenchutt05 2026-03-01 10:45

That’s what I was afraid of…

Bickenchutt05 2026-03-01 10:48

I kinda figured this but I’m going to try at least. The potholes have gotten really bad here this year. It is insane. It doesn’t matter if you are using FSD or HW3 or HW4 or driving an ICE car they are almost unavoidable in traffic. You have to remember where they are and stay out of those lanes on the interstate.

Right_Economist_3508 2026-03-01 22:46

A lot of potholes in my state because of the snow plow.

Apprehensive_Vast941 2026-03-02 07:08

Why didn't FSD see the pothole and apply brakes?

Bickenchutt05 2026-03-02 20:25

There were cars all around me, including one on my bumper. I am not sure what it would have done if it did see it. But, HW3 doesn't do very well with seeing objects in the road.

Bickenchutt05 2026-03-02 20:31

This hurts me just watching it. I feel this so much...

someusername5873 2026-03-03 00:37

FYI, if you are still shopping for tires and you're going with the OEM spec tire for 19", you can get 20% off still at goodyear.com using coupon code: PRIMEMBER20 https://preview.redd.it/zwxtzktd7qmg1.jpeg?width=1754&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f3efbf958b638caf8d0f9a85cbcdeea418eaf887
