It is now permanently ruined. You can put wd40 on it to hide it but it will never go away.

lionheart4life 2026-02-28 17:18

I just use Meguiar's car wash stuff and have never had this problem. I don't go to automatic car washes because so many people posted this happening.

short_bus_genius 2026-02-28 17:19

Stainless steel wipes from Home Depot / Lowe’s. So surprisingly quick

Illustrious-Tap-7690 2026-02-28 17:19

I wiped away with my thumb and it never came back 🤷‍♂️

webtechmonkey 2026-02-28 17:20

Tub O Towels cleans this up easily

pascaltheorem 2026-02-28 17:22

Did you take it through the regular wash ?

THATS_LEGIT_BRO 2026-02-28 17:25

Did you lick your thumb first? 😄

Illustrious-Tap-7690 2026-02-28 17:36

I may be old but I'm not THAT old 😆

Sudden-Thing-7672 2026-02-28 17:51

I thought the same 🤣🤣🤣

Sudden-Thing-7672 2026-02-28 17:52

Yes 🤦🏼‍♀️ I didn’t know that caused it until I just read it here.

kfar87 2026-02-28 17:58

Not a big deal. Most quick detailers or invisible glass will take it right off.

pascaltheorem 2026-02-28 17:59

😔 it’s okay. You live and learn. Even handwashing can cause that if you don’t get all the soap off. It’s just avoidable more because you’re doing it yourself. Also, it’ll eventually swirl up your car. Hand wash for the win.

ThatJerkBoxwell 2026-02-28 18:01

WD-40. Spray a little on a microfiber cloth and run it along all the black trim. To eliminate the water/soap staining, reapply every few months.

SmarthomeRiggs 2026-02-28 18:02

I used tub-o-towels and silicone spray. 2 different solutions I was told about, but I do them together. Not sure which is better, but both together resolved it for me. So I just do what’s working. 🙂 Hope that helps.

MinuteLingonberry307 2026-02-28 18:35

Go to Walmart buy a bottle of auto exterior cleaner with the word "detailer".. it's mist spray, goes on everything from rubber to plastic to steel it will wipe away all marks. Every major brand has it.

Kooter37 2026-02-28 18:53

I use wd-40 on a cotton ball. It’s quick and easy. When it decides to stay warm I’ll be hand washing from home. But there is no chance I’m hand washing twice a week when it’s cold outside.

JtheNinja 2026-02-28 19:13

Incorrect. WD40 actually does remove it. You’re doing something to re-deposit it (ie, going through the car wash again) Products like turtle wax ice spray n shine will prevent it forming to some degree

ProphePsyed 2026-02-28 19:38

No

ProphePsyed 2026-02-28 19:39

Nope.

stormblaz 2026-02-28 20:23

Tesla recommends a hand wash location and not the machine as it can degrade paint quality. Highly recommend finding a good touchless carwash

Human-Statement-4083 2026-02-28 20:46

Which spray?

FLawless______ 2026-02-28 20:51

Don’t windex; at least not the one w ammonia. You’ll ruin your tint and discolor the trim

Landon_Strata 2026-02-28 20:51

Unscented baby wipes work for me. (Also, never went through a carwash. It just appeared one day.)

HWbikergal 2026-02-28 21:06

Even hand washing cases this. They are made out of metal. Use a little WD-40 on a paper towel. Wipe on and back to normal until rain or next wash.

webtechmonkey 2026-02-28 21:07

No what?

SyntaxError_1024 2026-02-28 21:10

Stop using cheap soap.

Sassy-Bongocat 2026-02-28 21:33

Use tub O towels, this is what Tesla service uses to clean up the trim and can confirm from my own use this works

RRovan 2026-02-28 22:31

I’ve read that stainless steel cleaning wipes help.

IndustrialJones 2026-02-28 23:50

I'm that old lol

cwiceman01 2026-03-01 02:37

I've only used touchless car washes when not hand washing and it leaves the same type of residue... Has something to do with the type of chemicals they use that are harsh but clean "better"...

26calvinking 2026-03-01 05:05

Tub o towels 100%

Sudden-Thing-7672 2026-03-01 05:08

We have baby wipes on hand. I will for sure try this 😁

Landon_Strata 2026-03-01 05:09

Let me know how it goes!
