🤡

So do they paint the tires those colors? Seems like the paint on the tires would come off quickly.. Or do you have to buy special tires that have the color embedded in the rubber?

TheBowerbird 2026-02-26 14:57

The color is baked into the plastic aero cover. The tires aren't painted in the production ones.

WilliamTRyker 2026-02-26 14:57

How is this different than any other car?

Lonepartee 2026-02-26 14:59

No, seriously! They are endless. You can pick a color of a paint and a color of a wheel cover. Its unheard of!

quantgorithm 2026-02-26 15:01

The car itself is not painted. The metal itself is somehow colorized it has that bronze color off the line removing a massive pain point of manufacturing and you don't have to worry about paint chips etc. It also means you don't need to wrap it in plastic to protect it.

YouKidsGetOffMyYard 2026-02-26 15:14

So the "hubcap" basically extends over the tires? I guess thats great but makes the chance of curb rash or damage from potholes higher.

YouKidsGetOffMyYard 2026-02-26 15:29

Although having the paint embedded in the plastic has a ton of advantages and being able to basically pick any color is cool if you ever need to replace a body panel it may be tough to match the color. I would think the color will fade some over time (especially if they are not applying any sort of clear coat covering on them). So you would have to have the factory make a new panel with that original color and match the fade. I guess in that case you could stick on any color panel (even used from a junkyard) and then just wrap the car to get everything matching again.

YouKidsGetOffMyYard 2026-02-26 15:32

Pretty sure all the body panels are plastic not metal and they can mix the color into the plastic as they are being formed. (Like the Saturn cars used to do) Well except on the Saturns they painted the panels as well.

quantgorithm 2026-02-26 15:42

That must be it. I just recall that it didn't need paint.

TheBowerbird 2026-02-26 19:06

This is correct. The color is baked into it.

TheBowerbird 2026-02-26 19:06

It won't affect pothole potential. It's just clipped in over the wheel. It would actually protect the wheel underneath.

TheBowerbird 2026-02-26 19:07

There are UV inhibitors in it just like with paint.

BigChicken8666 2026-02-26 21:10

Who cares. Wish Tesla would get back to making good cars instead of this nonsense.

Voidfang_Investments 2026-02-26 21:14

Model 3 is exceptional

Tradetheday2093 2026-02-26 21:33

It just is ok? It’s has 4 wheels, other cars do too but these 4 wheels are better. You just don’t understand. Stop fighting with me.

Tradetheday2093 2026-02-26 22:04

What are you talking about?

BigChicken8666 2026-02-26 22:54

Talking about Musk wasting time on this nonsense when its not for the core customers that are keeping this brand alive.

Tradetheday2093 2026-02-26 23:06

I hate Tesla hubcaps. They scratched up my CT wheels. Hope this fixed it by now.
