Would you buy a used tesla and why or why not?

i’m in the market for a new vehicle and have my eyes on a tesla model y used though

yes. it depends on your budget, expectations, use case, and whether you can charge it at home.

B1G_USC 2026-02-26 02:55

I would only buy a used Tesla right now. No lane keep is a deal breaker for me.

lanadeltrey 2026-02-26 02:55

I wouldn’t, but that’s because any used Tesla id be interested in would be too close in price to new for me not to just buy new.

pillowmite 2026-02-26 02:56

I bought my 2023 M3 RWD with 4500 miles on it in August 2025, manufactured in August 2023, in service September 2023. That got me a full two years basic warranty and another four, already subscribed. I had the windshield inspected and now subscribe to the windshield plan. The car was flawless. It now has 6700 miles on it. HW3 works perfectly as it could. Carfax was basically blank, driven locally only. From an Autonation trade-in, for 21000 dollars. I had five days to change my mind Would I do it again? .Absolutely!

Honest_Manager 2026-02-26 02:57

As long as you can charge at home and it fits in your driving requirements then why not? I bought a used M3 stealth and have had no issues. 2 years in may.

Tradetheday2093 2026-02-26 02:57

how many miles did you guys buy them at?

little_nipas 2026-02-26 02:57

Yes, Yes, and yes. I bought a 2022 model 3 Long Range which was a Hertz rental in its previous life. Worth every penny of $17k the 2 years ago I paid for it.

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-26 02:57

yea i see, the only downside is i wont be able to charge at home because i rent but there is a super charge less than 3 minutes from me

spz_ 2026-02-26 02:58

I did. 22 MYLR. 30,000 miles. No issues. Supercharging Only = No Gas Money Savings Charging at home = save a ton of money Bumper to bumper warranty ends at 50k miles. Battery + Drive Unit warranty 120,000 I swear someone should make a wiki for these questions.

JJSimon904 2026-02-26 02:58

I bought my 2018 M3LR in 2021 with 40k miles. I'm at 239k problem free miles. It has worked out for me

Over-Breath-5769 2026-02-26 02:58

Did they get rid of the lane assistance driving?

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-26 02:59

woowww i’m curious to know how bad it hit you guys 😭

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-26 03:00

that’s valid

pakpak786 2026-02-26 03:00

Yes I'd buy used from Tesla since you get an additional 1yr/10k mile warranty

EditorOdd6639 2026-02-26 03:00

I got a 2018 m3. W 88k miles. Been loving it. Obviously give it a good look over and drive and do a 15 hour battery test.

ExuberanceOfSlfImprt 2026-02-26 03:00

I bought a 23 X Plaid with 12k. Late build new headlights HW4 basically half price. Used is the way.

EditorOdd6639 2026-02-26 03:00

Mine didn’t

Tescamp_Dan 2026-02-26 03:02

Whenever there's a suitable option, I almost always buy used. We've driven over 100,000 kilometers now, and there haven't been any issues at all.

Chinaboy812 2026-02-26 03:03

Autopilot!

JJSimon904 2026-02-26 03:03

Yeah I'm at 239k miles on my M3LR with "enhanced autopilot" and wanted to replace it when it hits 300k but now that it is almost all or nothing with FSD, we might not. This is my favorite feature of the car 🤣

chubby464 2026-02-26 03:03

How’d you find it

acaurora 2026-02-26 03:04

Did you buy all of the used ones direct from Tesla, or via 3rd party (i.e., non-Tesla dealership)? Did the listings have photos of the actual vehicle? What was the condition like on them?

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-26 03:04

where did you buy from?

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-26 03:05

how would i know?

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-26 03:05

it might be the move!

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-26 03:05

that’s directly thru tesla?

pillowmite 2026-02-26 03:06

A local Subaru dealership that had to eceived the car as a trade in.

ABoredDeveloper 2026-02-26 03:06

how many miles did that have?

Tall-Laugh-4762 2026-02-26 03:07

I personality would not.

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-26 03:07

why??

[deleted] 2026-02-26 03:07

[deleted]

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-26 03:08

charging at home might be the problem :/

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-26 03:08

wooowwww unreal deal

undonedomm 2026-02-26 03:09

I wouldn't buy a used Tesla. Here is the reason. I would only buy hw4. And due to higher interest on used Tesla, the difference between new and used in terms of monthly payment is very minimal.

Tall-Laugh-4762 2026-02-26 03:09

It was cheaper for me to lease last year because of the EV tax credits. My car is the latest HW and I pay $350 a month for a M3 premium with white interior.

AltruisticPapaya1415 2026-02-26 03:12

10000000000% yes

JurassicTerror 2026-02-26 03:12

Yes I did. Only had it a month but no complaints so far other than a rattling noise coming from inside the passenger door noticeable while driving at lower speeds. Just a little obnoxious at times but not the end of the world.

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-26 03:13

thank you!

FLawless______ 2026-02-26 03:13

A lot of people will say no home charger, no problem! But I think it kills a big part of the convenience having an EV. Teslas are fairly low maintenance, if they're taken care of. The main issue with buying used is you don't know wtf the previous owner used them for and how they drove them. 3 years old 80k miles? Worn rear seats? Probably a rideshare car. Depending how far back you go the older 3s and Ys have a lot of nuisance problems, can you live with rattling, bubbling vegan leather, loose window seals? I think one of the older 3s had a crappy seal on the trunk by design and if you open it in the rain water poured right in from the glass. Insurance is also not cheap. Out of warranty repairs is not cheap. I'll stop ranting because you can for sure find good used Teslas, I'm just skeptical of 3s and Ys because majority are abused before being dumped on the 2nd market. It's actually a reason I was only interested in used MS MX; higher chance it wasn't uber'ed and had a responsible owner.

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-26 03:13

where did you purchase from?

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-26 03:14

do tell😅

Ataiatek 2026-02-26 03:15

Yes but I would only buy it if it's within warranty. If it has more than 35,000 mi on it it's just not going to be worth it especially if the car is several years old. Because things will break with time and the service on these things are absolutely insane.

AutomatedCabbage 2026-02-26 03:16

I bought mine with 62,000km on it. I'm now at 345,000km. I wouldn't want one without uss and two stalks though, so probably wouldn't do it again

Annual_Grass538 2026-02-26 03:17

My 2024 Y AWD was used, we can’t afford to buy new right now. Husband did a ton of research and we inquired about probably 10 other Teslas before getting the one we got. So far there have been no big surprises and we’re extremely happy with our purchase.

N1NJAE 2026-02-26 03:18

A new LR AWD Model 3 is $80k CAD here in Canada. That’s before any other options like paint color. I ended up buying a used 2024 SR RWD in the color I wanted with only 18k km for $42k. It was mint condition. No regrets.

Agathon813 2026-02-26 03:18

Bought a 2022 Model S a little over a year ago. Best car I've owned.

menntu 2026-02-26 03:19

Total score. Why was the price relatively low?

Bakkarak 2026-02-26 03:20

Bought a used ‘22 M3 AWD with around 110k miles. Range was down to 290 miles fully charged - which is plenty for me - and otherwise it’s been flawless. Paid just under $20,000 for what would normally be out of my price range. I do wish I had HW4 but I enjoy driving it manually so much I doubt I’d get FSD regardless.

D1TAC 2026-02-26 03:21

Juniper only atm.

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-26 03:22

that’s stellar congrats

shaggy99 2026-02-26 03:22

Well I know of one 3 year old Model 3 bought at auction, for 9,000 GBP. Looked pretty good, except the steering wheel was worn. Battery was down to 88%. Oh yeah, it had 216,000 miles on it, and apart from tires and wiper blades had almost zero spent on maintenance.

Sad_Principle_2531 2026-02-26 03:24

I think 3 years old from tesla is the sweet spot. If I were you I'd buy a late 2023 with HW4 for best value on the Y.

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-26 03:25

might be a dumb question but how would i know if its hw3 or hw4?

JurassicTerror 2026-02-26 03:26

Carmax

immortalalchemist 2026-02-26 03:27

No, because while regular maintenance is low, when things do eventually break, it costs a lot and most of the things that end up breaking occurs after the car has passed the warranty period. I’ve recently had to have my superbottle and 5 way valve replaced which prevented the car from charging at high speeds at superchargers. That was a $1k fix after they originally quoted me $450 just to replace the 5way valve but said they had to do the superbottle too when I arrived at my appointment. I’ve had issues with service centers quoting one thing and trying to inflate the cost at the time of the appointment on two separate occasions.

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-26 03:27

what was the price?

SubieSTI360 2026-02-26 03:28

Just got a 2024 M3P with 15,000 miles on it. Others are right. These cars depreciate like a hot ruck. Used is the way to go. Order from Tesla pre owned. They extend your warranty by one year. Battery warranty is still 8 years. But I think Tesla is more qualified to sell them used and is more stringent. I didn't care for ordering a car on a phone app. But other than that it was all good!

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-26 03:32

thank you !

BluejayBetty 2026-02-26 03:32

100% yes. We currently own two used Teslas. One is a 2017 model s that I've had for about 6 years. And the other is a 2024 model 3 that we bought in 2025. Both are really great. Prices are amazing when they're used and usually the mileage is pretty low. These cars don't need a ton of maintenance so it's not like things are wearing out left and right. I love my 2017 S90d because it has an actual operating sunroof. It has the full winter package and it's a great mushroom color that they only made back. Then. I did have to get the computer replaced in 2025. Cost about 2500 bucks. But other wise been fabulous for 6 years and cost me 50 Grand back then. I keep telling my husband I want to buy another one like maybe a 2018 model S for backup because it's only 20 grand! But he told me no 😞

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-26 03:33

at home charging?

ScrewWorkn 2026-02-26 03:33

Depending where the panel is they may be able to hook up a temp 240 that you can remove later. Worth it if you ask me.

ScrewWorkn 2026-02-26 03:35

Well that’s just not true. A two year old Tesla will save you a ton.

SanDiegoLifer 2026-02-26 03:37

I bought used from Tesla and I would absolutely do it again. It’s going to keep depreciating but my 3 year old $35k car was $65k brand new. It’s probably only worth $25k now but I don’t care because I love it.

ExuberanceOfSlfImprt 2026-02-26 03:37

They depreciate like crazy not sure let the first guy take the L.

beansruns 2026-02-26 03:38

If I ever buy another one, I’ll buy 1 year used I made the mistake of buying new and selling less than a year later, a very expensive mistake 1 year used and you skipped the steepest part of the depreciation curve

Tower-Union 2026-02-26 03:40

Would and did. In 2023 I bought a 2014 Model S for $28,000 CAD. Had 200,000km on it and now had 305,000km. Mostly supercharged (for free) and averaging $500/year of electricity at home. No regrets, at all.

SubieSTI360 2026-02-26 03:42

While I'll agree the gap between HW3 and HW4 was huge. 2024 to 2026 was a 10k gap. I was looking at a 2023 M3P for 32k, the 2024 was 43k and new was 54k. The HW4 was worth every penny. Not just for the software. The car(at least for the 3) was upgraded in every way. Adaptive suspension, total and very improved interior.. improved and much better body..

Salami_Swamii 2026-02-26 03:45

I’m in NZ and bought a 2022 Tesla Model 3 RWD (Nov build) about 4 months ago from Tesla- 50,000km on it. It supposedly went through Tesla’s “102-point inspection”which I’m fairly sure includes checking that it has 4 wheels and vibes. Still has factory warranty until Dec 2026 / 80,000km, plus they added another 1 year / 20,000km. They also threw in Enhanced Autopilot, heated seats + steering wheel, and brand new Michelin Pilot Sports. So yeah..not mad. Only hiccup: the TPMS light came on literally as I drove out of the showroom. But they fixed it under warranty, no dramas. Paid a bit more than private/dealer market, but with the extra warranty, EAP and new tyres, I reckon it balances out. No regrets (yet).

skspoppa733 2026-02-26 03:46

I LOVE buying from the app. Spending all that time with sleazy salesmen is one of my least favorite things to do. Ever.

JurassicTerror 2026-02-26 03:52

Mobile charger at home 99% of the time. I don’t drive that much on the day to day.

rageagainstmymachin 2026-02-26 03:52

ill sell you a used 2023 model 3 with 40k miles. salvage title but professionally rebuilt

SubieSTI360 2026-02-26 03:57

I didn't care for it. It was my fault. But I was one click away from ordering the WRONG CAR. Lol.. I had been going back and forth between the 2023 and 2024. I ended up ordering the wrong one and got all the way to the end and noticed the price was 10k off. I caught it and after not to much hassle got on the right track. But still. You can't do that in person. Again, that was my fault but still. I'm sure you can see how that could happen. I had 6 blue M3P tabs open. I also wasn't thrilled ordering as car without laying eyes on it. Which, it all worked out. Car is beautiful. I think it's worth it to go Tesla pre owned over any other seller. But yeah, I about had a heart attack. Lol

undonedomm 2026-02-26 03:57

43k car Tesla pre-owned they offer 7.19 interest rate. So over 5 years compare to 0.99 rate on new car. You pay 7k extra in interest. Making that 43k car into 50k car. Why not pay a little more per month and buy new ones.

pw154 2026-02-26 03:59

> yea i see, the only downside is i wont be able to charge at home because i rent but there is a super charge less than 3 minutes from me Then it's not worth it. Home charging is almost the entire point of EV ownership. If you can't plug it in and forget about it you'll be better off with a hybrid.

undonedomm 2026-02-26 04:02

Interest on used car 7.19%. new car 0.9. the monthly payment difference is very minimal. Unless your buying with cash.

SubieSTI360 2026-02-26 04:03

I see what you mean. Interest rates are bananas right now. I was lucky enough to have 25k from my previous car and was able to pay the rest off in cash. So no interest. But that's not the norm for me. Financing a used car right now is crazy. Even with great credit.

Former-Discount4279 2026-02-26 04:04

This might annoy you but we bought a new 24 mxp for 90k because it was used for test drives. It had 200 miles...

undonedomm 2026-02-26 04:07

Putting 25k cash also lose out on potential investment profit. And because hw4+ is not cheap, with interest on top of it. It really is very close to new car price

deej628 2026-02-26 04:10

Don’t all new ones not have autopilot?

mr_chill_pill 2026-02-26 04:15

I bought a used 24 MYP last year with 17k miles on it, dont regret it.

FLawless______ 2026-02-26 04:16

A cheaper monthly because you’re backloading the buyout at the end of the term, or you walk with nothing. That’s what leases are; they offer flexibility to walk if you don’t like the car after the term or buy it out. If you do buy it out, you still lose and end up paying a little more. If you finance you lose a lot more bc now you’re getting a used car rate.

Balancedone_1 2026-02-26 04:16

Really depends on the cost, interest rate and what is in your budget.

jwinskowski 2026-02-26 04:19

We've bought 3 and have been happy with all of them!

nevadadealers 2026-02-26 04:20

I did. Got a good deal on a model y with FSD. Next one was new because I wanted a highland model 3 and was able to transfer the FSD.

Ornery_Climate1056 2026-02-26 04:30

Anyone reading the comments here and seeing all the hand-wringing over depreciation should keep one thing in mind: Depreciation only matters if or when you sell the car. If you plan to drive it until the the wheels fall off, depreciation is no BFD. And also look at current trends.....the price of used Teslas, etc. is increasing, not decreasing. So, just be sure you do your homework and don't get caught up in red herrings.

Tescamp_Dan 2026-02-26 04:30

Actually, demo cars are a great option. The electric motors are extremely durable, so you really just need to give it a thorough detailing.

Ornery_Climate1056 2026-02-26 04:35

All Teslas have the lane keep feature (they call it "lane departure avoidance").....it's part of TACC (Traffic Aware Cruise Control) and they all have it, including the ones coming out of the factory doors today. You may be thinking of lane centering. I have one PHEV car that has lane centering and I use TACC on my Tesla (the other car) all the time. I wouldn't turn around for the difference. Also, what Tesla do you own and drive now and what is your experience with TACC? Or do you just read comments here from all the Chicken Littles and anti-Tesla lurkers and take them as gospel?

kam-gill 2026-02-26 04:36

Will buy nothing else ever again but a Tesla and will buy used next time. Let someone else pay the depreciation.

nunchuckcrimes 2026-02-26 04:41

If you buy used you might end up with a better car. I can't believe those idiots removed Autosteer.

President_Connor_Roy 2026-02-26 04:42

Lane keep and lane centering are, for all intents and purposes, the same thing as referred to here. New Teslas don’t have it for no reason other than to drive FSD subscriptions higher, which SUCKS.

dev_lvl80 2026-02-26 04:44

Used - No, reason tesla service is worst. New not, reason - there are better alternatives with predictable future

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-26 04:47

due noted thank you

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-26 04:47

like what?

dev_lvl80 2026-02-26 04:49

Bmw, Porsche?

Former-Discount4279 2026-02-26 04:50

Based on the miles it must have only been a demo for a week or so.

bnnybtch 2026-02-26 04:55

can you elaborate? i’m in the market rn after totaling my model 3

newstudent_here 2026-02-26 04:56

No, new ones don't have Autopilot. Only FSD as a subscription.

deej628 2026-02-26 05:10

D1tac said juniper only atm that’s why I was questioning his comment.

NarwhalDane 2026-02-26 05:11

Get a 2016 or older Model S with unlimited free supercharging

President_Connor_Roy 2026-02-26 05:12

New Model 3s do traffic aware cruise control only, so they’ll keep the speed you set but will slow down if you encounter a slower car ahead. Up until recently, they would also stay in their lane as long as you were holding the steering wheel (no lane changes or stops or turns, but they’d at least drive themselves in the lane they were currently in). Was called Autopilot, but it’s gone now. Used Teslas still have it, but no more on new ones sadly. Can pay $99/mo to get it back (plus stops, turns, lane changes, etc — Full Self Driving). Sad there’s no free option that would cover a fair amount of driving fairly well now.

newstudent_here 2026-02-26 05:13

Yeah, you would have to get an older (used) Juniper to get autopilot. If you buy a new Juniper now, it won't have autopilot.

ysfex3 2026-02-26 05:17

Used Tesla is amazing value

GloriousWaffles 2026-02-26 05:18

Bought a 2022 Model 3 RWD, 20k miles, $20k (including taxes, credits/rebates) in 2024 Now at 50k miles. 0 regrets, love the car.

B1llyzane 2026-02-26 05:25

In the Netherlands (neighboring country) you get 5k discount on your new Tesla. That is 37k minus 5 which is 32k for a new model 3 standard. Second hand, you get a 2021 with 50k km’s for 26k. The second hand market doesn’t make sense, way overheated. The new 5k deal is too good to be true just hand in a scrap car and you’re golden

Ornery_Climate1056 2026-02-26 05:30

Wrong.....there were three levels of "Auto pilot"....TACC, "Autosteer," and FSD. "Autopilot" is the parent "folder" on the screen that they were all nested under. The "Autosteer" piece is discontinued.....TACC and FSD are available and TACC has lane keep (Tesla calls it "lane departure avoidance"). And everyone is jumping on the "ooooo, Elon pulled Autosteer to make us rent FSD" bandwagon without thinking that the various lawsuits and regulatory scrutiny of Autosteer might have had a little something to do with it.

itsians 2026-02-26 05:32

Used Carmax (surprisingly found a good price at the time) Carmax (mine at least) was very pleasant. Never used them before and I was impressed overall. They offer warranties but my car was already under the Tesla warranties so I cancelled Carmax warranties in 2 weeks for a refund. Buddy of mine has had his car for almost 200k (180 something currently I think). Only issues he has was obviously suspension (like every car) and minor ac leak.

ScuffedBalata 2026-02-26 05:33

Seeing that I bought a used Tesla 7 years ago that I'm still driving... uh yeah!

Grrowling 2026-02-26 05:33

How does it have lane keep? Lane keep and auto steer are the same right?

President_Connor_Roy 2026-02-26 05:37

New Teslas no longer keep their lanes. All that’s left is the “you’re going to crash if I don’t save you” part that hopefully nobody ever has to actually use. $99+tax every fucking month if you want anything more than the traffic aware cruise control a very old Subaru I used to have came with. What’s false about any of that?

Ornery_Climate1056 2026-02-26 05:45

No....the confusion is the difference between "lane centering" and ""lane keep", which Tesla calls "lane departure avoidance." Lane centering, which was part of Autosteer, attempts to keep the car in the center of the lane which, interestingly, is not where most of us drive...we tend to "lean right"....look at the wear on the road and you'll see that. Lane keep (included in TACC), on the other hand, keeps you from exiting the lane....kinda of like invisible "bumpers." This whole discussion is folks making a mountain out of a mole hill because they don't know what these two features are and aren't. I have two cars, a Toyota R4P that has lane centering and a Tesla MYJ that has TACC/lane keep and the difference between the two is peanuts.

savedatheist 2026-02-26 05:46

Picked up a ‘24 ModelX from autotrader private sellers. Would do again!

ReddBert 2026-02-26 05:49

I did. Old type Model 3. I love it. Never going back.

Remarkable-Owl-5712 2026-02-26 05:49

100% try and get a HW4 vehicle for sure and if you one with FSD, even better!

Ornery_Climate1056 2026-02-26 05:50

New Teslas include TACC which has the lane keep feature that they call "lane departure avoidance." Dig into the Tesla documentation on their web site and do a little reading. Hint: Do a Google search for "Tesla 2026 lane departure avoidance"

Grrowling 2026-02-26 05:51

Ohh thank you for explaining that. Now I feel a bit better having TACC with lane keep. New model y owner

Tall-Laugh-4762 2026-02-26 05:55

I don’t plan on buying it out. I want a new car every 3 years. I know how leases work. I will always lease my cars. Cars are depreciating assets and I pay for the depreciation. I don’t of many ppl who actually keep their car for 10 years plus especially a Tesla but go for it if you want. I like new cars and don’t want to spend money on fixing them when they start to malfunction after the warranty. My next car is a Volvo xc90. I will lease. The only car I’d ever buy is a Honda or Toyota but I don’t want to drive them

battlehamstar 2026-02-26 05:57

In 2023-ish I bought I 2018 model X for $37k out the door. The prior owner had paid for all the available upgrades. Battery had lifetime maybe 10-15% less capacity. Been the best car I’ve owned. Upgrading it to FSD full no subscription only cost me $2K.

SnooHesitations1020 2026-02-26 06:12

Yes

DigitalJEM 2026-02-26 06:19

My first Tesla was new. The last 2, which I still have were purchased used.

President_Connor_Roy 2026-02-26 06:30

Yes, this is what I’m describing. It does nothing whatsoever to drive itself like the now-discontinued Autopilot (TACC+autosteer), which many many other automakers continue to offer. I rented a Corolla last fall that had it, for example, on what I assume was a fairly base trim since it was a cheap rental and it worked fine. But nope, gotta pump those FSD sub numbers to get Elon past the trillion mark it seems.

hfalor 2026-02-26 06:44

I bought a brand new Cybertruck only to take advantage of the 0% interest for 5 years. I also bought a 2018 model 3 with 123k miles for $11k and my wife loves it we ended up seller her gas car (its at 132k miles now)

psaux_grep 2026-02-26 06:52

Some of them are showroom cars, some they pre-register them to help meet the target at the end of a quarter. Or they were rejected by the original customer and they’ve recycled them or fixed the defect. Paint/finish issues used to be a major reason back in the day, not sure anymore. Haven’t been watching too closely.

imacleopard 2026-02-26 07:01

Ohhhh boy wait till you see how much it’s worth in 2-3 years

lanamakesart 2026-02-26 07:05

bought a used 24 m3 with 2k miles for 10k less than new, from tesla used

AssociateValuable745 2026-02-26 07:15

I would in a heart beat, its a good deal especially if you can find a higher mileage one.

little_nipas 2026-02-26 07:17

101k miles I now have 127k. The only work I’ve had done was the rear motor bushings. Cost $1,500 to replace. I also wanted the aero wheels so I bought those and new tires since it originally came with the 19’ sport wheels.

007Cable 2026-02-26 07:50

I bought 2 of them. 2019 M3P 2019 MSP (Raven) I've had the 3 for about 5 years and the S for 3. No issues on either.

Substantial_Injury_1 2026-02-26 08:26

Had my late 2021 Model 3 Long Range for two weeks tomorrow. It's been utterly brilliant. For how tedious my daily commute is, it's been transformative. The acceleration is great fun, but the real revelation is how easy and relaxing to drive they are. No lurching from weak engine mounts, no changing down a couple of gears to perform a lane change when traffic has bunched up. Just wonderful. I didn't get it from a Tesla dealer, but a third party dealer (in this case, it was a Vauxhall dealer).

Handanoreene 2026-02-26 08:35

coffeeoverlatte 2026-02-26 08:38

I just did. Rationale: I wanted the old style model Y (no lightbar but with stalks). Therefore needed 2024. Since I plan on extending the warranty, I needed to buy it before 2028. Therefore it needs to happen with 2 yrs. With depreciation factored in, found one with 34k km, at 47,000 with hw4.

Just_Newspaper6145 2026-02-26 08:43

I'd only buy a used tesla, it's much cheaper. (I did)

kaynpayn 2026-02-26 08:45

Got to get a good deal for used though. I almost bought a model y AWD from 2023 with about 40k km recently that looked like a really good deal. It looked mint but paid for a car report to find out it had an ugly crash in another country before. No records on Tesla for having been fixed so you don't know who or how it was fixed. On a poor job, there's higher risk of water ingress, cutting costs, etc. Decided against it and also decided I prefer to go with a new one, even if I have to pay a bit more and go with the standard version to still be within my budget. It's about 3-5k difference and will get hit with depreciation but I know no one fucked around with it before, it's the newer model and will have the full time warranty directly from Tesla.

TapiocaFish 2026-02-26 08:48

By checking the odometer screen that will tell you its hw4. Side cams also have a red tint. Only late 23 MYs have possibility of HW4.

MeasurementMother579 2026-02-26 08:56

I did and don't regret it. A year ago I purchased a Model 3 with 32k miles on it. Was substantially less money than buying new at the time.

IGNORED34 2026-02-26 09:30

Yes, because autopilot

somethingClever246 2026-02-26 10:41

I think the best play is to get a 1 to 2-year-old Tesla with low miles because depreciation in the first year is very high. You could get a 1 to 2-year-old Tesla for $20,000 less than you'd pay new and there are plenty of cars that still look new with 20,000 mi on them

hotdogsrnice 2026-02-26 11:30

I would only buy a used Tesla, far less concerns used then ICE vehicles. There is no reason to take the depreciation hit. My current is a 105k$ new 2023 S with fsd that I bought 7 months after its manufacturing date with 10k miles on it for $62k.

FunCutlet67 2026-02-26 11:40

If you don’t mind sharing, what’s maintenance been like for your car? How many more miles do you think it could last?

No_Faithlessness_122 2026-02-26 11:43

Yes. My Tesla M3 is over 6 years old and still drives the same as the day I got it. Reduced range is barely noticeable. Gotta be well under 10% battery degradation.

mbfos 2026-02-26 13:12

Don’t buy the ones that people have supermarket electricity in. /s

Straight-Sail6689 2026-02-26 14:02

I just bought a 2024 Tesla Model Y Performance (white seats) with 17,450 miles for $39,995. The car was in like new condition. Clean CarFax. Car has over two years of warranty left. I saved almost $20K compared to the new MYP. I charge at home with a level 2 charger. Best car I’ve ever owned.

Straight-Sail6689 2026-02-26 14:06

Model Y vehicles built after June 2023 will have HW4.

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-26 14:08

if it says full self driving computer 4 does that mean fsd is already bough?

Comprehensive_Road66 2026-02-26 14:31

That’s the only way I’d buy. I’m not taking that huge depreciation

JDeLiRiOuS129 2026-02-26 14:36

I did. Best decision I made. I will never buy an EV new. I saw my friend buy a brand new lucid and he lost basically half the cars value (car was over $100k brand new) in 2 years of owning it.

Ornery_Climate1056 2026-02-26 14:44

Dude, I still have autosteer on my 2026 MY and it does not "drive itself"....that's delusional. What year Tesla model are you driving? They're not removing it from existing cars, so you should still be good. And you do realize that Autosteer never got beyond beta release, i.e., it was never ready for prime time.....and only someone who has never actually used it and seen "Autosteer (beta)" on their touch screen wouldn't know that.

skspoppa733 2026-02-26 14:45

I can see how that could happen and am glad it all worked out. But at least you didn’t have to spend hours waiting for the finance guy to free up, or deal with him trying to upsell you on clear coat, extended warranties, or a bunch of other garbage you didn’t need, want or ask for, and didn’t have to wait for the salesperson to “go talk to their manager.” 100x out of 100 I’ll take the Tesla buying experience over the traditional dealership model.

Jolly-Armadillo-2572 2026-02-26 15:01

After 3 months of browsing I came to the conclusion the best way to buy a used Tesla is through their website. You get an extra year warranty, I feel you can trust the information on the website, and the delivery process is very easy. Prices are on par with Carvana. Just ordered my 22MY M3 on Monday and now waiting on my delivery window. Pro tip: don't search for a low mileage car like you would with an ICE car. EVs are meant to be driven. Batteries are not meant to sit idle. If you're looking at a car 3-4 years old, you're better off not getting the one under 30k miles. The Tesla battery range estimator on their website I'm told is a reliable source. Good luck!

SubieSTI360 2026-02-26 15:10

yeah, like I said.. if I didn't make a user error it would have been pretty seamless. Agreed, dealerships are terrible.

JJSimon904 2026-02-26 15:13

It has only been to a service center once and it was kind of my fault. The 12 volt battery was getting old and I had been telling myself to proactively replace it for a year but kept forgetting. The 12 volt battery died on a road trip (at 186k miles) and we woke up at a hotel locked out of the car. We had it towed to the nearest service center (on a weekend) and they had us back on the road when they opened back up on Monday. The only other thing I've replaced are the front upper control arms. I did those myself for $150 at 195k miles because the original ball joints started squeaking. Other than that, I put tires on it every 40-50k miles and occasionally remove the frunk to clean out the space between the radiator and AC condenser. That builds up with dirt, leaves and road debris which causes the AC and battery cooling systems to not work well. This car also spent a large portion of its life living down a dirt road so mine gets dirtier than most I imagine. The range has degraded 22% from the original 310 miles so road tripping requires more stops these days but everything works as it should and showing no signs of anything to be worried about. I have no idea how long the car will last. I'd love to see 300k miles on the original motor and battery just to say I did.

Better_Ear_6614 2026-02-26 15:18

Yes. Save on depreciation

a_single_beat 2026-02-26 15:29

100%, if its clean title with no accidents, the initial depreciation is rough. I have seen 2024 Model 3 Performance with 30k miles go for 39k, with the MSRP being 55k. I would say that the depreciation on the base models (Long range rwd) is the lowest out of the bunch, with higher trims (awd/performance) dropping more. Plus, no lane centering on new ones is a deal breaker. I got lucky and got my new one before they changed it and got the tax credit. The only time I would buy new is if you really want to start with a new car, new warranty, and maybe better build quality as it keeps improving, and own it for a very long time.

Broad_Bodybuilder_94 2026-02-26 15:36

How much did you buy it for?

jrabr 2026-02-26 15:40

I bought my 2023 model Y used. It had just under 16k miles on it and it was previously a leased vehicle. Final price after tax and all was $34k. I made sure it had HW4 as well AND the previous owner left the mobile charger with the car!! I have no regrets it’s the best car I’ve driven.

globesdustbin 2026-02-26 15:42

I bought used because it fit my budget and new did not.

globesdustbin 2026-02-26 15:43

No, that just means the technology is HW4.

Low-Difficulty7169 2026-02-26 15:48

I bought a used 2021 model 3 LR with 30k miles on it for $21k in 2025. The owner kept it in excellent condition inside and out. I didn't run a battery health check but seems to be at least 95%+. I live in Michigan. 1 month into owning it, the parking break makes a loud squeak sound when it actuates. This happens when i put the car in park or reverse. 4 months into owning it, if the car has been sitting for 8+ hours in the cold, there's a loud bangish sound that comes from the wheels. It's my breaks/rotors breaking free from one another because they're dirty and need to be replaced. Also, my car has been at the tesla dealership three times now for the same issue. The rearview camera will go unavailable. They replaced the camera and the harness citing corrosion or wear/tear. It's still at the dealership because that didn't fix the issue. The car is still at Tesla because they're having a hard time figuring out what's wrong. They think it could be my entire right side harness assembly. Tesla reimbursed me fully for the initial repair. All this to say, I don't regret buying this car. The break issue is completely normal. The parking break needs to be lubricated, and the breaks/rotors need to be replaced. As for the camera issue, I don't think that's because it's a "used" car. I'll update my comment once Tesla figures it out but i think its just an unlucky thing. Maybe there's rodent damage on the wiring harness. Oh and for shits and giggles, last weeks trade in value from tesla is $17.5k.

Trynastaynice 2026-02-26 16:03

I did. I've had it for 6 months. It's still under warranty. I love it

True-Performance-351 2026-02-26 16:27

Bought one. Super happy with how much car I got for what little I paid. Also the warranties are nice and they will fix any imperfections after delivery for a year.

bnnybtch 2026-02-26 16:31

I had a 2023 lexus and it had adaptive cruise control, where it sped up and slowed down (not as intelligently as tesla) and sort of stayed between the lines. nothing like tesla where I just had to have a finger on the wheel and it curved around the bends for me… is the new lane keep basically adaptive cruise control?

Gham_ 2026-02-26 16:49

Bought a 2022 37k km model 3 recently. For me it was the sweet spot between still being new but for much cheaper than actually being new. Still has another 3 year battery warranty and a 1 year general warranty from Tesla.

JJSimon904 2026-02-26 17:09

Too much. At the time it was a good deal at $44k compared to new, but not long after I bought it, Tesla dropped their prices and I could have got a new one for almost the same price. I'm glad though because the 2021-ish models had some bad batches of batteries. The 2018s seem to have the best luck with batteries lasting.

comscistudent11 2026-02-26 18:45

I’ll be in the market for a used Tesla in May, and I’ve really only heard good stories about buying used ones, as long as they’re not incredibly high mileage. Also, you can find used teslas that have FSD included. Just see if there’s a picture of the software section that says “Full Self Driving” and then “Included Package” under it. Other advice is to do your research about battery health test, degradation, service questions, etc. Many dealerships may not be able to answer these questions without some research, so just be diligent.

JayneDough25 2026-02-26 19:11

Hey any advice? I’m shopping a used 2024 M3P. Should I be looking for anything in particular on the software screen?

Billios996 2026-02-26 19:14

I did, and I would do it again. Bought it through the Tesla CPO program. Same process as buying new. I would probably not buy outside of Tesla CPO, I fear Tesla would not honor warranty.

Traditional_Ask262 2026-02-26 19:20

I bought a used 2020 Model Y AWD for $19.4K last summer as soon as I heard the EV credits were going away. I only buy used cars and then I run them into the ground and replace them with another used car. The Tesla replaced a 2007 Toyota Prius with almost 200K miles on it.

DoctorDividend 2026-02-26 19:22

I bought used, 4 yrs old with 65% markdown from original price, 0 issues and best car I have ever owned over past 7 years

joenationwide 2026-02-26 19:55

I love my used 2022 Tesla Model Y Performance. Paid just under $30k with 49,500 miles. Still have the powertrain warranty until 2029 and 150000 miles I think. It has the Ryzen chip, but still has HW3. My buddy just ordered a new 2026 MYP and it cost him $60k, more than double what I paid. To me, that extra bit of newness isn't worth 2x the cost.

Accomplished_Sky_899 2026-02-26 20:10

I’m have a fear of buying one that’s not from Tesla. How did you do it without much worry?

NonSequitur305 2026-02-26 20:56

Yes. Why? To keep the money out of Elon’s filthy hands.

FunCutlet67 2026-02-26 21:08

Appreciate the detailed reply, thank you!

VanderCooks 2026-02-26 21:10

What were the things you looked for when you inspected them in person? What made you pass?

Slight_Yard_7751 2026-02-26 22:01

I got a 2025 Model 3 from Tesla with 6k miles, blue, LR awd for 42k with a 4.5 yr warranty (it was 6 months old). The utility company gave me 4k back for buying a used EV too. In So Cal every dealer publishes low prices but puts all sorts of crap on them to increase the cost 4-10k from what they advertise. The only real prices are private party, CarMax and Carvana. Check out Tesla's used inventory. Mine was shipped 1500 miles for 1k.

Flawedlogic41 2026-02-26 22:01

How much did your battery depreciate? I also bought a used 2022 m3 lr but wanted to know

little_nipas 2026-02-26 22:50

Originally it had 90% battery health. I calibrated it soon after and I think it was just constantly kept at 100% because it’s been at 72% battery health since. But that is fine with me. Basically almost have a 2022 standard range at that point.

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-26 22:57

thank you! i was in the market for a low mile model y because i’ve seen that repairs after warranty are pretty expensive. but thank you this helped a lot

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-26 22:59

i’m just worried if i get one with high milage and something breaks after warranty i’m screwed

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-26 23:02

aw man that sucks! i’m assuming it’s all going thru warranty?

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-26 23:02

how many miles did you purchase at?

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-26 23:03

thank you 🙏🏽

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-26 23:04

from the comments i’m getting i believe hardware 4 is what you want to be looking at

Trynastaynice 2026-02-26 23:46

34k

Flawedlogic41 2026-02-27 00:42

Standard range and you get the AWD speakers. I bought mine at 83% depreciation and I noticed newer cars do hit depreciation faster if they supercharge constantly.

passiveMelon1 2026-02-27 00:47

No, I want maximum battery warranty

little_nipas 2026-02-27 00:53

Yeah AWD, speakers, fog lights, interior lights, acceleration etc. I’d do it all over again tbh because hertz paid $58k for it before taxes.

FineByG 2026-02-27 01:02

Brand New 2024 MYLR AWD. White pearl, 20” wheels, tow hitch in August ‘24. Hit me hard. Paid $65k. Still recovering as I look at new Tesla’s😭

FineByG 2026-02-27 01:08

2018’s have a known charger component issue. Tesla quoted me $2800 to fix it (their known issue). That was after I already spent $400 replacing the upper arms. I purchased used in October ‘23 for $29k with 30k miles. I have since moved on from that one!

Low-Difficulty7169 2026-02-27 01:24

Nope none of it was under warranty. So today Tesla called and said I had a kinked wire harness that was attached to the inside camera and the windshield wipers. Idk lol.. Apparently from vibration, bumps, etc that can happen. I got super unlucky i guess. They refunded the first visit completely and only charged $175 for this last visit.

JJSimon904 2026-02-27 01:26

Fortunately I didn't have that issue..knock on wood. Charging has never been an issue for me. Im probably approaching a thousand charging sessions at the superchargers given that I supercharged daily for a couple years before installing the wall connector. My commute was 150 miles a day and lived in the boonies so I always had to have enough charge to get back to town. 🤣 Throw in hundreds more supercharging sessions on road trips too. I've only been stranded once at a supercharger so I walked somewhere to get dinner and by the time I got back to the car, the Tesla service people had showed up to fix the supercharger.

Herroo-There 2026-02-27 01:41

yooo what kind of maintenance have you done on your model 3? assuming just oil & coolant change? 239k is impressive. are you still on the original drive units?

DR_Manhattan0x1 2026-02-27 02:06

I love my Tesla Model Y. Had it for 4 years now. Just not happy with Tesla opening the Supercharger Network to all manufacturers recently. I depend on them and now there’s lines and blockage due to charging ports being in different sides of vehicles. I would say this much. If you have ways to charge at home than go for it.

JJSimon904 2026-02-27 02:12

Only maintenance was the 12 volt battery when it died on a road trip at 186k miles and I replaced the upper control arms myself for $150 when they started squeaking at 195k miles. Everything else is all original. What is this oil and coolant change you speak of? 🤣

gre-0021 2026-02-27 02:34

Yes absolutely, they depreciate by like 30-40% in the first 2 years. Even if you want a newer model year, just find one with 5-10k miles and you’ll get 20% off sticker price for what is essentially a new car. Plus you’ll still have the 50k mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and 10 year/120k mile battery/drive unit warranty.

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-27 02:38

doing so by tesla or ?

gre-0021 2026-02-27 02:40

Nah I looked all over the country and used about 7 different websites. I ended up going to IQ Autos in Marietta, GA. Their inventory is 98% Teslas so they know what they’re doing plus they have about 6 wall connector chargers so my car was ready to go. And even better, they charge just a $500 fee so it’s the price you see plus $500 and no extra bs fees. It was a great experience, I just had to drive 11 hours from Missouri

Able_Problem_4787 2026-02-27 03:04

i’m assuming that 11 hour drive was worth it😅 i’m gonna do my research and see if there is any dealer like that here in cali. Btw which model did you pick up and how many miles ?

PurpleIris3 2026-02-27 03:49

I did. I love it. It’s a 2022 Y. Still no problems except the one I created when I backed into a parking garage column!

apoirier594 2026-02-27 14:09

What’s the difference between

Lostnode7 2026-02-27 16:28

I wouldn't if I didn't have a spot to charge every night.

Lostnode7 2026-02-27 16:31

Just bought a 22 model S plaid for $49, 000 with 50,000 miles. I wouldn't have bought it if they were still holding their value just way too much money. . Lucky me buy used.

newstudent_here 2026-02-27 17:08

FSD will do all the driving, changing lanes, avoiding obstacles, braking, stopping, accelerating, parking, navigation, etc. Autopilot is basically smarter cruise control. FSD gets constant updates (for HW4 owners). Autopilot does not.

WunderPeach 2026-02-27 18:11

Have 2 bought used!

firefish45 2026-02-28 00:06

WTF? They took that out of the package for new ones? My 2026 Model Y came with it.

firefish45 2026-02-28 00:13

Personally? F no. Why? BC the battery is the most wearable and most expensive piece of hardware to replace; and even when you replace it, you can't buy a new battery; only refurbished. Only a new Tesla comes with a fresh new battery. So NO

anonymousidiotsearch 2026-02-28 02:57

I bought mine used after a bunch of research into models, performance, where buying used gave the most benefit, and battery health on model years. Ultimately got a 2019 model 3 performance with 52k miles. It’s been absolutely great with 0 issues

brucebrowde 2026-02-28 06:57

You bought through Tesla pre-owned program or another dealership? Asking because I thought Tesla doesn't allow you do look at the car, basically buy blindly and what you get is what you get.

TurboFuzzy37 2026-02-28 11:41

Try comma4

Annual_Grass538 2026-02-28 14:41

Bought through a dealership. We put the deposit down before seeing it since it was 8 hours away but again there were no surprises when my husband got down there.

DustyConditioner 2026-02-28 18:39

I just picked up a 2022 M3 AWD from Tesla with 35k miles for )24k

theotherharper 2026-03-01 03:35

They really hold their value compared to other EVs. Better bargains with those. Also the CCS charging network is getting quite good, but you can't use it with a Tesla. Well, you can with an adapter, but it breaks the Tesla family integration because you'll have to use a 3rd party navigation app like ABetterRoutePlanner.com, and it won't precondition.

For me I would never…. Not electric car at least, you have no idea what previous owner did but that’s just me

Yes. I recently bought a 2022 Model Y Performance with FSD included. 3.5 years ago the original owner paid more than $80k. I paid $28k. That's why I buy used.

Look at the software screen. I will say "Full Self Driving Computer 4".

Wow nice! How much did you pay for it? Why did you pick 24 over 23?

Paid $43,200 for the 2024 M3P. I was set on a 2023 for around 32K but decided to make the leap. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the 2023 would still be great. But once I researched the differences.. it was no contest (for me). It is total refresh. Changed front bumper, wheels, added front lip and carbon fiber spoiler (not sure if that one was on the 23).. Interior is completely updated. Dashboard doesn't have that faux wood BS, added ambient lighting, new sportier seats.. Then HW4 vs HW3 is apparently a big deal (at least for FSD, which I use a lot).... I blew my budget apart, but was buying straight out so not dealing with 8% financing. I'm very happy with my decision. It's a beautiful car and it will serve me well for a long time :)

I agree. I’m deciding between the two and the 2024 is catching my eye. I’ll probably get the standard non long range one which is 260 miles. Do you think that should be enough for road trips with super charging? I have chargers at work. Are there other big differences between the 2024 premium and standard?

SubieSTI360 2026-03-08 01:38

Can't help you much on that one. I only looked at M3P's.. are you sure about that range? Mine is supposed to get 292.. either way. I would say the range estimates are generous (although it is cold here which effects range.. and also I'm blasting 0-60's all the time. Lol).. I would say you really need to investigate the supercharger situation. I didn't and there is only ONE Within 30 minutes. I'm getting a home charger installed this weekend so it won't be a situation any more. From what I've read. Trips are pretty ok. The car maps your trip around chargers.
