A case against reinventing the wheel

kungfuninjajedi | 2026-02-25 06:43 | 79 views

This is the steering wheel from 2018 model S. Actually this is the same wheel used from the beginning until 2021 refresh. Perfect size, perfect material mix of leather and aluminum, and just right amount of control functions on it. Why they have to ruin it is beyond me.

Money

Aside from the materials mainly the real leather, I prefer the newer designs on s/x as well as the 3/y

Super_consultant 2026-02-25 06:59

I liked the feeling of the switches from that generation - but they were straight out of Mercedes Benz’s parts bin (stalks, window switches).  Model S/X wheel buttons suck, but only because they don’t physically click the way 3/Y do. Absolutely stupid they did not update the wheel for this past “refresh”. All they did was update the camera icon.

Yah, I am in agreement with you. 2025 yoke and I like the feel so much more that I ordered the new yoke (that’s near replica) for older S’ retrofit for my 2018 S. Not that I even drive my 2018 much now, but on the rare occasions, I can’t help feeling the oem wheel is so fat and cumbersome.

ThottyThanos 2026-02-25 07:07

Ive had loners that had this wheel it always felt clunky creeky and the buttons feel so bad to scroll hated driving it

alb92 2026-02-25 07:41

There is always going to be some bias towards what you are used to. I daily drive a 2017 model X and a 2021 model 3. I much prefer the model 3 wheel. The model 3 is being replaced shortly by a 2026 model 3, so, I'll reserve my judgement for a bit. Have driven a newer model 3, and don't love the blinker buttons, but that won't be an issue on my car.

melvladimir 2026-02-25 07:56

The same. Having 2022 M3 - this is the best! And I like how it feels, materials.

Everyone praises 100-year old Mercedes for quality, but when Tesla can make better quality buttons in-house it makes me wonder where the bar is set.

I like having the stalks. Especially the dedicated autopilot stalk.

LOLRicochet 2026-02-25 11:48

I agree, as does my wife. I hate the yoke and the wheel on the Y is noticeably smaller and doesn’t have the same feel of quality.

districtcurrent 2026-02-25 14:06

What’s a steering wheel?

Annual_Hippo_1107 2026-02-25 15:07

My only complaint for the newer ones is the touch buttons for the turn signals. I don’t like the way that is implemented. I’ve only dealt with it on loaners so not enough time to get used to it but I wasn’t a fan. I didn’t mind the yoke on the newer S or whatever the thing in the CT is. The wheel in my 2020 S is fine. The only change I’d make is with the scroll wheels. They are too difficult to click without scrolling. Not sure what the fix would be but that messes me up. The buttons are kinda cheap feeling but they work fine so I’m not too concerned.

RicoViking9000 2026-02-25 18:08

doesn’t the 2026 3 get its stalk back

waznpride 2026-02-25 18:19

I'm still getting used to touch screen drive shifting. The first few days I briefly went in reverse when I should have been going forward. It doesn't help that with the stalk, up is reverse, down is drive. Also haven't tried the auto shift yet. I'm weary of it functioning correctly in niche events.

daneasaur 2026-02-25 18:31

I love the wheel on my 2025 model 3. Everyone has different opinions.

DAaaMan64 2026-02-25 19:08

Steer by wire (non linear steering input) is safer and more accessible in several ways.

hatefulevo 2026-02-25 19:53

It did, it can also be fitted on the 2024-2025 highlands for 650 iirc

L064N 2026-02-25 20:36

The wheel has been updated at least twice since 2021, and you can click the wheel buttons just like 3/y. I have a 2021 plaid and my roommate has a 2024 model y so I experience this frequently

Super_consultant 2026-02-25 21:18

The 3/Y literally click down vs. using pure haptic feedback. The S/Y rely solely on haptic feedback. I’m an owner, so I know too.

amoeba1126 2026-02-25 22:36

Auto shift is great 90% of the time. The 10% when it doesn't work is a complete PITA. Situations like that are a big part of why China recently passed regulations to force companies like Tesla to move critical features away from the touchscreen and back to tactile, physical buttons. What a world we live in, where China is the voice of reason for sensible car UI design.

Malacasts 2026-02-25 23:01

Stalks to quickly reverse when an idiot pulls out, or reverses toward you is a life saver. Especially in my city with the highest accident rates

waznpride 2026-02-26 00:18

Ok I'll give it a try and see how it goes. I'd prefer a stalk again because I can shift so much faster that way! Super fast 3-point turns!

alb92 2026-02-26 00:20

That's why I said it won't be an issue for me. As in I've tried it without, that is the only thing that I don't like, but my car will have the stalk.

amoeba1126 2026-02-26 00:25

I prefer the stalk as well and have one by way of the Enhance Auto S3XY stalks for when Auto Shift messes up.

SuperSayainSkincare 2026-02-26 00:51

As a new Highland user, getting used to the stalkless design was hard at first but thx to autoshift I dont miss it at all. The only weird thing thats worse is making weird turns or parallel parking having to touch the screen multiple times.

10xMaker 2026-02-26 02:14

To reduce cost, perhaps?

Livesai 2026-02-26 02:26

Agree, Yoke is my favorite to drive with and to use with FSD. People hate change, but once they try it out for a bit, it will grow on them. It's just human nature. Especially the older generation. Same with stalk, I don't have to think about reversing out when my car already knows I'm about to reverse out.

LurkerWithAnAccount 2026-02-26 02:41

Agreed, my 2017 S wheel felt as big as a bus after our Model Y. To each one’s own.

alb92 2026-02-26 04:34

Yeah, that's my biggest issue as well.

ZealousidealDraw4075 2026-02-27 08:54

I do like the original model 3 wheel better Looks cleaner no buttons except the scroll wheels real leather. Love it

Automatic_Violinist4 2026-03-02 01:26

This British lady I spoke with line ago is still living in my head because she turned up her nose on American English. She said that that thing you call a "blinker" is an "indicator". She was not wrong, but I still wanted to say F U and your Queens English lol
