FYI, the $250 is NOT a deposit. It is an order processing fee, and isn’t refundable.

You can charge back, I have done it successfully, and many others. And no, it doesn't block you from Tesla you can buy it again later.

That’s not what’s being asked here though. You can charge back basically everything.

Yeah, but Tesla doesn't even fight it. They don't care. You don't lose the deposit unless you also don't care.
You lose nothing by cancelling if you just do the right things.

It is a deposit because it goes towards the price of the car, it’s just not refundable.
Edit: seems they changed this from prior years and it’s a fee now

It doesn’t appear to be a deposit. It’s in addition to the price of the car.

They did fight mine. The credit card company initially side with Tesla. All Tesla did was send the order agreement where it says that they can liquidate the order fee. But I reopened the case, and argued that in my state they legally have to prove any damages to keep that $500 “order fee” (which is really a deposit they legally can’t keep) on a used inventory vehicle. They didn’t fight it that time and I was credited back.

Read your purchase agreement. It’s not a deposit, it’s an additional charge.

You should have the financing info 30 minutes after you pay the $250 fee online. Right after you pay the fee, you get info from Tesla to continue the order process on the phone app. One of the steps is credit check for financing the 0.99%. I put in my info and less than 10 seconds later, the app showed updated info and to confirm the 0.99%. There is small print that says this is all pending and can be different upon purchase but that's just boiler plate wording I believe.

No one is rushing you. Tesla promos come and go. It sounds like you’re not actually ready…so why not wait?

I’ve purchased 3 teslas and all of them had the order fee go towards the price. I just checked my documents. It doesn’t appear as credit until the final document.

Everyone values the worth of a dollar differently I guess, no matter how financially comfortable you are

1 cash, 2 financed. Doesn't matter. I could afford to pay for all of them cash, and I would still care about losing my $250.

It’s a credit there, because you paid the fee already on your credit card when you placed your order. It most definitely is a fee. Do the math and add the numbers.

I see, it looks like my first two purchases (2018 & 2020) actually had a $500 deposit labeled as deposit, but then for 2024 it changed to $250 fee.

For me, In October 2020, it was $100, and called an “order fee”. It was an additional charge, paid at order time. It was included in the price of the vehicle. It was then shown as a credit already paid on my finance documents.

I work for Tesla, the $250 is a fee not a deposit towards your purchase
