How is AI5 going to be in cars 2H 2027 and use 144gb of high-speed memory when there is a global memory shortage?

phantomchess | 2026-02-20 03:40 | 32 views

I was planning to wait for thr next ai5 hardware next year to purchase new car, but how are they going to produce hundreds of thousands of these when memory is in major shortage? Who else thinks this will be delayed until 2028 and they come out with a stop-gap?

At least until 2028. Still alot to get out of AI4

They'll claim... I mean he will claim that 4.5 is good enough until it won't be.

Pretty sure the richest guy in the world with all Of the space ,ai , and top car manufacturer with top gov clearance an contacts will not have an issue getting priority contracts lol

turns2stone 2026-02-20 04:13

No stop-gap, just delayed. AI4 still well ahead of anything that will be on sale in 2027-2028.

You got that right captain !!! Exactly what he will say.

Cerebrin 2026-02-20 05:35

I don’t think that it will be an issue. You can still buy memory albeit at a higher price which will be paid for by whoever purchases the hw5 vehicles. Also, is samsung going to make nand/dram/hbm in Arizona?

An iPhone 17 has 12GB of high speed ram (not sure how it compares to what Tesla would want). So each Tesla would need the equivalent of about 16 iPhones worth of memory. I can’t find how many pro models were sold but this is just general numbers so whatever. Tesla sold 1.6 million cars in 2025, so let’s say they sell 2 million in 2027 that would be about 32 million iPhones worth of ram. It’s not nothing, but if Tim Apple can get that much ram then Tesla should be able to make it work too, especially since a Tesla is at least twice as expensive as 16 iPhones.

If the car works for you now I’d get it. Sure AI5 will come at some point but who actually knows when and at what price point? AI4 is brilliant

There's a very good chance that ALL of the HW5 chips will go to Cybercab, Semi and Optimus. Autonomy will get AI5 far before consumer vehicle purchases. You could be waiting forever for a MY with anything other than HW4. The good news is that HW4 is fantastic!

mongolian_horsecock 2026-02-20 13:16

That's like 5000$ of RAM in today's prices if he gets 3gb GDDR7 modules lol. Was like 1000-1500 pre ram craze.

phantomchess 2026-02-20 13:23

That was also my point. The price increase will not be feasible even if they can get a contract for the modules. They said the speed of the memory will be like 3x higher which means newer tech and higher price. Only way they would be able to cut costs would be to use substantially less memory.

endfossilfuel 2026-02-20 14:16

to be fair, HW3 will probably still be ahead of anything on sale in 2027-2028 too.

mongolian_horsecock 2026-02-20 14:52

Yeah I feel kind by the time ai5 comes out the ram craze will be over though. But that's anyone's guess. But yeah definitely not a tenable price

phantomchess 2026-02-20 15:24

The memory in smartphones is not the high-end and high density modules they will be using in the AI5 hardware. I will wait another 5-6 months and see if any new announcements or stop-gap hardware comes out.

GoSh4rks 2026-02-20 16:20

GB or Gb?

Meanee 2026-02-20 16:26

Memory crisis is due to all the AI companies buying up memory. Guess xAI can buy memory for Tesla? Also you are thinking in retail price amount. When Tesla shows up at some fab, and tells them "We need eleventy gazillion chips" they will not be paying retail prices.

Austinswill 2026-02-21 09:01

This may be a dumb question... But why would they need super fast RAM? Even with slower ram these things are calculating way faster than human reaction times. The hold up seems to be the actual "code" (I know not code in traditional terms) It seems to me that as the AI grows in refinement things should get better sans more powerful processing. I also realize we have not really seen things go this way. but Innovation is a thing and it feels to me like there is improvements to be made without needing ever increasing memory access speed.

phantomchess 2026-02-21 13:09

They are not just using it for cars. It's being used for optimus and dojo as well. It's designed for high bandwidth memory

Tradetheday2093 2026-02-21 18:33

Don’t worry about it. By that time your brain would be downloaded into memory and we will live in virtual world. No need to drive.

rasin1601 2026-02-24 14:11

Considering the ongoing liability risk, I would hope/expect HW5 will be designed to physically fit the HW4 mounting and connector spec.
