Keep forgetting key card for valet. Hide card in faraday bag in car an ok idea?

fatguybike | 2026-02-18 12:58 | 14 views

We have to travel into a big city often which means we have to use a parking garage and valet to park the car. I’ve forgotten the key card 3x now. Would it be smart to hide a key card in the vehicle inside of an faraday bag? I’m assuming the faraday bag would block the rfid from the card so it would loc upon walking away and some rando wouldn’t be able to drive it if the just got into the car if it was left open. Thoughts on this? Good spot to hide it?

I keep it in the glovebox with a pin

The_Judacious 2026-02-18 13:02

The range on the RFID card is pretty limited, you need direct contact with the driver door pillar and center counsel so I’d say it would be pretty safe if not overkill in a faraday bag.

AngleFun1664 2026-02-18 13:03

Key card doesn’t do long distance rfid, it needs to touch the correct spot to start the car. Just put the key card in the glovebox and you should be fine. I’d recommend you enable PIN to drive if you do this though because you effectively have the key locked inside the car. If someone breaks in they can steal the car pretty easily.

superduperhosts 2026-02-18 13:04

do you have a wallet?

Going2beBANNEDanyway 2026-02-18 13:09

Lock it away in glove box. You don’t need to put it in bag. Mine goes in my wallet. As you might need it to get into car if/when app fails.

Good-Marionberry6918 2026-02-18 13:11

Yeah that’s where I keep mine with no issues.

jxl180 2026-02-18 13:17

The point of the keycard isn’t exclusively for valet. It’s if your phone dies or the app fails. It’s a backup. It never leaves my wallet, ever.

Torczyner 2026-02-18 13:20

Read the manual. The card won't unlock the car unless on the door and won't drive the car unless on the spot for it. Also where do you keep credit cards? Put the card there.

InstantMartian84 2026-02-18 13:24

It might be pretty specific to me, but I spend a good amount of time places without cell or internet service, sometimes for a few days at a time. The app works most of the time, but the key card has saved my butt a few times over the past five years.

Krunk83 2026-02-18 13:26

What if you get locked out?

BamBamAdMan 2026-02-18 13:28

Just keep the card in your wallet. If you lose your phone or if the phone dies you’ll still be able to get into your car.

reddituser4049 2026-02-18 13:29

Apple Watch Ultra has been great. No issues in 6 years of not carrying my keycard.

Skatrdie0 2026-02-18 13:29

Yeah that should be fine. You only need internet service if you're outside of Bluetooth range of the car. When you're near the car it's using Bluetooth via your phone. So when I have spotty coverage when I go hiking I always make sure to lock my vehicle via the app before I walk away because I can't rely on the app with spotty signal when I'm out of range of the car

Neo692 2026-02-18 13:34

second key card at home, remote unlock via app are two fallback options that are enough for me

newreconstruction 2026-02-18 13:36

The card is not a proximity long-range things like your phone. It is safe to keep it in the car, it only works if properly place right to the reader.

fryrpc 2026-02-18 13:37

1 in house filing cabinet 1 in my wallet as a backup for my phone 1 in the locked glovebox that I can give to valet / garage

fatguybike 2026-02-18 13:37

This is good move! Thanks

fatguybike 2026-02-18 13:39

Yes, but forgot my wallet this AM which this time had the key in it! 🤣 that’s what spurred this post. I said last time I won’t forget my wallet so I’ll put the key in there! Well… here we are.

fatguybike 2026-02-18 13:40

AWU3 is my backup too. Just can’t leave it with valet! 🤣

goodvibezone 2026-02-18 13:46

Not sure anyone can help you lol

_SwatKats 2026-02-18 13:51

get a 💍key .. there are few sites which sell them.

Krunk83 2026-02-18 13:55

But when you're out and your phone app randomly disconnects or your phone dies?

ed25ca 2026-02-18 13:55

I keep it in my wallet.

shinchan1988 2026-02-18 13:56

Side question. I lost both my key cards, would i be able to setup new one if i order from tesla?

Seriously_2Exhausted 2026-02-18 13:59

I just use valet mode, and give them the 4 digit code

Medium_Confusion_ 2026-02-18 14:02

IDK about him but personally my phone rarely fully dies. If I know I need to get in my car later and my battery is low I just keep it on low power mode and don't use it. I also have an apple watch as a backup in the rare instance my phone dies or I lost my phone.

Neo692 2026-02-18 14:03

I check the phone battery and stop using it when it gets low.

Oh-well100 2026-02-18 14:04

Wallet

JawnDoh 2026-02-18 14:05

I believe they had a brief app outage a year or two ago where if you didn’t have the card you couldn’t open the car. Think it only lasted an hour or so but it is a possibility

RFID sleeve and in your wallet.

PermanentUsername101 2026-02-18 14:45

I never carry a keycard. I leave one in the glovebox with a pin to open. There are so many other ways to open it if something were to happen to my phone. Apple Watch, call my wife and have her unlock, 2nd keycard at home, down load the app on literally any device and unlock, log in to Tessie via Web Browser. Not concerned at all.

Faile-Bashere 2026-02-18 14:55

I don’t leave my house without my wallet and my phone. Ever.

LordFly88 2026-02-18 15:11

I personally wouldn't leave the keys to my car IN my car. Odds are probably low of it ever being stolen, but if it happens and you're insurance finds out the keys were in it, coverage might be questionable.

AltruisticPapaya1415 2026-02-18 15:13

Leave it in the glovebox with the glovebox pin.

LordFly88 2026-02-18 15:13

Just always leave your wallet in the car. And set the car to never lock, that way if you're phone dies, you can easily access the key card and your wallet! /s

NurseDave8 2026-02-18 15:16

Yes, you just pair it while in the car

Normal_Choice9322 2026-02-18 15:22

Nah. I'd rather deal with forgotten wallet than a key permanently in the vehicle

fatguybike 2026-02-18 15:22

Agreed 🤣

fatguybike 2026-02-18 15:23

You still need the card.

ulmersapiens 2026-02-18 15:46

Your problem is not the key card.

Ok-Shake5152 2026-02-18 15:46

1. Get 4 pucks 2. Use jack to raise the car 3. Remove undercarriage fasteners to loosen shield 4. Securely duct tape the Tesla card to the inside of the shield 5. Put shield back and lower the car. Card is now secure To start the car 1. Get a rfid cable with 2 suction cups at each end 2. Crawl under the car and attach 1 end 3. Crawl out and attach other end to B-pillar to unlock the car 4. Get inside the car and lower window 5. Reach out and remove cup fromBb-Pillar and attach to center console to start car Drive safely 😂

shardil 2026-02-18 16:06

Never thought of it before but just realized as I was reading the comments that my wife carries her key card in her purse and leaves her purse often in the car and walks away. The car locks automatically and stays locked until she walks back to her car with her phone. This makes me think in ur case the key card can be left in the glove compartment until needed ! I guess 👀

Jaws12 2026-02-18 16:07

I would like to see a valet’s face when you take off the ring and drop it in their hand. 😂

rupeshjoy852 2026-02-18 16:09

Others have said it already, but it's a good idea to keep on with you at all times. I have one and my wife has one in her purse. You never know when your phone dies on your. Or if you dropped it in water or some other accident. It's easier to have your key card on you than having to wait for your phone to work.

Low_Site_5877 2026-02-18 16:11

Sounds like you need an air tag, tile, or other device that notifies you when you leave things behind.

EatMeerkats 2026-02-18 16:11

The car can still be stolen if someone breaks the window, unless you set a PIN to drive.

_SwatKats 2026-02-18 16:11

he will wear it until the car is collected 😂

EatMeerkats 2026-02-18 16:13

Set PIN to drive and then it doesn't really matter. The window will already be broken by the time they reach the key card.

Normal_Choice9322 2026-02-18 16:14

I'm not setting a pin to drive unless I am out of my normal routine

mrandr01d 2026-02-18 16:14

That doesn't make sense (and it would be insane)... The phone key is Bluetooth based, there shouldn't be any remote dependencies.

mrandr01d 2026-02-18 16:16

I'd never leave the key inside like that. Someone could do a range extender attack on my phone, and then once they get into the car they now have near permanent full access. Not good. Mine goes in my wallet, with my driver's license.

mrandr01d 2026-02-18 16:16

If you're forgetting your driver's license, you have bigger problems.

LurkyRabbit 2026-02-18 16:23

If it's a fob then don't keep it in your car. If it's a key card, it's totally fine just in your glove compartment...

Jayman_007 2026-02-18 16:25

I keep mine locked in the glove box (with pin). I also have pin to drive enabled. The key card is only registered as in the car if it's on the sensor.

Seriously_2Exhausted 2026-02-18 16:25

The last ones I used didn't, I gave a 4 digit code, and remote started. Then when I retrieved the vehicle back same thing. Just used my phone while waiting. Probably easier to use the card, but so easily forgotten.

no-0p 2026-02-18 16:27

We have a Turo fleet of Teslas. All of them have a key card in a Faraday bag in the glove box. Very handy when needed.

fatguybike 2026-02-18 16:30

I found my solution thank you all! Card in glovebox with pin loc on glove box. Easy peasy and smart move. Thank you all!

bluesqueen23 2026-02-18 16:40

Mine stays in a card holder (MagSafe) on my phone.

JawnDoh 2026-02-18 17:11

I mean you say that, and maybe it's changed since, but there have been several occasions in the past where there were app / service issues that lead to this situation: * [September '20](https://www.appviewx.com/blogs/how-a-broken-api-led-to-teslas-entire-network-going-down-locked-out-customers-from-their-cars-and-disrupted-company-wide-operations/) * [November '21](https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2021/nov/20/tesla-app-outage-elon-musk-apologises) * [February '23](https://www.datacenterdynamics.com/en/news/tesla-outage-server-issues-impact-car-and-powerwall-services/) It does now say in the manual that you don't need internet once your phone is paired, so they may have changed how it works in recent years.

ajn63 2026-02-18 17:13

Here’s foolproof way to never forget your keycard: Dissolve the key card in acid to expose the coil of antenna and the microchip. Rinse thoroughly and carefully insert it under the loose skin on the back of your hand. You may feel a slight discomfort for a few days.

InstantMartian84 2026-02-18 17:44

I'm aware it's Bluetooth, and for some reason I was completely unable to get into my vehicle with my phone on least two occasions, and I couldn't remotely unlock without cell or internet service. Admittedly, it's been a few years since that's happened, but why take a chance? In my situation, both me and my vehicle are in an area a couple miles away from cell service with no wifi. If I did not have my key card with me, I would have had a long-ass walk to find enough cell service to do anything.

InstantMartian84 2026-02-18 17:46

I'm glad to hear the Apple watch works. I am not a Apple user and have no plans on becoming one.

NonSequitur305 2026-02-18 17:48

I’m surprised nobody mentioned my solution: hide it in frunk. That way if I ever lose my phone, I can call my wife on someone else’s phone to remotely unlock it. Or if I leave my car somewhere and want someone else to get it (which has never happened), I can unlock the trunk myself and tell them where card is hidden. 🤷

Skatrdie0 2026-02-18 17:57

I was just mentioning without service the car relied solely on Bluetooth via the app. It sounds like you had some flakyness with your Bluetooth connection. I like to mention this because I've seen countless times here that some don't realize the difference of when the phone app is using Bluetooth via network. Some people assume it's all network. I always keep the physical card in my wallet so I'm not advocating for taking any chances. Also if you have an android phone it can use NFC to unlock the vehicle and drive it. You can just turn your phone screen on (doesn't even need to be unlocked) and put it up to the pillar like you would the card key. This has been my main backup when it doesn't unlock on its own every once in a while. Pretty sure it's android exclusive and the NFC feature doesn't work on iPhone. Now I just wish they would start supporting android a little more as they have been prioritizing some extra features for iPhone/I watch users. (I understand why though)

HopefulScarcity9732 2026-02-18 19:05

Also watch as a key is another backup

HopefulScarcity9732 2026-02-18 19:07

A key in the vehicle doesn’t matter at all unless someone is already in vehicle which means they already have a key to unlock it anyway. 6 years ago Tesla would have to ask for the key card to do service and they’d just lock the door and put the card under the floor mat or in the console for pickup. That being said I still think it’s dumb to leave one in the car anyway in case of a window smash

trudat 2026-02-18 19:10

Is valet service a part of your normal routine?

WarningWonderful5264 2026-02-18 20:00

Get a phone wallet case and keep it there

say592 2026-02-18 20:05

I keep one in my glove box. It is NFC, the range is like 4" under the most optimal circumstances. No one is reading that thing when it is in the glove box.

Incorrect_Version 2026-02-18 20:09

I have a keycard holder that has a key ring that I just attach to my house key.

InstantMartian84 2026-02-18 20:27

I had a really terrible experience with an iPhone 2 that included multiple frustrations with the customer service from the "Geniuses" at the Apple Store I had to travel over an hour to get to, three times without resolution. I switched to Android and never looked back. I actually wasn't aware of the NFC Android thing, so I'll have to look into that. Just in case. Thanks!

knightlife 2026-02-18 20:40

You do not need a Faraday bag. I keep mine in the center console for valets.

GoSh4rks 2026-02-18 21:00

You have never needed data on either the car or your phone to unlock the car via the passive phone key. Internet service isn't everywhere. There have been issues in the past with the app, but that's not exactly the same.

audigex 2026-02-18 22:32

You’re overthinking this Put it in the back of your phone case

Legitimate_Ear2913 2026-02-18 23:05

I was not able to do this. I had to have Tesla mobile service come out to make me a new card since I didn't have the original key card to make the new card, but the cost was only $14 for their visit.

602crew 2026-02-18 23:17

I keep my keycard in my center console. I’ve been doing it for years.

mushyspider 2026-02-18 23:18

No wallet for 4 years now. Credit card on my phone. No issues. I tell valets that I don’t have a card and have to park myself. No issues so far

Asleep-Dingo-19 2026-02-18 23:19

How many people don't get this comment because they don't see spelling errors 😂

Asleep-Dingo-19 2026-02-18 23:21

jwegener 2026-02-18 23:28

Yep I keep one in the glovebox and it totally works fine (ie it’s not active while in there)

Torczyner 2026-02-18 23:38

You don't carry a driver's license? Pretty sure that's required everywhere. There's no way I'd hand my unlocked device to a cop to verify my id either. Not everywhere takes tap to pay. There's also medical card, Tesla card, Costco card, debit card, and cash you'd want to have on you.

Muhahahahaz 2026-02-18 23:52

I don’t see why it wouldn’t be in your wallet… With your other cards. That’s why it’s the same size as a credit card

mushyspider 2026-02-18 23:56

It’s in my glove compartment with pin. It’s together with my registration and insurance card. Thankfully, I’ve never had to pull it out. If I need my insurance card or Costco card, I put it in my pocket for the trip.

AnyAtmosphere7149 2026-02-18 23:59

You can use the app to let someone else drive the car with no key card. Use the “start” feature. It will allow someone else to drive your car once.

OldFargoan 2026-02-19 01:14

I was going to say the same. Glove box and set a pin to open it. No bag needed. That's the spare not in your wallet.

vkapadia 2026-02-19 03:51

I haven't carried a wallet in years. I carry nothing but my phone. Slip my license between my phone and case, and use tap to pay.

vkapadia 2026-02-19 03:58

I figure the odds of everything aligning to keep me out of the car are low enough to not worry about. I've had a Tesla for 8 years now, only ever came remotely close once.

dethsesh 2026-02-19 06:12

The world is also filled with phone chargers so, you’ll be fine lol

Torczyner 2026-02-19 13:21

Ah I carry mine with me because I have 4 cars and can't risk losing it. Glove compartment was one of our suggested solutions. The manual clearly states how the key cards work.

drnicko18 2026-02-19 20:37

The card needs to be hard up against the pillar. Seems like overkill putting it in a faraday cage.

vachecontente 2026-02-20 21:54

Sounds like your phone hasn’t died yet lol. Keep the card on you at all times. What if your phone gets stolen or you drop it…things happen.

Difficult-Text8042 2026-02-21 15:12

I’ve kept a key card in the car. As long as it’s not sitting on the console. Hide it in the car. In the trunk

HEYitsBIGS 2026-02-22 22:50
