Replace tires?

arealacc | 2026-02-17 23:18 | 37 views

Tires are around 4/32. 45k miles on the original tires right now. Located in California so not much rain/snow. Short commute. Would you replace now or milk them a bit more?

Milk it, that's 40% of most tires' total tread.  Take it to 2/32...

w1lnx 2026-02-17 23:21

Nearly. Not yet.

fastoid 2026-02-17 23:24

Absolutely required if hitting the red zone. In yellow - start searching for the deals at Costco and settle on price to qualify ratio. With the wet season almost done in CA, probably may go another 5k, or replace sooner if a road trip coming soon or found an absolute best deal.

Medium_Confusion_ 2026-02-17 23:25

Lol nah, I would keep going until it is almost bald.

JurassicTerror 2026-02-17 23:28

I still see tread. Milk. Unless you’re just totally itching to drop $1500 or whatever it’s gonna cost.

LoveleeChill 2026-02-17 23:29

If it rains/snows in your area i would replace soon. If its bone dry, youre probably fine til 2/32

jpstealthy 2026-02-17 23:30

Those tires still have a lot of life left. Trust me

arealacc 2026-02-17 23:31

I can’t edit original post but looks like I’m waiting! Thanks everyone for the feedback

Greenjeeper2001 2026-02-17 23:32

I wpuld replace before the wet season. So September?

Background-Suit5717 2026-02-17 23:36

I’ve seen aircraft techs replace them at 1/16 😅

Nathan-Nice 2026-02-17 23:40

I don't think I've ever replaced tires with that much visible tread, but then again, I've been known to be kind of an idiot.

drs7896 2026-02-17 23:41

Easy 10K mikes left on them. Unless they're getting old I'd wait

darensdorff 2026-02-17 23:43

I'm in the same exact boat as you. I've only got about 36K on my original tires. I feel like there's plenty of life left in them. Im in SoCal and work only a few days a week in office which is about a 90 mile commute round trip. I just dont have it in me to drop $1200 for a set right now. LoL

ptronus31 2026-02-17 23:43

4/32 is the limit for heavy rain. If you will never be in heavy rain or just feel lucky, punk, go for it, keep driving, just not on the same roads as me.

FreeSp1r1ted 2026-02-17 23:48

Nah, when it's bald, he has racing slicks for at least another 2k miles.

GoodOmens 2026-02-18 00:09

Only if you have a blowout and have to replace a tire then I’d do all. I’d let it ride

Sobatjka 2026-02-18 00:27

40k in PNW, but at 5-6/32 right now. I’ll reevaluate in September before the next wet season.

45k miles? That’s awesome. Lucky if I get 12k on my MXP

Capital-Control308 2026-02-18 01:30

Still a lot of meat on the bone 🍖 . Keep them

iamtheav8r 2026-02-18 01:44

Send it.

ericloz 2026-02-18 04:30

Well do you, feel lucky?

Relative-Weekend4248 2026-02-18 04:35

The car will alert you when to replace

ktbt 2026-02-18 04:50

That looks to be around 3/32 not 4..

MooseTM3 2026-02-18 10:13

Are wear bars not a universal thing around the world or am I losing it?

trifster 2026-02-18 10:22

I have the same gauge reading my tires at 3/32 evenly. original tires have 53k miles. I live in a moderate snow area and they’ve been fine even in fresh 6”. I plan to replace mine this summer. Normal driving style and conditions you’re fine until you hit the wear bars (2/32 usually).

Drewpost19 2026-02-18 11:43

Wait. I just had to replace two and purchased an alternate brand from $88 each instead of the $400 each for stock. Don’t notice a single difference

Mysterious-Dark-11 2026-02-18 12:07

They’re there.

dextroz 2026-02-18 12:36

Most people don't know about them or how to look for them.

Some_Map4879 2026-02-18 19:32

Recommend if you have extra money, but not in the real life , you have like 10.000 miles ahead of you

Turbulent-Abroad7841 2026-02-18 22:15

I use these to check! Great tip

MooseTM3 2026-02-18 23:40

There you go, I've never in my life actually measured my tread depth with a gauge. Always just checked the wear bars. Mind you I live in Australia where no snow falls so perhaps we are less interested in the actual tread depth during a given season and just that there's a legal amount there?

potmakesmefeelnormal 2026-02-19 22:54

Unless you're in the mountains, you're good for a while.
