Upgrading from Saga to SUV for a growing family

Awkward-Artichoke-56 | 2026-03-12 15:35 | 14 views

Hi everyone, Looking for some advice from people who know cars better than I do. I’m currently driving a 6yo Proton Saga. It’s been perfectly fine and honestly hasn’t given me any major issues but i think its time for an upgrade since our family is growing. We have one kid now and another on the way, so I’m starting to feel like we might need something with more space especially for car seat, stroller, bags, etc so looking into SUVs. Safety is pretty high on my list since we’ll be driving with two kids. I’m not really a “car person”, so I’m trying to balance practicality, reliability, and safety rather than anything too flashy. Right now I’m considering getting a used 2023–2024 model (at least theyre on warranty for few more years), mainly looking at Volvo XC40/60 and Tiguan, Atto 3 or Sealion. Looking at volvo n vw due to their safety reputation and practicality as a family suv, but I’m not sure how they are in terms of maintenance costs and reliability in Malaysia. Would love to hear from people who own any of these cars. Anything I should watch out for when buying secondhand (2023–2024)? Thanks in advance! Edit: Adding a bit more context. I really like the look of Volvo (also dream car when i was small) - which is why I’m considering them. If there are other Volvo SUVs worth looking at (XC90 probably too big), happy to hear suggestions. Throwing in the other 3 (Tiguan n the 2 BYDs cos I like the look as well). My wife is going into 3rd trimester so compact/mid size SUVs would make it easier for her to get in and out. My budget is ideally under RM180k, which is why I’m looking at fairly recent secondhand models (2023–2024). From what I’ve seen, those seem possible within that range. For context, I bought my Saga when I was earning around RM5k. Now I’m earning around RM30k, but still can’t justify paying full price for a brand-new car 😅 The Saga has served us really well for these years, but with another kid on the way (and the first one big enough to complain belakang panas no aircond) it feels like a good time to upgrade. Not planning to add more kids after this, tutup kedai.

Hello Awkward-Artichoke-56, thank you for creating a new post in r/kereta! Just saying that although this sub was named as Kereta, it is also open for 2 wheelers such as Motorcycle, though at the moment we do not mind other types of vehicles posting. With that being said, r/kenderaan is now live and I would still recommend any other vehicle posting to be posted into r/kenderaan as it is a safe space for all types of vehicles such as airplanes and rolling stocks. e.mas 7 PHEV?

SolDeAeon 2026-03-12 19:30

U know SUV have higher center of gravity and therefore are more prone to barrel roll when crashing, compared to sedan?

tempebae 2026-03-12 21:34

Toyota Corolla Cross

Apprehensive-Year664 2026-03-12 22:14

still heavier and stronger than sedans

It's hard to recommend when you don't give us a budget. If you need more storage space there's the roof rack options

Awkward-Artichoke-56 2026-03-12 23:52

Added more context to my post! Need the extra space to be easy to access daily for my wife so maybe not roof rack. Thanks for commenting though!

I have family members who drive them. There are some issues n not to my liking. Thanks for suggesting!

Awkward-Artichoke-56 2026-03-12 23:54

I think the front part looks weird…

Awkward-Artichoke-56 2026-03-12 23:55

Will try to test drive this but dont really like the look too much.

Hence Volvo for the safety aspect. Also as my wife is going into 3rd trimester it will be easier for her to get in n out of the car as well.

I'd say get volvo, they drop price very fast so those XC40 and 60 are within your price range, I'd trust them over the other european brands in maintenance (that tiguan)

From your responses and since you're looking for budget still, can I recommend the Mitsubishi Xforce? I know it's not the most advanced car out there but looks and comfort + NVH definitely is good. It's something I'm considering as well, alongside the emas 7 PHEV and S70

You can cross off XC40 & Atto 3 from your list imo. Not that much of an upgrade size wise.

Volvo can be very hard on the maintenance cost as after 5 years will hv a lot of wear and tear which is not reasonable anyway….If you can manage that cost means then go ahead bcoz Volvo can definitely can beat your other options…Or else you can buy a new CRV too which is still within your budget..You enjoy few new benefits too

Dizzy_Ask_729 2026-03-13 01:29

get new corolla cross bro or crv. why buy used

mhzmy 2026-03-13 02:11

if you cant accept proton issue, then good luck with the car choice list. you can google volvo and vw, reliability, and maintenance price.

Awkward-Artichoke-56 2026-03-13 04:03

More on the interior and the look n feel of the car though. X90 is also too big for us

I have a 2020 Tiguan and I’ve clocked 120k km already, and everyone who’s talking about VW reliability etc, well i have had no issues for the last 5 years albeit i service every 12k km at service center till today. Warranty is over and only claimed for some minor stuff in the cabin. The car drives really well, handling and power delivery is superb compared to Corolla cross, hrv and crv. The body of the car is heavy so u have that feeling of safety just like a Volvo. In terms of maintenance, normal service i do is around 500-600. Most major service at 100k km was about 4k total. Overall, couldn’t recommend it enough, my advice would be to get the 2.0 r line version 2025 unit from Volkswagen, they should be giving some pretty hefty discounts for it

vankomysin 2026-03-13 06:05

Also driven a Tiguan and I concur with this

realvcy95 2026-03-13 08:47

VW Tiguan Allspace all the way brooo. Mix and match with analog and digital. No doubt with the power & handling even for 1.4TSI engine just not a typical Japanese/Korean car maintenance.

CabinetInevitable730 2026-03-13 09:14

Dude, income from 5k to 30k in 6 years, please tell us your secret.

Awkward-Artichoke-56 2026-03-13 09:16

I dont like the look and feel. Buy used because even though i can afford new im still the same person who refuses to pay full price 😂

Awkward-Artichoke-56 2026-03-13 09:17

Thank you for sharing your experience! That’s not too bad at all.

Awkward-Artichoke-56 2026-03-13 09:17

Thats great to know! Thank you!

Awkward-Artichoke-56 2026-03-13 09:18

Thank you for sharing. How about maintenance?

Awkward-Artichoke-56 2026-03-13 09:18

That one is not on my radar at all. Will look into it thanks!

Awkward-Artichoke-56 2026-03-13 09:19

Oof thanks!
