In 2026 would you still by a BYD Seal AWD?

bigup7 | 2026-01-13 15:58 | 42 views

I'm looking at my first EV and the Seal has caught my eye, its 2026, would you still buy a BYD seal AWD over all the other brands out there in this segment? Looks like the Seal has been out since 2023, is it due a refresh in the UK soon? lacking rear heated seats and slow max DC charging at 150 kW. Thoughts?

>slow max DC charging at 150 kW. not answering your question but is there an infrastuture that can support this? Most places won't charge at more than 50kW

HotLie8579 2026-01-13 16:08

Where do you live? Plenty of 200+kW charging stations in the UK.

Panklas 2026-01-13 16:10

As a owner of sealion 7, I would wait for the new xpeng p7+.

bigup7 2026-01-13 16:13

I’m just reading from the spec sheet on ev database

toto-nator 2026-01-13 16:14

No, Not in 2026, neither before. This EV AWD is waste of money, due it's a placebo wannabe AWD. Do you live in a village? More than 20 snow days in the season? Not cleaned and salted by community? Maybe than AWD, but probably better buying a Suzuki Jimmny as second car for that 20 days. The only thing EV AWD does, adding weight on axes Sorry that's my opinion

spacetimebear 2026-01-13 16:28

I'm still considering it. The battery tech is still impressive 0-100% charging with minimum impact to battery. For my driving 150kw charging is fine as I have 2 diesel cars if I really need to do long range. 3.8s to 60 is still faster than most. The best part...the lease prices are currently incredible.

j3552024 2026-01-13 16:29

I have the RWD, the car drives and looks great. Downsides are the infotainment is a bit lacking compared to some of the other Chinese EVs and charging is very very inconsistent. However if you're only charging at home it's not a huge problem

bigup7 2026-01-13 16:35

yes, agree, but range has been spoken about a lot on BYD Seal facebook pages, some getting max 180 miles from full charge in winter (less is expected in winter but not that much)

spacetimebear 2026-01-13 16:49

That would be at the higher end of what I was expecting. The"real world" range of an AWD Seal is 275miles so 180miles in winter would be on the higher end of "winter" loses but should only really be in really cold weather, LFP batteries should also be a bit better in the winter. That being said 180 is pretty bad if it's just cold out and I'd be a bit annoyed. Tbh I haven't seen much of that on the Seal forums?

deed02392 2026-01-13 17:04

had mine for 6 months and very happy. almost exclusively charge overnight because it's far cheaper. rapid charging is expensive and then, when it charges at 150 kW that's still a plentiful charge in 30 mins. so yes is my answer to your question

I bought a Seal AWD in 2025, I have absolutely benefited from the additional traction in recent weeks. Where I am is a lot of unpaved or questionably paved country lanes that become a leafy quagmire in autumn and can become very slippery in winter under the right conditions. I could absolutely have managed just fine with a RWD variant but I noticed the difference and it was more pleasant. The performance of ITAC is a criminally underrated feature on BYD cars. However, I test drove both the RWD and AWD Seal, the upgraded passive suspension is worth it on the AWD version for sure. As for the charging speeds, I'm a pretty high mileage driver, 60-70 miles a day with fairly regular 250 mile plus routes and the charging speed is absolutely fine for me. Often public infrastructure is offer at or under the BYDs max charge capacity even when rated over, it's a great feature and I hope future BYD cars increase charge speed but the Seals is more than fast enough for me!

BYD unfortunately are one or a generations behind other Chinese EV's in battery tech and ADAS. Pretty much any Chinese company is better and quicker in adopting the latest battery tech and adas systems compared to BYD. The CEO even admitted that they have fallen behind in tech . If to are happy with the BYD seal tech, definitely go for it, it's really nice looking and you cannot go wrong with the premium interior Also look at zeekr if you have the option, they are quick to adopt the latest battery tech and ADAS systems. If you don't have option for any other EV, BYD seal is miles ahead of anything offered by European, Japanese or American auto industry

ag2f 2026-01-13 17:37

Charging curve is more important than max input

ag2f 2026-01-13 17:39

I'm sorry but what??? AWD offers more stability and traction control no matter the weather conditions.

Portugal

pbizz 2026-01-13 19:27

I got the AWD back end of last year in the UK. I've been really happy with it. Very fast and the tech is pretty good. Came from a 22 plate bmw and quality on the inside is fairly close.

Nitrogliserin 2026-01-13 19:43

SU7 would be a better choice but it’s lack of availability in most countries.

Numerous-Implement47 2026-01-13 21:09

Its a shame you dont get the Premium mid spec that we do in Australia as that gets more range, more power than base (obviously not as much as AWD) and the HUD etc. Not sure they didn't do for your market.

bigup7 2026-01-13 21:12

i think i saw model that was shown in asia which had a drinks cooler in it, probably not for us in the UK!

TheMarthaFarther 2026-01-13 21:19

The seal infotainment system really doesn't work for me. I've had it for three months and I've still no idea where stuff is. I drive both this and a Tesla Y. I'll use the Seal locally but my preference for the longer journeys is the Tesla without a doubt. And I'll say that despite the interior being so much nicer in the seal. Ultimately, I feel totally locked in with the Tesla ecosystem now, but I feel lost in the byd. I'll add that infuriatingly, I still haven't been granted access to the byd app which may be clouding my judgement more. In this recent cold weather the ability for me to whack on the heat in the Tesla at a click of the phone has been lush. I also like how I'm able to check where my wife is via the app when she drives it so i can have the tea ready. I've no idea if any of this is possible in the byd app. In summary, I was very happy to get the Seal as a company car; it looks nice, has a decent interior, isn't associated with that nob Musk, but Tesla do the basics better.

spacetimebear 2026-01-13 21:49

Yeh I can see some of the posts. That's shit, and annoying tbh...imagine spending near 50k on a car and getting nearly half the range in the winter? Still id only lease an EV currently and for me and my uses I could deal with that. I'd just have to charge a bit more in the winter months.

Numerous-Implement47 2026-01-14 05:37

No drinks cooler here which would go well in Aussie market! I bought when first released here in Aus end of 23 and love the car. The new 26 models have the auto sunshade, which I wouldn't have liked, but with silver coating hasn't been too bad. Also guess dont have winter exactly here by your standards so no issue there either.

that will depend on budget, but someone created a hierarchy of most premium to mainstream pyramid, will try to find it. Found it https://www.reddit.com/r/Nio/comments/1nta6dx/china_ev_brand_positioning/ Its more or less correct, its not from best to worst but from premium to mainstream.

2021Noob 2026-01-14 10:59

Own a 2023 model AWD, would buy it again tomorrow 👌😊

Eggie87 2026-01-14 12:53

Zeeker is much more expensive... Byd is basically almost entry lvl techy car for the international market

SexyDraenei 2026-01-15 02:13

Yes. Joke answer: No, the new wheels are ugly. Slightly more thoughtful answer: If I had to buy again, id probably stick with the Premium. Its plenty fast enough.

I test drove one and after 60mph it didn’t feel like a 500bhp car. Maybe the power curve does this on purpose for battery management?

Nope. Drove the 3.8s AWD one. And was in sport mode. 👍

I'm waiting for the refresh before ordering mine. I'd like an improved interior and a bit more range.

DLS85 2026-01-16 10:11

If you like to drive, then it's still by far the best option. The rest drive like a bathtub, not the way to enjoy 530 HP. For Reference, we own. Seal, Seal U, my current is a SL7. If you can homecharge, the speed doesn't matter, if you can't, don't get an EV.

TheMarthaFarther 2026-01-16 20:34

I'm intrigued, I get your not a fan of Tesla and I like them, but I can't understand the hate for the menu? It's so straightforward. Maybe I need to spend more time with the byd (I did mention I can't get the app so if there's stuff in there I don't know yet)

Fair enough mate. I guess I'm dialed in with the Y having done about 25km so it works well for me. Agree on button indicators though, fk that (thankfully not on mine)

Low_Risk_3476 2026-01-17 19:44

"It's 2026"..Really...??!! Nobody knew that..😲🙄🙄😅🤢.. Why didn't you just say "Would anyone consider buying this car right now"..

445warialda 2026-01-17 23:57

I actually prefer the new design wheels on the 2025, but hey, horses for coarses right?

Common-Suit4816 2026-01-18 23:27

Can't beat it for the price! Ive done 4k miles in two months and I love it. Yeah the Zeeker would be better but as people pointed out, much more expensive.

DarkMessiahDE 2026-01-31 18:42

Wo gibt es gute Leasing Preise für den BYD Seal ? Hab nix unter 300 Euro gefunden in Norddeutschland.

rayowl123 2026-02-15 20:40

Tbf BYD tech leads others in China and the Chairman was saying their *lead* has shrunk, it's just that they don't sell the most cutting edge cars overseas while its competitors do in order to try to overtake BYD. Buying a BYD overseas today probably means choosing better sales network, cheaper parts from scale, and potential access to their upcoming supercharging network over other OEM's tech which they will upgrade again in a year's time.
