Charge Update BYD Seal

Ok_Surprise_5929 | 2026-03-18 07:05 | 11 views

Hi everyone, I’m planning to buy an electric car and right now I’m deciding between the Xpeng G6 and the BYD Seal Design 2026. To be honest, I like the Seal a bit more overall. But there are two things that bother me: -The charging speed is only 150 kW -It doesn’t have automatic parking Do you think BYD might fix this with a future OTA update? Models like the Atto 3 and Sealion 7 Excellence seem to support faster charging, so the battery technology should be capable. That’s why I’m a bit disappointed that BYD didn’t improve the charging speed in the new Seal 2026. What do you think...is there any chance this could be improved via OTA, or will it stay like this? Thanks :)

I'm going to buy the seal, but I'm not buying it until BYD update the seal to the Evo spec, like the Atto 3 Evo, with much faster charging, better energy density, more power, etc.

As someone who owns a Seal since 6 months, that is my only regrets, the charging speed. Specially with Blade 2 batteries or the Xpeng P7+ who offers 10-80% charge in 12min. Even tho I don't often need to fast charge. The Denza will start it's commercialization in April 2026 with Blade 2 technology, I'd wait a bit. Other than that, the Seal is a very great car !

Can't see the Seal getting selfpark. While charging speeds are on the lower side the Seal is a great car and its pros very much outweigh its cons.

Avoid the Seal. See my other commments and threads among many other long term owners. Steer clear. The cracks begin to show quickly. Perceived quality is great but it is only surface deep. Just my two cents.

Really? Automatic parking? 😂

SexyDraenei 2026-03-18 08:41

you cant change the C rating of a battery with an update.

zedder1994 2026-03-18 08:47

The big gripe from what I have read with auto parking, and this seems across the board including ICE cars, is that it is so slow. It might be good if you like to hold up the cars behind you. If you want to hold off, the most recent release of the Seal in China with blade 2 batteries has flash 1MW charging on a 1000V architecture. An OTA won't change any of that.

So it has your seal of approval?

Do bear in mind that different battery chemistries have different charging curves. If you compare current Tesla Model 3’s with the NMC battery pack, their peak charge rate is higher but it throttles charging speeds more aggressively as the state of charge increases. By comparison, the version with an LFP battery pack has a lower peak charge rate but a much flatter charge curve, so that a charging session from 10-80% takes a similar amount of time. BYD uses LFP batteries, so while peak charge rates are lower that does not necessarily mean it takes materially longer to get from 10-80%. You need to take the charge curve into account. In practice, I’ve driven on longer journeys with Model 3’s that have NMC packs and Model 3’s with LFP packs, as well as a 2025 BYD Sealion 7, and they all seem comparable in real world use in terms of charging stops. Where you can notice a difference is during winter, as LFP batteries are slower to charge at lower temperatures, so you need to make sure you pre-heat the battery pack before a rapid charging session.

Do you reckon this might just be for the awd model and not the design model?

Lumenatti99 2026-03-18 10:19

If it’s the 230kw rear motor, it’s a known issue. Amongst a myriad of other issues with the car since new. Covered 40k now and non stop issues and fighting with BYD to fix anything. Worst car I’ve owned in 30 years of driving and over 45 vehicles. Never again.

Ok_Surprise_5929 2026-03-18 10:30

What exactly do you mean?

Ok_Surprise_5929 2026-03-18 10:36

Thank you very much for the answers :) About the auto parking: it would be nice to have because I’m not a very good parker 😄, but it’s not a dealbreaker for me. About the charging speed: I don’t expect anything over 400 kW like the XPeng. But around 220 kW like the Atto would be great, so it’s more future-proof and you can charge faster if needed. For the battery, I actually prefer LFP. I also looked at the Cupra Born, but I’m not a big fan of the NMC battery because I think it’s less durable. Right now it’s a difficult decision for me: XPeng, BYD, Cupra, or maybe wait to see what BYD releases this year. But I think the Denza will probably be too expensive for me.

Maybe wait for the seal with blade 2 battery? Though I'm not sure how long that will be released outside of China.

2021Noob 2026-03-18 12:22

OTA can't fix either of these for you, it'shardware limitations.

Aluveitie 2026-03-18 13:30

At least the Atto 3 charges faster because it has a smaller battery, I think all 3 have 150kw charging. My wife has had an EV6 for a few years now, which theoretically could charge at 250kw, but only at 800V. I think most charging stations rated at 250kw around here are 400V, not 800V. I never saw the EV6 charge faster than 120kw, and often quickly dropping to 80kw. I didn't fast charge my new Seal yet, but I don't think being limited to 150kw is a big deal. We did several 800km trips with the EV6 and with normal short breaks every 2-3h or so, charging never felt limiting. We might have end up sitting 5 or 10min longer than we'd have with a ICE car, but I didn't make much difference. Previously I had a BMW i3 with automatic parking. I tried it once, but it was so much slower than me parking myself that I never used that feature. I didn't even think of checking that when I evaluated the Seal. With a 360 camera, parking any way is pretty easy and faster than self parking.

Brembo109 2026-03-18 15:19

As a Seal owner myself i would welcome a higher charging speed, but it is really not that much of concern. You have to think about your charging habits and how the "slow" charging impacts you, but i charge my car 90% at work with AC. When i am doing a trip, i start with 100% and charge a maximum of 1-2 times. For the few times a year its totally fine. Last trip i waited so long for my meal at McDonalds that the Seal reached 100% :-D. I don´t think BYD can and will increase the charging speeds per OTA updates, because of hardware limitations. Even if similar models support it, the seal could have the same cells but different power management. Maybe they reused it in the face lift and stayed at 150 kW peak. I wouldnt bet on it. Any speacial reason you like the Seal more over the G6? I am interested in a G7+ myself.

Brembo109 2026-03-18 15:22

Good point with the automatic parking. I had it in a Seal Leon and used it twice in 4 years. At the second attempt it scratched my rims bad :-(. Never used it again. Like you i didnt even looked for this feature when choosing the Seal.

xzerooriginx 2026-03-18 17:04

Owner of the BYD Seal Premium in SEA region here. Yes, while the charging could be faster, it doesn't really make any huge difference to me personally because I go on long trips only a couple of times a year and each time I simply plug it in and get something to eat or chill with an extra YouTube video as opposed to if I had faster charging. I'd absolutely love auto parking too but my old man drives the Leopard Ti7 and it feels more like a gimmick than a necessity. I have a friend who uses the Changan Uni-T that comes with auto parking too and he has used it like 3 times during the last 4 years. I'd strongly recommend you wait for the Blade 2.0 but as far as I'm concerned, I'm very happy with my current 2023 Long Range model.

Ok_Surprise_5929 2026-03-19 05:13

Hi, I like the BYD a bit more in terms of looks. In China I often used Didi, and many of the cars were BYD, and I liked them a lot. Yesterday I test‑drove the G6. In my opinion, it already feels very premium. Of course, it also costs more. If the BYD had the Blade 2 battery with higher charging power, it would be a no‑brainer for me. But like this, it’s really a difficult decision. Since my old car “died” in an accident, I unfortunately need to make a decision soon xD

Ok_Surprise_5929 2026-03-19 05:20

Hi, thanks a lot for your reply. I think it’s always good to have more charging power, and I see higher charging speeds as more future‑proof. If the BYD had the Blade 2 battery, it would be a no‑brainer for me. Do you know if there is any information on when that might happen? Yesterday I test‑drove the G6, and I have to say it’s also really good. That definitely doesn’t make my decision easier. Since my old car “died” in an accident, I unfortunately need to make a decision soon, and I don’t really want to lease or buy a new ICE car xD

xzerooriginx 2026-03-19 07:25

AFAIK they're putting it on their Denza sub brand this year so most probably next year(?). The global version gets them later. I'm using the Chinese version since there's not much difference. A quick search shows it's already on the Seal 07 2026 model so maybe sooner than I initially though.

_ytrohs 2026-03-19 10:20

Most people don’t tend to use the high speed charging as often as you might expect, I charge at no more than 5kW most of the time

The initial perceived quality is there but with time it fades and design flaws and other reliability issues come aging through. You can research more about the Seal and SL7s about the myriad of issues they are having and BYD is very difficult to deal with in most countries. Months for a diagnosis and weeks and weeks for warranty approval and parts. You can follow and read my threads and see what i and others are talking about. Wish I had done better research when I bought the Seal AWD but there were none that had any sort of kms on them or age. They age poorly.
