The Mazda received some pretty bad reviews in Bjørn Nyland's extensive testing, largely around poor software and suboptimal charging speeds in winter. The BYD is better in the sense that the software has been greatly improved over the years, but its battery is known to rapidgate (throttle during fast charging due to overheating). But if you want a sedan, there's not much options other than these two and the Tesla Model 3 (which is pretty much the best sedan out there at the moment, unless you spend more on the BMW i4 or Mercedes EQE).

There's also the polestar but ehhh. I just hate suvs but don't want to remortgage my last tank of fuel for a merc. I'll heck out that review tho! Ty

Might also want to check out Bjørn's 1000km challenge of the Seal where it rapidgated on long trips. But if you don't do long trips often, then the rapidgating won't be an issue.

Wouldn’t waste your time with these two. Tesla Model 3 is the best EV sedan under 100k

RE Mazda 6e: Jeez, I don’t think the conditions he tested in (-15 deg c) are entirely relevant for Australian conditions!

Have had a seal premium myself for 3 months. Amazing performance for your dollar. Premium leather and more features than you can poke a stick at. Aesthetic personally I think is second to none. It drives and handles like a dream. I feel the same happiness every time I drive since I first bought the car. If that helps :)

If you going to add to a conversation you really need to give reasons for a comment like that.

That's a tough one. Mazda would be a newer car. So newer tech, also a more practical liftback! But then the first batches for sure will have glitches and small issues. BYD also looks stunning and it's been on sale for quite some time with all the issues ironed out and the tech is still good. Uff.... I would test both and just go with the gut feeling.

Polestar is great, have you driven one?

His_Holiness 2026-03-18 13:39

The 6e we are going to get will be very different to the European specs. Wait until local reviews

_Pauly_Paul 2026-03-18 17:03

European Mazda 6e uses a completely different battery. Aussie models are getting a larger, different battery.

Drive other sedans and compare, it’s clear. Have not driven the Mazda yet but reviews don’t make me think it will be the benchmark https://www.drive.com.au/news/tesla-model-3-wins-best-urban-ev-under-100k/

Lacks V2L which could be a big deal for some people, Tesla sure are slow to move with important features

Fictitious-Fighter75 2026-03-18 22:35

like Sentry mode or driver profiles that BYD has?

Fictitious-Fighter75 2026-03-18 22:38

Model 3 Premium RWD is only couple thousand more than the Seal now.  M3 with greater boot and frunk space amongst better software, etc etc

ArseneWainy 2026-03-18 23:05

Those aren’t deal breakers like the lack of V2L is Model Y performance has it, it’s just Elmo’s a cunt that needs to segment everything and push people into spending more rather than implement it on the cheaper models. Tanking Tesla sales seems to back that up

ScreamingAtTheTrees 2026-03-18 23:11

I have not. Maybe I'll look at them too. What makes them great?

Fictitious-Fighter75 2026-03-18 23:19

maybe to you it’s a deal breaker. i’ve had a Seal for over 2 years, never used V2L once.  would happily sacrifice it for a couple of the many benefits Model 3 has.  tbh, you seem overly sensitive about Elon, so i’m guessing youll jump on any excuse to fulfil your emotional incompetence anyway.

ScreamingAtTheTrees 2026-03-18 23:19

I literally can't bring myself to buy a Tesla. It's unfortunate, because I know they're tried and tested. But no matter how good the car is I would hate it and would hate myself for paying more for a tesla. (Plus I hate the way they look) so yeah, thera that 🤣

ScreamingAtTheTrees 2026-03-18 23:21

Yeah I'm not looking at a tesla at all. :)

ScreamingAtTheTrees 2026-03-18 23:22

Im severely leaning toward the mazda at this point. Tho have test driven neither. I might go for a spin in the byd on the weekend mazdas don't hit Melbourne till June so I can't with that one yet.

ArseneWainy 2026-03-18 23:33

You always feel the emotional need to defend cocks like Elon? I remember when other people used to think he was a decent guy too Cyber truck is awesome lol

denwol 2026-03-18 23:48

That was from Feb, 2024. I would also take a review by drive with a grain of salt. What other sedans have you test driven?

Im not calling you names for your preferences. I understand everyone has their own taste in everything and would never feel insulted just because someone didn't like something I did. I want to enjoy my next car as much as I've enjoyed all of my cars, they need to be aesthetically pleasing to me as well as comfortable. Tesla's aren't my taste, I won't apologise for that, but I do wonder if you're ok?

ScreamingAtTheTrees 2026-03-19 02:10

Oh my dislike of Tesla's has nothing to do with Elon. I literally don't like the car. As i said, it's unfortunate because it's done the miles. Its also the reason ill never buy a Chevrolet silverado, or an suv. I just don't like them I drive a lot and want to love my car

ScreamingAtTheTrees 2026-03-19 02:13

I've test driven 0 at this point. All I know is I want a sedan that looks decent and has decent spect and a decent price. I'll go test driving this weekend.

Harderharder7 2026-03-19 04:27

While I've owned and loved Mazda's in the past I would not buy a Japanese EV at the moment so definitely the seal if you won't go Tesla for one of the many valid reasons not to. The latest software updates to the seal have made it much closer in competition to the model 3 too

ScreamingAtTheTrees 2026-03-19 04:47

I feel like I'm about to go down a rabbit hole google searching this, but what's the main issue with jap ev? I have a test drive of a seal booked, not being able to test the Mazda might make the byd win out. 🙃

Harderharder7 2026-03-19 05:03

They are just Chinese EVs with a Japanese body. They are still anti-ev and are being dragged kicking a d screaming into the ev era so they just don't want to do a good ev. To be clear I would get a Tesla, they are the best but I fully understand why people want to avoid anything related to musk
