BYD SEAL U DM‑i - Design

Hi everyone! I currently own a 2009 Toyota Highlander Hybrid, and it’s time for a new car. I’m looking at the BYD SEAL U DM‑i, Design trim (I want AWD for sure). My question is: what happens if I don’t charge it very often? I live in an apartment, so I can only use public chargers. Will the battery get damaged? Or does it have something like Toyota’s system that charges the battery from braking? I don’t drive much anyway, mostly public transport. I plan to keep the car for 7–10 years. How reliable is it? Also, how’s the interior quality? Thanks!

I think I'd recommend against DM-i if you can't charge at home The dm-i system isn't designed for infrequent charging. You won't damage the battery, but it will be very inefficient to drive. This is because it tries to be an EV first, and uses the engine primarily to recharge rather than drive. If you can't charge frequently, you're probably better off with either full EV (keeping in mind the extra cost of public chargers) or a "traditional" hybrid like Toyota does. Re your other questions, interior quality (and general build quality) is excellent. Can't really say much about reliability because the model has only been out for a couple of years!

Also recharging is freaking loud if you compare it to idle or low rev normal engine. Sometimes I think there's no engine but a normal diesel generator, because it surely sounds like one :)

As an owner of the AWD variant, I definitely agree with that. It's actually quick if you want it to be, amazing in general for comfort, smoothness of the ride, but don't make the ICE the main source of frequent charging. On highway rides, no problem, it will do exactly what it's meant to do when told to keep battery charged and in a way I find relaxing as well to be honest. If you let it drain and then ask to to charge, it becomes obvious the car's not designed like that. Hope that helps
