Is Front Cross Traffic Braking on the BYD Seal U DM-i a bit… dramatic?

Hi everyone, quick question for fellow BYD owners. I drive a **BYD Seal U DM-i Comfort** and I’ve noticed that the **Front Cross Traffic Braking** can be a little… over-enthusiastic. Typical scenario: I’m about to enter a roundabout. There’s a car coming on the roundabout, still at a reasonable distance. I start moving slowly to merge and... **emergency braking** as if an imminent collision were detected, while I’m suddenly being strangled by the seatbelt like I’ve done something terribly wrong. In practice, it feels like I have to wait until the other car has completely passed before I can even start moving, otherwise the car slams the brakes, even when the other vehicle isn’t that close. Is this normal ? * Do you experience the same behavior? * Is there a setting that makes it less sensitive, or is it just something you get used to? Curious to hear your experiences and to know if my car is just extra cautious 😄 Just FYI, this is an Italian version (not sure if all European BYD models are the same). ***Possible solution:*** One user suggested a possible workaround that actually makes sense: There’s no dedicated sensitivity setting specifically for **FCTB**, but they had the **exact same issue** and solved it by changing **Forward Collision Warning** to “**Late**”. Since doing that, their car no longer brakes hard by itself at roundabouts—just a quiet beep warning when another vehicle is present, which honestly sounds much more reasonable. That setting could indeed affect **all emergency braking functions**, not just frontal collisions. That said, the way BYD designed the settings menu is quite misleading: **FCTB is visually separated** from **Collision Avoidance Assist**, which really makes it look like the FCW sensitivity should not apply to FCTB at all. In any case, I’ll give it a try. My Forward Collision Warning was set to “**Early**”, so I’ll switch it to “Late” and see how it behaves. I’ll report back once I’ve tested it properly. It’s the same for the sealion 7 have the same issue when about to enter a roundabout and the car was past me and as I went to enter the roundabout the system activated and stopped the car even though the other vehicle was now exiting the roundabout …

Yep exact same thing happened to me this week, no risk at all of me hitting the car that was exiting the roundabout and bam! My car slammed on the breaks and luckily the car behind me didn’t slam into me. I understand this can be an amazing feature in a true emergency situation but it’s scary when it decides to just do this in normal traffic.

Sadly to tell you it is not byd issue it is italian and french driving behaviour issue, I get struggling in roundabouts every time i drive there, seems no clear rules so how you are expecting a car to stick to any code to handle this situation?

You can tune it in settings, so actually you haven't set it properly according to your driving style.

It's one of the ADAS things I turn off every time I power on the car. Too much risk of being rear ended.

Hi Tom, I'm not sure I can do it. On the BYD Seal U DM-i, Front Cross Traffic Braking (FCTB) does not have sensitivity or tuning settings. It can only be enabled or disabled. The adjustable settings you’re referring to apply to Forward Collision Warning / AEB, which are separate systems. Those settings do not change the behavior of FCTB. So this is not a matter of driving style or misconfiguration—FCTB simply doesn’t offer fine-tuning options in the vehicle settings.

I did it a long time ago and i've checked the settings today and you are right, there's no dedicated setting for that. But i've had exactly the same problem, the car was braking insanely in front of rondabout ... and i managed to change it. I've checked my settings and yes - try to change: **(what is your setting atm here?)** Forward Collision Warning - i have it on "Late" (maybe it's a general setting for all the emergency braking help) and my car don't brake by itself anymore on rondabouts, the only thing i get is a quiet beep sound - when my car is still in the move coming slowly to roundabout and there's an other car on it - which actually i like, because it's just a message that there's a vehicle on a roundabout, but no more sudden braking, so maybe that's it. https://preview.redd.it/8by9063885bg1.jpeg?width=480&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f5a850849980033350201c22c678dca43e3faa74

Yes, you’re absolutely right — that setting could indeed affect every type of braking. That said, the way BYD designed the graphics in that settings section, with FCTB separated from Collision Avoidance Assist, really makes it look as if the sensitivity setting does not apply to FCTB at all. In any case, I’ll give it a try with Forward Collision Warning set to Late and see how it behaves (mine was set on Early). If it works the same way for me, I’ll let you know. No, it's a BYD issue that drivers around the world are having issues with. It's not the drivers as it doesn't happen with other brands of cars that have the same features driven the same way. Never happened with my VW ID3, doesn't happen with my Ioniq 5 just happens with the BYD Dolphin.
