BYD Seal U DM-i Comfort vs Design (German market) – am I missing any real differences?

Worth_Relief4050 | 2026-01-02 08:46 | 26 views

After a long period of research and a test drive (BYD Seal U Electric - Comfort) in the **German market**, I am leaning towards the **BYD Seal U DM-i Comfort**. However, I am still a bit undecided about whether I might be overlooking something important compared to the **Design** version. From what I can tell so far, the main difference seems to be **AWD** (and the associated power boost). On the **German BYD website**, I could mostly find references to “Boost” and “Design,” but no clear, detailed equipment comparison. So I have a few specific questions regarding the **DE-spec model**: 1. Does the **Comfort** version in Germany also have a **head-up display**, or is that exclusive to the Design version? 2. How long does it take to **fully charge** the Comfort version in the German market – both via **AC (11 kW wallbox)** and **DC fast charging (CCS)**? If anyone owns one in Germany or has done a deeper comparison of the **DE models**, I would really appreciate your insights. Thanks in advance.

I have seal u dm-i comfort in here in finland. It does have hud. Differences are that comfort is fwd, has bigger battery, doesnt have turbo in engine and does not come with v2l adapter. I think everything else is same if you compare it. My model did not have wiring for dashcam so had to order it too. It took about 2h15min to charge it from 0% to 95% with 11kw charger. 23.6kwh charged. Ccs is 18kw but it costs about double that 11kw costs so i dont use it.

I had both the FWD non-turbo and the AWD turbo models, if you want efficiency and range the FWD is the best model, otherwise go AWD. Fast charging is irrelevant IMO, just fill the tank and carry on, PHEVs work best with home charging.

The only differences in the car are the awd and the battery size Only charge outside the house at 11kw otherwise it's too expensive. Also car is limited to charge at 18(?)kwh

Thanks for sharing, that’s really helpful. Good to know the Comfort has the HUD as well — that was one of my open questions. The bigger battery and simpler engine setup are actually points in favor of the Comfort for my use case. Overall, how has BYD ownership been so far (software, quality, service, updates)?

Nice that you’ve had both versions — that’s great real-world insight. How has your overall BYD ownership experience been so far?

Overall it has been pretty chill, didn't have any major issues, everything just works and that's it. The AWD model when I got had an issue that it would not keep the SAVE SoC, took it to the dealer that told me they did an update and the issue should be resolved, which was not the case. I solved it myself by performing a full battery discharge. My only complain with both models is that the suspension could be a little bit firmer, it bounces if you go fast over uneven surfaces and feels like it never settles, I prefer a sportier setting.

Detailed comparison between Boost and Design is in the "broschure" as all other details: [**https://www.byd.com/material/byd-site/de/pdfs/seal-u-dm-i/SEAL-U-DM-i-0524-BPS-DE-2car-V3\_web.pdf**](https://www.byd.com/material/byd-site/de/pdfs/seal-u-dm-i/SEAL-U-DM-i-0524-BPS-DE-2car-V3_web.pdf) Yeah, the Comfort version is missing. Boost also has Head-up display, but ... i've had Head-up display in my previous car (Mazda 6) for 5 years ... now in my Seal Design i don't have and i actually don't care / don't mind, if you don't have it and the speedometer is digital with easy visibility it actually doesn't matter. I really don't miss it and i actually like the clean windshield view. AC - 11kW max DC - 18 kW max Battery is 18,3 kWh ... so now it's only mathematics, however they write that 15-100% with 11kW charger (irl 10kW charging) takes 120 minutes, so it means that the charging power above > 80% must drop drastically, because normally with 11kW charger (charging 10kW irl) you could charge +- 20kWh in 120 minutes, not (100%-15%) 85% = 15kWh. https://preview.redd.it/67gxxnzynxag1.png?width=978&format=png&auto=webp&s=ed62c9670f98f9eecdb8764eba635b6f3c258fa4

The battery's capacity is 18,3kWh: [https://www.byd.com/material/byd-site/fi/pdfs/ESITE-SEAL-U-DM-i-BYD-05-25.pdf](https://www.byd.com/material/byd-site/fi/pdfs/ESITE-SEAL-U-DM-i-BYD-05-25.pdf) Where did you get the 23,6kWh? - then it looks like there's a huge energy loss, maybe above 80%?

Thanks for sharing, that sounds pretty reassuring overall. Good to hear it’s been mostly trouble-free and that everything just works. Interesting point about the suspension — I actually felt something similar when I test drove the **Seal U (full electric)**. Coming from a smaller, lower car, the softer suspension and body movement in an SUV felt a bit unsettling to me at first and honestly delayed my purchase decision because it felt less “planted”. Since this was also my first real SUV experience, a few people told me that this feeling is quite common when moving from a smaller car to an SUV. I’m curious — did you get used to it over time, or do you still notice it and feel a bit less confident on uneven roads? Appreciate your insight.

Got it, thanks.

ag2f 2026-01-02 16:17

I still notice it, but I got used to it. It's not inherit of SUVs though, I had other SUVs that are much more planted.

Comfort has 26,6kWh battery. https://www.byd.com/material/byd-site/uk/pdfs/price-and-specifications/Seal%20U%20Dmi-0524-BPS-EN-2car-V4-web.pdf

Ah, thanks, that's the case, as they didn't show Comfort in previous catalogue but I could've spend more time reading your first comment ;)

Any tips and tricks you could share on the car? Just purchased the AWD model but it hasn’t been delivered yet. It’s my first PHEV/electrified car.

ag2f 2026-01-03 10:25

Not really much to say, the car is pretty straightforward. Adjust the car to your liking, at least in my market you can turn off most of the bings and bongs and they stay like that. I turned off LKA and left only the vibration warning, I don't like the car turning the steering wheel unless it is in ICC. There are ways to sideload apps, but it could void your warranty, depends on your market. If you can't charge the car daily, I would keep the SAVE SoC setting around 40%, when the battery reaches 15% the motor kicks harder so I like to give it more leeway before that.

Where I live I have to get approval from the condo management to install a charger, plus pay for an engineering assessment testifying it wont interfere with the building electrical system plus another certification that the installation followed all of the correct standards. So I’m doing that but it’s not a given yet that I would be able to do it. That being the case, I was indeed planing to leave the car in save 50/60%, as it’s in the comfort range for LFP batteries and I do have a bit of juice left when needed. I frequently visit supermarkets or shopping malls where I can top off the charge when needed.

ag2f 2026-01-03 10:36

Just keep in mind that the system doesn't guarantee the save percentage, it will try it's best to keep it around that percentage but it can often drop 25% below it specially if you have hills and lots of slow driving.

Good to know. Thanks.
