Dashcam recommendations for BYD Seal in the UK?

deed02392 | 2025-12-16 11:46 | 26 views

Hi all, I've had the Seal since June this year and loving it. I've seen some videos where you can get a dashcam, open a cover in the windscreen and then pray there's a loose cable in there you can plug into? If you're lucky, the cable will trigger the dashcam to record onto an SD card you put between the driver and passenger seats when you start the car. Has anyone in the UK followed this process and if so, which camera did you buy and where did you get it from? I'm also wondering about rear dash cameras. Being rear-ended is normally assumed to be the driver behind you, meaning they're less likely to be necessary in a claim. But I figured I'd ask here in case anyone has somehow managed to set both cameras up to record together to the same SD card with the car ignition status.

Following with interest. Im also in the UK and have a brand new seal. I bought the OEM camera from topbyd. I removed the plastic behind the rear view and the cable is there but it's stuck in some cable management clip I can't get it out of and the hole the camera needs to poke out is blocked with something I couldn't get out. Be very interested to see how you get on if you try it. I gave up for now but will have another go at some point.

You need to carefully cut the tape to free the cable.

I cut the tape and that freed it up somewhat but not enough to reach. There's a hard plastic clip holding the cable with the end facing away from where it needs to go. It looks like it could unclip from there but I got scared I was going to break it. Be really interested to see if anyone with a new UK seal manages to sort that and get the plastic cover off the camera hole as it wouldn't budge at all for me.

Did this from almost day one (UK BYD Seal). Very easy process. Ordered one from Aliexpress for around £40. Removed the cover, located cable, cut the tape retaining the cable, fit cable to camera, fit camera in to its retaining clips, refit cover. Once the car starts up it tells you it needs to make a configuration change, reboots infotainment and that is it, of course you will need to source an SD Card too.

Thank you. Which camera and SD card did you buy? Do you have any solution for rear-facing?

I have a new Seal here in the UK too. Can somebody explain why they deliberately choose to not ship the vehicle with a dashcam? Multiple cameras around the car and zero recording capabilities. It is one of the biggest let downs for me

It looks like being overcautious about not getting into any privacy-related hot waters.

The built in cam is not very good quality tbh. I do like that it records some vehicle stats though. Here is a short clip from mine, you can see that it really stuggles with trees due to not enough bitrate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9X7h5_OxxVU I have been meaning to get a nice 4k cam with rear view but haven't gotten around to it.

stsfyrcm 2025-12-16 14:06

Will find they will eventually be mandatory in all vehicles soon, so nothing to do with privacy. I would say it is simply to cut costs because currently they are a want, rather than a need. Shocking really

You can use the “back” camera for this if you run a continuous loop recording on your android system.

Seal-EV 2025-12-16 14:40

Release the clip. There is an opening in the clip to slide the cable out.

pbizz 2025-12-16 14:43

I will definitely give it another go at the weekend. Any advice for getting the front cover off that covers the hole the camera pokes through?

Seal-EV 2025-12-16 14:52

Just push it out from the inside. Before mounting the camera just connect the camera first and reboot the system. Fit only after the car recognizes the camera.

I didn’t realise we could use the built in cameras. Do you have a guide on how to set that up?

deed02392 2025-12-16 15:44

Thanks for sharing. What do you mean by the built in cam? From that footage, it’s not installed in the rain sensor module like I think others are doing with the OEM camera.

Poromenos 2025-12-16 15:56

This is nothing like mine. Mine records fine, though there's some analog ghosting due to a wire issue somewhere.

Samsung EVO Plus 512GB. The item number on Aliexpress was 1005007199262237

I ordered from cartridge world. https://www.cartridgeworld.co.uk/byd-seal-dash-cam-with-128gb-micro-sd-card/

SexyDraenei 2025-12-16 21:31

it is a byd oem part, connecteded to the factory wiring harness inside the cowling behind the rearview mirror

SexyDraenei 2025-12-16 21:32

its fine when there isn't a load of trees making the bitrate requirements go up. (its also made slightly worse by youtube, but the original file is still bad)

deed02392 2025-12-16 22:36

Thank you very much. Did you need to order the cable or just the camera? I’m assuming if there’s no cable then routing it is gonna be more trouble than it’s worth Edit: Since I read some late 2024 models and newer don’t have the wiring I’ve just ordered a 4pc Bojo pry tool set so I can cleanly open it and check before ordering

For me the weirdest thing is that none of the parking camera streams can be recorded. That’s a basic Tesla feature from what I can tell from friends, including remote viewing. Also, the BYD app is pretty terrible.

Astrarle 2025-12-17 00:19

Some owners have been able to sideload apps that allow recording from those very same parking cameras, enabling 360 degree recording (as well as sentry mode). I also agree the app needs more updates.

Poromenos 2025-12-17 10:02

Hmm, maybe I just haven't looked at trees, but I don't remember it being this low bitrate, even with lots of moving scenery. I'll take another look.

In Spain, the dealer was very reluctant to fit one for me, if they did, I would need to sign a disclaimer from their liability to any privacy issues. As they explained to me, Spain and or EU? Does not allow you to record without permission from the subject, no idea if it's true, but the dealer was running away from me paying them to do the job.

Wonka0998 2025-12-17 15:38

You can also try the app Electro

deed02392 2025-12-20 14:59

Maybe it’s down to different physical camera modules or software versions? Would be interesting to compare metadata or analyze the video files

Garreh 2025-12-20 21:45

\+1 this, mine arrived next day, fitted in 10 minutes as the cable was already there.

kerman1983 2025-12-21 09:11

From what. I understand the UK seal always has the cable installed at factory, just need to locate it.
