BYD Seal AC Fix

Astrarle | 2025-12-12 04:43 | 41 views

Hi everyone, I saw a lot of posts relating to the AC of our cars being weak and I believe I have a solution. I would like some more data for confirmation though. For context, I’m in Australia where it can reach 30-35 degrees Celsius or more on some days lately. I got the inspiration for this experiment from being in my friend's Tesla and the AC on that cooled the cabin faster than my Seal, despite the fact that it wasn't blasting as much air as my BYD when it's on auto. That led me to believe that the strength of the fans played a part in how fast it cooled the cabin so I tried to experiment with the strength of the fans: On hot days when the AC is on auto, it would normally max out the strength of the fan and continue to blow hot air no matter how long I waited. When I turn down the fan strength to 3 or 4, it starts blowing cool air at a good speed within a few minutes. This is around the same strength of airflow as I experienced on the Tesla on a hot day. While I'm not sure how it works mechanically, I think it's worth trying as a solution to the AC problems that some people have had on hot days. I would like some data on this from others so let me know how it goes. In summary, if you want to cool down your car faster, instead of auto or maxing out the AC fan strength, try level 3 or 4 (midway).

I found out this one too. Fan on 3 or 4 cools much faster than on full blast. My instinct tells me on full blast, there's so much heat into the evaporator, the compressor can't keep up to cool the coolant, therefore, you only get no-so-much cool air blowing if you set it on full blast

I tried that today, fans were on 3-4, recirculating turned off, auto change to recirculating in slow speeds or parking disabled and the cabin temp got lower than my A/C settings for the first time ever. It was overcast and cool outside so its hardly a great test. I'll do it again with the sun out and 30c+ temps and see how it goes. It will be a shame if my cars A/C only works when it is cold enough to not be needed and completely useless once it actually gets hot enough to need it turned on. Set of questions I wouldn't mind getting some opinions on for those with good or bad A/C's in the Seal. 1. How accurate is your ambient air temp sensor on the dash? Mine is always way off once the car gets going, 6+ degrees off 2. When you have your A/C going, if you look behind the front license plate, there is a plastic grill with rotating fins, are yours open or closed? I have never seen mine open under any conditions.

I had a similar picture in my head as you described. The fan kept circulating hot air inside the cabin when in full blast so I had a feeling that was the case. If it’s true, I hope BYD does an OTA update to adjust the auto conditioning accordingly, especially since a lower fan speed consumes less power than on full blast (obviously).

yes, they need to not make the fan curve so aggressive (still on level 3 or 4 when 2° over the target)

1. I haven’t checked often but right now the dash is reading 37 degrees outside while my phone’s weather app tells me it’s 30 degrees or so. 2. Do you mean the flaps in front of the compressor? They seem to be open for mine. Not sure if this was the part you referred to.

I'm going try this on the next hot day. I did find opening the window a little helps push the air around too.

Maybe I've missed it, but it would be handy to be able to change the fan speed via the app. I get it's trying to get me to my set temperature as quickly as possible but I'm often happy to turn the fan to 2-3 (if I could). Especially if I'm still 15 minutes from the car

I agree. Sometimes the car uses more power than it needs to pre-condition the cabin.

If you open the hood, you should see a label with the type of refrigerant that is put in and the weight can you share that please

I general with AC the coldest vent air temp is achieved at the lowest fan speed with maximum air flow over the front heat exchanger. The internal heat exchanger can only get so cold before it ices over so the more air passing over it (higher fan speeds) reduces the temperature differential of the air going through it. When a vehicle isn't moving it relies on a fan(s) to create airflow over the external exchanger which doesnt generate enough airflow on a hot day to allow for the system to remain efficient. Systems can vary with refrigerant used, exchanger sizes, fan cfm ratings, duct/mounting setups - it gets complicated.

Is it possible to change the fan speed remotely? It's a 10 min walk to my car from work, so I usually start it as I'm leaving and it's still blowing warm air for some time after I get to the car (cabin temp 50+ when I first start it)

I only manually set the lowest air speed in my Seal and haven't had an issue with it not being cold enough (incl the 38 degree day last weekend). Mainly due to the overbearing noise at higher speeds. From experience, max fan speed was never as effective as lower speeds in other cars too. Maybe it's a placebo thing where because it's louder, it should cool quicker but it might not always be the case.

30-35 degrees celcius? that's warm. we're usually around 40 degrees celcius here in Indonesia.

No, for some reason they don’t have a fan control option in the app. It’s a weird app in a lot of ways to be honest.

OMG please start reading the owner's manual. Simply go to AC setting and change the Mode from Eco (default) to Comfort. Problem solved! Eco is more energy efficient, but doesn't work as effective for heating or cooling. What you are experiencing. Comfort mode uses slightly more energy, but overall works more like what you are probably expecting (compared to other cars). My fan speed is always 2 or 3. Anything higher and it's too noisy and blows too much hot (winter) or cold (summer) air.

Astrarle 2025-12-14 03:30

Hi, apologies I forgot to mention it. My AC has always been on comfort mode. I read the manual when I got the car. The information I mentioned above is with the AC set to comfort mode instead of eco mode.

My AC wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t great. Mentioned it at the 1 year service and they dropped the gas from the system, confirmed there was 800g of gas in the system when it should have 1600g. MRegassed it and it’s worked great since.

ggeldenhuys 2025-12-14 10:56

👍 Then that is very weird.

Astrarle 2025-12-14 12:03

I may try asking them about it at my next service

Use closed circuit option when cooling down the car, in my case 10 minutes = from 39 to 29 degrees Celsius, so don't expect miracles with 10 minutes cooling.
