Looking for feedback on Seal U DMI vs Seal U EV (test-drive impressions)

I’m planning to get the BYD Seal U DMI (hybrid), but I only managed to test-drive the fully electric Seal U. The EV felt good overall, but two things bothered me: * On the German Autobahn it felt a bit unstable, almost like it was catching wind. * The suspension didn’t feel great — even small uneven roads made the car bounce a bit inside. Has anyone experienced the same with the Seal U EV? And more importantly: **Is the DMI hybrid any different in terms of stability and suspension feel, or is it basically the same setup?** Any real-world feedback would help a lot!

I might be wrong but seems like suspension is the same, regardless whether it is hybrid or full-blown EV. Got my hybrid after mazda 3 sedan 2017, felt the suspension is superior on BYD vs mazda but perhaps it is just a matter of a low profile tires on mazda, when even a stone on the plane road felt distinctive. Also, i feel all SUV are a bit unstable vs low profile cars (=sedans) after 120, though might be personal impression.

I can agree on that, it's an SUV. Comparable cars in this class only have a harder suspension if explicit asking and paying for it Q5 with air suspension or Tiguan R type. However the suspension is for this type of class how I expect. Drove several times, from Austria V-Max A94 and A96 in south germany on different good and bad condition sections. It felt as it felt comfortable, but never unstable. Impression over all since August, never regret. Took long from psychology site swapping toward the thought of a Chinese manufacture. My researches over all 2-3 month before making test drive. We knew next car must be a hybrid or diesel, EV was not a choice. Hybrid with max. EV range, station wagon or SUV. The only hybrid system reaching 100-125 km EV only, was last year released from VAG group. Alternative was than from 1st may release Seal U DMI Comfort. However Tiguan hybrid and Q5 Hybrid are comparable. Her in Austria 69.900 or 75.000 with same configuration as Seal u DMi. For the more payment of 30.000 you can buy an extra PV System, converter and batteries for your home of min 20kwp and 20kw.

If you're driving on the Autobahn, I recommend the EV. This may seem counterintuitive, but the thing with the DMI is that once the battery runs out(which happens faster at high speeds of course), the engine will rev to charge the battery and propel the vehicles, which leads to a constant droning sound. The DMI engine alone has barely over 100PS (the AWD is slightly better at 140PS), and with the vehicle weighing 2 tons, it will struggle once the battery runs out. If you're driving less than say 70km, it should still be fine, but anything above that the engine will drone on and on since it's relatively underpowered in that use case.

Thanks for the detailed reply. In the past months of driving, did you ever have any negative experiences with the car? I’ve seen a few comments about infotainment issues and small software glitches. Did you notice anything like that? And overall, did you ever feel uncomfortable in terms of tech reliability, safety, or driving comfort?

Thanks for the feedback. I can’t really consider an EV because I don’t have home charging, and I’m a bit range-anxious, so a hybrid is a better fit for me. Are you driving the Seal U fully electric version?

I'm driving a Sealion 7 full EV. So same same but different. My friend has the Seal U DMi, I ever did one long highway drive with him at about 110km/h, it does drone quite a bit. To be honest with you, if you need the high speed driving, I think currently non of BYD's products are gonna cut it for you. You just have a very different use case compared to everyone else. Maybe consider other plug in hybrids that still have a decently strong engine to fall back on? Anyways if you don't have home charging it also kinda defeats the purpose of this plug in hybrid.

Don't agree 100% with comment before. However, when you make a long trip with Autobahn, you of course don't drive the car in EV. If I make a day trip long distance 500-700km I switch to hybrid from beginning an use SOC save mode 60-70%. It's wrong to compare a Hybrid with an EV, you can't. You can't compare a diesel with EV either. Find out what you need, what are your actual environmental circumstances.

I think at the end of the day he has to drive the DMi to see if the engine noise is tolerable or not at that speed. Also keeping in mind he doesn't want a home charger, i think generally everything BYD sells just doesn't work right for his use case.

How about a take over? Does it feel unsafe? The comfort has 1 electric motor on the front wheels while the design has AWD so faster take over. That's my only concern and doubt. Thanks for sharing
