Considering a Seal Performance

JuniorInevitable1731 | 2025-10-18 09:09 | 13 views

Hi all. Looking for wisdom. Considering buying a Seal Performance. Interested in thoughts (pros and cons). I live in Canberra. Will drive from time-to-time to my parents on the NSW Central Coast. Interested if it would make it on a charge (~400km) as I’ve read distance claimed is hard to achieve. Cheers

I have the Seal Premium in WA. Range is very dependent on driving style, setup and road / weather conditions. Spring, Autumn and Parts of Summer I can get the usage down to 12.7kwh per 100km. Winter I struggle to get it below 15-16. This is doing a highway commute of about 76km each way. High Regen is great in urban areas. I turn it off for long freeway driving unless I’m doing to work commute and run into stop/start traffic. Weirdly I find eco mode to be the worst for range. I’ll get 500km out of mine with steady driving, performance would be less due to the extra motori suspect. This is all personal experience / suspicions so others may have different results in different parts of Aus.

I just have the premium and have run a full 500km on the freeway. I wouldn't be hugely comfortable going further and got home with about 5% left. The performance should still be ok. Just make sure to drive one. I like my car but it's not what I'd call a sporty ride. I know the suspension is different and now being updated again but I'd be surprised if it were wallowy and sloppy still as that's how Chinese cars are. We have just bought a P2 performance which drives and rides much better from a sporting standpoint. Edit - oh from the positive column 19k km and entirely trouble free which is better than some EV owners experience with other brands!

I have a Seal performance and I have all of 2 points left on my license... Worth it. Also yeah should make 400km easy.

JuniorInevitable1731 2025-10-18 09:54

Thank you. Appreciate it.

JuniorInevitable1731 2025-10-18 09:56

Great to hear. Thanks.

JuniorInevitable1731 2025-10-18 09:57

Classic! Cheers.

I’m in a similar position. Torn between it and the Sealion 7 Performance. I felt like the interior and finish of the Sealion was a bit more polished. But we’ve already got a 4wd so liked the idea of a sedan. Such a hard decision!

Natecfg 2025-10-18 10:23

I have a seal performance. If im on the highway I gets just over 400ks out of it. Its fast as fuck and really kool. Enjoy.

f1mani 2025-10-18 10:58

My wife has the performance now nearly 1.5yrs. I would agree with comments that its not sporty but still seriously fast while being comfy and spacious

JuniorInevitable1731 2025-10-18 11:00

Thanks. I have a 2021 N-Line Passat sedan that I love because of comfort and space. I appreciate the Seal won’t have as much boot space but sounding more like it ticks the boxes, especially the quick takeoff at traffic lights.

Bought a Performance about 4 weeks ago. Haven’t done 400km on a charge but have gone close, without deliberately stretching it. Drove Brisbane to Mackay in a day, charging every 3 hours or so. And that was on normal regen. Drove back on high regen and got slightly better energy consumption. Averaging 20 kWh/100km which means over 400km range. Around town usually 18-19 kWh/100km

f1mani 2025-10-18 11:28

Yea, it's faster than my ice stinger gt :) also with the color choice, please don't even think of the black. It just puts everything out there.

JuniorInevitable1731 2025-10-18 11:30

Thank you. I’m aiming for the Atlantis Grey (blue) with white as the second option. Black wasn’t an option, having had a black golf in the past. :-)

Sweet-Ad2579 2025-10-18 12:04

Test drive the premium and put it in sports mode and see if you actually feel the need for more power or if that extra range is more to your liking. The premium is plenty fast - on paper as fast as a wrx but feels way faster

JuniorInevitable1731 2025-10-18 12:18

Thanks for sharing. I was also looking at the Sealion 7 My wife has a RAV 4 Hybrid so I don’t think we need another SUV. When I asked AI about a comparison it gave it to the Sealion based on heated steering wheel, back seats and the boot space. For me, my adult kids have their own cars and mostly travel to/from work alone so leaning to something more like my Passat.

JuniorInevitable1731 2025-10-18 12:19

Thanks. Really helpful. I am yet to get into the Seal (just seen in on the road or parked). Hoping for a test drive next week.

JuniorInevitable1731 2025-10-18 12:28

Thanks. Looking forward to test driving it and getting a feel for what the 3.8s is like in real life.

Rogue01aus 2025-10-18 12:30

Ridiculously quick off the line. Never gets old. You're looking at $100k for anything close. Great grand tourer. Plenty of room in the back seats. Ride is good. Headroom is good. Glass roof doesn't really let in heat (I lived in rural SW QLD with it), but does make everything feel more spacious and just the right increase in lighting. Electronic aids are mostly good. Steering wheel feels great. The boot is surprisingly deep and spacious, yet will probably annoy at how low in height it can sometimes feel. Seats are fantastic, very adjustable, and the heating and cooling is great. Headrest is plush. Sound system is good quality but unfortunately can't get loud enough to cause hearing damage, does seem to have a difference whether you use it over Android Auto or the inbuilt app. User interface is good and has been improved over several versions based on feedback. Wireless smartphone connection is great - it's fast, good integration with vehicle. Head up display is great. Adaptive Cruise control is very good. Auto driving cruise control is good for the proper highways, not good enough on outback roads. Range is >400km but you'll be among the first to get 500 I reckon.😆 Front cross traffic alert is a bit sensitive on roundabouts but was tweaked in an update. I get the odd beep now and again as a warning, which seems a little cautious to me. Had the brakes slam on once around 6-7 months ago but I think that's going to be expected and par for the course in (all) vehicles from now on in order to get their ancap or equivalent ratings. It's insanely quick. Front end rising up, gut squashing, nether tingling, roller coaster launch quick. That alone has been worth the purchase for me. Surprising motorcycles with how fast you gap them at consecutive traffic lights has been a great bonus, and I'm a rider myself. If you're interested in the Performance, you're probably going to have regrets or what ifs if you don't get it. No one regrets getting the fast model especially when there is so little to compromise on (some range?). It's honestly crazy just how affordable this car is for the performance, comfort, and tech you get. Happy to answer any questions. - 2024 Shark Grey Performance, 19k KMs. Rural QLD, and Brisbane and SC driving.

JuniorInevitable1731 2025-10-18 12:33

Appreciate it!

Caughtguy 2025-10-18 12:37

I’ve got a performance, I average around 18.5kwh/100. Provided it’s not above 30degrees or below 10 degrees I’d be comfortable doing a 400km trip.

JuniorInevitable1731 2025-10-18 12:38

Thank you!

JuniorInevitable1731 2025-10-18 12:39

Super helpful with all the detail. Appreciate it!

I’ve test driven a bunch of EVs over the last few weeks, including the Seal Performance, and I’m torn between it and the IM5. I found the Seal was very easy to drive but didn’t feel particularly sporty compared to the IM5 that really feels like a sports car in comparison. Both have a decent amount of space and a tonne of features. The IM5 performance just seemed to be that next step up in everything.

staresawkwardly7 2025-10-18 22:47

I'm doing Newcastle to Canberra in my Premium later this month - as people have said, 500km is about the max in highway driving so it would make it with range to spare, but to be on the safe side, I'm stopping at Sutton Forest for a 20 minute rest. Honestly, Canberra to Central Coast would be doable in the Performance no worries, but I wouldn't want to do it without a quick break for my own fatigue management.

TurboTaxi81 2025-10-18 23:44

I've got a Performance and live in Canberra. Based on how mine does a trip to Sydney, I think you'll get to Central Coast no worries. Is great to drive on the highway. That trip on the Hume is a bit up and down and does chew a bit of power. I think I used about 60% battery for 300km so you should be good. And I don't care what all the Premium owners say in terms of common sense - the Performance is extraordinary. Plus the AWD is a good thing to have too so isn't all about straight line speed. I came from a VA WRX and I'm genuinely surprised how agile this thing feels. Doesn't feel anywhere as heavy as it actually is!

JuniorInevitable1731 2025-10-19 00:54

Thank you. I saw the IM5 but thought there was a bit of a gap in price for what you get but haven’t driven either of them. Appreciate the feedback.

JuniorInevitable1731 2025-10-19 00:56

Thanks. Really helpful. I usually drive all the way through from Canberra to CC sometimes with a break at Sutton Forest or Pheasant’s Nest but that is a quick coffee. Will have to factor in a longer break to get charge, especially if chargers aren’t immediately available

JuniorInevitable1731 2025-10-19 00:59

That’s so helpful. Filling me in the Performance direction.

staresawkwardly7 2025-10-19 01:19

Download an app like plug share and check beforehand. I tend to pick a place with several chargers and double check before going if any are broken. It's good to have a backup as well.

CanberraPhoto 2025-10-19 02:44

Also check the Zeekr 7X. I’m test driving it this week

East-India-TradingCo 2025-10-19 21:52

I recently test drove the seal and was really disappointed in the responsiveness of the accelerator pedal. I would guess it would lag by like .5s when you put your foot down. Coming from a tesla, when you put your foot down, your neck gets snapped immediately. Seal felt more like ice-y than as an EV in this regard. Also charging speeds, when doing multiple fast charges within a trip, seem to really drop off and increase waiting times a lot Otherwise, great car! Blade battery gen2 cant come fast enough

Rogue01aus 2025-10-19 22:13

I definitely chose the Seal for its ICE similarities (not in acceleration though) whereas the Tesla felt less connected to the driver, and the little quirks of the latest models design changes, like indicator, gear change, and there was something else, were odd. I like driving cars. I want to be in a car and not a simulator. I really wanted to like the Tesla, it had the name and the support in Australia whereas BYD and the Seal were new and even the price wasn't too far away, but I couldn't get over those downsides. Re the acceleration, and might be a silly question, but were you in a Performance and in Performance mode? Eco and Normal have the delay you noticed and Eco won't give you full power anyway. Performance doesn't mess around and can be twitchy. I haven't had the problem with multiple charges that you mentioned. Throttling is standard for all EV isn't it? I got full DC speed until 60-70% before it started to lower. I charge at home now on 32a so haven't used a DC in a while, and it's been even longer since I did a trip requiring several charges. What car did you end up getting?

CasualJan 2025-10-20 00:00

MY25 Seal Performance here in Brisbane. You've gotten plenty of feedback on range, and I think that question is answered. I just wanted to answer some of the notes about ride. MY25 Seal Performance comes with adaptive dampers. (DiSus-C) I recently went for a mountain drive and compared Normal and Sport modes. Sport definitely firms up the suspension and the car feels very responsive on mountain roads. The steering weight is good, and the "feel" of the car let me place it pretty accurately on the road. Another post talked about a bit of a delay on the throttle - Sport mode definitely makes that more responsive too. We've had our Seal since May this year, and are very happy with it. Spacious, fast as all hell, and (for us) solar powered. We have absolutely no regrets!

woodman8u 2025-10-20 02:44

2025 Seal Performance here. I go from far Northside to far Southside for work every day so mostly city with about 15km of highway. Driving sensibly and sticking to the speed limit I get about 15KW/100km real world. That would get me 546 km 100%-0% I have tried about 10 different public chargers so far and never had an issue with it charging. Anywhere from 6.4kw/hr from a 7kw AC to 128kw/h from a 150KW/HR DC. Oh and my best 0-100 time so far is 3.4 seconds 😁.

JuniorInevitable1731 2025-10-20 07:41

Thank you. Really great additional feedback. Appreciate it.

JuniorInevitable1731 2025-10-20 09:31

Thank you. I’ll be heading from Tuggers to Barton daily.

East-India-TradingCo 2025-10-20 21:55

Fortunately I have an older model with both stalks. So yes the no stalk thing would also turn me away. As for feeling of the steering I liked tesla more, it felt more direct. The seal was quite more comfy with more body roll. The one I test drove was the Seal Design as they didnt have the awd on hand, but I have lined up a test drive with a awd one aswell. Theres still hope as accelerator pedalwould be a dealbreaker. I enjoy the snappyness way too much to give it up. I didn’t decide yet, im also evaluating the BMW i4 and new ix3, Mercedes CLA EQ, VW ID7. While Seal will beat all of those in Performance and pricing, the others may be ahead in Features or comfort or trunk space or dealers/mechanics being closer to me.

Rogue01aus 2025-10-20 23:18

I saw an i4 and I liked it but it didn't have the performance to price I was after... and that front end is still very polarising and I'm not convinced I can live with it. The EQ range was too expensive. The others weren't an option. I honestly wanted a V8 Mustang, but with four doors and seats, more performance, more luxury, more range, and literally half the price thanks to government EV incentives (let alone running costs) the Seal was an obvious choice. No regrets. I'll get a Mustang another time if that itch is still there and I can accept the trade off in performance for sound! I'm interested to see what you end up deciding on! The accelerator would be a deal breaker for me too. Lag like that is dangerous.

Sweet-Ad2579 2025-10-21 04:58

yeah just make sure you put it in sports mode it is really boring in eco mode :D (little scroll wheel on the bottom left of the gear shifter area on the console, and it tells you on the screen what mode it is in and turns red on the top)

Icefeldt 2025-10-29 22:08

With a BYD Seal Excellence AWD and intelligent cruise control set to 120km/h on the German Autobahn, you get 4km per 1% of battery. Therefore "theoretically" you can drive 400km when you start with 100% and drive it down to 0%. But as this is not really something anyone would do you would need to add, at least, a short stop to recharge a few percentage. (tested at ~25°C)

Imaginary-Pen2577 2025-11-09 02:35

I have Seal Premium in WA too. Average power use over 15 months has been 14.3KW per 100 km. I drive mostly in sport mode.
