Seal Premium premature tyre wear

TerryTowellinghat | 2024-11-29 02:21 | 20 views

I’ve had my Seal Premium for just over six months and have done just over 12,000 km. Following the advice I was given at my 5k service I took it in today to rotate the tyres. I was shocked to find out that they couldn’t do it because the rear tyres are already down to the indicator bars and due to be replaced! I was told that it should be a 60,000 km tyre normally, and I expected to get less than that given the weight of the car, but 12,000 km is just terrible for a tyre that costs close to $500. If this is normal I will be spending nearly $2,000 a year on rear tyres alone! I will admit that I am routinely heavy on the accelerator and quick around corners, but not to the extent of ever spinning the wheels, skidding or sliding and I’ve only locked up the brakes once, or rather the ADAS did, to save the life of a motorcyclist that ran a red light in front of me. Has anyone had a similar experience of super fast tyre wear? I’m waiting for a call back from the Newstead service centre to take it in for an inspection by BYD.

We've got over 10,000ks on our seal and all the tyres still look new. It is 10,000 highway ks though so that may be a factor.

Right foot is the problem. You don't need to spin them to wear them down. There's up to 230kw and 390nm of torque being fed towards those tyres, with less loss through the drive train than a petrol car (~15% vs ~30% ICE) If it was just the weight being the cause, you'd expect all four to wear similarly. It's been funny seeing all the Performance Model owners on Facebook saying "I always run in sports mode" recently wearing tyres out at a similar rate. Suddenly they've all gone quiet. Edit: just measured mine, 5.5mm front and rear after 7500km to the bottom of the channel, on the outer channel. Probably 50% highway/non stop running (late at night, so very few red lights to stop at)

My other car is a G6e turbo with 270kw and 533Nm that I drive just as enthusiastically and my tyres have always lasted an appropriate distance. Getting a fifth of the expected distance seems extreme for what is still normal driving within the capability of the car. The Seal is only 14% heavier than the Falcon.

The Falcon doesn't have all that torque from zero though. EV have a basically flat torque 'curve' from the start, tapers off at higher rpm. https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Torque-Curves-of-Electric-Motor-and-Internal-Combustion-Engine-2-The-electric-motors-can_fig5_370553199

Too much ‘fully siiiik’ driving mate 😛

TerryTowellinghat 2024-11-29 06:13

Except that the Seal doesn’t. You’ve got one. It doesn’t feed the wheels like that. The iTAC system reduces power on take-off to make it feel more like an ICE vehicle. The Falcon jumps off the line way faster than the Seal and gets to 100 km/h almost a second faster.

I have the Seal Performance and have just been told that will need four new tyres at 15,000kms. I’m disappointed but have now taken some actions to mitigate further problems. I now keep the car in eco mode (not sports mode ) and don’t take off from the lights like a formula driver

TerryTowellinghat 2024-11-29 07:04

Boo. Thanks for the info. It must be especially disappointing for a performance owner. You could have saved 10 grand if you don’t get to use the car to its full ability. I could deal with being slower off the mark, but having less power while underway will be disappointing for being to overtake quickly where necessary. Have you managed to find any more durable options for your next set of tyres?

PalmTree888 2024-11-29 07:06

Same car (Premium) and it’s due for replacement soon. Car is at 25,000km and yes this is the soonest I’ve ever needed to replace tyres for a car.

Qasaya0101 2024-11-29 07:15

I mean my record was 7000km for all 4 tyres on a WRX.. so I can be done..

red_dragin 2024-11-29 08:21

Ah well it must be entirely the tyres fault that only the rears wore out then

shadjor 2024-11-29 17:22

I just get use to switching from eco to sports when I need it which is almost never. From a passenger comfort perspective ECO is pretty good because it smooths out a lot of the surging you get with the instant power.

SpinnerKontrol 2024-11-30 00:49

Performance @26k here and still have a pretty decent amount of meat on all four.

TerryTowellinghat 2024-11-30 01:37

Do you put your foot down with any regularity? If I could have got about this distance with a set of tyres that would have been more in line with my expectations.

SpinnerKontrol 2024-11-30 07:19

I do when I drive it (but often there's puppies in the back, so gotta be tame anyway). 4000km of the travel has been 2 road trips between Melbourne & Adelaide, but most of the driving is my partner's daily commute (120km round trip 5x/wk) and not through heavy traffic areas. All those factors probably contribute to how healthy the tyres still are.

TerryTowellinghat 2024-11-30 12:01

Alright I’m now committed to driving my car in eco mode in hope of avoiding a $2000 billl each year for tyres. No lie my more powerful g6e turbo, that I have chosen to abandon due to fuel prices, kept tyres for 50 or 60 thousand kilometres. $2000 a year on tyres probably negates my fuel savings, particularly gutting as I get a a 25% discount on fuel because I work for a fossil fuel supplier. I thank the people who have given me real info on their own situation rather than just said that my acceleration is the problem., and the people who have just said I should drive like a grandma can fuck right off. When my lease is up I will be handing the car back because 12000 km on $500 tyres is just bad engineering. I’ve got an appointment on 11.12 with a BYD service centre, but unless they can point to a particular fault in the suspension or something I’m nopeing out at the end of my lease.

emptybottle2405 2024-12-01 14:23

Haha I was about the same. I did a track day and melted them after a few laps

I have Seal Premium, just on 11k on the clock and so far no issues. The other thing is the road I drive the most on it's absolute rubbish as they started roadworks and govt canned it leaving the road in sorry state. I also dont drive like a Nana, as why would you when you get car like these. If you wanted to drive slow and economical then you'd buy a Leaf or something 😀 I guess the weight of the car could as you mentioned be over rated for long life on these tyres, and also could even just even be you got a shit pair of factory tyres? I think from memory in my old Focus I had even more expensive factory tyres and they didn't even last 10k on a lighter less grunty car? Could be worth when you change evaluating after that? And maybe try another brand? For me even if I was paying 2k per year on tyres would still be easily a cost saving.

Sweet. Thanks for your input.

I've just ticked over 20000 in my premium and the continentals are very worn and need replacing.   I'm not overly lead footed and had them rotated at 10k so I'm very disappointed in the continentals and I want to try something different. There seems to be quite a limited selection on the premium's size (235 45 r19) so I'm very interested to know if anyone else has tried something else and can report any findings.  Definitely not keen on having to buy a set of tyres each year!

TerryTowellinghat 2025-03-10 10:57

Sorry for your situation but I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one. I’m at over 17k now and can’t really put off replacing them much longer. I’ve also found selection to be limited especially when some that are the right size aren’t rated for the weight. Any alternatives I’ve found (and I’m sorry I don’t remember brands right now) were around the same price at around $500 per tyre.

Infamous_Trick3016 2026-01-13 09:26

Byd Seal design and I only have 12k kms on rear tyres and also had to replace them, top of the range Continental tyres and unfortunately I don't drive like I robbed it.
