I work with BYD in Melbourne, happy to share what I’ve seen. It really depends on how you plan to use the car day to day. How many kilometres do you usually drive on a normal weekday, and is that mostly city or freeway driving? Also, are you mainly prioritising lower running costs, performance, or interior space? Once those are clearer, it’s much easier to tell whether the Sealion 6 Premium is the right fit or if another option would suit you better.

I'd be using it for work commute which will be city driving in Sydney around 35-40kms back and forth. And weekend getaways whenever I get a chance. I'm looking for something which is an overall good buy, so a mix of the 3 things you mentioned would be great. It would be my first car so I don't exactly know what would be best for me.

Thanks for sharing a bit more about your driving needs, that really helps. For a daily Sydney commute of around 35–40 km round trip, plus the occasional weekend getaway, you’re actually in a great position to go electric, especially as a first car. Based on what you’re looking for, the Sealion 6 and Sealion 7 are both excellent all-round choices. They offer strong performance, plenty of interior space, and a very comfortable drive. The Sealion 6 is front-wheel drive as standard, while the Sealion 7 is rear-wheel drive, and both models offer all-wheel drive on higher trims if you’d like extra grip and performance. With an average of around 50 km per day, the Sealion 7’s 480 km range means you’d only be using roughly 10% of the battery for your commute. Even using a standard wall socket, a full top-up would take around 4–5 hours overnight. With current rebates and BYD’s smart charging features, your daily commuting cost would be under $1, which is a big saving compared to petrol. Plus, Australia’s charging network is universal and well developed, so road trips around NSW or even up to the Gold Coast are very manageable. If you’d like, I can help narrow it down further based on budget, trim level, or whether you value performance, comfort, or tech a bit more.

Thanks a lot for this. However, I'm not ready to go full electric yet. Like I mentioned in my post, I don't have access to home charging. Might be able to work something out, but I'll primarily rely on public fast chargers. So it's Sealion 6 that I'd be eyeing for. The fwd seems good enough for me. My main concern is if it's still the right call to go for it if I'm predominantly going to be using it on petrol.

The Sealion 6 is a plug-in hybrid, so even if you’re predominantly driving on petrol, it will still operate efficiently like a traditional hybrid. The petrol engine works together with the electric motor, and regenerative braking helps recharge the battery as you drive, so you’re never reliant on charging to keep the car running. When the battery charge is above around 30%, fuel consumption can be as low as approximately 2 L/100 km, as the vehicle relies more heavily on electric drive and hybrid assistance during normal city driving. All BYD vehicles in Australia also come with a portable 8-amp AC charger (around 1.2 kW output) that can be plugged into a standard household power point. This gives you the flexibility to top up the battery whenever it’s convenient, even without a dedicated home charger. If you do occasionally plug in, whether at home or at public chargers, you’ll gain the benefit of electric-only driving for short trips, while still having the peace of mind of petrol for longer journeys. For your usage, the FWD Sealion 6 remains a very sensible and well-balanced option.

Is there a byd equivalent of a Mazda cx3? Or something similar? My partner wants to get the specces out cx3 for a little run around/ grocery trip store and she keeps saying she likes the look of the byd’s so I thought I’d suss

The closest BYD equivalent to a Mazda CX-3 would be the BYD Atto 2. It’s a compact SUV style EV that’s perfect for city driving, quick trips and grocery runs, with great efficiency and low running costs. If your partner likes the look of BYD, the Atto 2 offers a modern design, advanced tech and a very smooth drive. We also have other models depending on the space and features you’re after, so I’d be happy to help you compare options. Feel free to DM me for more info, pricing or to book a test drive!
