Seal Excellence vs Sealion 7 Design

Bloodypizza | 2026-02-12 20:28 | 2 views

Hi, I'm considering buying either the Seal Excellence or the Sealion 7 Design. I prefer the look of the SL7 a bit more than the seal and I like a soft and comfortable ride and higher seating which is why I first considered the Seal U, but the power is to low for the weight imo. So I switched my focus to the SL7 and the Seal. Preferably I would get the SL7 with the heads up display since I really like that, but its an additional 4k for minor upgrades. \-How is smooth is the ride in the Seal? \-And since I never had a heads up display, how nice is it to have it after multiple months? I've heard from multiple people that they just ignore it after a view months and don't care about it. Best case would be to test drive both cars, but the BYD stores near me only have no cars to test except the Seal U DM-I.

You're paying extra for the power, not the head up display. The HUD is a nice feature, but I bought a Seal Excellence for the power.

It's an EV, it's already powerful. Not sure why you need so much power unless you plan on racing your car? I have the SL7 design, which is single motor, and has plenty of power for whatever i need. Overtaking, motorway driving, racing nob heads. I've never felt i don't have enough power. SL7 is bigger, has more utility due to it's size, and imo looks nicer

I've had a Sealion 7 for about 6 months now. I still use the HUD every time I drive. I use it more than I use the normal dash display. I probably wouldn't pay $4k for it though, in Aus it's standard on both trim levels.

After 7 months I'am still a HUGE fan of the HUD. On most drives I do not even glance at the drivers display once, because the speed via HUD is always perfectly in view. In the Sealion 7 you would even have navigation directions in the HUD, therefore even on navigated drives you would not need to divert your view to the main infotainment screen in many situations. HUD is a must have for me from now on, on any future car

The not enough power comment was for the seal U which only comes with 220 HP, which I think might be a bit low for a 2,3 ton car. The SL7 has enough with 313 in the base config imo.

The SL7 has three configurations in germany. Comfort, design and excellence. Both design and excellence come with 530hp AWD but only the excellence comes with the HUD.

The comfort and design both have vegan leather, if you prefer real leather, the excellence has it. So for the design vs excellence question, you pay more for: HUD bigger battery (10kWh more over design) real leather seats So it's not just a 4k premium for "only" the HUD, you get quite a bit more, which IMO is worth it.

I get your point, but I don't really need the bigger battery, and the seal design would already be pushing my budget. Otherwise I would go for the SL7 excellence any day.

I’ve got the Design, and honestly I don’t feel like it needs anything that the Excellence gives extra. Sure the real leather might be nice, but the plastic stuff is good enough, and I can’t really tell the difference. Doesn’t need a hud, and the extra battery really only adds maybe 30km to 50km of real world range. Even the faster charging, while nice to have, doesn’t make too much real world difference in Ireland where most chargers are 400V. To be perfectly honest, the Comfort is good enough for the vast majority of people. I went with the Design as we’ve got a caravan, and the Design was available immediately vs 4-6 month wait on the Excellence.

"Best case would be to test drive both cars, but the BYD stores near me only have no cars to test except the Seal U DM-I." So ... you not gonna test drive the cars just order one deciding due to what we write here? :D Come on man. And decide, Seal and Sealion 7 is like two totally different planets, ask yourself what you want: 1. sporty sedan with great handling / cornering / driving performance 2. family car with soft suspension, not a sport car at all. I've had a Head-up display in my previous car and been using it for 5 years ... my Seal doesn't have it, practically no difference, at least more visibility on the windshield, for me if i have it or not makes no difference, i'm totally fine without it. Higher seating in Sealion 7 is a little bit ... shitty: [https://www.reddit.com/r/BYD/comments/1mq9re3/seat\_position/](https://www.reddit.com/r/BYD/comments/1mq9re3/seat_position/) How tall are you?

Bloodypizza 2026-02-13 20:38

Of course I want to test drive the cars first and I finally found an byd seller quite a bit away that has one to test next week. I just wanted opinions of people that already have one. The seating position is a good point, I'm also exactly 193cm, so it could be a problem. Since you have the seal, how is the suspension? I normally like the soft comfortable suspension more then the hard sports car suspension, but I wanted a bit more power than the seal u.

Nvm j thought WE we're taking about Seal.

Here in Germany both the design and excellence are 530HP AWD. I just looked at both today. Going to go for the design the extra money isn't worth the slightly bigger battery 91.3KHW vs 82.4KHW, 50km more distance and HUD.

Ach sorry dachte es geht um den Seal.
