Just hit 20k kms in my BYD Seal, here’s my efficiency / cost data

RevLimiter999 | 2026-02-04 21:44 | 45 views

I’ve been tracking every single charge since I started driving my BYD Seal, and I figured some of you might find these stats useful. This is after pretty much one year (January last year). I've covered about 21k kms. And I've religiously charged my BYD at home haha. I've spent about 1000$ in charging costs. https://preview.redd.it/5lz932qirjhg1.png?width=1067&format=png&auto=webp&s=a78d74765686593881d3c2e80662afe098015090 The efficiency has been remarkably consistent, averaging around 6.74 km/kWh => 14.85 kWh/100km I do alot of highway driving. Coming from a petrol car, spending only this amount to cover this much kms is pretty damn awesome. Seal's definitely a winner to me! Very Happy with It! Happy to answer any questions about the charging patterns or the logs!

You're a nerd. I am too. I've tried this half a dozen times. You're just more committed.

Purple-Intern9790 2026-02-04 21:53

I have the Sealion 7 and do 90% highway at 100-110km/h, average is 17.8kwh/100km, the seal is much more aerodynamic by the looks of it haha

RevLimiter999 2026-02-04 21:56

Thank you! I'll take the compliment haha

farqueue2 2026-02-04 21:58

Hehe yeah I'm not trying to be derogatory. It's a shame that the car itself doesn't give us some of this data. I often charge at home and my car is also driven by my wife and I'll never be able to get her to record data

RevLimiter999 2026-02-04 21:58

I pretty much do the same you, if I were to say, to me is more like 75% highway perhaps. So the difference could also come from doing a little more city driving then you. Either way these figures are really remarkable. So happy that I got it!!

RevLimiter999 2026-02-04 22:03

Oh yea, the app that I use does support Vehicle Sharing, meaning she could have her own account and log the data... but she just doesn't care about that stuff... you know how it is... Anyways I do most of the driving always so no big deal.

farqueue2 2026-02-04 22:05

What app?

RevLimiter999 2026-02-04 22:14

It's called Autozis, it has good support for EVs.

SpeedySealBR 2026-02-04 22:15

Wow, that efficiency is incredible. In my seal, I drove at 60mph on the motorway and hit 25kwh/100 miles at the lowest! I'm typically sat between 33-38 depending on conditions.

RevLimiter999 2026-02-04 22:17

I mean, that's miles right? I'm not used to miles, how would that translate to the efficiency in kms?

SpeedySealBR 2026-02-04 22:26

Very true, apologies should have done the conversion, but approximately 21kw/100km, still not anywhere close to yours in daily usage. Lowest ive achieved is about on par, however, maybe I do just need to drive more softly.

Speeder172 2026-02-04 22:49

What Seal do you own? I own a Seal AWD and the average is closer to 21kw/100 while driving on the highway at 120km/h.

randomOldFella 2026-02-04 22:51

It's 15.5kWh/100km 1mile = 1.6km

RevLimiter999 2026-02-04 22:59

Mine is the Premium, I think it's typically more efficient then the AWD is it not?

Different-Highway-88 2026-02-04 23:37

Based on the 6.74km/kWh and full charge range of 413 kms, I'd say they have the Seal Design? (61 kWh battery). That is probably the most efficient of the three trim levels (though shorter range than the others due to smaller battery).

Numerous-Implement47 2026-02-04 23:39

I think this is why potentially others aren't getting the numbers you are with the Premium which isnt in the Europe market. They only get 2, and assume the AWD is the most popular? No idea why they didn't get the Premium mid spec which is more efficient but has the larger Battery pack still along with the HUD etc. I get the same numbers over 30k km since having it.

Different-Highway-88 2026-02-04 23:39

This is awesome data! Well done!! Can I just ask how you got the actual energy deposited in the battery when charging? I'm assuming at home charging means AC? Did you account for the losses from wall socket to battery?

Numerous-Implement47 2026-02-04 23:42

We have Premium mid Spec in Australia. Same battery pack size as the AWD, more powerful motor than base model, and some of the extras like HUD, heated and ventilated seats etc.

Suntzu_AU 2026-02-04 23:43

That's some good efficiency.I'm tempted to buy a seal but I need 400km of highway range between charges. Not sure if I can get that at 110kmh in Australia. I haven't spent any money on charging in three years because I charge from solar and now I have a household battery to back that up.

Suntzu_AU 2026-02-04 23:44

I'm going to be buying the premium. I've driven the performance and it's fast but it's a bit gimmicky. I'd rather the extra range, efficiency and lower cost.

AmbassadorStock6678 2026-02-04 23:47

I use solar to charge my Dolphin. Costs around $0.04/KWH so from 40% to 100% which is my usual weekly charge (60kwh battery) - costs around $1.44 from loss of FIT.

RevLimiter999 2026-02-04 23:54

Yes AC. I put in the actual energy I've spent charging regardless of how much it charged. Then I put in the start and end % the car reports. This way I get accurate data for how much energy I'm actually spending, because yes, there's like about 10-15% loss typically. The app actually estimates this difference,  given the battery capacity, and the percentage gained it shows the kws that actually charged VS how much kilowatts I've spent to charge.

RevLimiter999 2026-02-04 23:57

Man, that's the dream, free energy haha. I need to figure out some solar system for myself too, surely it quickly pays itself off. By 3 years I guess it's paid your solar investment off yet or still need more time?

RevLimiter999 2026-02-04 23:59

Man awesome, yea so cheap. I guess in a way these cars "pay" themselves off if you've got access to real cheap energy. Solar is def on my radar now.

Suntzu_AU 2026-02-05 00:06

I'm on my third solar system. This is my largest as I have a new house. 13kW of panels on a 10kW inverter going into 40kWh of battery. Blackout protection.I have not touched the grid since installation. Absolutely. Fan Freaking-tastic. Subsidised by the Australian Government. We're decentralising from the electricity grid and it's going to be amazing once we have more people on it.

RevLimiter999 2026-02-05 00:22

Oh man I'm starting to envy you haha. Congrats, must really feel awesome to be independent of the grid.

blackpawed 2026-02-05 00:48

Wow, thats pretty good efficiency for highway driving - what regen and drive modes do you use?

blackpawed 2026-02-05 00:51

Same, just got an EV, looking fwd to long term usage with that. Do you charge your EV off solar or do you hit the battery for it?

IngRagSol 2026-02-05 01:13

I'm just starting and I see very conscious people in this... thanks for tdhe info and valuable knowledge...

Suntzu_AU 2026-02-05 01:47

It's a bit tricky to configure because the charger is a bit dumb and doesn't realise it's pulling from the battery or the grid. Even though it's a smart charger which does assess solar and grid usage, it just simply doesn't understand the battery. So Iavoid charging from battery as it's very inefficient and cycles the battery. I set it to only charge when there's excess solar. And I can give it a force boost if I need to charge the car.

Suntzu_AU 2026-02-05 01:48

I don't want to rub it in, but it is fucking awesome.

blackpawed 2026-02-05 02:02

Interesting, I'm looking at I suspect, a similar setup - getting a evnex E2 Plus installed, which has load and solar clamps, but I don't think its smart enough to avoid pulling from the battery. What charger did you get?

Suntzu_AU 2026-02-05 02:04

I got a BENY 22kW 3-phase solar and grid-aware charger supply/installed for $1700 in South East Queensland. Crazy cheap and has worked pretty well for three years. I don't know that there's any way to tell it that there's a battery, But it's not too difficult to work around.

Mysterious_Equal_951 2026-02-05 02:07

I own a phev BYD, so this info doesnt help me as much, as I still load on gas. Just want to know your charging habits, do you always charge to 100%, have you left your car charging even if already 100%, like a phone at night. How do you check the efficiency of the battery?

blackpawed 2026-02-05 02:09

Nice! ZJ Beny are a good brand. My install is costing $2,400, but a large chunk of that is the 20m cable run I need :( I'm not to fussed about the battery either, 99% of my charging should be during the Globird free 3 hour period (11am - 2pm).

Different-Highway-88 2026-02-05 02:19

Yeah the premium is a great option! I ended up getting the AWD because I'm still a child at heart (and no regrets). But the premium is actually a nicer ride I feel, and still extremely performant.

Different-Highway-88 2026-02-05 02:26

Oh! That's clever. The reason I asked was because I am wondering if there is a way to reverse engineer it to figure out battery degradation. (As in if there waa some way of recording the ingested charge post the AC - DC conversion, that would have been really interesting). For what it's worth I did a small test at home with the granny charger plugged into a power meter, and found that when the car (as indicated in the app/dash) was receiving 1.5kW of power, the unit was drawing 1.85kW of power. That gave me a loss of 19%. The only issue is that the car's display seems to use a floor rounding meaning 1.5 could be anywhere from 1.50 - 1.59 or so.

Different-Highway-88 2026-02-05 03:10

Yeah good call ... I totally fell for the gimmick tbh...

Suntzu_AU 2026-02-05 04:27

Yeah, that's the trick. I've got my car scheduled to run 11 to 2, full throttle at 7 kilowatts, and then it tapers back to excess solar only, though I have to do that manually at the moment. My cable run was like 2 metres, so there you go.

jeffreykuma 2026-02-05 05:19

These are incredible numbers. In summer I was on average somewhere between 15.5-19 kWh /100 km depending on my motion. Now on winter the display is portraying me 23-27. On highway/Autobahn im closer to 21-24 and now in winter 27-30 around 130-140 km/h

Speeder172 2026-02-05 06:54

Probably  As the other said, in EU we only have the Design or the AWD. I went for the AWD for the 4x4 and the fun of having 530 HP! No regrets but yeah, the consumption is high. The only time I managed to reach 16kwh/100 was on a country road and speed limit at 80km/h.

RevLimiter999 2026-02-05 07:12

Thanks! Really happy with it. What's your model?

RevLimiter999 2026-02-05 07:17

Hmm I see. I don't know a good way to figure out battery degradation. I haven't seen any real outlier that makes me go, my car is charging less then it was or holding less charge or something like that. It's only been a year so I wouldn't expect nothing noticeable...

RevLimiter999 2026-02-05 07:19

No problem! Happy to share and help!

RevLimiter999 2026-02-05 07:24

Rarely charge to 100%. Usually until 80/90%. I usually just charge it when it's about 30% I don't like letting it go lower. For the efficiency, do you mean the charging efficiency? The app tells me, it's basically a 10-15% loss, so between 85-90% efficiency. I log the kws I spent charging, the start percentage and end percentage and based on my battery capacity it does estimation on the charge efficiency.

Mysterious_Equal_951 2026-02-05 07:58

Got this! thanks!

jeffreykuma 2026-02-05 14:42

I drive the Seal Excellence

RevLimiter999 2026-02-05 14:45

I see, thanks!

blackpawed 2026-02-05 22:28

Installed before the current Energex regs, lucky! All AC chargers installed in Qld now have to be limited to 20A (4.6kw) unless you install a ripple control module which will switch it off when local demand is to high. I was quoted $400 for that. Or Dynamic Load Management done via cloud network control - no charger I'm aware of currently supports it. Sucks donkey balls.

ranezinjo 2026-02-18 08:40

Very weird. Started to track with the same app :) I have 3.1km/% max. Car didn't see temps above 9c yet.

RevLimiter999 2026-02-20 17:58

Nice. What's weird though?
