Seal AWD range

edthechimp | 2026-01-28 09:03 | 4 views

Is it normal to have less than 300km range in winter on BYD seal excellence? I just did a 57km journey and lost 20% battery. 105km/h highway at +1 Celsius in eco mode and no AC.

In today's Tribune de Genève, there was an article about the ranges of EVs in winter conditions, following a test done by the Swiss Touring Club. According to the article, the test indicated that the vehicle with the longest range was the Audi, while the BYD (Sealion 7 Excellence--- I will be collecting mine next week) came last with less than 300km. A bit disheartening piece of news but I still look very much forward to driving my new car 😎.

But if you look percent of WLTP lost it is not like that. Audi has longest range and from 719 drop to 441, 63% and BYD from502 to 293, 71%.

My seal excellence in the depth of winter typically averaged 220(354)-230(370) miles(km) 100%->~5%

What was your average energy consumption over the last 50km of the journey?

23.3 kWh/100km

Following. Same issue. Also at temperatures around 0.

Yep similar to what I'm experiencing with my Seal AWD in Ireland. I'm switching to 18 inch wheels in the next few weeks for a more comfortable ride most of all, but it might have some improvement on the efficiency as well. Also switching back to the Continental EcoContact 7 tyres from the Nexen tyres that were installed recently by the dealer, my gut feeling is that the Nexen tyres are less efficient and I find them noisier as well (but haven't actually measured this, so my gut feeling really).

Eco tires do matter a lot in EV range (10% at least). You should always check the "economy" tag on the tire model before purchase.

German ADAC (Automobile Club) tested several EV Cars. BYD sealion7 which i think is very simliar to the Seal, was Last place with 35kw/100km battery drain. So i guess the Test you read is near to the Test from the ADAC. [ADAC Test article german](https://www.adac.de/rund-ums-fahrzeug/elektromobilitaet/elektroauto/elektroauto-reichweite-im-winter-adac-test-2026/)

Problem with that test (for comparison pusposes), is that 11 cars are RWD with ~280HP and one motor and only 3 cars (Tesla/Vovo/BYD) are 500HP+, AWD and 2 motors. Would have been more comparable if all cars would have been RWD/1 motor.

Yes, it's normal, the temperature is the cause - the colder it gets, the range readuction gets bigger (higher usage in lower temperatures) ... by +1 degree i get a range reduction by +-20%. And don't use ECO mode, it's useless, might save like 1% of battery on a 100km distance: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZR3L378MCA&t=743s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZR3L378MCA&t=743s) and in some cases drains more - it has such a huge acceleration lag that you might press the pedal more due to a will to accelerate because with a light press practically nothing happens and such a hard acceleratin in ECO mode may cause higher usage than in Normal.

Byd sl7 consumption is still insane

threespire 2026-01-28 18:18

Less than 300 miles, yes - I think I get about 260 out of mine versus 323 WLTP. Less than 300km? Are you smashing it in sport mode?

Different-Highway-88 2026-01-28 19:46

Was your journey uphill somewhat? That consumption number and the slight performance degradation of the LFP with colder temperatures would match the range you are getting (as in, it doesn't seem to have any permanent issues with the battery itself). My only concern would be the relatively high consumption number if it was flat with no AC etc. Although bear in mind that the battery's thermal management was likely running so the AC was effectively still on.

We've just got 290KM from 100% down to 15% before putting some charge into it - split over 10 individual 29KM commutes. Journey is B Roads & Dual Carriageway, we both drive somewhat spirited, temp has ranged +3 to +10. In Normal mode/Normal Regen/AC & Heated Steering Wheel On 50% of the time.
