BYD surf, mini, seagull, etc.

Dwayne_p | 2025-11-24 13:38 | 19 views

I'm considering buying the BYD surf. Are there anything to look after for, is there any defects and how is the reliabilty of the car? Also, hows the handeling of the car, is it fun or sluggish? Thanks in advance.

My opinion is that, it's a good, strong, and cheap box on wheels that carries 4 people pretty spaciously. However, the infotainment is dead slow and frankly I wouldn't trust any high level ADAS on BYD anyways, so, it's something that's super cheap, has good enough space, but has not as soft of an interior finish as other competitors, and because it's more like a box it has highway noise.

As for reliability, chances are some cars will ship with issues. I would say it's too early to make general reliability claims. For now, it really depends on whether your local dealer is trustworthy and competent enough to fix these issues. As for handling, the suspension lacks good rebound damping, has high speed noise issues, but it does make up with good torque and pedal response in sport out of corners, and unlike some other BYDs the steering feedback feels pretty decent.(Maybe because the power steering isn't as strong? so there is less of a floaty feel that people love to complain about when steering is in comfort in other BYDs)

I've had mine for a week, wow, what a fun and fun car to drive. Suspension is excellent, interior finish compatible with the price (I live in an emerging country and here everything is made of low quality plastic) really an incredible car. https://preview.redd.it/k6vutnddn83g1.jpeg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=80f9e20dc464e94139947e683b391972a16b1fb8

So I reckon you tested the vehicle out. Thanks for the input. Its very hard to take the leap for it as no form of reliability article is given and I dont want to be bored when driving. But that you said it doesnt provide good rebound depending is conserting especialy with the state of the road where I live and its a very tall car for its width.

The place where i live a 1 year old BYD Dolphin 204 bhp (0-100 in 7 seconds) cost the same as new Surf 156 bhp, so maybe check it in your country? Because the answer which one is better i assume is obvious.

Im speaking in malta, and when subsidised its dirt cheap. That why im considring it lol

Where i live a new BYD Dolphin 204 bhp (60kWh battery) is only 20% more expensive than Surf 156 bhp, so maybe it also has a good price in Malta.

Yea, I will definitely look into it! The prices here are not available in the public per say. But thanks for your recommendations.

I've had a Seagull for over 6 months now, no complaints at all. Car is fun on Sport mode, only a bit slugish when you have the AC on, but that's expected... turn it off and it's a missile when launching from red lights. Defects I can't think of one, probably the fact that it doesn't has any lights on the trunk, just get a few of those clickable external led lights and you can put there and that's about it. Also, car is quite low on the door sides, so carefull with the curb when parking so you don't hit the lower plastic with them.
