The nation’s largest police fleet of Tesla Cybertrucks is set to begin patrolling the streets of Las Vegas in November thanks to a donation from a U.S. tech billionaire, raising co

*At the end of the day, though, cops may mostly enjoy simply looking badass. As Sheriff McMahill said during the press conference, the Cybertrucks are a "heck of a recruiting tool." … "Cops are gonna look kind of cool in them too, right?"* https://insideevs.com/news/777366/tesla-cybertruck-police-cars-las-vegas/

[deleted] 2025-11-02 06:34

Lucky no one's going there. So when they break down and fslll apart no one will know

TheBrianWeissman 2025-11-02 06:45

They're going to be really fun on those 115 degree days. They're painted black, and black stainless steel is going to heat up to probably 140-150 degrees. People will burn themselves on the door handles. To say nothing for the fact they're going to get about 50 miles between charges, since they're going to need to blast air conditioning nonstop. What a waste of money and time these cringe trucks are.

Useful_Response9345 2025-11-02 06:54

Police are just thugs for the rich anyway. All fits together.

k-mcm 2025-11-02 06:57

Do they really need 10 of them to be the nation's largest fleet?

OutlandishnessOk3310 2025-11-02 07:33

'Donation' means charitable tax write off without incurring scrap costs. Actually pretty smart.

bindermichi 2025-11-02 07:39

People can now easily outrun the police by using slightly dirty roads where the CT can't follow without the suspension failing

mologav 2025-11-02 07:41

Blurring the lines 😂😂😂 The US has nothing beyond private interests

Mangorzata 2025-11-02 07:52

This donation is one of the way to make some free space on Tesla Factory car park

fastwriter- 2025-11-02 08:23

Las Vegas - the City of stupid Tesla experiments. Maybe the Cybertrucks only patrol in the Tunnel at the Trad Fair.

[deleted] 2025-11-02 08:38

Donation= to get them off the books  And possibly tax write-off

RocketLabBeatsSpaceX 2025-11-02 08:50

At least we know we’ll be able to escape.

Youngnathan2011 2025-11-02 08:51

No one looks cool in one…. Not practical either

Apprehensive-Box-8 2025-11-02 09:08

Those things don’t even have doorhandles. You touch a capacitive button and it opens slightly, then you have to grab it by the bare metal and pull the door open. Since they have „only“ one 10, I doubt they will have a lot of impact on the fleet. Probably be a rolling barricade. Also the article says they got additional battery (whatever that means), so they’ll be even heavier, putting even more strain on the suspension parts. I‘ll give it two years max until they’re all totaled or otherwise out of service.

zedk47 2025-11-02 09:44

Would have been smarter to sell them and buy something else... wait, sell them? Nevermind...

Hi_Doctor_Nick_ 2025-11-02 09:51

Going to a car wash to lose your stars

ComicsEtAl 2025-11-02 10:05

This is gonna be funny.

Bi0H4z4rD667 2025-11-02 10:10

So they want to get rid of some enployees in that police station but they cant fire them? And their solution is to give them death traps?

Herban_Myth 2025-11-02 10:20

No contract/s?

Buddycat350 2025-11-02 10:38

> I‘ll give it two years max until they’re all totaled or otherwise out of service. That's quite optimistic of you considering the QC for CTs and the "stellar" customer service from Tesla.

Basement_Chicken 2025-11-02 10:48

That way, Elon can at least write them off, instead of them just sitting on the books while rusting out in the open.

CarsCarpal 2025-11-02 11:16

Tax write off and then the cops will have to pay for them to be scrapped. Clever.

Business-Shoulder-42 2025-11-02 11:35

They 100% will park these and use them as loan collateral once the officers find them lame and the maintenance department stops working on them. This is just a bank line transfer essentially. The citizens and tourists of Las Vegas are going to hold the bag for Elon yet again.

deadlyspoons 2025-11-02 11:44

Ain’t no one pulling a PIT maneuver in these things, that’s for sure. The maintenance costs will crater their budget. Each tire costs $500. The windshield wiper — “GigaSweep”, there’s only one — goes for $75, $165 for the full assembly. Broken windshield? $2500 to replace. Damage to a body panel is structural damage, not cosmetic. $$$$$.

Soffritto_Cake_24 2025-11-02 11:45

cops wear gloves?

FrogmanKouki 2025-11-02 12:31

The police just mean intimidate when they say "look cool".

Matt_Murphy_ 2025-11-02 12:37

"blurring lines"? please. they're gone.

Battle_of_BoogerHill 2025-11-02 12:37

No. They dont

Socratesticles_ 2025-11-02 12:56

Ouch! What about when they lay someone on the hood to search them!?

adognamedpenguin 2025-11-02 12:58

Raising concerns? NOW. NOW, we’re supposed to be concerned?

WhereIShelter 2025-11-02 13:00

The good news is tourism imploded for the US, there is nobody in Vegas to spy on.

P0Rt1ng4Duty 2025-11-02 13:20

The police have never prioritized protecting the public.

CommunicationNext876 2025-11-02 13:22

So if you’re being chased by LVMPD all you need to do to get away is drive off the paved road, because they won’t be able to follow for a risk of breaking something? Solid plan!!!

Skycbs 2025-11-02 13:24

Two would probably do it

gmwdim 2025-11-02 13:30

Cops are gonna look more like the fascist dorks that most of them are.

beren12 2025-11-02 13:30

Only when planting evidence. Sometimes.

gmwdim 2025-11-02 13:30

GTA in real life!

SpectrumWoes 2025-11-02 13:37

Maintenance department working on them, that’s a good one 🤣

judgeysquirrel 2025-11-02 14:09

Inflating cyber truck sales numbers via tax dollars. Wouldn't be surprised to learn the US government is investing heavily in Trump coin.

Lacrewpandora 2025-11-02 14:26

Effective crime prevention. Imagine how humiliating it would be to go to jail in the back of a ClusterTruck.

Superbead 2025-11-02 14:29

> Damage to a body panel is structural damage, not cosmetic None of the visible body panels are structural, with the possible exception of the door sill/rocker. Though I'm sure the work will be priced as if it were structural

RedditFauxGold 2025-11-02 14:30

So getting hosed on the tunnel wasn’t enough Musk?

slick2hold 2025-11-02 14:31

Lobby to cut all taxes to a point where public services don't have enough money to do their.jobs and then come in riding in on white horse to show how much of a humanitarian or good person you are. Seems like a playbook all these rich people are using, including our president who makes up wars and conflict is to later "solve." We as American citizens need to start taxong these people love we e did prior to Reagan and his BS trickle down theory. Edit: Yes, a bit off topic, but it had to be said

[Harry](https://harryscollision.com/tesla-releases-cybertruck-repair-procedures/) disagrees. “For example, damage to a body panel often indicates structural damage, as the exoskeleton does not separate the frame from the outer shell. Unlike conventional cars, where parts can be replaced individually, Cybertruck repairs may require extensive work on the surrounding structure. The unique stainless steel material also resists conventional repair methods like dent pulling or panel replacement, necessitating specialized equipment and expertise.”

jhaluska 2025-11-02 14:37

Well two running ones.

jhaluska 2025-11-02 14:38

Vehicles like this end up being used to go to school events or something PR related.

Adorable_Branch6502 2025-11-02 14:46

Frightening. Hopefully there is no data being transferred to Tesla about what locations the cars stop at and who rides in the cars.

jayleia 2025-11-02 14:47

Cop: Those criminals deserve it! Normal Person: Uh...you haven't even ACCUSED them of anything yet? Cop: Well, they didn't want second-degree burns, so now they resisted arrest! (most cops are not like this, but ALL cops work in a system where people like that are accepted)

Superbead 2025-11-02 14:50

Harry's are wrong, and appear to have bought into the 'exoskeleton' marketing nonsense. The Tesla collision repair manual they link themselves has multiple diagrams showing the actual 'endoskeleton' of the truck, for example: https://service.tesla.com/docs/Cybertruck/BodyRepair/BodyRepairProcedures/en-us/GUID-5FC821DF-0811-41E5-9277-8A11060C3D02.html It is similar to a regular unibody with large aluminium castings at the front and rear, and the battery making up the floor. From that manual, *Structural Repair Guidelines*: https://service.tesla.com/docs/Cybertruck/BodyRepair/BodyRepairProcedures/en-us/GUID-C73E4B36-F7F0-4CA0-87F4-705A45D7D788.html > Pulling or pushing of exterior body panels is allowed. Tesla does not allow pulling or pushing of body structure components using frame straightening equipment. Tesla defines a structural component as any bonded, welded, weld-bonded, rivet-bonded, or riveted part of the vehicle. But the exterior panels are merely bolted on; see the rear sail panel being removed about halfway down this page in the main service manual, for example: https://service.tesla.com/docs/Cybertruck/ServiceManual/en-us/GUID-CA8BCDA2-6112-4633-B76B-58251188E025.html

BringBackUsenet 2025-11-02 15:00

They'll trash them as soon as one of them makes some fried bacon.

BringBackUsenet 2025-11-02 15:01

They really only need one for the annual BBQ.

vxicepickxv 2025-11-02 15:03

So that's why they're getting 10.

BringBackUsenet 2025-11-02 15:04

They'll look as foolish as every other pretentious douchebag who drives one.

BringBackUsenet 2025-11-02 15:05

Something that large can't be very maneuverable, and the visibility has to be poor.

BringBackUsenet 2025-11-02 15:06

Yep. They can't sell them so give some away in the name of PR.

vxicepickxv 2025-11-02 15:07

The same thing Musk always does.

vxicepickxv 2025-11-02 15:07

So, by Thanksgiving?

BringBackUsenet 2025-11-02 15:09

So more Musk Math to put on the tax returns.

Rabble_Runt 2025-11-02 15:11

A failed EV model patrols a dying city. All thanks to “The War on Woke.” Could not be more fitting.

PiratesPioneer 2025-11-02 15:24

Ridiculous. There was no comment like this when it was a GM or FORD model vehicle

Ascending_Valley 2025-11-02 15:26

This will definitely boost tourism. Maybe mount conspicuous remote controlled arms in the back too.

Desperate_Elk_7369 2025-11-02 15:44

Wait, Elon is giving away all the unsold Cybertrucks?

bitchcoin5000 2025-11-02 15:55

Here's how the donation worked: actual values of those trash trucks that nobody wants - 60K write off value - 160K; potentially more depending on verbiage

TheRealCabbageJack 2025-11-02 16:26

It’s like the movie RoboCop, only shitty

EverythingMustGo95 2025-11-02 16:28

Because nothing says “Gestapo” like a police car. Except a Cybertruck. ..: /sarcasm But is this really the way the police want to present themselves to the public?

Euler007 2025-11-02 16:31

They turn them over easy halfway through.

Specman9 2025-11-02 16:39

Criminals will disable them with a water pistol.

GinnedUp 2025-11-02 17:05

Can't sell'em so take the donation write off for the dumpster on wheels.

The latter

OrneryTortoise 2025-11-02 18:17

Are these 'lines between public and private interests' in the room with us now?

ObservationalHumor 2025-11-02 18:53

Keep in mind this is the same guy who was glazing Musk and the design of the CT after that green beret lit one on fire in front of Trump's hotel in Vegas too. Article: https://www.cnn.com/2025/01/02/us/tesla-cybertruck-trump-hotel-wwk-hnk Musk has been on good terms with Las Vegas politicians for a while just to keep his idiotic LVCC tunnel project operating for The Boring Company. It's not remotely surprising that he chose this department and city for his 'donation'.

fisto_supreme 2025-11-02 19:19

Should the title say 'nation's _only_ fleet'?

brintoul 2025-11-02 19:25

Hint: they’ll barely use them.

Muad_Dib_of_Arrakis 2025-11-02 19:38

What an ironic possibility. "Hey Sarge, where's the propagandamobile? 2nd tow this week? What about the other one? Still in the shop, cool."

BrownshoeElden 2025-11-02 20:00

“Smart” if you mean, how to adjust to a product failure. The value of the write-off should be limited to the value of the car *not* when new but in the secondary used market… he is donating them at an inflated price where the market clearly doesn’t agree with the value.

Herban_Myth 2025-11-02 20:02

Are tax payers footing the bill for “contractual” funding?

ADDSquirell69 2025-11-02 20:16

_Captain_Amazing_ 2025-11-02 20:25

This donor is Marc Andreesen - a right wing billionaire recent transplant from the Bay Area. He ran Andreesen Horowitz venture capital firm and is close buds with fascists Peter Thiel and Elon Musk. Yay for then Republican fascist takeover of our country.

Skycbs 2025-11-02 23:10

No. This donation was valued at $2.7M, which is still $270,000 per. The $8-9 was a donation of drones.

mtaw 2025-11-03 06:12

Merely donating something doesn't mean it's a charitable donation or eligible for a tax rebate. Police departments aren't charities. That said, I don't know anything about Nevada laws but at the very least it's not a given that you'd be granted any kind of tax break for this. Could just as well be a bribe, maybe hoping for funding for useless tunnels.

nick4fake 2025-11-03 09:08

Yeah, US has privately-owned police and gestapo, people need to get their heads off thei asses

Big--Bazza 2025-11-03 11:25

Emotional_Goal9525 2025-11-03 12:22

And i am sure Morgan Stanley is happy to provide a cash loan using the the tax write off as a collateral.

Master_Grape5931 2025-11-03 13:22

They are the ones that make the laws, funny how that often works out in their favor.

Quirky_Tradition_806 2025-11-03 17:13

This is an intricate financial web, a layered web of schemes to pump up the units moved/sold/financially delivered. By funneling his personal funds to public agencies specifically for the acquisition of Tesla vehicles, this creates, on paper, an impression that these departments are independently purchasing Tesla cars. This tactic effectively boosts sales figures for the company, painting a picture of increased demand and market success. On the other hand, if Tesla were to donate the card directly to these departments, the units would show up as a loss on the ledger. This strategy is far more astute than the direct donation of vehicles, which would be publicly marked as a loss for Tesla's balance sheet. Instead, by offering financial support with the stipulation that the funds be used to buy Tesla cars, the transactions are seamlessly recorded as legitimate sales, thereby improving profit margins and enhancing overall unit sales statistics. I don’t know how this is not a clever deception, bordering on financial fraud.

Disastrous_Minute_56 2025-11-06 20:47

Hopefully they don't get rid of their existing cruisers. As those Cybertrucks break down or the bodies become damaged in pursuit, it will not be financially feasible to repair them, they'll just have to get rid of them.
