The first picture I saw last week of someone sitiing in the back seat it was obvious that headroom was going to be an issue. These more recent pictures show the lack of thigh and shoulder support and the really low seating position. All dimensions (L/H/W/WB) are smaller than their competitors so I have no idea what made them think this would work. Rushed job?

terraphantm 2025-08-23 14:03

Rushed job is basically teslas entire business plan

[deleted] 2025-08-23 14:04

Most Chinese households are multigenerational with one car. It’s going to be the kids in the back row.

Spottswoodeforgod 2025-08-23 14:09

“Abysmal” huh - so much like the first two rows then?

North-Outside-5815 2025-08-23 14:29

Sounds like an utter lemon.

EconomyDoctor3287 2025-08-23 14:32

"Chinese people are smol, so it should be plenty space for them" - Elmo

Key-Beginning-2201 2025-08-23 14:39

For whatever reason, Tesla is allergic to big investments like here, ensuring there's enough room in a new model. That's a major red flag. And No, robotaxi isn't a major investment. They're doing the bare minimum to get people to talk about them. Dojo was supposed to be THE answer for data training. It didn't exist except maybe as a chance to launder chips to x.ai.

Redacted_Bull 2025-08-23 14:41

Sounds exactly like Tesla. Make announcement as distraction, then deliver shitty product or nothing at all until moving on to the next distraction.

Inosh 2025-08-23 14:56

You can get the 3rd row in the US, it can basically be used by little kids and that’s about it. Biggest issue is actually the legs, your knees will be at your chest.

[deleted] 2025-08-23 14:59

Why don’t they just build a normal SUV are they stupid??? /s

Dude008 2025-08-23 15:02

You accidentally put /s at the end

CouncilmanRickPrime 2025-08-23 15:04

Well duh. It wasn't made for a third row. Teslas solution for third rows is to just make people sit in the trunk.

luroot 2025-08-23 15:09

The hatchback glass right over the 3rd row's headspace looks like a serious safety issue. In the event of a big bump or crash, someone's head could smash against and shatter that glass.

Fockelot 2025-08-23 15:24

It’s more and more looking like someone at Tesla just shakes a magic 8 ball to make design decisions.

Opcn 2025-08-23 15:25

Another real reason for it not to come to the us. The average american is 3" taller than the average chinese person. If the 5'7" reporter was feeling cramped that doesn't bode well for the rest of us.

lothar74 2025-08-23 15:30

What a joke of a design: > Due to the Model Y L’s continued coupe SUV design, headroom was severely limited, with only just over a fist’s distance between the head and the rear window for a 170cm [5’ 7”] person. This raised concerns about head contact during bumpy rides.

Engunnear 2025-08-23 15:33

Yes, but for a different set of reasons.

Engunnear 2025-08-23 15:36

You misspelled “pulls a massive bong rip”.

BuckChintheRealtor 2025-08-23 15:42

In their defense they're certainly taking a LOT of time to "solve" autonomy

liquidgrill 2025-08-23 15:52

They don’t care. This news will send the stock up 10%

beyerch 2025-08-23 15:56

No. They look for what requires the LEAST effort from mfg. changes to call it 'new'. On that note, some should really measure it to see if the interior/body is longer.

BrtFrkwr 2025-08-23 15:56

What! You mean they're not buying elon's hype? I mean, Americans can be talked into buy inferior products at inflated prices. What's wrong with the Chinese?

Sregtur 2025-08-23 15:57

I don’t get the point of this. All that just for one extra seat since the second row has been reduced from 3 to 2 seats

[deleted] 2025-08-23 15:57

Yeah I wasn’t sure how to communicate the fact that I know that they are indeed stupid

General-Bend1129 2025-08-23 16:26

WHO wants to buy that shitbox

WatchingyouNyouNyou 2025-08-23 16:30

Don't buy this trash from this trash company

MilkshakeSocialist 2025-08-23 16:49

That hasn't stopped them from advertising and selling it though.

Applesauce808 2025-08-23 17:05

Elmo will sell Tesla helmet for $500 😂

Ok-Bit2926 2025-08-23 17:11

Why would you sell a six-seater vehicle in a country where the average household has 2.8 people?

neonmantis 2025-08-23 17:12

Kids in the crumple zone

neonmantis 2025-08-23 17:16

Modelled after his ballistic helmet son.

[deleted] 2025-08-23 17:17

Kids in China don’t even wear seatbelts let alone sit in a child seat. Sitting in the crumple zone is the least of their worries.

mishap1 2025-08-23 17:24

Elon had them benchmark the Porsche 911 again.

b-side61 2025-08-23 17:30

A three-fer!

li_shi 2025-08-23 17:51

I think the point is that is going against proper designed 6 or 7 seater. Will cause a bump in sales but not as high as people think because other 6 seaters are more comfy.

Budget-Ad-6900 2025-08-23 18:03

1 child policy lol

Budget-Ad-6900 2025-08-23 18:08

last Tesla stupid decision: \-make a rushed cybertrash and lose billions in r&d and infrastructure. \-dont invest in a really new model s or x \-make a rushed model y that it is no long enough

BiscottiKnown9448 2025-08-23 18:38

I know Teslas are the ultimate Uber car but I can't sit in the rear of Tesla M3 or MY for this reason at 6'4".

lothar74 2025-08-23 18:42

I’m 6’6” so of course I checked out the headroom.

PerfectBad2505 2025-08-23 18:57

Well, from a target audience perspective it might be less absurd? As much as I hate Tesla, this car is aimed at families. If you have a family of 4, you don’t need the LY If you are 5, you could consider it for more comfort. If you are 6 it does make sense. The main reason the headroom in the back row would not be an issue is that you probably put the smallest kids there.

cahrg 2025-08-23 19:08

Smallest kids have a tendency to grow. Buying a model y with a family of 6 is plain stupid

rogerarcher 2025-08-23 19:16

But but but … I heard this was revolution and will make Tesla a 10 trillion dollar company /s

Jacktheforkie 2025-08-23 19:25

Not even enough headroom for people from a country with a fairly short average height

Hipsthrough100 2025-08-23 19:53

There’s just too many other choices

AustrianMichael 2025-08-23 19:57

And all the bots now can say that Tesla makes a 3-row SUV as well…

AustrianMichael 2025-08-23 20:01

Also, the average American is like 50 lbs bulkier (199 vs 143)

AustrianMichael 2025-08-23 20:01

This is a different, slightly bigger Model Y

Schmich 2025-08-23 20:18

It was the same for us in the old XC90 (no idea about newer versions). When we had adults it was a clown car. Still happy we had it as we could 7 people legally in the car. We didn't have access to a minivan...

Odd-Adagio7080 2025-08-23 20:36

Tesla in general, (or Elmo in particular) really seems to have a lack of interest, or even downright disdain, for consumers.

bindermichi 2025-08-23 20:45

And still you can get a cheaper or similar priced car with six seats and more room. So why buy a Model Y?

bindermichi 2025-08-23 20:49

Yeah. Just had the "pleasure" of driving a regular Model Y for a trip today. This car is utter trash to drive. The suspension is so stiff you constantly pray for smooth roads, the wind noise is horrible, the seats are almost torturous, the seatbelt height is always wrong and my hands went numb from the steering vibrations.

pacific_beach 2025-08-23 21:05

> someone's head ~~could~~ will smash

[deleted] 2025-08-23 21:13

People have different preferences.

PerfectBad2505 2025-08-23 21:25

Lets say your oldest ‘kid’ is 18. That would make the youngest two around 13 - 15 in a worst case scenario? That should normally not be an issue size wise for the back row seats? Again, I hate this car, but this could perfectly work if you plan the timing of your family car well.

PerfectBad2505 2025-08-23 21:25

Fair point

relaxyourshoulders 2025-08-23 21:29

TSLA really shows how fickle, imaginary and fraudulent market valuations can be. And considering the bulk of index funds are in tech, which shares a lot of the distortions, it’s time to put your cash into land, fuel, ammunition and canned goods.

eattohottodoggu 2025-08-23 21:31

Model YL. The L stands for Ligma Balls, Elon.

[deleted] 2025-08-23 21:36

Sure, they grow. But if the youngest ones are 3-4 years now, what are the odds you have the same car when they are 14-15?

AgentSmith187 2025-08-23 21:59

You misspelled "smokes meth/crack"

saxongroove 2025-08-23 22:27

Yeah but Chinese people are really tall so it’s not a fair test

Ada_Kaleh22 2025-08-23 22:32

See China's been on a 'we do it better' thing, pushed by the media of course. There might be a time where the media will shine favorably on Tesla, that will be one limited time.

cahrg 2025-08-23 22:48

Oooor, here is an idea, buy a properly sized car and no need to worry about the timing

cahrg 2025-08-23 22:50

10 years? Pretty high. What kind of moronic argument is it?

[deleted] 2025-08-23 22:57

The average american family changes cars every 4-6 years.

neonmantis 2025-08-23 22:59

ah yeah because making already dangerous situations more dangerous should be of no concern to anyone.

joefresco2 2025-08-23 23:45

I like the idea of the Y L because the slope in the trunk roof makes it really hard to fit much back there. Having an extra 7" in the trunk sounds nice. I'd probably never use the back seats except in some critical scenario. It would be even nicer to make them removable. And the middle seat in a Y is TIGHT. It's not normal width.

[deleted] 2025-08-23 23:56

Could 'ave built a 4 row model Y, are they stupid?!

No_Pen8240 2025-08-24 00:19

Abysmal is a step up from the 7 seat Model Y. (I am dead serious, abysmal is really a step up. . . 7 seat Model Y was flat rash, when kindergartners complained about not enough room, I knew I got screwed)

kombiwombi 2025-08-24 00:19

You are thinking of US nuclear families, not households as they exist elsewhere in the world. I've got what would be three US households -- four generations -- under my roof. I own a micro car and a people mover van.

GiftIcy3233 2025-08-24 00:21

Is everyone aware that third row seats are not a new development for the model? I have a 2021 model Y with the third row. It’s perfect when I’m going out for dinner with another family and we just wanna take one car- kids (and dogs) go in the very back. Can adults sit back there comfortably? Hell no. So if you own one of these things plan accordingly. [btw…, I’m always surprised when I see so much shade being thrown on Teslas. I have to assume it’s by people who have never driven one…. I’ve owned everything from an Audi R8 spyder to giant lifted Dodge Ram, and everything in between- im a “car guy” and not some tree hugging, left-wing environmentalist and this is easily the best car I’ve ever owned. The torque is ridiculous and makes this thing a blast to drive every day. Its a BEAST for towing my boat. It’s the best car ever for long road trips. I haven’t had any mechanical issues and I’m at 55,000 miles. I’m even picking up my tires for about 100 bucks each. I can’t tell you how much money I’ve saved on gas, time and maintenance. (and when I hear about Tesla in the news and when I read everyone’s comments it’s basically opposite of everything i just listed right ? I just don’t get it )All right I’ll get off my soapbox now.]

Krieg 2025-08-24 00:33

You mean “the kid” ?

DocCEN007 2025-08-24 00:54

Tesla fails again...TSLA up 20% on the news!

Engunnear 2025-08-24 01:18

I should have just crossed out “shakes” and “magic” and inserted a “does”.

SentinelZero 2025-08-24 01:41

The Model Y is the definition of phoned in, no surprised the YL is any different. When Tesla just fattens up their Model 3 and calls it a day, is anyone really surprised they wont put any time and effort to actually change the design to give a usable third row?

dtyamada 2025-08-24 01:48

That was my first thought for what tesla ... err, fElon ... was thinking.

DN1097 2025-08-24 01:49

I’m still getting nightmares of that traffic cctv footage from China on YouTube where the Minivan turns and all the kids in the back fall out of the unlatched rear hatch into the street

cahrg 2025-08-24 06:47

Where in America is located China?

Withnail2019 2025-08-24 07:39

Wow look at that. Don't they know Chinese people are pretty tall nowadays?

Withnail2019 2025-08-24 07:40

Anything to get a 'new model' out.

Withnail2019 2025-08-24 07:41

Are you some sort of anti China racist?

Withnail2019 2025-08-24 07:42

Right. No money to remodel it properly.

PerfectBad2505 2025-08-24 09:52

Are there any electric alternatives on de US market available? Somewhat in the same price range? (Honest question)

cahrg 2025-08-24 10:23

Is that model available on de US market? (dishonest question, I know it is only in China)

Alternative_Advance 2025-08-24 10:31

Big investments that make them look like just an other car company... Arguably Cybertruck, 4680, Dojo, Giga Texas, Semi are all big investments without anywhere near the promised return.

pickledonionfish 2025-08-24 11:07

It’s become the car world’s “Mangled Chanel Dress”.👗

Drug_fueled_sarcasm 2025-08-24 11:20

So the tesla names now spell out S3XY YL. I wonder what the Y L could stand for to a weird billionaire perv.

bikesnotbombs 2025-08-24 13:57

I think that's a fair assessment.  I don't have one but have a few friends that do that also seem to like the cars.  Not my style, but I think a lot of the Tesla hate has more to do with the stock valuation and the constant grifting/lying from Elmo.  Or possibly the belief that fsd is better than a level 2 system and/or 'light years' ahead of competition .  Your comment doesn't deserve the downvote

grogi81 2025-08-24 19:21

Fist distance for 170cm human is definitely not that bad. Occasionally ferrying extras there seems perfectly doable.

grogi81 2025-08-24 19:21

I'm 195cm and have no issue...

BiscottiKnown9448 2025-08-24 20:04

how are you not hitting your head on the back glass when you sit in rear?

ilovebeagles123 2025-08-24 21:00

That 3rd row is sized for grocery bags.

practicaloppossum 2025-08-24 21:47

When I was a kid, that was true - indeed, a lot of people got a new car every other year. But that was half a century ago. According to [ISeeCars.com](http://ISeeCars.com), the average in the US now is 8.4 years.

[deleted] 2025-08-24 21:55

Isnt that the average amount of years a car lasts? That doesnt mean the same owner kept the car from it was new until its scrapped.

practicaloppossum 2025-08-24 21:55

That, however, points up the core of Tesla's problem. The YL is available in China (at about $46000), and the BYD Tang is available in China (at about $40000). Unfortunately for Tesla, the Tang is superior to the YL in almost every respect. (aside from the BYD Tang, I think there are 3 other competing 3-row SUVs in the China market).

practicaloppossum 2025-08-24 22:01

No, that's 12.something years. ISeeCars was looking at first-owner duration.

KamKorn 2025-08-25 14:53

What do they have against making a bigger car?

UndertakerFred 2025-08-25 21:43

And the helmet will somehow cause more serious injury than not wearing it.

Muted_Telephone_8134 2025-08-26 01:14

I’ll stick with normal Model Y🔥

ARAR1 2025-08-26 12:15

Doesn't take too many brain cells - if you want a comfortable 6 seater you need a vehicle the size of an Expedition or Escilade. The Y is not that big. Of course tesla will be scamming.

LightBlazar 2025-08-26 15:32

I can see why this was not planned to be released in America.  If Chinese people who are on average smaller than Americans say it is cramped, Americans will definitely not fit.

ehisforadam 2025-08-26 22:00

Get one of these to the States so we can see u/doug-demuro try and get back there.

Ok-Bit2926 2025-09-01 09:51

No, I am referring to household size. According to Statista, the statistic for the avg Chinese household is 2.8.
