Did he just activate voice commands from the back seat? Yes

All seats in the YL have localized microphones so it can determine which seat is speaking.

Alive_Wedding 2025-08-22 17:04

Looks like they are trying to have feature parity with all the Chinese car brands. The Model Y L is really competitive in terms of bang for buck even in a hyper competitive market like China Edit: meanwhile, the Voice Control we have now in the US can’t even determine if the song I wanna play is a song or a podcast, let alone playing the correct song. They need to step it up

Grandpas_Spells 2025-08-22 17:07

This is why Elon's trying to suggest this won't be out this year. All Y buyers and many X buyers will only want this car. If it was coming out in Q4 (it is coming out in Q4), those buyers would wait.

c200sc 2025-08-22 17:16

Dann thats a good car. Its almost insane to offer that only in China (for now, maybe forever).

Dr_Pippin 2025-08-22 17:17

Dang, this looks like it would really fit the bill for what I'm looking for in our next vehicle.

DanielColchete 2025-08-22 17:24

He tried the seats in the most unrealistic way possible.

feurie 2025-08-22 17:25

It honestly would do great in the US compared to things like a Grand Highlander.

feurie 2025-08-22 17:29

Selling for the low 50’s in the US it would be an extremely compelling vehicle for the price compared to things like the refreshed Palisade, Grand Highlander, etc. The features and cost to own would be a great value even without incentives. Unless there’s just huge tariff implications vs economies of scale concerns, I can’t see why there’s any uncertainty bringing it here.

feurie 2025-08-22 17:31

I’m hoping it’s a weird Elon vague answer. Like US production won’t start until next year but they’ll import from Germany or something.

Meats10 2025-08-22 17:35

That makes no sense in the tariff world we now live in when could be made here easily.

AltDelete 2025-08-22 17:37

I wanna see how kids seats/boosters fit in the back, and how hard it is to assist with buckling. The 3 row model Y is an absolute nightmare with space. We just had our 3rd kid, and while we can make it work, I’m seriously considering selling it and getting a rivian or something

feurie 2025-08-22 17:38

Neither does waiting a year for US production.

Paythapiper 2025-08-22 17:40

The L is still going to have piss poor storage behind those 3rd row seats

Joostey 2025-08-22 17:58

The more people who ask for this in US, it will come.

BikebutnotBeast 2025-08-22 18:11

Feature parity would have meant heating, cooling, and massage.

BikebutnotBeast 2025-08-22 18:13

Hello Elon, yes I would like to buy this in the USA tomorrow.

okichi 2025-08-22 18:13

So now we can finally and conclusively pin down who farted.

Alive_Wedding 2025-08-22 18:14

Model Y L does have heating and cooling in the first and second rows. Massage is pretty useless in a car IMO but to each their own

Grandpas_Spells 2025-08-22 18:25

It makes sense to say they're waiting for a year so they don't hurt Q3 sales. Then in Q4, they say, "wow demand is so high we are going to sell here now."

Dos-Commas 2025-08-22 18:28

Because the Chinese EV market is insanely competitive. In the meanwhile US EV market is stagnated due to the removal of the EV credits.

dailytrippple 2025-08-22 18:44

The only proper use for such microphones.

rainer_d 2025-08-22 19:02

It’s not that. You can’t even register an ICE car in most of the larger cities anymore. You basically apply for a ticket in a lottery. Does that look like it’s going to be a thing in the US? Or Europe?

specter491 2025-08-22 19:15

Wow

StartledPelican 2025-08-22 19:56

If Tesla decides to sell this in the US/Europe, then they will build it in Austin/Berlin. There's zero chance of imports to the US. I doubt it for Europe, but maybe.

StartledPelican 2025-08-22 19:57

They fold down when not in use. There's also the trunk/frunk.  But, yeah, using the third row means less trunk storage.

lulbob 2025-08-22 20:26

I want to see an adult back there when the middle row is up

gwwwhhhaaattt 2025-08-22 20:58

This would be an impulse buy for me. I have a Model Y with 7 seats. However, I would like to see a van. Pretty much this with a tiny bit more room in the third row and bigger for luggage. Anyone who has a minivan realizes that it's much more convenient to have one. Unfortunately our road trips are with the van. I even have a tow hitch on the Tesla Y it just doesn't fit our family.

TigglyWiggly95 2025-08-22 21:07

Same

WhereCanIFind 2025-08-22 21:08

There's 400L more might've lost out some vertical storage though. It's longer and taller than the regular Y.

ApeX_PN01 2025-08-22 21:10

They’re not really trying for feature parity considering the lack of zero gravity seats, fridge and massaging seats, just to name a few features that are basically standard on a lot of comparable Chinese SUV’s.

snark42 2025-08-22 21:48

With an adult comfortably sitting in the middle row. My Highlander third row was even pretty useless once the kids were teenagers, pretty sure that's why they have a Grand version now.

lulbob 2025-08-22 21:52

yeah the GH adds a few more inches of legroom into the 3rd row. If 3rd row will actually be used, Highlander doesn't cut it. I'm thinking the YL is more Highlander than GH in terms of 3rd row seating comfort

tvbi 2025-08-22 22:05

Wishing for a performance 6-seater.

jacob6875 2025-08-22 22:33

It will come as fast as they can modify production lines here. I would guess they will set them up for the cheaper Y and the YL after September 30th when the tax credit goes away. Currently they want to produce as many Ys as possible to sell before 9/30. Elon/Tesla are going to act like it is years away so people don't wait to buy it and instead buy the current Y. I bet it will be on sale early next year in the USA along with the cheap Y.

Infamous_Tour_2232 2025-08-22 23:09

So… the X really is getting sunset? Because Y would anyone buy that instead of this? They would have to add ALL of these features PLUS, steer by wire, vehicle to vehicle charging, vehicle to home, power frunk, AND bring back stalk.

snark42 2025-08-22 23:31

Any idea if the Model X 6/7 passenger configuration is usable by normal sized adults or teenagers? Any real room for storage behind the third row? I probably don't need it now, but 5 years ago I was seriously thinking about. Garage size was a serious limitation though.

Matt_NZ 2025-08-22 23:33

That is a feature of my partners BYD Shark that I'm a little jelly of...anyone can call out to the voice assistant and it knows which seat asked

sm00thArsenal 2025-08-23 00:11

I mean, not really that competitive when this is cheaper https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOpA1v4eZLU

OriginalGoldstandard 2025-08-23 00:40

Haha very good. Imagine if your seat also glowed when it detected gas? Gold

Paythapiper 2025-08-23 01:15

No I know they fold down. But I’m a fam of 5. Rear seats will alway be up. Especially with captains chairs now

Present-Ad-9598 2025-08-23 06:20

There wouldn’t be tariff issues because the car would be built here

bbqturtle 2025-08-23 11:58

They should use the mics for an intercom system. My friend has a minivan with one and it’s delightful

Academic_Release5134 2025-08-23 12:34

People also need to understand that this also could effectively be an admission that the X was a mistake as well. The falcon doors ended up being way harder and more expensive to implement than he thought.

jvoss9 2025-08-23 15:27

The X isn’t a mistake… it’s just $40,000 over priced.

Academic_Release5134 2025-08-23 16:36

The can’t make it for $40k less. Thats why it’s a mistake.

BikebutnotBeast 2025-08-23 17:07

In nearly all Chinese premium EVs (Huawei/Oppo/BYD), they include massage, I'm just saying keeping up with the feature parity is nearly impossible but this does get a little closer to those cars.

leopor 2025-08-24 02:16

Yes please

dacalo 2025-08-24 14:43

S and X are higher margin cars, they can definitely lower the prices significantly. It doesn’t cost $40k more to build them.

Square-Leopard8172 2025-08-24 16:35

The middle row is just begging for leg rests...

casino_r0yale 2025-08-25 22:59

I would buy this car tomorrow given the opportunity

Gordo774 2025-08-26 16:07

Heck even a normal Highlander. Source: Looking for an EV replacement for my 2009 Highlander and the only “affordable” options are the EV9/Ioniq 9. The YL would be a no brainer, but I either have to go to a competitor or down-step my vehicle class to find a reasonable offering.

Twofu_ 2025-08-27 17:17

The X was elgible for a tax credit at one point lol. They can def lower the price again, but choose not to.

Twofu_ 2025-08-27 17:23

Wait the YL has steer by wire?

Infamous_Tour_2232 2025-08-27 17:26

It doesn’t.

Twofu_ 2025-08-27 17:52

Oh sorry i read your comment wrong lol.

bremidon 2025-09-06 13:13

This would be really nice to have in Germany.
