Tesla has announced new models in China before other markets multiple times now.

StartledPelican 2025-08-12 19:25

ShutUpAndTakeMyMoney.gif If they offer a 6-seater Performance version... hooo boy. My poor wallet.

JustGhostin 2025-08-12 19:26

What’s a captains chair?

eatmyopinions 2025-08-12 19:30

In the row behind the driver you either have a bench, or you have two individual chairs with a space between them. The latter option is called Captain's Chairs, or rarely Executive Chairs when they're closer together and more luxurious.

superstring10d 2025-08-12 19:37

This won't be for sale until federal tax credit expires. After which 6 seater becomes regular price and 5 seater is about 4k cheaper.

thiagogaith 2025-08-12 19:56

Post is talking about China and Europe... Go sit in the corner a little bit please

FuzzyFr0g 2025-08-12 20:02

So the Model Y performance is coming, the Model Y basic and the Model Y L.

Igotnonamebruh42 2025-08-12 20:06

That’s why competition is important for consumers

How melodramatic. The US is the only country that gets all Tesla models, and Robotaxi, and Tesla Insurance. And of course one of the very few that actually gets FSD. So you’re doing good, it’s fine if Tesla gets the kinks out on the Chinese market for a few months before it starts selling it in the US.

Someone’s cranky, go eat a Snickers

lukami28 2025-08-12 20:53

Wouldn't it be considered too big to sell large amounts in Europe? Maybe they're just doing standard track testing?

Far_Addition1210 2025-08-12 20:54

Nobody in Europe is buying Teslas, so its just for the Chinese then, Tesla only sold 600 odd cars in Germany last month.

feurie 2025-08-12 20:58

We know. The news is that it's apparently underway with regard to testing.

feurie 2025-08-12 20:58

Makes sense honestly.

feurie 2025-08-12 20:59

It's similar to what the Model Y previously had as well as compact-midsize SUVs with a small third row.

shiroandae 2025-08-12 21:19

Europeans don’t want a captains seat at the back.

Ithrazel 2025-08-12 21:26

Its not fonna be bigger than ix, x5, gle, q7, q8 or small three rows even like 5008, espace etc which are all big sellers in EU

tech01x 2025-08-12 21:31

Tesla literally sold record numbers of vehicles in Spain, Norway, and Türkiye last quarter.

Far_Addition1210 2025-08-12 21:37

What about the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Holland, Austria, Denmark, Ireland?

tech01x 2025-08-12 21:54

You wrote, “Nobody in Europe is buying Teslas…” A counter factual only needs one instance, and I provided more than one.

Ninj4s 2025-08-12 21:54

Huh, that's all we've ever dreamed of since seeing it in Chevy Starcrafts etc. growing up.

AWildDragon 2025-08-12 21:58

Imagine sitting in the back seat while drifting.

VIPTicketToHell 2025-08-12 21:58

I remember when Americans weren’t so whiney

cooldave88 2025-08-12 22:00

I will buy this car when it comes to the USA

schepter 2025-08-12 22:04

You poor Americans. How will you survive.

FreshJs59 2025-08-12 22:28

Have there been any pictures showing the interior of these cars?

paulwesterberg 2025-08-12 22:29

Only if the Model X gets discontinued.

Vo_Mimbre 2025-08-12 22:34

Dumb question: what are captain chairs?

Matt_NZ 2025-08-12 22:34

Blame your current government and Musk who have made EVs less appealing financially, while also reducing competition

OGPresidentDixon 2025-08-12 22:45

I’m guessing bucket seats that may or may not swivel. Edit: oh maybe this: https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModelY/comments/15j0sh1/tesla_model_y_7seater_converted_with_captains/

jedi2155 2025-08-12 22:47

Its also why strong government incentives is important. That competition only existed due to strong government subsidies in China.

paulwesterberg 2025-08-12 23:00

Model X got discontinued in EU.

Vo_Mimbre 2025-08-12 23:09

Oh SECOND row captains seats. I’ve this type in minivans in Hong Kong, they’re super comfy, the type when you hope someone else offers to drive :)

zainfear 2025-08-12 23:50

Yea it's just too expensive for us europoors. And compared to Y, it's even harder to justify the price. But as a current Y AWD LR owner I would seriously consider the L, if the price is right.

paulwesterberg 2025-08-12 23:56

Model S and X sales have also declined in the US as more competition arrives in the luxury sedan and SUV markets. Trump tariffs also push prices up and reduced the number of potential buyers in the US while Canadian buyers are unlikely to support a brand so tied to Trump politics. Tesla really needs to add larger 800V battery packs and steer by wire to keep them competitive.

colterlovette 2025-08-13 00:15

I think it likely will, eventually. Or the X/S will go up in price, become more lux and the Y will fill in the product gap left in the 60-100k range. I 100% see the S/X going EOL though; the 3/Y simply having spec packages and being the only automotive product lines as Tesla focuses on more than the automotive market in the future.

Roboculon 2025-08-13 00:18

It’s a shame that even the extended model Y will likely be too small to replace my current ICE 3 row SUV. And the existing 7 seat option for the model Y was a joke.

Independent-Kick7038 2025-08-13 00:36

Does anyone know if the middle seats collapse like the currently do. Or are they non folding like the current model X bucket seats?

sl33pytesla 2025-08-13 00:52

There ain’t no “smaller model y”. It’s most likely the model y L line getting retrofitted in the Silicon Valley plant.

[deleted] 2025-08-13 01:13

They're gonna use this to bolster sales in the US after the tax credit expires aren't they

TigglyWiggly95 2025-08-13 01:21

Nothing yet

TigglyWiggly95 2025-08-13 01:21

Same

vinegarfingers 2025-08-13 01:44

I have a 5 seater Y and am actively shopping a replacement since having a second baby. I would buy this in a blink if it were available in the states.

shiroandae 2025-08-13 03:03

There’s a reason why your dream never came true.

Igotnonamebruh42 2025-08-13 03:16

Same goes to US, but hey where are those Chinese EV in the US?

JGoldz75 2025-08-13 03:47

I’d guess it would have the same functionality as the Model X seat… sadly

collegedreads 2025-08-13 04:25

Literally the only variant I want. 😭 MYLP ❤️

The_Soldiet 2025-08-13 04:31

You don't talk for all Europeans bud. Captains seats are amazing, and a 6 seater works better than a 7 seater for people with small kids as well.

shiroandae 2025-08-13 04:31

I do because sales numbers. You’ll see. As all other brands who tried have, bud. There’s a reason they’re so usual in China and nonexistent here.

michalf 2025-08-13 07:51

Unfortunately this makes a "Tesla Van" even more unlikely...

Ninj4s 2025-08-13 09:35

...i drive a 6-seater X with captains chairs

shiroandae 2025-08-13 09:36

You mean the same Model X that is so incredibly unpopular it isn’t even offered here anymore after barely selling at all for several years? What a _stunning_ rebuke!

Ninj4s 2025-08-13 09:40

Yep. It was available for enough time for me to make that dream come true.

Suitable_Switch5242 2025-08-13 10:57

There is supposed to be a more affordable Model Y as well. Whether or not it’s smaller remains to be seen. https://insideevs.com/news/766793/tesla-cheaper-new-model-june/

Suitable_Switch5242 2025-08-13 11:01

There haven’t been any photos or interior details yet except that there are 6 seats.

Suitable_Switch5242 2025-08-13 11:05

It means the second row is two separate seats, like this: [image](https://images.hgmsites.net/lrg/2015-chevrolet-traverse_100468267_l.jpg)

Yisheng96 2025-08-13 12:16

My Little Pony

harda_toenail 2025-08-13 13:09

Works well for me. When we bring a grandparent my 3 year old sits in very back, 1 year old behind passenger, then 4 adults. Once 1 year old faces forward they both go in very back

BikebutnotBeast 2025-08-13 14:07

Wish they were stow and go so they could have proper van utility.

Technical_Act3541 2025-08-13 14:59

So basically a model Y minivan. I really wish they would have come out with this and never even toyed with the cybertruck. They should have used the Y platform for a pickup truck too.

[deleted] 2025-08-13 17:13

All the US automakers are scared of China EVs lmao

Boyiee 2025-08-13 21:53

I’m sad because I’m less than 45 days from buying my first tesla (please let there be a lower interest rate in September). We like the 3 better than the Y but I’d probably take this over either.

Independent-Kick7038 2025-08-13 22:25

If they flipped down at least like they currently do. Damn that would be amazing. Instantly much more utility.

Different_Push1727 2025-08-16 11:10

But why? What does it offer that your current one doesn’t? This car fits 2 babies quite comfortably right?

vinegarfingers 2025-08-16 13:54

Currently have two car seats and it’s super tight. Granted they’re rear-facing since the kids are young, but I’m 6’2 and have to drive like a grandma. Ideally would have captains seats in the second row with a reasonably sized third row (or more cargo) similar to the captains option on the X, although that third row is quite small. Pretty specific but if you have two kids it fills up super fast and doesn’t leave room for 5th passenger.

rainer_d 2025-08-17 08:57

It’s not discontinued. Just paused. Though, with the small number of units, you have to wonder how long it’s worth running the homologation on this side of the pond.

Different_Push1727 2025-08-17 09:01

I mean i get that it can be tight, but captain seats in the second room doesn’t all of a sudden give you more room now does jt? Also leaves out the middle seat so no passenger there ever. Maybe if the chairs can go back further a bit I’d get it. That would be handy

nevetsyad 2025-08-27 13:28

Not exactly a fair fight for the US automakers when the Chinese get their massive tax breaks, get to buy parts at deep discounts, and their parts suppliers are giving land, tax breaks, incentives, and raw materials at massive discounts via the government. It's the 2011-2012 Chinese solar panel market flood all over again.
