Adventurous-Roll3049 | 2025-07-16 20:22 | 566 views

Officially filed with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), this longer, roomier version of the Model Y aims to reclaim lost ground in the world’s most competitive EV market. With a six-seat layout, a longer wheelbase, and dual motor with combined output of 340kw

The rear is hideous.

What am I missing? Both the front and rear look exactly the same as the standard refreshed Model Y.

ItsAGoodDay 2025-07-17 00:26

Sign me up. That’s exactly what I’m looking for.

gatormanmm1 2025-07-17 00:26

Idk how they took such an iconic design and made it look ridiculous. Feels like they threw out their design language just for the sake of it. I loved their Porsche-like head lights. Hated the front on the highland and have no words for the Prius...I mean Model Y.

ersatzcrab 2025-07-17 00:30

I don't think they did. It looks exactly the same to me.

GoGoGadget88 2025-07-17 00:55

How much longer?

yhsong1116 2025-07-17 01:15

7” I think

ChunkyThePotato 2025-07-17 01:39

I think both look significantly better than their predecessors. The fish face wasn't ideal (though still very good looking from most angles).

OUEngineer17 2025-07-17 02:14

Personally, I have never considered bigger to be better. But especially a longer wheelbase version of a vehicle. BMW has these long wheelbase Chinese market versions and they're pretty terrible. No extra storage space and terrible handling. It's basically just rear seat legroom so the cars can be used to chauffeur people around.

race4life81 2025-07-17 02:35

Bring this to Australia

whalechasin 2025-07-17 03:13

think they sell well in China surprisingly

whalechasin 2025-07-17 03:14

looks rank in the attached pics but in person i think they’re pretty sick

It's 8.5" in total.

OUEngineer17 2025-07-17 04:36

Of course. That's the whole reason they make them. They do not do well here tho and have lower re-sale than other models (which is why I looked into them in the first place).

Present-Ad-9598 2025-07-17 05:19

Lmao

skyypirate 2025-07-17 05:37

Funny how taste differ so much from one to another. Previously I did not short list the 3 and Y because I couldn't get over the frog/fish face. Now a proud owner of the 3 Performance.

shugadibang 2025-07-17 05:46

If I can get 3 Isofix seats, I’m sold.

[deleted] 2025-07-17 06:10

I just want six seats

cinred 2025-07-17 06:56

So, Aztec

NewMY2020 2025-07-17 07:09

Instead of "L" maybe it could've been named "Model Y FU" For "Family" and "Uber" also it keeps with Tesla's theme of making poor taste jokes/toilet humor.

chicheto93 2025-07-17 07:15

Please be available in the UK in the near future

edum18 2025-07-17 07:20

I dont see any difference

SliChillax 2025-07-17 07:27

Front seats seem different

nametaken_thisonetoo 2025-07-17 08:28

That is one hell of an ugly rear end

NoHonorHokaido 2025-07-17 08:32

Do you have triplets?

[deleted] 2025-07-17 08:45

Brauch ich nicht. Lieber ein kleineres Model Y. Würde ich sofort kaufen.

shugadibang 2025-07-17 08:48

Toddler and twin infants.

[deleted] 2025-07-17 09:23

crazy how the model 3 facelift is gorgeous but they decided to go in another direction with the Y, making it atrocious. I had money set aside for upgrading the Juniper... then it came out.

[deleted] 2025-07-17 09:30

Bruh 😆☠️

biscuitball 2025-07-17 09:41

Sorry where is here? Europe? You can generally get a LWB 7 series, A8 or S class globally but I thought for anything else they were China exclusives?

TurboDraxler 2025-07-17 10:36

In China the L Versions aber available on waaay more models. While we get only the S-Class as LWB, you can even get CLA L in CHina. (There also exits a Audi A8L "Horch" as a Maybach equivalent).

R-EDDIT 2025-07-17 11:56

Congrats. We had three abreast in a Honda Pilot. I would be impressed if the YL supports that, but it's not coming here (US) anyhow (unless Tesla does the sensible thing and starts building them in Texas instead of CT).

LeapYearBoy 2025-07-17 12:05

Hope it all goes to the 3rd row. Those child seats are atrocious.

torb 2025-07-17 12:27

With the horrible turn radius of regular model Y I sure hope they haven't gone for a longer wheel base.

theavatare 2025-07-17 12:33

Big Bottom Girls the car

ZeroWashu 2025-07-17 12:35

I do like those wheel covers. I wonder what size rim is being shown

a9udn9u 2025-07-17 13:03

Not for you?

Michael-Brady-99 2025-07-17 13:25

Yeah I think America is dominated by single occupancy drivers who don’t care about the back seat. Or you have kids and they do t really need more room.

alfuh 2025-07-17 13:41

We need some interior shots!

mohelgamal 2025-07-17 13:53

It is only better if you want a usable 3rd row. That is the whole point of this version. The 3 row regular Y is a joke. I looked into one and couldn’t even fit children in the 3rd row.

vbpatel 2025-07-17 15:09

7” for the kids

carfo 2025-07-17 15:10

Why china first? You can only have one kid and they prefer smaller cars

Tasty-Blackberry5120 2025-07-17 15:18

Model why why why? Weird.

Ask_Individual 2025-07-17 15:49

I wonder how much trunk/cargo area you lose?

canikony 2025-07-17 15:52

I actually like the rear of the Juniper... the front I'm still at odds with. The 3 looks great all around.

colddata 2025-07-17 16:07

> The 3 row regular Y is a joke. I looked into one and couldn’t even fit children in the 3rd row. Even in a Model X, the third row is just 'ok'. It isn't great for full size adults.

glmory 2025-07-17 16:23

The seven seat Y could really use the extra leg room so seems like it would win on the US market as well.

jrherita 2025-07-17 16:35

Is it really that bad? (I'm coming from a Model 3)

Wcg2801 2025-07-17 17:13

Too little too late, BYD owns Tesla’s butt in China now… To think that Musk used to make fun of them

torb 2025-07-17 17:34

Yeah, I believe they have sacrificed some space to leave room for a frunk, but I'm not certain. I used to have a Citroen C4 Picasso that was pretty much the same size, but I never had to do a thre point turn to go head first in my angled driveway before getting a model Y. It might also be because the awd takes up space.

MinuteResident 2025-07-17 18:13

About that much

endofsight 2025-07-17 19:38

Really wonder why Chinese like so big cars? Always thought their cities are quite crowded with limited parking. Similar to Japan.

KymbboSlice 2025-07-17 20:06

I think it’s common in China for the nuclear family to include the grandparents too, so you often have 6 people to fit in the car - not 2-4

KymbboSlice 2025-07-17 20:09

> You can only have one kid That hasn’t been the policy for 10 years. > they prefer smaller cars That’s definitely not true. The Chinese market prefers these longer wheel base 6 seat models, partially because the nuclear family often includes the grandparents as well as kids. I don’t know how much time you’ve spent in China, but they are really big on mini vans there. Much more than the US. I think it’s very obvious why this would start in China, if not remain a China exclusive vehicle. This thing is tailor made for the Chinese market preferences.

Technical_Act3541 2025-07-17 20:16

Having owned a minivan (town and country) and ridden in the far back once or twice..its horrible back there for an adult. I don't get car sick but its still really bad place to ride. Having said that i hope this extended wheelbase is used in a Model Y pickup truck. Get rid of the cyberturd and make the Y pickup.

starkiller_bass 2025-07-17 20:34

I think a significant number of Chinese people who can afford nicer cars can also afford someone else to drive them around, so the owner / adults are spending more time in the rear seats. The exact opposite of the American reason for liking big cars, which is to buy the largest vehicle humanly possible, and drive it around by yourself 99% of the time to be prepared for the 1% of the time you need it (I say this as an american who has a BMW X7 which rarely has more than 2 humans in it)

starkiller_bass 2025-07-17 20:35

Which makes us wonder why coupes and sedans are dying in the US while people drive around alone in their SUVs

samzplourde 2025-07-18 00:50

Six seats? What, like a bench in the front?

Snoo93079 2025-07-18 01:35

To be fair, people who routinely put adults in a third row should look at a van.

Snoo93079 2025-07-18 01:37

BYD is kicking everyone's butt but the Y is still the 3rd best selling EV in China

colddata 2025-07-18 02:41

I think it is unfortunate Tesla didn't try to make an electric minivan with a 150-200 kWh pack (double stacked 75-100 pack), while taking inspiration from the interior flexibility seen in a Sienna and other market leading vans.

TAoie83 2025-07-18 03:04

Most definitely

rkhan7862 2025-07-18 03:58

safety and like large things

KymbboSlice 2025-07-18 07:47

> I believe only a few hours ago that they reversed this policy I’m not sure what you mean by this. Do you mean that China literally reversed the policy only a few hours ago? The one child policy was dropped a decade ago..

LeapYearBoy 2025-07-18 11:38

Nice try, Diddy

foodfoodfloof 2025-07-18 17:48

Looks like the latest gen MYs ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

OUEngineer17 2025-07-18 20:32

If the extra room is only going to the 3rd row or to storage space, then yeah, that would make it into a Minivan and could be quite popular in the US. The extra lengthy Chinese versions I've seen only have more 2nd row legroom tho (see the BMW GT models as an example).

[deleted] 2025-07-18 21:18

We will get in america too! I hope they retain the 7 seater configuration for the non extended one as well as add this extended wheelbase version with 6 seats

Emergency_Nothing212 2025-07-19 11:29

As a Chinese I want to say it’s not true. First I don’t know if we are talking about BMW X7 or model y l as a nicer car, if it’s Model y l it’s just a typical middle class car they still can’t afford a chauffeur. If you are talking about X7, yes owners of that are rich and can afford chauffeur, but it’s very different in China as personal chauffeur/driver never drive cars like X7 or Model Y L, it’s always Benz S class or Buick GL8 or something like that, it’s either luxury sedan or minivan, never a big SUV. chauffeur is usually a governmental thing, individual rarely hire a chauffeur because taxi is very cheap and convenient in China. Big SUVs like X7 or other cheaper kinds are just for people to take their family to a trip on weekends and holidays. People just enjoy driving whole family in a same car, another reason is 99% of elder people don’t know how to drive(we don’t have cars back then) or order a taxi, if you want to take them to somewhere the best way is really just drive them.

jflbball 2025-07-20 01:04

Same. The OG Y is the ugliest car on the road.

jflbball 2025-07-20 01:06

Not sure if you're trying to be racist or FU like f--- u?

NewMY2020 2025-07-20 01:20

Yea like F-- u

TrickLuhDaKidz 2025-07-20 01:47

The rear end on these new Y's - both this one and the new ones already being manufactured - are hideous  Big, boring, rectangle arse

TrickLuhDaKidz 2025-07-20 01:48

Same with the regular new Y rear Horrible downgrade

TrickLuhDaKidz 2025-07-20 01:50

The tail lights are a downgrade in the new 3. The front end is about the same (nose better, lights worse)

TrickLuhDaKidz 2025-07-20 01:50

Just as ugly as the current new Y

hadlockkkkk 2025-07-21 06:10

people with two kids, need a three row to bring their two kids' two friends with them to the park or whatever. Or two kids and grandma and grandpa. Everyone hates squeezing into a third row car but it's either that or drunk grandpa falls asleep at the wheel driving grandma home from Joey's birthday at Red lobster
