Model Y standard: do you miss the FM radio?

CerealPT | 2026-03-15 22:49 | 3 views

Hello all! I'm thinking about getting a model Y standard (cheaper, lfp batteries). I just did a comparison between the standard and the premium and one of the changes is related with the lack of am/FM radio in the standard. So..mif I'm driving on the countryside with a poor 5g coverage I will loose my radio? Is there an option to incorporate a radio in the car? What is your opinion about this?

A Bluetooth FM transmitter is pretty cheap on amazon.

No.

What, there's an FM radio in my MY? Who knew! I live in the land of crappy mobile coverage. I find that my MY with premium connectivity on AT&T works a bit better than my iPhone on Verizon's network. I think a big part of that is the fact that it has an antenna outside the body of the car (in the right mirror, I think.) So you might not be as bad off as you fear. My plan B is a few GB of music on my phone that I can stream over bluetooth to the speakers in the car. Some music streaming services will let you cache copies on your phone and play back tracks in "offline" mode.

Wait WHAT? They're taking away FM/AM radio? What kind of penny pinching BS is that?

Just get a usb and plug it in with your mp3/ flac, it works like a media player. The FLAC audios, the car roars and purrs amazingly compared to YouTube music or even tidal

Tesla doesn't have AM radio btw. There are plenty portable FM radios with Bluetooth you can connect to the Tesla that would work. Bluetooth-enabled radio, speaker, and MP3 player for wireless listening to AM/FM, music, and audiobooks. Check it out on Amazon - you won't regret it! https://a.co/d/0goPgqut

I'd be hard pressed to remember last time I actually listen to FM or AM radio. Now I have to go check if my 24' MYLR has a radio.

I think I used mine once to watch a drive in movie on my 2023.

I suppose it may not work in the absolute most isolated spots but I’ve found the built in TuneIn app great, on the rare occasion I wanted radio.

I’m gonna be one of those… People still listen to the radio?!!

Blue_Kayak 2026-03-16 01:23

I was worried for my wife considering the RWD until we played around with TuneIn in my 23 MYLR and found it’s perfect. I’ll likely quit using FM myself at this point and just use TuneIn.

I haven’t listened to the radio for at least 15 years. So learning that my Model Y has a radio means, who listens to the radio anymore? I mean really, has it improved while I’ve been away? Last time I listened the radio only played the same 5 tunes over and over and over and over and over. Only to be interrupted by endless inane commercials. I got totally fed up and discovered podcasts and audio books. I down load them to my phone so cell coverage makes no difference.

They’re removing the FM radio?  Wow. I remember the update to my 2018 Model 3 that finally enabled the FM radio (that feature wasn’t ready when the first started shipping cars).

TIL the non-standard has a radio and isn't streaming radio from the internet.

The majority of people probably don't use it anymore. That's why it makes sense to cut it and save everyone money (especially for the lowest priced version of the car). Same reason the car doesn't have a CD player.

That FM can come in handy when you want to take a break from the playlist and want to hear some local stuff
