Question about lifting model y

You’re going to reduce your range doing that. Sounds like you want a Rivian R2 or the upcoming Scout SUV

I would encourage you to think carefully about your actual anticipated uses. Im sure you have been…but Most people don’t really need the ground clearance of a truck. If you’re not actually going to be off roading or boondocking then I would propose you go with the model y without a lift (range issues, etc). I think you’re on point regarding technology (at least for now), as Tesla technology is hard to beat. If you truly need the clearance of a truck I would go with the rivian. If you are a fanboy/fangirl and want a pretend truck that has no real purpose and will fool you into thinking you can do truck things to the point you get yourself stuck somewhere…then go with the cybertruck

I’ve driven all of them, extended demos with all… mainly the larger vehicles just drive better, more comfortable and insulated. Cybertruck was probably the best car i’ve ever driven… literally a couch with self driving. I also have a rental property and am doing renovations… I had a whole washing machine in the back of my macan lol… so a truck bed would be nice from time to time. Issue with the cybertruck is well… it’s a cybertruck lol. the model y, while I do love… was just very low to the ground and less insulated, those were my main gripes, wasnt the insulated comfortable commuter the others were. i’m not really concerned with range unless it gets cut like 50%. my point is I don’t really want a sedan/hatchback which is essentially what the Y is in its current state and am wondering if I can mitigate some of that.

Do you mean real range or EPA range? Because the Model Y Performance’s highway range of 240 miles already drops under 200 miles in winter or after a few years of degradation. Lifting it will certainly make that happen sooner.

that’s rough, currently I commute only twice a week and will go to three times. my round trip is only about 15 miles. i’ll also have charging at home, I really don’t think i’ll notice it but will definitely do some research.

I’d just get the R2.

yeah… it’s looking like you won’t be able to get it until 2028 which is ridiculous. I have an order in on the 60k cybertruck and R2 would probably go with whoever reaches out first… if I find a compelling used R1T or MY overlanding setup then i’ll bite instead of waiting.

I guess I’m not understanding why the interest in lifting the y, if the main issue is comfort and insulation I do totally agree in the insulation though. Particularly for how much I paid for my model y (late 2022) it is nowhere near the luxury vehicles I could’ve purchased at that price point (significantly less expensive now)

I have a 23 model Y and gen 2 R1S... also have a 26 MY perf coming in next week to replace the 23 Two completely different cars. Interior and ride quality of the Rivian is better (air suspension is a huge deal). Technology, self driving and handling of the Model Y si better. Tech in the Rivian is just fine, screen is not as responsible and phone key is a 7/10 and universal hands free is meh. Tesla interior is also meh for Y and CT (not the case of S and X) I came from an Audi S4 into the Y and at the beginning was kind of shocking, now I like it, hence I am getting another one. The Rivian has a larger battery and hence home charging will take longer. The other day I plugged it in at 20% and took around 9 hours to charge back to 100% (mine is LFP) My Rivian has been super reliable but I had a couple minor things to address and service is subpar. Great people but their capacity is super limited and take A LOT. My service center is full of Amazon vans. Launch of R2 concerns me as will be more cars at same capacity. Tesla has 4 major service centers in a 30 min drive from my house. I love that I have both, and they have different uses in my case. I couldn't decide which one so got both 😃 I personally prefer the Y because the drive is more connected to the road. Wife and kids prefer the Rivian, it's more comfortable and they like the looks. I get a lot of compliments with the Rivian though, never for the Y..

I think it’s a combination of sitting low (near the ground) within the car, the lower ground clearance, poor insulation and the 21inch wheels with low profile tires. any bump you’re basically going through the bump yourself as opposed to sitting high and wafting over it. if I were to get a MYP, bare minimum would be to remove interior floor and door trim and lots of insulation… next would be thicker tires and then if it makes sense lift kit… all of those would put some separation from the ground and insulate you.

Got it. Yea I mean if you are willing to put in the time and or $$ for a coil over lift you could probably keep or maybe even improve ride quality and improve the height. Adding insulation sounds like a good move. If I could do it over I’d probably go with the Rivian. I pretty much never use the FSD (I’m a much more conscientious driver than FSD) but the autosteer is really quite good. Good luck with the decision. Sounds like you have all the information you need, just gotta figure out what works best for you

I want the R2 form favor, but Tesla tech (mainly FSD). The model Y is a hatchback sedan to me. I hate when it’s referred to as an SUV. I feel like I am leaning toward R2. A raised Model Y would look goofy to me, but I’d love to see it, lol! Also, the rear storage is a lot smaller than R2.

That CT will hold value way more than these R2's that don't even have the lidar Rivian expressed they needed. That is going to be an update at the end of the year. That $60k CT is the deal of the year, especially with no tax credit.

If you want a truck, buy a truck. Don’t get a car, especially a heavy one like an EV, and try to turn it into a truck.

My take, lifting the Model Y will throw off its driving dynamics a little to a lot, depending on how you do it. It’s a more car than truck at the end of the day and a very heavy one at that. I’d go with something else.

Sounds like you need a truck. I have a midsize and my Juniper since we do a lot of projects as well. I’d rock the hell out of a cyber truck

Cybertruck is your car if you will be driving on rocky/aggressive terrain - therefore ground clearance is critical. I wouldn’t try this with the Y - risk of scraping/damaging car and impacting the car battery. Nor would I lift the Y - don’t do it. Otherwise get the Y. I lived in the Pacific Northwest for a while and I needed great ground clearance - but no Cybertruck was out yet - so I had a Subaru Outback. Now I’ve moved to Florida and have a Y - traded in Outback for it. Don’t buy a Rivian IMO, they need 5 years to get to Teslas current level (ie: FSD)

You want Tesla software. You want a truck. You enjoyed driving the Cybertruck. Isn’t this the obvious choice? I’m having a hard time seeing why the other choices are still on the list for you, given what you have said. Maybe I’m missing something. Can you say why you would choose one of the others on the list over the Cybertruck?

two things: long term ownership, just the steel exoskeleton is a bit of an unknown… second thing is just the perception, I don’t really like attention and having such a polarizing vehicle would really take some getting use to. I truly hate how much I love it.

That makes sense. I guess that how you feel about how polarizing it looks is your deciding point on the CT. Tesla paint is a weak point on the cars. It can be damaged more easily than traditional car paint. The CT stainless is pretty solid. Tesla offers an extra undercarriage protective layer which is cheaper if you buy it up-front. It looks worthwhile if your needs are rougher off road use. Let us know what you ultimately decide. :)
